Point lace floral motif

By Sandhya Vempati from www.cherrycheeksquickstitches.com

Hi everyone, in the recent times I have been very much inspired by Point Lace. I have worked on many Point Lace pieces for trial and error, but this one among all has come up very well. So I wanted to share it with you.

The Design To begin with I made a very simple floral design on a piece of paper. I wanted it to be symmetrical, so I drew half of the design first and traced it onto another paper. I used this traced design to create the balance of the design so that it is symmetrical. I liked this design a lot so I laminated it using a zip-lock bag as I wanted to preserve this design for long time. This was my blue-print.

The Structure Structure Using this blue-print, I traced the design over to a piece of cloth. I made a long Romanian i-cord that would be long enough to run along the floral design. I used pure bamboo yarn from Ice Yarns. This was a good, soft yarn with a needle size of 2.5 to 3 mm to go with. I stitched the Romanian i-cord over to the cloth and stitched those sections of i-cord together which were touching each-other. This would give stability to the motif once it is removed off the cloth.

The fillings Centre filling

Once the structure of the motif was ready, it was time for filling the gaps in the centre and at the petals. For the centre, I chose circle filling stitch. I made a grid using white Red Heart crochet thread in size 10. This was a stiff crochet thread for a needle size of 1.5 to 2 mm. To make the grid I stitched horizontal lines using a tapestry needle. While making the vertical lines, I went over and under the horizontal lines for better grip to the work.

I used this grid as a base to make circular loops at the intersection of the vertical and horizontal lines.

Small Petal filling

I used different types of filling stitches for the petals. I stitched veins from all the sides. I had around 12 veins through-out the petal. I then divided these veins into 2 halfs and went under and over these halfs to make loops. After making around 5 to 6 such loops I left couple of viens closes to the petal on each side and made another 5-6 loops by going around the veins. I repeated this process of making loops and excluding the veins at the sides till I was left with just one or 2 veins at the top of the petal. I concluded the stitch by going around the last few viens and then into the petal (i-cord).

Big Petal filling

For bigger petals, I stitched veins and made a circular loop at the centre.

Removal

Done with the whole motif! I removed the motif from the cloth.

I later stitched this piece over to a plain top which enhanced the look of the garment. Yarn

I used pure bamboo yarn from Ice Yarns. This was a good, soft yarn with a needle size of 2.5 to 3 mm to go with. I made the centre filling stitch using white Red Heart crochet thread in size 10. This was a stiff crochet thread for a needle size of 1.5 to 2 mm.
