A GREEN NODE Ecosystem Workshop | 5th year
Pasaia is a town that was born and developed along with the port. It has four districts: San Juan Donibane, San Pedro, Antxo, and Trintxerpe. Since the harbor activity had been moved to the outskirts of the village, its main economic activity as a port had been significantly reduced. San Juan situates on the eastern side of the bay. The projected site is right at the entrance to the village. It was a small artificial harbor, but recently it is seem to close by inactivity and insecure entry. Even though there were a lot of unused resources, the complex meeting between the sea, city, and nature makes the place more charming. Thinking beyond it is an actual location. It is important to improve the relationship between humans and nature in a way that is mutually beneficial. The current infrastructures are necessary for the city’s supplies, however, shouldn’t be ignored the fact that they are obstacles to the natural habitat and that they are inferring it negatively. The project will take into consideration this issue to minimize the obstacles of new buildings, allowing more linking with nature.

The primary road to the village and its location made this plot insecure and difficult to access. The objective behind this project is to break this barrier to link it with the surroundings again and regenerate the area. The project will take height difference as solution. Firstly, a new link under the road bridge will allow having a natural promenade with being wild so far. Then it will be necessary to connect the abandoned fortress on the hill to the new harbor as well as the new lookout tower. This latest access will make possible a new circulation for citizens providing security and more activities. The difference in levels would also be a natural conduit to recollect water. The impermeability of asphalt will lead rainwater to an emerging plant system that will be planted in the new harbor. In these ways the harbor will be linked to nature.
MEDIATHEQUE_ PORTUGALETE Project Workshop | 5th year
The market building of Portugalete is an existing building. This building has a lot of history. It was first used as a laundromat and a meeting place for women. Later on, it was destroyed during the Civil War and was rebuilt once again with a more modern architecture style and was used as a marketplace. Recently, this building has been abandoned and is more like an annex building. The goal of this project is to preserve its original architectural features and to turn it into a new meeting place for its citizens once again. To maintain the history of this building, the facades have been preserved. The interior space has been redistributed to adapt to its new function - a multimedia library. The project will have a different atmosphere as well. To achieve this, the new roof will be updated and the sculptural painting of the entrance will be relocated as a memorial element. The lack of direction in the current building will be solved by adding a new abstract geometrical concept. It will give importance to the main entrance, allowing a huge hall for different activities. The transition between the interior and the exterior will be more continuous and more dramatic. A new linear staircase will be installed in a location that can be seen from all angles. This connection will make the interior flow more fluent and intuitive. The transparency of spaces allows people easier to navigate and to be more creative using open spaces. Finally, a light wooden roof, with a tongue-and-groove system, will dazzle the space with a unique and light atmosphere.

NODE DWELLING_CO-HOUSING SENIOR LIFE Master’s final project
Window -Waiting area of a Hospital The project is located on the outskirts of Barcelona, at the intersection of Gran Via Avenue and Rambla Marina. It currently has three distinct areas separated and surrounded by road traffic and infrastructure, creating a hostile place for residents. The project will take into account the proposals of the PDU 2030 to change the first image of Bellvitge and to connect these areas into a green corridor. The project will take place in the middle of a park. the space released by the PDU allows the creation of a linear park parallel to the Gran Via, the intersection between the new park and the local park will create a node of flow, a space that will play an important role in guiding the continuity of the Gran Via pedestrian crossing. The program for the use of this new space responds to the current need and desire to create new corners in the community. It will include housing for the third age group, as well as flexible housing developed for short-term stays for younger users based on the concept of shared housing. This will be a type of housing suitable for older people, who live communally and cooperatively. Co-housing will include private, personalized family spaces and a range of communal spaces. The service will be collectively managed and participatory. It will focus on the bio-psycho-social aspects of its users, with particular attention to the communal spaces created for socialization and communication between residents. Fundamentally, it will focus on aspects of co-living, quality of use, urban environment, and coexistence and organization.
NODES OF COMMUNITY Group: Chu Chen, Cynthia Meza, John Rios The health contingency resulting from the spread of covid-19 has highlighted the existence of high levels of social segregation, reflected in the overcrowding and lack of urban facilities and public services essential for academic and professional development in this new normality. The project proposes the decentralisation of the endowments and the creation of focal points in strategic locations to meet the basic needs arising from the pandemic.

Chiesa Diruta was a benchmark for Grottole’s inhabitants for many years, offering peace and refuge to prayers. This project looked for comm morating its significance. Therefore, the design kept the veneration usage with a contemplation space on the first floor, employing indirect lighting and renovating previous grooves to solemnize antiquity. Besides, to visualize the majestic Grottole’s view, it was implemented a viewpoint and terraces to take advantage of it. Furthermore, the proposal conceived the past and present as a process in the monument, consequently, gave continuity to previous structures. But also, differed temporarily establishing distinct materials. That was the case in the rear façade and the glass cupule. Additionally, the citizens’ and visitor’s appropriation was extremely relevant, even without available shows. As a result, the backstage and the frontal terrace could be used by visitors when there is not a concert. Even so, the frontal terrace is a scenario extension to give unexpected shows connected through retractable doors. Tiers will adopt different usages by retractable conditions as well. Hence, this project will allow connecting people to the environment and Grottole’s history through its interventions.
Group: Yuta Awaya, Chu Chen Thinking about the actual pandemic situation. We are attaching more and more importance to the relationship between our environment and well-being. Inspired by a peaceful, fulfilling lifestyle. We believe in the need to be in close contact with nature. This lifestyle is highlighted in contrast to nowadays quick pace life. We are seeking sustainable architecture, which allowed us to create a warm and harmonious natural setting. We expect this building will encourage its users to experience the time changes. It is a micro-house, but abundant. We are based on the principles of green building and carbon neutrality. We proposed the use of the aquaponic system for passive heating. The technique consists of two main parts, with the aquaculture part for raising fish and the hydroponics part for growing plants. So, our design is focused on a green roof with hydroponics, it is accessible from its lowest point, and the house will be surrounded by a water tank with aquaculture. Where we take advantage of its thermal properties to insulate and cool. What is more, thanks to the natural evaporation of water, it allows us to create a stable microclimate for the building. We expect this incorporation to be part of the landscape for the occupants that will invite them to experience the passage of time and convey the feeling of peace like a Zen garden. Despite the small footprint area, we would like the house to be abundant with great space quality. Our core’ strategy is synergy. We enhance the design by getting all construction, structure and the volume of the building to work together, and collaborate to form one. It will benefit the use and maximize the usable space. We gain spaces from height differences and the structure of the house to create large storage spaces. Both the floor and the wall can be customized for the needs of each one. The volume of the building is like a shelter that conveys the feeling of protection. The roof is inspired by Asian architecture. We use the large eaves for sunlight, with a careful calculation of the slope and the position of the building allowing us to balance the interior comfort. It is a house where people can be comfortable and sheltered.
