The Northern Fashion House (TNFH) is a museum and archive complex, which will include ateliers for aspiring designers to set up their studio, and workshops and public studios open to the community. This project addresses the cloth making legacy of Halifax and explores how fashion translates into architecture, which is my thesis question. # HISTORIES OF PLACE # Situated in HALIFAX

I I . G r o w H a u s /Residential & Communal Growing /Location: Offenbach, Germany

This project looked at how the Offenbach community could grow sustainably by bringing together the new immigrants and the established community through communal growing. The decision on introducing urban growing into a residential scheme was inspired by the urban farms in London in a previous project, where the founder of Loughborough Farm said, ‘WE DON’T JUST GROW FOOD, WE GROW PEOPLE.’ I hope that the smell of produce would remind people displaced from their countries of their home and childhood, and cultural exchange could happen naturally through the communal growing project.

The aim of the project is to celebrate the dying craft- Coracles, in a town which is embedded with a unique history based around the canal and docks. Globalisation leads to the gentrification of towns and cities, with the ever-increasing shopping malls, hotels, houses that look identical etc.... and sadly this is the leading methodology to develope a place on this planet earth. Seaports developments often become yet another commercial and tourists development, resulting in the lost of identity and a disconnection of its historical characteristics. In this project, I challenged this concept of redevelopment, by digging into the history of the Sharpness Canal, docks, and the social aspects within the site, and proposed a design which integrated the need to rejuvenate the aging population in the area, and re-appreciate the dying old craft which was once an important craft around the canal area.

As the building is all about celebrating the crafting of coracles, the overall design depicted the aesthetic and quality of such hand made crafts. Following the notion ‘‘Form and Function as One’’, the aim is to create the form and function in unity.

‘‘Function’’ in this project is defines as the learning journey of visitors- from the museum to workshops, private studio, interactive areas, reading area to the rooftop garden.; from the private, enclosed museum, to the open, interactive studios and lastly to the open rooftop garden to enjoy the view of the docks, to fully immersed one self into the unique history of the Sharpness Docks. The overall design approach was to create a ‘‘Form’’ that could effectively accommodate these ‘‘Functions’’ in unity.

Every culture has its own trend and history in music, and it is one of the very few art form that can relate to every one of us. This project, aiming to design for an international cultural forum that would be occupied by hosts from a city at a time, would accommodate a campus for these students and an open forum to the public to experience the power of music The shape of the building grew from the idea of ‘tied notes’ in music, with the main cylindrical cores representing ‘music notes’ and linked to another core (another ‘note’), through a bridge ( a ‘tie’). The light and open design suggested that just as music could light up our lives and ignite creativity, this building would act as a blank canvas for music from different culture to influence the space; and only through the purest and simplest backdrop can the real colour and life of a culture be revealed.

Steel frame structure and a double-skin facade system is designed to create a light, bright, and simple aesthetic.

This aquarium was designed to celebrate the back-of-house, often secretive machineries and equipment supporting the aquarium. Visitors would enter from the ramp with the view into the back-of-house facilities, leading up to the main tank which featured an immersive experience under the water; and through a maze of tanks, visitors would then arrive at another feature tank with the backdrop of New York City.

The formerly divided city has become a dynamic and vibrant metropolis of creativity in Europe. Our focus is to celebrate the beauty and essence of the umbrella, the movement of opening and closing inspires our design approach. We intend to capture this and re-appropriate it on a large scale. of umbrellas will be a collection of found and donated umbrellas, creating unique space to devour some fine food. The scheme is inherently sustainable, there will always be broken umbrellas. Umbrelini will act as a pop-up space for the public and tourists to taste a variety of gourmet street food as it changes over the seasons. The architectural components are adaptable to any cuisine and will act as a catalyst for future food stalls across Berlin.
