As we start a new year, here’s a perfect opportunity to get a taste of some of the great area restaurants you might not have tried before! Calvert County Economic Development is hosting its first Restaurant Week from Feb. 1-10. (It’s obviously longer than a week, to include two weekends!) At press time, about 30 restaurants are participating. Check their web site at choosecalvert.com for the most up-to-date list. Here’s how it works: Restaurant Week features local establishments that draw on our region's bounty and offer unique dining experiences. Whether you love local seafood, traditional American, Pub Grub, Italian, or anything in between, Restaurant Week has something to satisfy your cravings. Participating restaurants are offering lunch specials ranging from $10 to $15, and dinners from $20 to $30. Tax, tips, beverages and bar drinks are not included. Of course, restaurants will still offer their regular menus during the promotional week, but the prix fixe menus will likely offer several courses so they are an exceptional value. Diners are encouraged to make Restaurant Week reservations early, and check the list on pages 22-23 or scan the Current Code with your smart phone to see if there are any late additions. But don’t just eat out during Restaurant Week! Check out this issue of Chesapeake Current Cuisine for lots of scrumptious local establishments – and figure out where you want to go for your Valentine’s date night, too! Until our next issue… Sincerely,

Diane Burr Founder/Owner, Chesapeake Current Cuisine ™ Chesapeake Current™, and Chesapeake Bay Tripper™

Well Done! FRESH, NEW LOOK FOR

Mamma Lucia

I

f you’ve been to Italy, you know it’s amazingly beautiful. The architecture, the people, the style and of course the food is incredible. That said, we’re so lucky to have two Mamma Lucia restaurants serving authentic Italian fare here. And now Mamma in Dunkirk is getting a wonderful makeover with owners Maria and Salvatore “Sal” Lubrano just completing phase one of an extensive remodeling and expansion. If you thought the newer Prince Frederick Restaurant was gorgeous, wait until you see this! There’s nothing like it in Calvert County. It’s as contemporary, yet as inviting, as any of the trendy places you’d find in Georgetown, Dupont Circle or Annapolis! There’s a new entrance that leads to the “more casual” side, as Maria explains. And they also have added a back entrance and more parking in the rear

to help alleviate congestion during their busiest times. Their signature is etched on the windows. “People have said they thought our Mamma Lucia logo is a woman’s face, they see all kinds of things,” Maria says, “but actually, it’s a map of the shoreline of Naples, Italy with the little islands.” Although Maria says they really did not really increase the seating capacity by incorporating the space next door feels so spacious and comfortable. “I think it is more like Prince Frederick now,” she says. “We wanted some flair! Something sophisticated!” Maria says she insisted on designing a “woman-friendly” bar, so be sure to look for the purse hooks she had installed underneath the bar for each stool. The sparkling granite countertop on the

bar was picked out by their daughter. Maria teases, “Wait until you see the new bathrooms!” They’ve named the back of the new section ‘Rico’s Bar & Lounge’ after their son, Enrico, who recently graduated from John Carroll University with a degree in business management and has come home to help run the family business. Rico says of his parents with a chuckle, “But I don’t think they’ll ever retire!” He is the only one of their 22-year-old triplets (two boys and one girl) who’s interested in the restaurant. Rico was instrumental in the redesign as well and is now working alongside his parents every day. You’ll be able to recognize him immediately – he looks just like his dad. “I don’t think you’d ever feel over-dressed or under-dressed when you come here,” Rico says. “We wanted it to be family-friendly, but a place that’s still fun.” The décor is a striking pallet of earth tones and warm reds that remind you of a steamy loaf of crusty bread and a smooth glass of Chianti. What makes it so intriguing, so special is the stunning artwork. Each piece tells many stories, all about Italy and - Italians. The Warhol-inspired Italian compilations were created by Jesalis, a long-time artist friend from Baltimore, who pulled photos of Porto Monte di Procida, Italy – the Lubrano’s hometown - from Maria’s Facebook page. “I compiled iconographic things the owners loved and morphed them together in different layers,” Jesalis told us by phone. From Andrea Bocelli and Sophia Loren to Donatella Versace and Italian soccer stars, the new Mamma Lucia’s is like dining in an Italian pop art museum. Look closely and you’ll pick out Ferraris, Vespas, Martinis, Roman ruins, scenes from classic Italian movies, maps of the Amalfi Coast, and so much more that defines the culture. Son Rico, and owners Sal and Maria Lubrano in the newly remodeled section of Mamma Lucia’s in Dunkirk.

Many of the canvases are very personal. One shows a young Sal playing soccer. Others are photos of their relatives back home in Italy who still work as fishermen, “just like the people around here,” Maria adds. “There’s a story for each one,” Rico says. “Of course we have stories for the photos, but you can make your own stories and memories here, too.” This is the second facelift they’ve given the Dunkirk restaurant in its 16 years at this location. They’re also enlarging and updating the kitchen at the same time. Now that they’ve finished the ‘more casual’ side, they plan to begin renovating the original dining room. Maria says, “We are going to add windows on the outside wall to allow more natural light inside, like in the front. It will also be more upscale, more of a formal dining area on the other side.” The new décor prefectly compliments Mamma Lucia’s consistently delicious cuisine. Both locations feature extensive menus with antipasta (appetizers), specialty pizzas, fresh pasta dishes, delizie del mare (seafood), vitello (veal), and pollo (chicken). Ask them about their daily specials, too. If you love hot, crusty Italian bread, Mamma Lucia’s will not disappoint. But save some space for some dolci (desserts), ranging from canolis and tiramisu to spumone and tartufo.

Well Done! TAKE A LOOK AT

Crooked I

C

rooked I Sports Bar & Grill is a neighborhood place in Chesapeake Beach where you can meet up with friends, watch the game on their big screen TVs, grab a beer or get a bite to eat. And with its move across the street, it’s taken on an entirely different look – and an all-new menu that’s worth checking out. Co-owners Chris Russell and Rick Crump say if you haven’t been in Crooked I lately, you’re invited to stop in because you may be pleasantly surprised. “We revamped the menu to feature more small plates and sliders – and about half the menu is now under $5.” Russell adds that they still have your favorite full-course meals as well, including the nightly Prime Rib special, a generous 14-ounce cut. For Calvert Restaurant Week (Feb. 1-10), Crooked

I’s Lunch Special for $12.99 gives you a lot for your money. Choose either a garden salad, or any slider meal (choice of 3 sliders with fries) and a dessert. Or, you can get a Club Sandwich (triple-decker style) with your choice of crab soup or dessert. For dinner during Restaurant Week, for $23.99 per person, you can have a dinner salad, prime rib dinner, vegetable and potato of the day, plus dessert. Or you can choose a salad, one pound of steamed jumbo shrimp and dessert for the same price. You’ll find a comfortable atmosphere at Crooked I along with plenty of things to do. “We have the commercial pull-tabs Instant Bingo, and DJ’s on Friday and Saturday nights. We’re also starting to bring in bands every month,

so watch for our live music. Wednesday is Trivia Night, which is free, and the winner gets a $25 gift card,” Russell adds. “Tuesdays and Thursdays, we have World Tavern Poker. It’s free to play, and you can win coins. And with those you can win a trip to Las Vegas, and a chance to win $1 million!” Russell says. They also have Happy Hour every day from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and all day on Sundays. So keep your eye on Crooked I – it’s definitely worth more than a passing glance!
