WORLD / FREE / ENDLESS

Situation The site is in Lincoln Park in San Francisco. The Park was a large golf course for twenty-three years and was the western terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States of America. The site is on the northwest edge of the city and has a good view of the Golden Gate Bridge. There is a parking area that people can use who come to the park. Intention As the backyard of the surrounding residential area, Lincoln Park is a good location to build a public library which could service local people. The primary purpose of this design is to preserve the views of visitors who come to Lincoln Park. Therefore, I put all the programs underground to keep the ground area clear and keep the excellent views of the landscape and water. Since the program is a library, I wanted to link the metaphor of reading a book to experiencing the architecture. When you read a book, you enter a new world of the story. Similarly, when you enter the library, you enter a different world from outside.

In 1868, the area now known as Lincoln Park, was reserved by the City of San Francisco for a city cemetery, also known as Potter’s Field Golden Gate Cemetery. In 1909, Lincoln Park in San Francisco was designed in honor of Abraham Lincoln. In 1914, part of Lincoln Park was developed as a golf course and 50 acres (200,000m2) of the original track was turned over to the federal government. In 1923, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor was built in Lincoln Park. The San Francisco Holocaust Memorial, designed by George Segal, was dedicated in the park in 1984.

WATER / LEISURE / NATURE

Situation Mono Lake is located in Yosemite National Park with its excellent views and beautiful surroundings. I chose to locate the site on the northwest side of Mono Lake, between two rivers. It is near Mono City, which makes it easy to supply the needs of the spa. Mono Lake is one of the few remaining inland lakes in the Great Basin, a vast geographical region with no outlet to the ocean. Mono Lake, the Great Salt Lake, and Lake Abert are the last few large hypersaline lakes in the Great Basin that host productive ecosystems and a large number of migrating birds. Intention I want to protect Mono Lake in the design of this project. Mono City is near my site and will be able to deal with any waste created by the spa. The two rivers join together at the site which means that the water quality is less salty here than at other places around the lake. This is important because excessive salt is not good for the human body and buildings. This project is floating on Mono Lake, which could let users touch the water and enjoy views of the sunrise and the sunset. Half of my project will float over the lake so that visitors can have a great view of the lake.

PAST / PRESENT / FUTURE

Situation The site is near the West Oakland BART station. The former building burned down, and only the concrete structure is left. This concrete frame has been there a long time, and lots of graffiti has been sprayed there. There are a lot of parking spaces near the site.

Intention This project keeps the old structure and builds a new structure on top of it in order to show a strong contrast in material and spatial quality. My concept is based on the existing site with its burned-down building. When I visited this site, I was shocked and touched by the old building with its burn marks, rough edges (we could see steel rebar exposed in the concrete) and street art (graffiti). I could feel the destruction, and I wanted to create a new project to give this site second life. In addition, I want to let visitors and users feel the cycle of past and future, destruction, and rebirth at the same time.

LIGHT / PARK / TRANSPARENCY

JINMENG CHEN, M ARCH / SELECTED WORK, 2014 — 2018

Situation The site for this project is Byant and 4th in San Francisco. The whole street looks so busy and full of buildings. Some of surrounding buildings are residential, some are industrial, and others are retail. The average height of the surrounding buildings is around 30 feet. There is a lack of public space serving nearby users. Bringing a public pool tthe area will provide public space to attract more people and will make the neighborhood safer through this use.

Intention Considering the existing city texture, and that of the surrounding buildings, I chose to use rectangular shapes in the design, but I decided to break the rhythm of the buildings by creating a stopping point in the area with a large open space. So my main idea is “light and empty” space to contrast with surrounding buildings. Because the material of the surrounding structures is concrete, brick, and steel. I chose glass and plastic to be my main materials, and steel and concrete to be the secondary materials. I organized the open space by using a regular grid patten.

STUDIO / MOVEBLE/ ATTITUDE

JINMENG CHEN, M ARCH / SELECTED WORK, 2014 — 2018

Situation The site is located in a residential area, which is good for a small design studio. It is a average lot size and typical building design in San Francisco.

Intention The building program is combined design studio and living space. The design studio is located on the first floor, and the living space is on the second and third floors. The concept of this project is “space changing”, which includes changing the facade and changing the interior lighting. This building has two different structurial systems. On the first floor, it uses a steel structure because I wanted to create a more open space for the office area by using less columns. On the second and third floors, I use a wood structure because it is the residential area and wood is a cheap and strong material to use. To sustainably provide for natural light while reducing heat gain, I use vertical sun shading on the building façade. This sun shading is not control by any program or control point. It is controled by the people who live in there. The residents can adjust the sun shading by hand to find the most comfortable interior light condition.

SYMBOL / LANGUAGE/ VISIBLE

JINMENG CHEN, M ARCH / SELECTED WORK, 2014 — 2018

Situation Understanding the inevitable connection found between communication, writing and cultural identity became the fundamental criteria for researching, organizing and laying out our proposal. From the time of cave paintings and petrographic carvings to the word processing systems of today, it is clear that writing has had an evolutionary contribution on the definition, identity and growth of all cultural groups and societies associated with specific languages. Sounds and symbols are two basic categories which contributed to the evolution of languages.

Intention Ultimately, we believe that understanding the various existing social and/or cultural variations through the lens of writing will enhance the comprehension and connectivity of humanity in our planet - this is the goal of our proposal and the objective of our building design.
