Always ask for a consultation before the weaving starts and establish with the stylist exactly what she is going to do. Very long faces should consider medium length hair and bobs, long hair will elongate the face.

If you are in doubt about the finished length of the weave, ask your stylist to start slowly by cutting a little off the length on one side first before committing yourself to the whole thing.

What do these names mean? What are the differences between them? Given this much choice how does one decide which colour or colour combination to choose in order to achieve the desired effect. Weave Tip When you cornrow weave all of your natural hair away you do not have to worry about blending or matching hair to your own natural colour. You can choose a completely new colour or combination of colours. 6

Colour Combinations A Base tone is always predominantly first within a colour combination. This ensures that the hair blend is realistic. An example of this, T1B/350, Hair that has the top 50% Off Black (1B) & the bottom 50% Med Dark Copper Red (350).

Dark

Hair that is one light shade throughout.

Hair that is one dark shade throughout.

Piano

Full

Hair that is two contrasting colours that have been equally alternated in one inch sections like the key board of a piano.

Hair that is two contrasting colours that have been equally alternated in two to three inch sections.

Tip

Hair that has the bottom 50% of its length in a contrasting colour to the middle and root sections.

Hair that is “mixed” equally at the root with a bottom section that is dark throughout.

Mixed

Hair that is mixed equally throughout 50/50.

Hair that is dark at the root, a middle section that is “mixed” and is tipped in a contrasting colour to the root section.

Hair that is dark at the root, a middle section that is “piano” and is tipped in a contrasting colour to the root section.

Hair that is dark at the root, with a bottom section that is a piano mix.

Weave Tip Never sleep with a wet weave. Damp roots will cause the hair to smell, it also the biggest single cause of matting. 7

Colour Combinations

Examples of colour tones & combinations Piano Colours Piano refers to the effect achieved when the hair is mixed in alternating streaks of contrasting colour similar to that of a piano keyboard. The overall effect is a line of colour followed by a line of solid base colour. Hair mixed in this way gives a streaky or highlighted effect. The order code for piano is P, this is then followed by the dominant base colour code and lastly the contrasting colour code. For example P1B/530 is Piano. Base colour number 1B followed by the subtle contrasting colour number 530.

Tip Colours Tip refers to the effect achieved when the bottom 1/2 of hair i.e. the tips appear in a contrasting colour to that of the roots and middle sections of the hair. The order code for tips is T this is then followed by the root colour code and the tip colour code. For example T2/30 is Tips. Root colour number 2 followed by tips colour number 30.

Examples of colour tones and combinations

Mixed Colours Mixed refers to the effect achieved when individual strands of hair in a contrasting colour are added to a main base colour. Instead of adding the hair in streaks or rows the hair colours are blended together. This gives a more even distribution of hair colour throughout. A multitude of colours can be mixed in this way. The order code for mixed is M this is then followed by the base colour code and lastly the mix colour code. For example M2/30 is Mixed. Base colour number 2 followed by the subtle contrasting colour number 30.

Weave Tip There are no rules about colour when it comes to weaves experimentation is the key to success. 8

ClosureTM Weave

Original ClosureTM has a fine poly base that is designed to look like skin. This base has been specifically designed in colour to resemble and blend with the wide variety of Afro skin tones. Each and every strand of hair is then hand woven onto this skin like base in order to mimic a true parting. This follows the natural hair growth patterns.

L Shaped ClosureTM is made using the same material as original closure, but it has been designed in an L shape which allows the wearer to achieve a double parting. One along the hairline and one on the side.

What is ClosureTM? ClosureTM is a small hair piece with a parting on it. This hair piece is added into your regular weave to give the impression of a realistic looking parting in the weave. How is ClosureTM attached ClosureTM is usually sewn onto a cornrow base in the traditional weaving method. Although it can also be attached using other methods such as the netting method most commonly used to cover bald patches (see over). Breathable ClosureTM is made with a new semi permeable membrane that easily absorbs water and allows air to pass freely through it,thus enabling the hair and scalp to breath naturally. The perimeter of the breathable ClosureTM is strengthened to allow for extra stability durability and comfort.

Terminology Guide Choosing the right weave may at first seem like an easy undertaking. After all how difficult can it be to look in any magazine choose a hair style and leave the rest up to your weave stylist.

Micro Strand extensions (Heat adhesive Sealing) Refers to the technique that requires glue adhesive or wax based sealing also referred to as bonding. Heat adhesive seals use a hot gun or soldering instrument to fuse single strand clusters of long extension hair with pre glued roots onto the roots of your own hair. When the glue melts it fuses your hair to the extension hair. The effects The effects can be good if your own hair is of a similar texture to the one that you are putting in. For example if you are putting in long silky European hair and your own hair is natural afro hair that does not match in texture the extensions will not look natural or realistic. For best results natural Afro hair must be relaxed before application. Suitability These extensions are suitable for people whose hair colour and texture matches with the hair colour and texture of extensions that they are applying. Not suitable for people with fine hair or problem hair like bald patches. Aftercare Special shampoos are often recommended for aftercare These extensions require regular visits to the hairdresser for maintenance as the hair grows. Hair type to use is bulk

Weft Bonding (Cold adhesive sealing) Cold adhesive sealing is normally referred to as bonding. This is when wefts of hair (long strips of hair like a grass skirt) are applied to the roots of the hair using a glue solution from a bottle. The glue is applied to the wefts and then added to the root of the hair in sections. This can be left to dry naturally or the heat from a hair dryer can be used to speed up the drying process. The effects Just like the hot sealing adhesive technique you must remember that it is essential that the hair used matches in colour and texture to your own. Failure to do this will mean that the extensions will not look natural or realistic. For best results natural Afro hair must be relaxed before application. The effects can be a good flat smooth finish.

Weave Terminology Guide

Suitability This is suitable for people who have relaxed hair that are looking for a very short-term hair style extension for a special occasion. Aftercare Special shampoos are often recommended for aftercare This technique is a short-term style solution that only lasts a few weeks at best. Not good in hot climates as glue has a tendency to become unstable in warm weather. Care must be taken to remove all the glue residue from the hair once the extensions are removed. Weave Tip When wearing straight weave hair be it Afro or European straight always blow-dry the hair first thing in the morning. This will bring the life back into the hair and get rid of that unsightly kink left in the hair from sleeping with it in a ponytail. 12

Things are not always as simple as they may at first appear. There are many factors to take into consideration when deciding on which weave to have. Mistakes can be distressing and very costly.

The Stocking Cap Weave (New) This new style of weave was innovated in the USA. A stocking cap or doo rag is put over the clientâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own hair. this then acts as the foundation for the weave. Wefts of hair are then bonded onto the doo rag and the weave is cut into style . Once the hair has been cut and styled the client can then take it off at night in a similar way to a wig. The clients own hair can be wrapped or cornrowed or can even be bald. The effects The effects can be great for special occasion styles This is excellent for ladies who want to have hair to match their dress or combine a collection of colours to suit the occasion. This is also most suitable for those very heavily freeze gelled hair styles. The advantage is that you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to freeze gel your own hair and deal with all of the maintenance that that entails. Suitability This style is most suitable for women who have little or no hair. Hair that is just too short to weave in the conventional manner. Alternatively it is also well suited to women who prefer not to braid their hair Aftercare No maintenance. Wear it until it wears out! Hair type to use is Weft

Micro Weave (Cornrow based weaves) Micro weaves are the oldest and most popular type of weave. The hair is cornrow braided into rows, the pattern of the cornrows depends on the chosen style. Wefts of hair are then sewn onto the cornrow base. Cornrow braids are a natural and comfortable way to rest and grow Afro hair whilst the weave is in place. The Effects The effects can be excellent as they allow for maximum versatility. You can put all of your natural hair away or leave your hairline out.

Aftercare Maintenance is easy because you not have to use any special shampoos or conditioners and the cornrow braids will stay in for a long time with no damage to the natural hair underneath. Keep the hair looking silky and easy to manage by regularly putting oil serum in the hair. Hair type to use is Weft

Weave Tip Wash condition and blow-dry the weave every two weeks this will remove any residue left from hair spray gels and serum and leave the weave looking good as new. 13
