1. GLOBAL OILFIELD BIOCIDES& BIO-SOLVENTS MARKETOVERVIEW Biocides are the chemicals which are used to kill microorganisms. They act as anti-microbial agents in the oil-field industry. Killing of microbial through biocides depends upon dose of biocide in substance and the time when actually biocides get contacted with microorganisms. In oilfield industries biocides are used in dose system by periodically or continuously. Biocides only have its effect in substance when it is actually present in it but after removal, bacteria will start growing again in the substance. And in fact at the lower dose it acts as a source of nutrition for microorganism and helps it to growth in the substance faster. The biocides are mainly oxidizing and non-oxidizing types. They are sub classified into types such as glutaraldehyde, peracetic acid, chlorine, DBNPA, THPS, quaternary ammonium and others. These biocides are used in different oilfield applications like drilling, production, hydraulic fracturing, packer fluids, completion and others. Glutaraldehyde is the major biocide used in hydraulic fracturing across the globe. Bio-based solvents are those who originated through renewable resources of biological origin such as plants, fruits and so on. Bio based solvents are mainly in liquid form, these are the solvents which are having less amount of carbon in it. They have ability to dissolve, dilute or extract other substance without changing its composition. The main bio-solvents that are used in oilfield applications are grouped into hydrocarbons, ethers, esters, glycol, alcohols and others. Bio solvents are used to protect the environment from harmful compounds such as volatile organic compounds. Oilfield biocides and bio-solvents market is analyzed using various parameters as shown in the below figure.

2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The growth of microbial organisms in oilfield is a major concern for which industry spends huge amounts on the effects of microbial growth. Biocides are the chemical agents that kill the microorganisms and prevent and/or control the effects of microorganisms. These biocides are of two types, namely: oxidizing and non-oxidizing biocides. Bio solvents are those which can be used as corrosion inhibitors or wetting agents in oilfield applications such as drilling, production, completion and so on. Gluteraldehyde is an important non-oxidizing biocide which is widely used in the applications of oilfield; whereas, chlorine is the most used oxidizing biocide because of its low cost and corrosive nature against the microorganisms. As per IndustryARC analysis, the global oilfield biocides and bio solvents markets revenue are valued at $535.8m and $137.7m, respectively as of 2014, and are estimated to grow at a CAGR of 3.6% and 4.2% till 2020. Oilfield biocides and bio solvents have a wide range of applications in oilfield such as drilling, production, completion, hydraulic fracturing, and packer fluids and so on. The majorly used biocides are non-oxidizing biocides and bio- solvents are hydrocarbons and alcohols. North America is the leading producer and consumer of biocides and bio solvents and also has the highest market share in the global market. This is due to its high shale production where these chemicals are used mostly used in hydraulic fracturing application. In North America, U.S. is the major country in terms of high market volume and revenue for the oilfield biocides and bio solvents. The APAC and RoW are relatively small when compared to the North America in terms of oilfield biocides and bio-solvents market; however they are growing rapidly as well as with high CAGR. With respect to the global market, North America holds 55.6% of the entire oilfield biocide market. In Europe, the regulatory bodies like Environmental Protection Agency are promoting biosolvents for their eco-friendly nature and less harmlessness towards human life. These regulations are one of the driving factors for the bio solvents market. The oilfield bio-solvents market in Europe is projected to grow with a CAGR of 4.2% during the forecast 2015-2020 next after the North American region to reach $175.2m by 2020. In this report, the market has been segmented by geography as North America, Europe, APAC and RoW. Market sizes and forecasts are provided for each of these regions. A detailed qualitative analysis of the factors responsible for driving as well as restraining the growth of the biocides and bio solvents market, along with future opportunities are provided in the report.

4. MARKET FORCES DRIVING FACTORS GROWING DEMAND FOR OIL AND GAS PRODUCTS FROM END USERS Increased demand for the oil and gas end products such as solvents, electric blankets, fertilizers, plastic wood, and adhesives and so on is ultimately resulting in increasing demand for oil and gas extractions. In the oilfield industry, there are processes like upstream and downstream which involves stages like drilling, production, completion and so on wherein the oil or gas has to undergo several processes such as transfer, storage for longer periods and so on. Microbial growth is one of the major problems faced by the oilfield industry and it uses biocides to control the same. Microbial growth in wells, pipelines, drilling mud and so on results in huge expenses and loss to the oilfield industries. Solvents are used to protect against corrosion and for the cleaning of the mechanical parts used in the oilfield. Thus, the demand for oil and gas based products leads to demand for the usage of biocides and bio based solvents. GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS FOR ECO FRIENDLY BIO BASED PRODUCTS The traditional solvents used from years in oilfield and in other main applications of solvents are the synthetic products. Synthetic materials used to prepare biocides and solvents result in harming the health of the humans and the environment. Disinfectants, insect repellents, industrial chemicals like anti fouling paints for ships and materials and so on are called biocides and since these exhibit their intrinsic properties that are harmful to the living beings when exposed to them. Natural biocides can be derived from plants and bacteria and has less effect on environment with no or less VOC. Traditional solvents emit volatile organic compounds (VOC) which are harmful to human beings and also to the environment by releasing the toxics. Government is concentrating on alternative products like bio based solvents which have less or no VOC. These are derived from fruits, seeds and so on. Government bodies like European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), European Solvents Industry Group have regulations to promote less harmful biocides and bio based solvents so that they have less impact on the environment. The rules and regulations have been mandatory for the manufacturers of these products. Hence, this is a good indication for the growth of this market.

6.1.2. OXIDIZING BIOCIDES Oxidizing biocides are the chemical agents capable of destroying unwanted microorganisms used in wide range of applications processes like commercial cleaning, hygiene and industrial process. In industrial processes, it is used in stages like drilling, packer fluids. Oxidizing Biocides are used in rare cases, when microbial growth in oilfield is too high and non-oxidizing chemical agents are unable to control the growth. Oxidizing biocides are further categorized into chlorine, peracetic acid, chloroisocyanurates, hypochlorite, bromine, ozone and so on. Oxidizing biocides are the fast killing biocides when compared to the non-oxidizing biocides and are more reactive but less persistent. These are used less in global oilfields when compared with non-oxidizing biocides. This is because of their flammable and toxic nature which can lead to dangerous effects when they are not properly used in oilfields. Oxidizing biocides are extremely corrosive with microorganisms even with the minimum use levels of 1ppm or less. Companies like BASF, Dow and Dupont and others are the manufacturers of oxidizing biocides for oilfields. Besides the highly corrosive nature of the oxidizers, these are expected to have a wide usage in oilfield, especially in fracking application.
