WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE BOOKS?

P also has experience with and exposure to start-ups and SMEs, having created, ran and advised several companies in various sectors in executive as well as non-executive roles, and he is an advisor to not-for-profit organisations, focusing on young leaders of the future, creating exceptional opportunities to inspire and empower young people to develop a mind-set for success, helping them learn best practices to fulfill their aspirations. He holds a M.Sc. in Business Management, Economics and Accountancy with distinction, and a Post-graduate degree in International Finance. He speaks fluent Spanish.

'My book!' The first two I would suggest are very powerful practical books. 1. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. 2. How To Make Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. The third book I would suggest is a book that provides an explanation to some of the dynamics that rule this world we live in. 3. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.

What Does Success Mean To You? Success is subjective and it means something different to each person. To me, I split success in to three ways: being a good father and provider to my daughters, creating new projects and businesses, and loving/giving/sharing and inspiring others. What Is The Best Advice You Have Ever Received? That life is about commitment. You have to be committed to everything, specifically your goals, no matter what the situation.

06 STOP. Do It Now!

Why Do You Think Many People Fail To Achieve Success? I believe that nobody “fails” to succeed; it is more that people fail to “see the lesson”. Life is about learning, you either learn the hard way, or you learn from others that know more and have the skills you lack. In life you either study them or you hire them. What One Thing Would You Tell Entrepreneurs To, “STOP. Do It Now!?" The biggest thing is to BELIEVE and to also BE and LOVE YOU! Remember you are unique and special as there is only one of you in this universe!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT EXERCISE TIME!

Share with us an exercise entrepreneurs can do right now to clear their head and get them ready to work on building their business to the next level. This is very simple: do three things before 11AM every day. The first thing you can do is to wake up and smile, be grateful about at least 3 key things in your life, starting with having another day to be able to become a better version of you and providing a service to society. The second is to exercise, meditate, or carry out any activity that helps you get in your best zone.

The third is to take 1 to 3 key actions, including: 1) Reviewing your priorities for the day. 2) Action the hardest/most difficult task. 3) Making at least one phone call. If you do all of the above, everyday, or at least 3-5 times a week, you will see immediate results, which will compound and help you make all your dreams a reality. Guaranteed.

Do You Have A Book Coming Out? Yes, I do! My book: LIFE TRANSFORMATION ... NEWS: IN THE KNOW "Success is like a game, you do better if you read the instructions.” Cheryl-Jamie Knock

T

The Entrepreneurs Journey is a road less travelled and a game less played due to the outcome uncertainty. It is taking a leap of faith, whole-heartedly, knowing there is no safety net underneath, but why would someone do this? Why would they risk it? The answer…because they possess VISION and value their future circumstances more than their present. The business world is a dog eat dog world the same, as Pacman is a dot eat dot world. Some rise to the challenge, some only ever stay at Level 1, whilst others climb further up the Hi-Score Leaderboard. But what is it that sets these players apart from one another? With enemies all around, entrepreneurs are left to navigate the maze that is life, often alone with no support. But what if you had a formula, a step-by-step plan to success and the stages you had to climb to rise to the top? Would that make a difference? Would that help you? At STOP. Do It Now! We have created an online, 7 STEPS TO SUCCESS COURSE, beginning June 1st, to help you navigate through the maze of entrepreneurship, so that you don’t have to go it alone! We are here to help. To find out more and to register your interest, email: success@stopdoitnow.com We will be in touch!

Wolf of Wall Street Jordan Belfort Live in London May 30 | The man behind the best-selling book and record breaking movie tells his story and gives us tips on how to be successful in business.

He swindled millions of dollars from investors, lavishly brought mansions and sports cars, developed a frightening drug habit, and eventually spent four years in prison repaying for it all. But now Jordan Belfort’s story has been turned into a best selling book and a critically acclaimed film. A natural salesman, Belfort launched a business selling meat and seafood, but after the company was unsuccessful he turned his sales skills to a different area. After spending two years training as a stock broker Belfort started his own trading company, Stratton Oakmont. Alongside his partner Danny Porush, Belfort raked in the cash fast with a “pump and dump” scheme. This comprised of pushing stocks onto unsuspecting clients, helping to inflate the stock prices, then the company would sell off its own holdings in these stocks, earning a vast profit.

With more money then sense Belfort started enjoying the high-life. Grand houses, expensive gadgets and swanky cars were all a part of every day life. Also was the development of a worrying drug habit. Belfort’s addictions lead him to be involved in a variety of accidents including crashing a helicopter and sinking a yacht. Life after prison lead him to release a book of his memoirs 'The Wolf of Wall Street' in 2008. This was then later adapted into the 2013 film staring Leonardo DiCaprio.

MY DAILY ROUTINE MORNING:

LIFE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR

4.30am - 9am: I am an early bird! I love the morning’s. I wake up at 4.30am, I do 45 minutes exercise, shower, have breakfast and am dressed and ready to work by 6.00am! This gives me a 3 hour head start on the world. From 6am, I check my emails, I prep any work that needs to go out by 9am, then make all my necessary calls and enquiries as soon as the rest of the working world wakes up! I then make sure my three most important tasks for the day are completed by 11am!

Cheryl-Jamie is a young driven female entrepreneur, businesswoman, founder, blogger and author. She is a serial entrepreneur and the brainchild of 15 different brands.

THE FACE BEHIND THE BRANDS

I B

t all started with one woman, one goal, one vision.

ack in September 2011, Cheryl-Jamie Knock, a recent fashion graduate, had a lightbulb moment. She came up with three ideas to help bridge the gap between graduates making their first step on to the fashion industry ladder.

O

ff-The-Rail was born to help graduates by selling their collections online as well as providing marketing aid and professional photographs for their portfolios.

O

ff-The-Press was born to help graduates by providing them with up to date, to the point fashion information regarding the who, what, when, where and why of the industry.

MY DAILY ROUTINE AFTERNOON:

O

ff-The-Street was born to showcase street style inspiration, with individuals sharing their unique look and thus creating an inspiring and visual online look book.

P

romoo was born to Ignite Enterprise in the UK. It provides first time startup entrepreneurs a one stop shop for all their marketing needs.

S

TOP. Do It Now! was born to be the Ultimate Entrepreneurs Handbook. A straight-talking, to the point guide to the Who, What, When, where, Why and How of entrepreneurship.

T

he above brands are a few to name a selection, however Cheryl setup her first two companies at the age of 24 and subsequently went on to set up her third as well as being due to publish her first non-fiction book this year at the age of 26.

E

mbarking on the journey of entrepreneurship isn’t easy though nothing in life ever is BUT what I can tell you is that it will definitely be worth it. In the beginning you will struggle either finding the idea or being motivated to keep pushing but you have to keep going. Push past the negative voice and prove them wrong. You can do it! You can do anything you put your mind to. After all, you only need to trick your brain, it is a mental game, the question is who will you let win? You or your brain?

2pm - 7pm: I check my daily task list to see how much I have achieved, what do I still have left to do and then I re-order and prioritise the rest of today’s tasks and delegate anything that is important but doesn’t need my attention. After re-ordering, I make sure I complete the most important task first.

MY DAILY ROUTINE EVENING: 10pm -11pm: For me, the first part of the evening is all about reflection. How did the day go overall? What did I end up achieving? What didn’t I achieve? What do I need to achieve tomorrow? The second part is about strategy, I solidify and amend my plan for the next day and familiarise myself with my schedule and meetings I have in place. My outfit and bag are ready for the next day and I end with writing one page in my gratitude book.

INSPIRE:

MY 10 KEY HABITS 1. Today vs Tomorrow If I can get a task completed today, I will make sure I do it today, instead of leaving it for tomorrow. 2. Understand Your Trigger: I spend a few moments remembering why I am doing what I am doing and why it is so important to me. 3. Visualise: I spend 5 minutes looking at my vision wall and visualise my why to reinforce the connection and motivation. 4. Be An Early Bird: We all have 24 hours in a day so we need to be careful how we choose to spend these. I am an early riser and wake up at 4.30am. 5. Learn To Switch Off: I don’t let negativity impact me, I really try to switch off to it and block it out. Only positive thoughts around me please! 6. Become The Expert: I don’t know everything, but I want to know everything and that’s the difference. I make sure I read a couple of pages everyday. Knowledge is power! 7. Plan Ahead: I am a planner, so I make sure I plan out my days and group journeys and tasks together to save time. The more planning you do the more prepared you are for the day. 8. Implement Targets: I give myself targets for the day, week, month and year, which for me is the only way I can make sure I attain my goals. This enables me to take each day as one step and I acknowledge that it is one step closer to achieving what I want. 9. Assess Your Priorities: I have a daily to-do list which I order in terms of priority. I write down my Top 3 tasks for the day and try to complete these by 11am.

10. Master Delegation: I realise that I don’t need to do everything myself. I write my list and delegate any tasks that need to be done but don’t require my immediate attention.

24 STOP. Do It Now!

W

e all know that work-related stress is a massive part of any profession nowadays, be it if you’re working as a server in a busy fast food restaurant, or as a director of a multi-national company. Entrepreneurship is no exception. Entrepreneurship can be rewarding yet stressful, as entrepreneurial tasks are associated with risk, income and outcome uncertainty, intense work effort, and long working hours (Uy, Foo & Song, 2013). When you consider that roughly 19 million microbusinesses in Europe have owners whose primary role is dealing

with operations and management (SMEs, 2002), the level of workplace-related stress and the need to engage in effective coping is of great importance for entrepreneurs and business owners. Effective coping is important for both our personal and psychological well-being, as well as for effective work performance. There are different ways that we can cope with difficult situations. Coping strategies are simply a plan of action that we follow, either in anticipation of coming across a potential stressor, or as a direct response to stress as it occurs. In this article, I’m

et’s take an example. You’ve received an answer machine message from a client, angry that you haven’t got back in touch with them over a quote you were going to give them, threatening you with all sorts of angry things. Obviously we might think that the best thing to do in this situation would be to call them back straight away and sort out the issue. BUT as much as we’d like to think we always do the right thing straight away, let’s be realistic. I’m sure you’ve all been there, in stressful situations like this, we often step back and try and put the situation out of our minds. We might go out for a drink with friends or pop to the shops, every time the stressor pops into our head we try and think of something else. This is what would be termed avoidance coping. It’s our body telling us that ok, this does need to be sorted out, but actually at the moment I want to temporarily take myself out of this situation and take my mind off it. However, as entrepreneurs it’s important for us to then step back into the situation and sort it out, in this case ringing the client back and explaining the situation sweetly to calm them down! This is active coping – addressing the situation and sorting it out to the best of your ability. Uy et al. (2013) suggest that entrepreneurs fluctuate between taking active steps to address their venture issues head on and avoidance, by temporarily distancing themselves from the venture-related problems.

U

y et al. (2013) carried out an interesting study looking into coping and how it impacts on entrepreneur’s wellbeing. They looked into the relationship between 156 entrepreneurs’ active and avoidance coping on psychological wellbeing and alongside this, looked at how their coping was related to start-up experience. The authors found that the use of avoidance

coping positively predicted immediate psychological well-being for entrepreneurs with more start-up experience. Interestingly, this relationship was negative for entrepreneurs with less start-up experience – so in other words, less-experienced entrepreneurs may benefit from active coping, rather than avoiding the situation completely. The authors also found that over the period that they carried out the study, entrepreneurs who used avoidance coping had improved psychological well-being only if they used active coping alongside it (so don’t just put your problem to the back of your brain and forget about it, that’ll just lead to bigger problems and stress in the future!).

S

o, what does this tell us? Well for one thing, avoidance coping isn’t ‘bad’, and can actually be good for our psychological well-being. Sometimes we need to just step away from whatever it is that is stressing us out, pour ourselves a drink, and have a good old gossip with friends where work is the last thing on our mind! BUT it is important as entrepreneurs and business owners to always step back up to the plate and perform active coping to sort out problems in the end. So next time you encounter a stressful situation in your entrepreneurial ventures, think back to this article, and don’t feel bad if you do some avoidance coping, so long as you always go back to active coping in the end!
