CONVERSATION Each project is unique to me because of various relations among different things and people. Architecture is not just a space for human to live, but a platform for conversations, connecting every object, element, and creature. The picture above is a scene of the bank of Ganges River in India, which is the sacred river for Hindus. People here believe in the God of the river so everythings in their lives are bound with it. There are a lot of altars and steps along the river as the picture showing, which are conversations take place. Steps are down to the deep of water that reflect the changing water line. The function of them is not too much different to a park in a city to let people and nature communicate with each others, but conversations of them represent in different ways according to characteristics of everything in the sites.

The picture on the cover was photograghed in Varanasi when I traveled to india. The Ghats in Varanasi are world-renowned embankments made in steps of stone slabs along the river bank of the Ganges where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions. The ghats are an integral complement to the Hindu concept of divinity represented in physical, metaphysical, and supernatural elements.Varanasi has at least 84 ghats, most of which are used for bathing by pilgrims and spiritually significant Hindu puja ceremony, while a few are used exclusively as Hindu cremation sites. As the most important part of their lives, conversations between human and river, steps and boats, architecture and space, bound residents all together. The man in the middle is a Hindus who was wandering in the river without any purpose, just feeling the water flow, the sand, and the air. To put it in my word, he had a really pure and deep conversation with the Ganges, which foreigners like me would be confused about his movement in the beginning without understanding their culture and religious. Conversation is the relationship between everything, and architecture is a platform that people build to create new conversations or to communicate in different ways. Architecture design is such an important work not just to make life more comfortable but to create new connections between several objects that may have nothing to do with each other before. LEARNING FOREST It's a open college serving for adults who want to learn some special techniques or knowledges for promotion. The site is located between Panyu road and Panyu greenland which used to have nothing to do with each others before. Introducing various types of in-between spaces, inspired by the multifarious status of sidewalk spaces on Panyu road, makes it become a sharing platform that provide people chances to involve in the activities on the path to greenland.

Panyu road is not a big one in this area, but with several educational institutions, like Shanghai Jiaotong university Xuhui campus, high schools, elementary schools, and even kindergartens. It's an energetic street with a lot of restaurants and shops, serving the students and residents around.

The site is located at Xuhui district which is the sub-city center of shanghai. There are a lot of recidence area here with typical shanghai street view of parasol trees and little parks around communities. It is not too far to go to the airport and the downtown that is very convenient for the residents. ROADS & BUILDINGS

East-west road

The main purpose of this design is to open another gate from Panyu road to Panyu greenland. By now, there is only an entrance from south which makes it closed without contact to the neighbors. The new gate in the east is not just an entrance, but also an extended part of the park and the street, introducing various activities into it.

South-north road

M o s t o f c o m m e r c i a l a n d o ff i c e b u i l d i n g s are square in plan that have no direction obviously. The street view don't change as they locate at roads in different directions.

Residence buildings are always rectangle in China due to the traditional concept of Fengshui with east- west direction to insure enough natural lighting, which is also ruled by government regulations. Directions of buildings and roads sometimes conflict with each others especially as the roads are in south-north. There are more contact surfaces, leading to various in-between spaces. 5

SIDEWALK SPACE ANALISIS

CONCEPT THINKING

As the analisis of relationship between roads & buildings showing, Panyu road is a typical south-north street that has more contact surfaces. Due to different funtions of buildings, the street view is conposed of various in-between spaces with variety of activities. To attract students and residents to the new gate for the park, I want to introduce these in-between spaces and activities into site. They play an important role to generate new interactions and communications.

Kiosk is a common space for activities in the park, where people play chess, take a rest, chat with neighbors, and etc. The site in this project is a "bridge" connecting street and park, so I take it as the most important thing to bring elements from both to translate them into a new space composition. Simplifying kiosk as the space elements, a rooftop and four columns, is the way to analyze what triggers activities. As changing the scale and elements of it, there are more possibilities for various activities. Reorganizing these different units with a bigger space for indoor events and several smaller spaces for the outdoor aside generates new in-between spaces for communications.

6

AMBIGUOUS BOUNDARY

This is the computer labs with information board aside. When people stop to get some informations, they share the same space.

The structure extented from classrooms, the main learning spaces in this project, with trees and benchs is a space for rest and interaction.

There are bleachers with dislocation boundary constructing viewing interaction between inside and outside at different elevation.

Hall is a bigger space sharing the same space with people ouside without disturbance to each others because of making use of high and low levels. 7

19 species of trees are classified into three kinds of scale to analize the relationship between trees and human. ENFRAMED SCENERY SERIES

In city, the natural elements of parks are usually designed for people’s activities. The plaza, grass, and even waters all satisfy people's need with the various effects of spaces, such as introverted, guiding, and isolated ones. Yet, our activities will be restrained by the area of trees in the natural area, leading to little possibility for different events, but more chances to contact with trees. These are the magnificent differences between the two spaces. In this concept, TRANSPOSITION, architecture is no longer the spaces for people’s activities but for tree growing, and human is the guest visiting these them. 22

The site is located at a south-north valley with two other branch aside. Due to the relative elevation of terrain and the shape of the valley, water and wind flow down to north, forming the special charateristic.

The featured parts of each tree are sorted out to organize a series of enframed sceneries of trees. It's a continuous route for visitors to interact with various kind of trees with clear focuses. Staying in the dark part of space to see the bright outdoor spaces and trees makes it like a series of drawings.

ATTITUDE TO THE SITE

CORRIDOR ANALISIS Transformation of corridor

Viewing relation

To generate new possibilities of vertical interaction with different elements on the site, I transform the elliptic corridor into a dislocated one with ramp.

The same shape of corridor with d i ff e r e n t e n c l o s i n g e l e m e n t c a n generate various identities of spaces to get people's eyes on different point.

Combination of corridor and exhibition

Combination of corridor and activities

The corridor and indoor exhibition space are combined by enlarging a part of it which also become the main platform for activities with focal scenery.

Most of the corridors surround trees with unidirectional contact, while some are combined with branches to provide a platform for deep conversations.

Instead of hiding in the forest or making use of the shape of tree to get harmony with the site, I think the museum here should be horizontal extended to emphisize the vetical trees. ELLIPTIC CELL THINKING

To a c h i e v e t h e b a l a n c e o f m a x i m u n o f c o n t a c t s u r f a c e s o f p e o p l e a n d t r e e s a n d accessibility of visiting route, I select the elliptic corridor to organize the series of spaces. GAP SPACES BETWEEN CELLS

Leaving gap between the cells by studying cell bionics is for different elements to pass by. Gap between two cell walls is filled with colloid, composed of plasmodesma, which is the key for trees to grow high. It is such a necessary element for a natural system, even for the flowing status of original site. The right part above is the design process of the tree museum, which is considered as a integrated one with several coutyards in it at the first. To build friendlier relations with environment, it becomes separated gradually with gap spaces for natural elements.

Public spaces are no longer big plazas, but a series of platforms with various levels like stairs which not just make it possible for people to arrive different levels easily but create one maximized space for all people to share. 32

This section shows the main idea of public spaces. The alleys in SHIKUMEN was the main spaces for activities, showing the life style of people before. To reappear the energetic status, most of the old buildings are preserved and reformed for exhibitions, art studios, and cultural and creative stores to introduce young people and families. Besides, the platforms of the new building at different levels provide them a new way to enjoy various views of history.
