Long & lean Fall is all lined up behind long lines. Pencil skirts, many reaching midi and maxi lengths unseen since the 1970s, are practically de rigueur. Trousers feature slim silhouettes, often with slightly cropped ankles. Jackets are fitted close to the body, and several styles boast bottoms that fall far past one’s own. Aiding this straight and narrow appearance are visually lengthening accessories, such as brightly coloured tights, pointy-toed stilettos, and knee boots below; pronounced shoulders and collars above; plus lanky, well-tailored coats over top the lot. Remember to keep your fabrics and patterns on the lightweight solid side, thus promoting a clean, vertical profile.

It’s that time of the year again. Time to brush off your fall seasonal

Demure dressing High necklines and low skirts are just a portion of the picture. Throw in a few ruffles

and fringes, big bows and poufed sleeves, and you’re well on your way to a kind of Victorian chic that is oddly erotic in the way it promises as much as it conceals. A large factor in this really retro trend is that most great-grandmotherly of fabrics—

lace. Coy in its overall appearance yet still capable of giving multiple sexy glimpses of skin, lace allows you have your tea cake and eat it too. A clingy lace blouse is a must-have this season, great for gussying up everything from a decorous skirt to a pair of jeans. The need-it-now dress is one in neck-to-knee (or lower) lace, shaded anyway you like it, from dark black or raisin, to neutral mushroom or ivory, to bright chrome red or copper orange.

Strict structure There is a school of thought out there that women’s cocktail dresses now need to be built along strictly geometric lines, with stiff, controlled swaths of fabric swooping around the body like the concrete facing on the latest Frank Gehry structure.

This minimalist, even intellectual, approach to glamour can be eyecatching, but it can also appear quite severe—so if you do choose to go this route, think about softening the overall impact by wearing your hair loosely styled and selecting pretty pink shades for your evening makeup.

Blue hues Blue is the new black, especially in denim, and more. Then there’s turquoise, teal, peacock, and electric blue to contend with, which lend punch to such small accessories as shoes and handbags. Purples are also popular. Look for lilacs, violets, and all sorts of wine colours in clothes ranging from going-totown dresses to stay-at-home sweatsuits. But pay strictest attention to plum, which is definitely the shade du jour, seen everywhere and on everything, as well as being the kickiest colour to brighten this season’s tights.

Hot hues Naturally, autumnal oranges and golds, mustard to chestnut browns, rust and leaf reds are with us, perfectly right for fall casual clothing and outerwear. What still seems to be a big colour secret, though, is buff yellow. So if you want to stay ahead of the game, consider getting a coat in this great neutral shade. It layers beautifully with both plain solids and strongly coloured and patterned garments.

Hides to seek When the mercury dips, nothing keeps you warmer than natural fur. Fur trimmed vests and coat collars are a part of this outerwear equation, the former fitting in nicely with the season’s penchant for layered looks and the latter helping to frame the face, thereby elongating the body. If you want to go out with a big finish, try topping off your outerwear with a trendy plaid scarf, and don’t forget to take along a new long-handled leather purse. A tall pair of suede boots, with or without a strip of shearling trim at the calf, will score you bonus fashion points.

lots of luxe fashion report:

Luxurious coats, menswear influences, neutral tones, colorful accents, and modernized femininity both strong and sexy. Sometimes girls just want to be comfortable. This fall, comfortable clothes make a comeback. Look for beefy knits with a charming lack of pretension to be worn with opaque dark brown or black tights. The layered look is strong, punctuated with the broad belts that are one of the accessories that will define this year. Especially hot is a cardigan sweater with a tailored pant. Fluffy popcorn knits and enveloping cable knits separate this inviting casuFashion today transcends just one look. A multitude of trends reflect influences and flavors from around the world. Today’s consumer is well traveled and fashion savvy. The latest fashion images are literally at her fingertips, and she is no longer satisfied with the cookie- cutter looks of the past. She now has the freedom to express her own individuality. Today we are taking better care of ourselves through nutrition, exercise, and, yes, maybe a little medical procedure every now and then. This new youthful attitude can also be reflected in the way we present ourselves at work and at play this season!

have massive ribbed collars or cuffs. Pair chunky knit sweaters with delicate dresses or fine-gauge sweater-knit skirt suits instead of the standard woven fabrics like denim or twill. Draped and oversized knits in neutrals like ivory, gray, and black are the new go-with-everything over-garment. Casual themes include such staples as cashmere vee-neck sweaters in bold colours and dark premium denim. Dresses are going glam and glitzy, with jewel and feather details in shimmering shades of orange, red, and shiny neutrals. Influenced by the ’40s, bodyconscious dresses with puffy short sleeves and pencil skirts hitting at the knee with high waists are in vogue. This curvy silhouette is all Hollywood!

Casual Chic is this season’s biggest change. Sportswear styled suits mixing tweeds, plaid, satin and floral prints create a new relaxed feeling. Jackets run the gamut from fitted styles to cropped swing shapes to 3/4 coats topping the fuller easier trouser. The Vest borrowed from menswear is popping-up in all forms from the classic cut to the sweater knit to the sporty outerwear look. The hi-waist wide leg trouser or sometimes referred to as the new slouch look is here to stay this fall and looks great on all body types. Often this look is paired with the crop jacket or vest because of the hi-waist…very slimming and very chic. Simple, clean shapes such as the pencil skirt and sheath dress provide the perfect balance to many of the jacket shapes that are available. Menswear tweeds, checks and pinstripes are a continued

Elements of Style

T

With an essence of refinement and detail

The best looks that prevail this season are, most definitely,

for grown-ups only (sorry, Brittney) no children allowed. I’m talking strong, sexy, and confidently chic, but tempered… tempered with restraint. There has been shifting away from the baby doll and mid-drift baring looks that were so prevalent, for what seemed like an eternity. For the last couple of seasons, designers have been reflecting the more serious mood of the day. The focus is in a new form of polished dressing and attention to detail. Style that is understated and timeless flows thru the fashion world moving us into the past, when dressingup every day was a way of life. It’s a return to the basic elements of style.

influence in women’s sportswear. The magic lies in the mixing of these masculine fabrics with feminine touches such as the tie neck blouse in satin, floral prints and lace. Throw in a few special touches such as a pair of long leather or suede gloves, a cashmere wrap or silk scarf, an exotic skin belt and hand bag and you have it! Modern Dressing emerges this season in a play on new shapes. Organic pleating and folds define necklines and shoulders. Tops and jackets are funnel necked, boat necked and sometimes collarless. Sleeves are caped, dolman, belled or not at all. Coats almost take on a sculptured look with defined clean shapes that emphasize the waist. Pants are cropped and slim, long and straight or wide and flowing but always clean in silhouette. The tulip skirt shows off a tiny waist while hiding those areas we want to hide and looks polished and refined with a fitted short jacket. Look for more bold graphic prints and long lean silhouettes, zip front and snap closures. Details such as patent leather or small patterned leather trims give these new clean shapes subtle panache. Power dressing never looked so good!

The Dress is a must have and it’s so easy! Go figure… something borrowed from the past that would be so perfect for the very busy lifestyles we lead today. Look for a multitude of styles from the simple, clean and very modern sheath to the classic shirt dress to the ballet neck, cap sleeve, full skirted retro style…very lady like with pearls. The resurgence of the wrap or faux wrap dress is welcomed because of its flattering fit. Available in so many fabrics from silk jersey, crepe, wool jersey to ponte knit it’s an excellent addition to your traveling wardrobe! Statement coats 3/4 and 7/8 length in textural fabrics such as tweed, herringbone, mix media, suede, leather and shearling are layered over chic sportswear separates for a dramatic and glamorous entrance. A lot of emphasis is on the collar — over sized shawl collars, fur trim and hoods. Fur in beautiful

rich neutral shades as well as colour, are being shown in almost all collections. The fur stole, cape and wrap are the perfect finish for all the beautiful tweed suits. Look for Chunky knits in almost every collection. These cardigans, coats and vest are often woven with dimensional yarns such as mohair and angora which gives these over sized sweaters a loftier feel. Also look for comfy, cozy knits in cashmere, cottons and silk blends. Boucle and boiled wool make a long awaited return and offers an interesting textural mix against a smooth satin blouse or a crisp cotton shirt. Black and grey continue to lead the way but colour makes a welcome return this fall. Deep shades of purple, red and green show up in rich muted tones of plum, garnet and hunter green. Warm neutrals are also a natural choice this fall in shades of camel, bark brown and rust. A sleeper colour that seems to get stronger each season is navy. The new navy as I like to call it is much darker than the traditional navy — almost black — combining black and navy makes a very chic fashion statement. Also look for jewel tones such as cobalt blue, emerald green and teal. It’s in the details! Look for special effects in fabrics and finishes such as quilted leather, cracked paten and ombre dyed, leather and fur trim, muted metallics used for sporty outerwear and large jewels or subtle sequins sewn on dresses, blouses and skirts but not blingy jewels. These jewels are tonal and specifically placed for the effect. It’s a cinch! Belts are ever present in both schools of sportswear this season from skinny to corset like. Every thing from sweaters to outerwear is belted for a polished finish. With the return to good taste and basic elements of style this fall fashion season promises to deliver!
