HONORING THOSE

Who Farm

E

dwin Remsberg is an award-winning photographer with an eye for detail. He’s a farmer himself, raising sheep and growing alfalfa hay on his 20-acre Maple Grove Farm in Harford County. This unique perspective prompted the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) to commission him to capture images of other farmers for a unique project you can now enjoy. His new exhibit, called “Maryland Farmers: The Faces of the Land” is on display at the Miller Senate Office Building in Annapolis in the second floor lobby near the Education, Health and Environmental Affairs hearing room. The exhibit features twelve archival, 20” by 30” photographic prints of Maryland farmers who make their living in different ways. Of course, the photo we like best is the one Edwin let us use on the cover of this issue of Chesapeake Current Cuisine featuring Joe-Sam Swann of Owings, a regular at the North Beach Friday Night Farmers’ Market, which opens for 2013 on Friday, May 3. Remsberg and Swann are both in the Lead Maryland, an MDA program that is encouraging rising stars in the state’s agriculture industry. In January, the cohort traveled to Chile, which has a climate much like ours in Maryland, to learn more about their farmers, crops and booming agriculture-related industries.

Remsberg tells us, “It allowed us to see ourselves from the outside and gain insight into agriculture from a global aspect.” “It’s not about what we are,” Remsberg tells us. “It’s who we are. All over the world, there are the same issues in agriculture. Human beings have to eat. And the people involved in farming are very passionate about what they do. Economically –it’s not easy to be a farmer. So it has to be something you love, a passion you have.” His personal perspective as a farmer has helped him to capture images that celebrate the identity of the people, places and practices in our state. He describes Maryland Farmers as “necessary providers.” “Everyone eats. But you don’t often think about where your food comes from, and all the work that someone puts into growing it, harvesting it, and getting it to your dinner table,” Remsberg says. Through the portraits, he has developed a commentary on the values of these men and women who devote their life’s work to feed people of our state and contribute to growth and sustainability of our local economies. The photos, Remsberg says, give you a window, "to see people, farmers, not just defined by what they do with their hands, but by what they do with their hearts." A cohort of Maryland farmers traveled this year to Chile to learn about that nation’s agriculture industry, including their famous wine-making. Local farmer Joe-Sam Swann of Owings, a favorite at the North Beach Friday Night Farmers’ Market, was part of that group (in jeans, lower right photo).

“It’s a real honor to have these photos displayed in this wonderful venue, in a public space,” he says. “It’s a vehicle to give us a voice. And through these pictures, we tell these farmers’ stories.” One photo shows a poultry farmer on the Eastern Shore. Another is a dairy farmer in Northern Maryland. Another farmer he has photographed is Brian Westbrook, originally from Hyattsville, who retired after nine seasons as a running back with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers and moved back to Maryland. Westbrook now lives on a horse farm and operates riding stables in nearby Upper Marlboro. “We are thrilled that Edwin Remsberg’s exhibit will be on display in a space with high visibility for Maryland's leaders and decision makers starting with the 2013 Maryland General Assembly Session and remaining up the rest of the year,” said Agriculture Secretary Buddy Hance of Calvert County. “Edwin captures remarkable images that celebrate the identity of the people, places and practices of Maryland. We are honored that he dedicates his talent to featuring the people and the stories of Maryland agriculture.” The photographs will be permanently displayed at MDA headquarters in Annapolis following the exhibition at the statehouse. For more information about Edwin Remsberg, visit his web site at remsberg.com.
