Pengyan is passionate about how humans interact with their environments. Inspired by art, travel and histosty, she sees architecture as a universal language that can orchestrate an interactive environment and change the way people connect to each other, their surroundings, and themselves. She believes that being an avid listener and thinking creatively and holistically are key. Her design approach includes a willingness to consider and work through a plethora of options to get the ideal result. She enjoys testing out diverse potential outcomes and options to inform her final selection. She also enjoys creating playful and colourful designs. She believes architecture should help and nourish the broader community and its surroundings. A curiosity around the vernacular of architecture, the history and the language of building design, sparked Pengyan’s career in the field. She is intrigued by architecture’s ability to represent how people live within a particular time and place. Pengyan enjoys seeing the transformation from drawing to building, even if it is just a representative model. Pengyan joined architectural practical feild in 2019. With strengths in producing complete construction packages, her role includes completing working drawings (in both schematic design, tender and construction stage) and indicative 3D renders that give clients a clear understanding of the designs. She has also worked on mixed-use, complex residential, educational, commercial,aged care facility and recladding projects. Pengyan enjoys the challenge of problem-solving while embracing a range of aesthetic implications. She is particularly interested in finding the striking contrast of large and small scales present in architectural possibilities. She also enjoys exploring the balance how the architecture and the city would interact and negotiate with each other. Pengyan believes good design is practical, adaptable and future-proof. She views a project not as an end, but as a step towards a more adaptable solution, and one that responds to an ever-changing world.

ZHONGJUN WORLD CITY_9th GALAXY Jiuliting, SongJiang District, Shanghai, China, 201615

One of my key responsibilities is to produce concept design presentation slides and develop them. I helped the team produce 3D models and visualization renders, involved in its day-to-day design. I also participated in the facade design of three towers. The opportunity to be involved in the commercial project is exciting and the design experience is also fantastic.

ZHONGJUN WORLD CITY 9th GALXY_BENOY

The project concept comes from the flow of gravity and orbiting by creating a singularity point on the top, footfalls circulate it, creating multiple layers of tracks. Sketching from the universe, the site turns to a mixed-use facility with a commercial centre and related towers (containing a head office and two residential towers). It also brings a futuristic lifestyle to the local people.

CO-LIVING CONCEPTS_HINGE ARCHITECTS

The project intends to redesign the facade and internals based on the original building. The lower levels of the building will continue to be used as retails, while the upper floors are considered to be residential. We have researched prototypes of contemporary living spaces, and make them as modules to rebuild the model. This project is only in the conceptual stage.

EAGLE POINT Eagle Bay Road, Eagle Point, VIC, 3878 We won the project of building a whole new community center for residents in Eagle Point from the East Gippsland Shire Council. We propose a multifunctional center for people to share and enjoy the view of the place, with retail, cafe, and kitchen.

A CLUSTER OF ACCOMMODATION_HINGE ARCHITECTS

This project starts with the schematic design stage for 4 dwellings and an administration building for the Wodonga-based Centre Against Violence (CAV) through the project management of the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH, now Homes Victoria). CAV acts as an agent and provides crisis accommodation, support, and recovery services to victim-survivors and children experiencing family violence.

The RMIT Building 8 Level 7 was a refurbishment project. We worked with RMIT to encounter an outstanding feasibility study of the open offices, meeting rooms, small study nooks, and kitchens. It was designed to support RMIT staff with a new layout and working vibe. We introduce multiple open offices with diverse themes to serve the requested group of staff. The idea is to make the whole level operable, and provides a more flexible floor layout for staff. In this project, I am involved in the discussion of each stage, producing 3D visualisations and preparing in all stages of documentations.

have the opportunity to get close to the culture and experience. That’s why people are willing to travel to ancient town to get a glimpse of the local living experience. China is a nation of great antiquity. It is no doubt that there are a lot ancient town and particular vernacular architecture. Nevertheless, the majority of the town have been knocked down due to the rapid expansion of morden cities last 20 years. Many expert and scholar are starting to take actions of resisting the demolishment now. People are starting to realize the importance of old and paying more attention to it. There has been a dramatic shift of the attitude towards it. But it is not enough.

Imagine: you stand to see the scenery on the bridge, seeing the person of the scenery see you in the upstairs. The bright moon decorated your window, and you decorated the other people’s dream. People seeing people is the most beautiful scenario. But, how does this can actually happen? You have to keep the aborigines there. They live there, they live traditionally. And you 13

Architecture is the carrier of culture, while ancient architecture is the core of cultural heritage. Ancient architecture is a carrier of cultural spirit and the historical record of a nation’s life. It is the habitat of the soul of human culture, temples of human cultural beliefs, and halls engraved with historical monuments and cultural souls. It reflects the cultural patterns of different regions, countries, nationalities and communities. It is also a symbol of cultural diversity. The architecture has very important historical and cultural value. Recording history and displaying culture, Carrying the soul, providing identity and enhancing self-confidence, these are all ancient buildings that can give us. Without ancient buildings, our cultural roots can not be found. Ancient buildings are temples and palaces of human cultural beliefs. Only in front of these temples, We just know who we really are.

THE ‘18 STAIRS’ A STRIP OF CIVIC INFRASTRUCTURE I often find myself wondering what the attraction of a city is and what the future of cities is. I guess it is the uniqueness and conventional characteristics of the city. And future cities are supposed to preserve these delicate factors. THE ‘18 STAIRS’_ A STRIP OF CIVIC INFRASTRUCTURE

Future cities are supposed to preserve their uniqueness and conventional characteristics. Most cities are now undergoing the homogenization of globalization. The contemporary city has been out of control and lost its potential identities. The context of a city can no longer provide inhabitants with the conventional language to the space of the street or premises. Places that were once unique and iconic are suffering from being erased in their entirety. Pursuing the gentrification and industrialization in quality and efficiency in life, cities have become similar in extrinsic features and experience. A child born in Shanghai is probably experiencing a remarkably similar lifestyle like another born in New York. The younger generation will no longer have opportunities to reconnect to the way their parents used to live, even the elder would get lost in their ways of finding the past. It is crucial to explore the approach of preventing cities from being identical. My approach to the preservation of cities’ identity starts with investigating a specific city, Chongqing, which locates in the southwest of China. The ’18 Stairs’ is an experimental project that sought to retrofit the urban field condition through an investigation of the fine grid system in the large civic infrastructure. This investigation consists of a range of typological study and the testing of the scale shift from small to large, focusing on how a traditional typology could be mutated into a new architectural language. The objects are generated by a collection of vernacular stilted houses in Chongqing. Elements are unpacked and repacked to assemble a new object. The flatness of the field creates a public urban corridor for the city, constructing a new masterplan with injected shared sports fields. The rafters of single detached stilted houses, the floor joists, the studs, pipes, details and the house itself with all of the structural and ornamental elements will be unpacked and repacked as formwork to retrofit the new ’18 stairs’. It also intends to explore the balance between urban context and human activity. The aggregation of the stilted houses provides a special hierarchy within the urban context. The tiny scale stilted houses are repeatable on the site, creating an inverse of the megastructure in the city. This argues the layout of small scale density between large scale context. The massive grid of new stilted houses is essentially an integral large structure, which creates a strip of civic infrastructure that serving the surroundings. Ultimately, it is an expansion of a fine grid in between the high-rises. The inhabitants would celebrate the life here, meet with each other, talking and laughing.

As the high resolution could be presented effortlessly in digital tools, how to transfer it into real world becomes an enquiry. We start to 3D print a quarter of one-floor section, in the beginning we found that the chunk expresses too complex structure/ patterns. As it supposed to print a small scale, some zone of the chunk suffered a really thin volume which could not be printed. Even the 3D printer would have some limitations to printing. Printable turned out to be a big issue. The digital and the reality complement each other, while 3D print could be the binding approach between them.

Cross Realities could be considered as a process of pattern recognition and creation through merging design technologies. Unlike general architecture systems by the only use of only CAD techniques, this studio attempts to take MAYA as a core computational design tool with using mirror cutting and Arnold rendering. New technologies give us a brand-new recognition of design, with the using of AR/VR, people could be get access to the digital world easily. The new computational tools also help us to define a subject in a variant way, which means we could use MAYA for instance to obtain this high resolution tower or other fabrications. In this studio, how we generate the patterns /components/iteration objects and how they are impacted or represented need to be considered. We are not making art, but creating a new way of representing architecture. Even when working with the massive new digital tools, we can still find ourselves would get lost in the dimension of creating patterns or fabrication protocols. The role of design is a way to inspire the world, and to demonstrate in today’s design creator cannot ignore and in fact, should embrace the changing techniques to deliver previously unseen aesthetics and theory.

I found that Robin can always bring us a surprise, not only for the material he was using but also for the structure and layout of each house. When you first look at his project, you probably would think it is an ordinary house. But as you walked into the house and experienced it, you will realize it is such a gift. I was shocked when I stepped into his house, it is so beautiful, the structure, the material, the scale, and the layout. He was a talent. He could always find a balance between his idea and the client’s needs. For instance, his negotiation between client makes the Featherston house special. The bold innovation and attempt of it were advanced, challenging the traditional architecture. Even nowadays, the house could still be counted for a masterpiece and a leading notion.
