Pulaski Terminus offers downtown Athens a contemporary urban retail space. Inspired by the terraced villa gardens of Tuscany, the design takes advantage of its axial relationship to Pulaski Street and captures the long vista northward. TheTerminus features approximately 5,500 square feet of retail space. The facades run parallel to an elegant promenade that is punctuated by private seating areas, a chain of cascading fountains and contemplative water pools. A central outdoor plaza lies between the two retail blocks and features a dramatic outdoor fireplace.The promenade takes advantage of the site’s twelve foot elevation change. The linear form directs visitors through the space while arcing walls frame the fountain cascades and seating rooms. The contemporary architecture features extensive glass, connecting the interior to the exterior. A sculptural roofline reflects the barrel rooflines of adjacent buildings and the arcing retaining walls that define the promenade. The roofline’s wavelike form provides visual interest when viewing the buildings from the promenade as well as when approaching the site from Pulaski Street.

The overall spatial limit is defined by a planting of shade trees that provide views in and out and simulate an arcaded walkway. The plaza takes its primary form from native american indian mounds found throughout georgia. These captivating land forms of georgia’s ancient past are translated in the design as 4 foot high turf berms; the central berm embraces an interior plaza with seating, while two additional berms serve as focal points. A newly designed sculpture dedicated to Herty represents a beyond human scale-a la claes oldenburg-unfurling roll of newsprint, seemingly coming to rest upon the southwest berm. The sculpture honors Herty’s important contribution to the pulp and paper industry in the south. Reminiscent of Charles Bridgeman’s grass amphitheatre at Claremont (circa 1722), a terraced cafe/amphitheatre commands the southeast corner of the site with a grove of flowering trees serving as backdrop. Two proposed buildings mirror the form of the space and continue the transparency of the law library. Inspired by Burle Marx’s use of paving patterns, banded paving is a prominent design element. Wide bands of red colored stone are further defined by contrasting bands of bluestone. The pattern draws people into and through the space. A central “river” of bluestone meanders across the plaza, passing through the central plaza, and terminates at the amphitheatre.

“living bench” concept
Nestled between two buildings, this urban park is configured in two primary spaces: the lower level serves retail and restaurant patrons while the upper terrace offers a tranquil tree-filled environment for urbanites to relax. An expansive flight of stairs across the space provides a transition between the two levels while also serving as seating. Elements throughout the site reflect the radial form and are designed to draw people inward toward its center where the Circle Cascade energizes the space. Contrasting paving materials are used to achieve the dynamic spiral pattern on the ground plane. The radial form and the spiral pattern are further captured in other elements including the arc of the water wall on the upper terrace, which feeds the Circle Cascade, and two “living benches”through which grow five Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia)-their appealing lace patterned bark and foliage provide interest throughout the year.

The architectural style of the original center and new building reflects that of Frank Lloyd Wright. Taking visual cues from Wright, the landscape design is based on his stained glass patterns, many of which are seen in the center. The interplay of geometric forms and use of primary colors was translated on the ground through the use of a variety of paving patterns and stone banding, landscape strips, plaza areas, and water, providing interest, direction and emphasis throughout the site.

east lake park
Located in the heart of Atlanta, East Lake Park serves a diverse community in a rapidly transitioning neighborhood. Increasing and changing use patterns prompted the community to participate in a visioning process led by Park Pride, a local non-profit dedicated to preserving Atlanta’s parks. A concept plan identifies major capital improvements including improved circulation, a multi-use sports field, dog park, enhanced playground, and community garden. This conceptual master plan was developed under the supervision of Park Pride’s Director of Visioning.

Inspired by Handel’s opera, Parc Alcina serves as both a public green space as well as an outdoor performance venue. Two central water courses symbolize the journey of the opera’s two main characters and unify the four primary spaces of the park. The experience begins at the north entrance where a tapestry of evergreen and deciduous woodland plants in a n aturalistic landscape setting invite visitors to follow the water through the park. Sculpture serves as focal points throughoutandasunkenoutdoor amphitheater is carved from a solid mass bisecting the park. Concluding to the south, the terminal space is highlighted by a dramatic water wall where the water courses re-unite and cascade into a raised pond below.

plan of re-envisioned historic railyard district
roundhouse folly re-created as “remnants” where the historic roundhouse once stood--proposed new community housing in the background
Ripe for revitalization, Washington Georgia sought the guidance of The University of Georgia’s School of Environmental Design for conceptual re-development plans. As one element of my plan , the historic rail district was re-envisioned to include vital community amenities such as a park, community center, housing, retail and live-work space. Goals for the district included: •
Linking two areas of town that were previously divided by an abandoned and blighted railroad yard in an historically significant area;
•
Provide greenspace within a rapidly developing area. Unique park elements were proposed to honor the past and educate the area’s diverse community about its railroad heritage;
•
Adaptive re-use of historic depot hotel as a community center and a warehouse facility as live-work space to anchor various activities and stimulate economic revitalization.

Located in historic Ansley Park, this new residence is sited on .18 acres. Working within strict municipal impervious surface constraints, the landscape plan achieves a balance between hardscape areas for entertaining and service and plantings. Special consideration was given to the back of the residence, where an intimate courtyard space was created, providing a gracious transition between the garage and the home’s outdoor terrace and a pleasing view from the above garage pied-à -terre. As an investment property, the builder also requested alternative courtyard concepts to include a small pool.
