I’m

a graphic and typographic designer. My full name is Ephram Edward Benguiat; I was born on 27 October 1927 in New York. I have grown up in Brooklyn and before World War 2 I had a promising career as a jazz percussionist but after realizing I might be performing at

people’s bar mitzvahs until I’m an old man. This seemed very skeptical so I decided to enroll at the Workshop School of Advertising, training as an n illustrator. In 1953 I became director of Esquire magazine, where I created the logotype of the magazine’s cover page. I opened a design studio and joined Photo-Lettering Inc. by 1962; later in 1970 I became vice-presWident of ITC, which today owns several of the typefaces I designed, including Edwardian Script.
CBS, A&E and countless others. Modern No. 20 as well as Bookman, is two out of the more than 600 typefaces designed by me. My work won me a gold medal from the New York Type Directors Club as well as the prestigious Fredric W. Goudy Award. This is enough about me so let’s move onwards…
I have been a member at the School of Visual Arts in New York since 1961. The typeface and logotypes I designed whilst here include Planet of the Apes, The New York Times, the Star Ledger, New York magazine, Mc Calls, Sports Illustrated, Esteé Lauder, the Barcelona Olympics,

tion came from:
swirly font consisting out of varying stroke widths and complementary glyphs is a sans serif, which is quite easily legible with the combination of a handwriting look and formality feel of a script. It illustrates this formality without eliminating functionality. I, Ed Benguiat, created the font in 1994. I wanted ti use the essence of the Edwardian time period from 1901-1919. With this font I created an elegant touch of a lady’s flowing handwriting combined with a bit of gentleman masculinity.
The typeface embodies the characteristics of steel-nib calligraphic lettering, where it was derived from. The typeface was designed by hand and each stylish letter of Edwardian Script “drawn and redrawn until connective elements of the letters were perfected to create the look of true handwriting”. The typeface can be classified as transitional, between humanists and modern. This allows the elegant and classy font to be used for various typographic layouts. This font is owned by International Typeface Corporation (ITC) and is included on many word-processing software.

Script is valued for its flowy elegance and it is often used for business letterheads, wedding invitations, formal event invitations as well as other formal designs.
This typeface is not only displayed on paper designs. Since its release the font was being used for various etching and shapes for jewelry. It is commonly seen on a necklace with someone’s name cut out of metal in Edwardian Script as a decoration of the necklace. Even though this font only exists for twenty years it has already made its debut into the tattoo industry just a couple of years into its existence. The typeface is used in the lettering of various typographic tattoos. The typeface is sometimes altered to the preferences of the client but its true elegant form is clearly visible. These tattoos are usually a name, poem or verse.
