LEISURE & INDUSTRY - CONTRAST

LEISURE & INDUSTRY - COEXISTENCE

The impression from our fieldtrip has led us to look at the relationship of human and the context in both leisure and industry settings. One can immediately identify the 2 settings by the huge scale difference between each other.

LEISURE & INDUSTRY - SIMILARITY

Leisure Activities Industry Activities Undefined Space with Random Activities

By juxtaposing scenes of leisure and industry, we see the contrast of different scale. Collages create an interesting contrast between industrial and leisure components and even suggest a similarity of the two in totally different scales.

The trans-scale potential development is justified by our analysis on space utilisation on site, that leisure and industry space coexist in the same infrastructure and occupy in different time.

LAYERING OF THE CITY Standing in the Fishing Harbour, from the hinterland to the periphery, the variety of industrial and leisure activities could be layered according to the distance, at the same time, intertwined. Zoom in to the site, it is also clear that how industrial activity is isolated from daily life. My project, in-between as the buffer zone, will function as a transitional collection of layers connecting two sides.

LAYERING From leisure to industrial zone, the layering strategy create different spatial experience in two zones. For leisure, exhibition, interactive classroom are connected by long slope; while for insutrial area, efficiency has priority.

From ‘Boundary’ to ‘Border’

With the appearance of new border - the Operational Plan of the Historic center in 2001, the fringe area of Border Interventions the historic center now has more opportunities than after the2001inner city to allow changes happen. Since this border is a conceptual one, so I use the methods of sampling and mapping, translating this line into a border with thickness and unfold it. So the relationship between ‘boundary’ and ‘border’ reflects on the width of line and the ‘vectors’ I extracted from the site. Management Toolbox-Transformation of Unnecessity

The site is located in the edge of the historic center. It’s almost the only western entry of the city center where different infrastructures and public program linear scatter around, and leads to the UNESCO cultural street in the core of the Genova. It’s a key location connecting inner and outer city whilst public hub is missing during several years.

Railway Degradation

The site is a transportation hub since ancient times. While during the industrial transformation process, many infrastructures were abandoned, among which the railway is the most significant one. The railway on site will be taken place by tunnel in the following years. Map in 1855 & 1916

Translating the barcode system into 3-Dimensional space, I applied different gestures to adpat to the site conditions. For the mountain side, the gesture is ‘insert’ or ‘superimposition’, in order to provide vertical circulation; while for the sea side, the barcode space represented as an ‘embedded’ entry or ‘connection’, mainly function as a horizontal circulation.

BARCODE IN LIGHTNING

Based on above mentioned lightning consideration, three pools in the project form changing relationship of the black & white served and servant space diagram. The served space is enlightened from the top or the side, creating blurred atmosphere among the steam and water.

Hot Pool

The model selected from the third section show the grading of servant space. As a servant part in the building, it accommodates a small pool (served) where light would come directly from the top. While compared to it, the staircase (servant) around is dark but the opening inbetween allow a sub-level lightning.

The site used to be an important industrial base at the border of Shenzhen Economic Special Zone. With the urban regenration, a lot of warehouse and infrastructure are abandoned, which I see great potenial in turning it into new urban agricultural base.

The whole project is a urban complex consists of the Steel Park, the Plant School, and the Natural Factory. It a shift from abandoned industrial heritage, into an environmental-friendly, high-tech programme complex, appealing urban villagers nearby come into the process of reconstructing the site.

ARCHITECTURAL TRANSLATION - IMAGE AS PROCESS

Bridge of Houses, Steven Holl, 1981

Bridge of houses is a existing superstructure based on an abandoned elevated rail link in the Chelsea area of New York City. It deals with three issues: · Hybrid Form: the combination of the housing and the structure of bridge; · Composite History of the site: the re-use of the foundations and abandoned structure; · Urban Pattern reinforcement: the dual identity of the street wall and new construction.

Based on its particular composition, I detached the superstructure and the bridge, flattening the profile of the building. The decoding process is like programming. Through more detailed subtraction, the spatial quality become more explicit from entity to fragmental form. ‘Treatise’ written by English composer Cornelius Cardew consists of 193 pages of graphic notation. He used thickly line drawing to express length, volume, chord, and repetition etc. Got inspiration from Cardew’s music notation system, the structure of bridge and the superstructure of houses could be regarded as the juxtaposition of the main theme and chords. Determined by tectonic discipline, the juxtaposition comprises six layers from the structure, superstructure to the movement according to the different characteristics of dwellers. The programming process of Bridge of Houses is ordered from unified entity to fragments. Studying from bridge typologies of Steven Holl’s research, the outcome of buildings’ profile is the result of subtracting geometric elements step by step. By enumerating all components, the hierarchy of operation become clear.

Parc de la Villette, Bernard Tschumi, 1984-1987

In 1974, Bernard Tschumi developed the theme of fireworks as an architectural manifesto. It basically formed upon displays of lines, surfaces, points and superimpositions of the geometrical elements. Parc de la Villette could be regarded as an three-dimensional expansion of the firework rendition. The superimposition of space, movements and events organised by grid order has its intrinsic freedom. Through the intervention of grid, all geometrical elements are under the control of the entity. Folie in Parc de la Villette indicates the point of intensity, the point of actions, and specific location where things ‘happen’. The transformation controlled by grid comprises repetition, distortion, superimposition, and fragmentation. Folie is subjected to permutations and combinations, and intersected by the different movement vectors, including diagonal ramps, bridges, covered walkways, vertical elevators etc. Those intersections not only provide ‘movements’ but also create ‘events’. Tschumi’s idea of body and space was mainly inspired by performance artists Nice Style, in which Bruce Maclean was the most influential one. The re-composition of Folie provide the foundation for movement notation. It is related to how people use the space, how be guided in certain direction and how those movement in different hierarchy intersect.

ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION THROUGH FIGURE OF SPEECH Étienne-Louis Boullée’s project for the Bibliothèque Royale (1778-1788) was elaborated in three very different versions. He represents a fundamental facade to understand the shift from the classical paradigm to a modern way to conceive a building. This is a investigation of architectural expression by redesigning Boullée’s library facade, through the figure of speech ‘Accumulation’. GRAVITATION Accumulation signifies the representation and underline of significant elements both physically and mentally. In terms of Boullée’s philosophy of space, the geometric clarity act as the foundation of pure memorial space. There is no exception in the case of library. By symmetrically extracting interior geometric elements - (semicircular) arch, (triangular) span roof, and the array of columns - and juxtaposing entrance stairs, centrality is highlighted in the facade. Concave semicylindrical space embraces the external environment whilst the real entrances on the side facade reveal the sense of distance and sublime.

This is because, initially, as the symbol of religious space, the library in nature has a strong spiritual attraction to the masses. It is free and fair to anybody. The metaphor of the ‘hidden entrance’ is that only if you realize the importance of self-awareness and the understanding of the world, you could find the way to access to the knowledge. The gravitation indicates not only the interior space, but also the selfawareness. Seen from the right projection, the enhancement of plan emphasizes the symmetrical geometric order from inside to the outside, rather than an integral envelope. The left section reveals continuity and threshold of the access to the interior of the library. Moreover, the texture and shadow are well concerned by bringing into materiality of the roughconcrete and highlighting semi-cylindrical entrance.

PHOTOGRAPHY I am fascinated by the sensitive, fragile relationship between human and space. It happens occasionally, while always burst into great power. It exists in unremarkable place and inadvertent moment, reflecting in ordinary people and the space we live everyday. So I use my camera to catch those fragile moments, to appreciate the beauty of conflicts created by these occasions. In this way, I hope to know better about the world and space around me, so as to design ideal space that would not only provide a better life, but also accommodate this conflict beauty.
