01 CARES IN CITIES The Changxindian Ancient Town Revitalization Plan and Nursing Home Design
Academic Work Individual Work Spring Semester 2017 Instructor: Guo Yue Locat ion: Fengtai District, Beijing, China Program: Ancient Town Renovation, Nursing Home
This project aims to revitalize Changxindian Town, an ancient town with almost a thousand years of history and crucial to Beijing’s transport and business development. Major renovations were conducted on one nodal architecture in the whole block. 1
Site Location The Town is located in Fengtai District, Beijing, China. Its long history has left the Town with various historical sites in different periods, giving it vital importance in cultural and historical research. 1. Business Culture: The Town has a well-developed business as it has served as an important transportation hub in and out of Beijing ever since Ming and Qing Dynasties and the Republican period. 2. Religious Culture: Due to its role as a transportation hub, the Town has attracted merchants and tourists from different walks of life and with various religious beliefs. 3. Folk Culture: The Town’s well-developed business attracts quite a few rich and influential figures to dwell here. 4. Red Culture: As the cradle of Chinese labour movement, the Town has quite a few relevant historical remains.

Energy-concentrating Pedal
Walking or dancing on the padel
When a footprint presses the board from 5 mm deep to 10 mm deep, electrical energy is generated. The triangular shape maximizes power output and data acquisition, and its high durability and ease of installation allow it to be mounted seamlessly to any location. In addition to generating electricity, the Pavegen unit can also connect to smartphone applications using Bluetooth, and the system can communicate with the building management system. The amount of electricity generated by the concentrating panels can be supplied to the various electrical appliances used by the old squatters, and the overall cost of the squatting station is reduced.

The whole building complex consists of four single buildings. The building on the east was built on a demolished one. All the four buildings adopt a renewable energy system which supplies electricity to itself and the other buildings. The roofs can filter and collect rainwater. The abandoned houses become characteristic homestays after renovation, adding to the Town’s charm.
The pavement is slightly broadened and illegal architectures are eliminated to make pedestrians safer.
An interesting awning is set on roads which adds to the beauty and provides shade for pedestrians.
The grey zone will be renovated and more transparent obstructions like glasses will be available to improve residential experiences.
The newly established squares in open space add to the Town’s charm and vigour.

Academic Work Individual Work August 2019 Instructor: Liu Qian Yu Locat ion: Rhode Island, United States Program: Building Renovation, Exhibition Hall
This project is located in the wastewater treatment station at Rhode Island, the US, aiming to renovate its architecture to better meet challenges from rising sea level and frequent storm. Control over the ground will not be abandoned as sea level rises, so we can transform the old architectures’ functions. The newly built architectures can better reduce damages by storms. The transformed architecture is mainly used as a weather exhibition hall. 6

The Station on the Island is suffering badly from the storms, during which architectures along the coastline may be inundated.

Public Bicycle Station Design Suqian is a green city. In terms of transportation, residents are also advised to go green. Therefore, a public bicycle station is designed to meet various needs, using solar panels and rainwater collection and purification system. The solar energy provides electricity to the power bank and the electric scooter. The station can filter and purify the rainwater, and people can take their own water bottles to receive water here, which reduces the probability of residents buying bottled water and prevents the waste plastic bottles from polluting the environment. People can take water bottles here to collect water, whether hot or cold water can be provided.
Mobile phone scan QR code can get bicycle, scooter and power bank.

BICYCLE STATION RENOVATION In modern Suqian, people advocate diversified and more green transportation modes, and public transport bicycles are convenient and cheap, but the problem is that there is frequent rain in Suqian and there is no canopy in the station. In addition, considering the interest and diversity of public transport, it is considered that adding scooter stations can attract some young people for green travel.

Bagdad’s cultural heritages will be inherited using new architectural materials and technologies. People’s awareness of the importance of Bagdad’s history and heritages will be enhanced. This design creates a brand-new promising prospect for Iraq and fully respects the cultural relics in the fusion of old and new cultures. 10
Site Background This site is located in the capital city of Iraq, Bagdad, which suffers badly from wars all year round. Although local architectures are all more or less damaged by wars, mosques, libraries and bazars are protected because of the influence of culture and religion. It is located in the former site of Bagdad’s municipal building to the north of the Tigris River. It has not been fully used and well maintained yet.

Building Walls and Functions The main function of the old Baghdad government building now is the assembly function, so there will be a variety of people here. There are often art exhibitions held here, and there are also some public welfare projects or voting activities held here. Therefore, even if the interior of the building is bombed, the building is still not abandoned by the local people, but has changed its function and continues to accompany people. The bombed buildings become open and people like to gather in such places to carry out activities.

This architecture keeps the original function of people gathering and provides library and shared office space. Hence, the old function is kept and new functions are introduced. Innovation accompanies inheritance.
Rooftop windows help illuminate the hall.
There is a corridor between the library and the shared office space, where exhibits on the first floor can be seen.
The hall on the first floor is the centre. To the north of the building is the library, to the west is shared office, and to the east is artists’ shared studio. A cafeteria is placed below the stairs in the north.
