Four ways to engage in historical areas

Selected Works 2017-2020

In the past thirty years, the rapid process of development of China has brought numerous problems to its own environment, including the destruction of historical buildings in both urban and rural areas, unvaried and toneless buildings, terrible public, etc. After the period of nationwide destruction and construction, a large proportion of old buildings are vacant and dilapidated. Reserved important historical buildings need to be renovated; old commuinty space needs renewal; new functions should be created to improve people's daily life and destructed urban textures are supposed to be mended. The selected works discuss four ways how a building engages in historical areas.

Space Design Such a historical area which is planed for tourism, the design of the youth hostel is supposed to prevent having too much destruction to the urban texture around. Thus, I use the size which is similar to the surrounding traditional buildings on each unit and try to apply the traditional space experiences in the alleys to the hostel.

The picture in the left is the main scene in the whole series of alley experiences. On the ground, the parallel walls perpendicular to the river serve to guide people to wall through the site and come to the waterfront. Surfaces between the walls are all transparent so that people in the street can see the activities near the bank. Paths on the ground floor are deliberately arranged to be zigzag similar to the alleys in the surroundings, in which people can experience some special spaces inspired by traditional residential alleys. The units above are arranged according to the prototypes of the alleys to create diverse interior spaces. Besides, the interior spaces are also organized to interact with outdoor spaces. Teenagers in different nodes of the interior alley-like spaces can also have interactions with each other.

2INTEGRATION OF THE OLD AND NEW Student Union and Sports Center&Restoration

Current Situation of Campus Spaces for Students Located in the campus of Southeast University, the project is to propose a new way of activity for teachers and students by renovating and expanding the old gym. The campus of Southeast University has some functional deficiencies. Space for daily routines such as self-study, discussion, reading, fitness, sports, recreation and meals are scattered inside the campus, even loaded by some single-function buildings outside the campus. The renewal of more integrated independent teaching method and the need for a higher level of lifestyle make the old campus out of date. Teachers and students shuttle back and forth in the campus every day and it costs a lot. Dotted functional space fails to form a compound living and learning environment, which can’t make students live an energetic and dynamic college life in the new era. Activity Spaces on campus

"Restoration and extension of the gym"

Noting that the old-style learning space has the following features: scattered, independent and unconnected, and a single building with a single function, inefficient and time-consuming for students and faculty to travel from place to place, as well as lacking a campus atmosphere.

.

Background Information Located in the old campus of Southeast University, the project is to revitalize the campus. As an old campus standing from the Republic of China period to today, it has many problems under its elegance. The lack of modern learning space for teachers and students and the old fitness facilities make it difficult for them to enjoy a high-quality learning and living environment. The monotonous and scattered learning and activity space are difficult to form a dynamic atmosphere that a modern campus owns. In order to improve this current situation, the project aims to expand the old gymnasium on the west side of the campus, trying to design it into a comprehensive facility integrating learning and sports functions, revitalizing the lifeless campus.

the new-style learning space should have the following characteristics: entralized and complex facilities, with well-organized functions inside, which can meet various needs of teachers and students concurrently presenting extensive atmosphere and high efficiency. .

Interier of the gym--the core space The core space stretches from the fitness part to the old wall and then into the activity area of teachers and students, which respectively undertakes the most active functions of the space--ball playground and cafe. The bottom-up space enables the leisure crowds above to enjoy the ball games along the terrain. Meanwhile, the old wall has become the background wall of the playground below, and people can enjoy the scenery of the old wall while they are exercising. Around the atrium are many types of small space, and people doing exercise in the activity room can enjoy activities in the core large space above. When a largescale event is held, the badminton court can be used as an activity venue surrounded by the crowds, which forms an active and lively atmosphere. 9 .

Housing for the elderly and the youth&community renewal

"To provide comfortable conditions for the elderly and offer low-rent housing for the young"

MIX

Relationships between the Elderly and the Young in Daily Routine It is found from the chart that as for relatively private behaviors, taking sleep as an example, the elderly sleep earlier than the young people, but cost more time to get up, which is quite different from the daily routine of the young people. Over mixed living mode may cause trouble to the elderly. For the daily meals, the time would overlap, and they can form a positive interaction of mutual assistance. For the most public social and exercise behaviors, due to the reason that young people go to work during the day, the elderly are the main users of public space, and the time after dinner is for social interaction and activities for both of them. From the chart, we can find that daily private behaviors are supposed to be separated to avoid mutual interference, and common social and activity space should be created for the two groups to form a positive interaction. 5:00

"Aging Process in Beiwei Rd. Community"

"Young Workers Moving into the District"

In the past 40 years, the rate of the aging population in the community has been increasing, and the growth rate has accelerated year by year. By 2020, the elderly population accounts for 24% of the whole community population. With the growth, the problem of less elderlyfriendly status in the community has become quite salient, the living of whom jumps to the priority in community governance.

With the introduction of high-tech industries in the urban area where the community is located, the floating population of migrant youths has been increasing in recent years, whereas the local high rent makes them flinch, and their housing problem can’t be ignored.

In this project, the young and elderly groups are arranged in various layers to better organize the living space, so that both sides can live in an environment without interference. Sharing activity space is placed between the two layers to boost daily cooperation and social interaction. The ground floor is designed as a community centre, making up the missing functions of the old community.

The community center on the ground floor is surrounded by two U-shaped volumes. There is a main entrance in the north and south sections respectively. The entrance foyer serves as the lobby of the residential part. An opening is formed between the two volumes, connecting the inner yard and the urban space, making the inner yard a part of the urban public activity space and traffic corridor while forming a belonging atmosphere and optimizing the experience of the ground urban space. The upper living space overlaps the elderly layer and the youth layer inserting the activity space with the functions of a public kitchen and sharing a living room between every two layers. And it sets single rooms without a kitchen near the sharing space, to facilitate the best use of this space by various people of different ages. Also, greening and leisure tables and chairs are placed on the platform for residents to enjoy sunlight and the outdoors.

.

1. Place the volume.

2. The volume is cut to form the inner yard.

3. The upper and lower layers form a residential part and a community activity center on the ground floor.

Entrance Lobby

Located at the corner of the main road, the generation of the volume should consider the impact of its shape on the urban public space. The concession of the building height at the southwest and northeast corners can reduce its pressure on the street corners and internal spaces of the residential blocks, thus the platform formed can provide more sunlight and activity space for the elderly and young people. At the same time, the enclosed inner yard also can offer a peaceful outdoor recreation place for residents in the complex.

Facade Design To distinguish the layer of the elderly, the layer of the young as well as their shared space, three different color themes are applied to each of them. As for the layersof elderly, the facade backs inside to create balconies and shadows. A slope ceiling is used in each balcony to address the facade indentation. While warm colors on the wood surface help the elderly to feel relaxed. In regard to the young's layer, the facade clings to the outline of the complex to have a contrary to the layer of elderly, while the color of the layers keep consistant to the cover of the whole upper living space. The shared spaces are the most acitve parts, therefore a bright color is used to address these spaces on the facade.

Site Information&Spatial organization strategy

Cultural and Arts Center with a Concert Hall

Located in Gunan Street of Yixing City, which is backed by Shushan Mountain, the site is presented in an arc shape. The North Street, as the main street of tourist attractions, is full of purple clay workshops. In history, purple clay pots were made here and shipped to various places by water alongside the west river from the square on the south side of the North Street. The South Street is in chaotic after several demolitions and constructions last century, messed with self built houses, old houses, workshops and warehouses. The site is located at the end of the south street, facing the extension of the ancient street on the north side. The north and east sides of the site are close to the interior of the street, and the south side is connected with the main urban road. For the residents who have lived in Gunan Street, the cradle of Chinese purple clay culture for generations, their inner cultural identity and group cohesion are extensive. Therefore, when structuring the culture and art center, I want to structure the space with a core space symbolizing such features as the center surrounded by other activity spaces. The concert hall could undertake the role of a spiritual space.

The ancient street gradually developed from the north to the south, and the purple clay industry was flourishing.

The South Street was demolished and built on a large scale. The newly built peasant houses , factories and warehouses made a hybrid street.

The preservation work of the ancient street was launched to repair the North Street building complex and streetscape, while preserving the historical atmosphere along the ancient street.

For the central core volume, the location of the site faces the extension of the ancient north street. From a high point of view, the winding extension of the ancient street and the landscape on both sides form a stunning view. If the concert hall, as the spiritual core, is opened to the ancient street, with the ancient streetscape as the background of the auditorium, it will surely forth a shocking spiritual experience.

As the site is adjacent to the ancient street, in order to maintain the continuity of the ancient street, the surrounding activity spaces are in a small volume to cater to the pattern of the ancient street. At the same time, an inner courtyard enclosed by the core main body and the surrounding small volumes is formed in the site.
