Both anthropological and linguistic, Hal Fischer’s Gay Semiotics is a photo-essay that details the signaling devices used by gay men on the streets of the Castro and Haight Ashbury neighborhoods of San Francisco. With this work, Fischer hoped to contribute to the growing consciousness of the gay rights movement, recently symbolized by the 1977 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade.
