THE RATTLERS BEAT THE PACKERS WITH DANIEL HOWELL’S GRAND SLAM, 8-5 Scott Phillion went 3-for-5 with three runs Santa Maria, CA (July 13, 2010) – The Rattlers scored early and late in the game, they were the first and last to score in the game. Daniel Howell came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of first inning and hit a grand slam over the left field wall. It is Daniel Howell’s third home run and first grand slam of the season. His last home run was a month ago on June 13 in Nevada against Team Vegas. The SLO Rattlers won 8-5 over the Santa Maria Valley Packers. All nine Rattlers batters had at least one hit. Six of the batters had two or more hits.

Kirk Fridrich (Kansas Wesleyan University) got his fifth start of the season for the Rattlers. He went four innings, gave up six hits, three runs, two earned runs, two walks, and three strike outs. Jimmy Allen (Rancho Buena Vista HS/Cal Ploy SLO) singled up the middle to start off the game. Bobby Buckner (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) reached on a fielder’s choice. Scott Phillion (Central Michigan University) singled and Joe Etcheverry (Northern Illinois University) walked. Then Daniel Howell (Santa Barbara City College) hit a grand slam to left field. The Rattlers took an early 4-0 lead. Daniel Howell went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, one run, and one walk in the game. Jimmy Allen singled to left field in the top of the second inning with two out, but he was caught stealing. Bobby Buckner singled up the middle to start off the third inning. Scott Phillion singled to left field. Daniel Howell singled to left field with one out to load the bases. Robert Vickers (College of the Canyons) had a sacrifice fly to left field to score Bobby Buckner. Thomas White (Santa Barbara City College) had a double down the right field line scoring Scott Phillion. The Rattlers had a 6-0 lead.


The Santa Maria Valley Packers scored two runs off of three hits in the bottom of the third inning. One of the Packers’ runners tried to move from first to third on a single, but left fielder Matt Anderson (Cuesta College) got the ball to third baseman Jimmy Allen for the second out. The Rattlers led 6-2. Booby Buckner singled with two out in the fourth inning. The Packers scored one run off of two hits and an error in the fourth. The score was 6-3 Rattlers. Robert Vickers singled down the left field line with two out in the fifth inning. He went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Michael Neilebeck (Cuesta College) came in the fifth inning and pitched three innings. He gave up three hits and struck out three. He is 1-2 on the season. Matt Anderson doubled to right center with one out in the sixth inning. Bobby Buckner reached first on an error with two out. The Rattlers were not able to score. Matt Anderson went 2-for-5 in his hometown. Zach Steele (Cuesta College) singled to left center with two out in the eighth inning. Matt Anderson singled to right field, putting runners at first and third. The Rattlers batters could not score a batter in the inning. The Packers scored two runs off of three hits in the eighth inning. They were only down by one run making the score 6-5 Rattlers. Jeff Johnson (Cal Poly SLO) pitched the eighth inning. He gave up three hits, two earned runs, and struck out two. Scott Phillion singled to right field with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Then Joe Etcehverry singled. Joe Etchverry and Scott Phillion had a double steal putting runners at second and third. This the second time this year the Rattlers had a double steal. Daniel Howell was intentionally walked to load the bases. This is the second time this summer a Rattlers batter was internationally walked. Robert Vickers had a two run single scoring Scott Phillion and Joe Etcehverry. Tommy White walked to load the bases. The Rattlers were not able to score another run in the inning. Marc Damon (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) pitched the bottom of the ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.
