Berlin’s New Castle

Tempelhof Feld is a “park instead of an airport.” Tempelhof Schloss is a castle instead of a school. This is a school without four-walled classrooms, year-to-year grades, standardized subjects, and static learning. Tempelhof Castle attempts to combine the site’s preexisting programs with a playground to generate a new primary school education infrastructure and architecture. The school attempts to gamify education by centering around the interdisciplinary and cyclical nature of project-based learning rather than the current antiquated, linear progression from grade to grade and subject 1 to subject 2 which allows for a more dynamic and fluid learning system. Similar to games, students are assigned quests, or projects, and an instructor to guide their problem solving both individually and cooperatively to produce a final piece of work in the form of a presentation. The student then earns experience points for making progress in subjects that they discover interest them through this process. Here the key is in providing resources for discovery rather than dictating what should be discovered. Similar to a castle, the school houses a library, computer lab, wood and metal shop, science lab, and administrative spaces that all support the open floor plate both structurally and intellectually. Students move through the open and free plan of the ground floor collecting information online and through books, creating and testing experiments, working with peers, attending workshops lead by instructors, and then finally presenting their work on the floor of the keep. Tempelhof Schloss envisions a new model of education through architecture.
