Supervisors: Peter Brew & Simone Koch Beijing is becoming more international with China’s development in global politics and economics. With internationalization comes the inevitable urban problem of replacing historic with commercial precincts. The loss of cultural history and breakdown of local communities is a significant problem that affects the city. The Longfusi District was renowned for its snack street and temple fair. It survived two fires but was demolished for development as a commercial zone in the 1990s. The district remains as a historic district without the historic buildings but contained the local communal memories. From the government’s brief, Longfu district will be redefined as an art and culture district. The project proposes a medium density art and cultural complex. It aims at reviving the Long Fu District, with its local culture, from being eroded by monotonous large commercial developments. The design is inspired by the life in Hutong and Siheyuan(courtyard house) and translates the traditional elements into a contemporary form, blending into the urban texture of Beijing. The conviction behind the project is the uncertainty, the uncertainty which can bring out unexpected properties. The project is not aiming at bringing another iconic block to Beijing but provides Beijing a public place with local spirit.

Ambiguous Library Inspired by the scanimation, column is used as the main design element. Columns formed a green space in a curved shape that represents the linkage between building and the context and also makes a contrast to the rigidness of the building form graphically. It functions as a continuous general reading area which connects with three stacks areas and provides main circulation. The columns also formed the landscape connecting surroundings and mapped a route for pedestrians. At night time, the function of library swifts into a lighting sculpture.

SITE PLAN

HubBa HarBa The main idea is to make the Harbour Esplanade the identity of Docklands. The identiy of our project called POROUS came about from trying to connect land and water. The main element of the site was the vast amount of water surrounding land. Utilizing this element made our project POROUS. The concept POROUSNESS however was idealy to allow the building to breath by itself, giving it the opportunity to allow other natural elements to entre and repel negetive elements. The concept was achived through the idea of a wave ‘like’ mimicry that strenghtens the project. Each layer of the form was designed seperately to allow the POROUSNESS through various parts of the layers but as a whole it hold the element of a large wave trying to connect to the harbour esplande indulging itself into land and trying very hard to merge itself.

Melrise Place

Affordable highrise housing in Melbourne CBD

Melrise Place Who Young couples on low incomes working, studying or seeking employment opportunities in the city Why Low income couples, especially couples with children, have a variety of special needs. This demographic is growing, there is a demand for this type of housing in Melbourne CBD. How Affordable housing provides people with choice and opportunity, and ensures that cities are inclusive and equitable.

Life Support The communal design is based on the programs of inputting retails, office, childcare centre and kindergarten. The programs enhance the project to keep a balance of a communal harmony in the CBD. The form of the building is portrayed by using modular programming and spatial experiences through out each module. The main idea is to connect these 3 different spaces and giving something back to the city life style, and creating a balance of public and private.
