New Lighthouse

Stay-Cation!

E

ver wanted to spend the night at a lighthouse? Here’s your chance! After years of planning, fundraising, and preservation, the Cove Point Lighthouse Keeper’s home is now available as a stay-cation rental and special event site. It’s the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in Maryland, having stood watch over the Chesapeake Bay for over 150 years at the southern end of Calvert County. The lighthouse was built in 1828 by John Donohoo, the Bay’s most renowned lighthouse builder. The 38-foot truncated tower was built four miles north of the entrance to the Patuxent River to mark the shoal that extended out toward the shipping channel.

not lived there for years since the light is fully automated from Baltimore by the Coast Guard. There were a total of 20 keepers and their families living at the site until 1958. Between 1958 to 1986, the Cove Point Lighthouse was manned exclusively by Coast Guard personnel. Overnight guests today will not have to rough it like the early keepers did. The 2 ½ story keeper’s duplex has been renovated from top to bottom, with all the comforts you could hope for in a home away from home. The project was made possible through a series grants and donations from suppliers and local contractors. Each of the two rental units includes three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, one half bath, a washer and dryer, Wi-Fi, flat screen TV’s, updated kitchens, central The Calvert Marine Museum became heat and air, a screened porch, and all the its official “keeper” in 2000, although its modern conveniences of home. Many of beacon still shines brightly to help ships the home’s original features have been navigate through the area. Keepers have retained and restored, including hard pine floors, cast iron heaters, deep windowsills, doors, moldings, and eyebrow windows. The interior is decorated with a mix of old and new and includes photos from museum archives and locally built 391 West Bay Front Road • Lothian, Maryland 20711 • 410-867-9500 furniture, as well 1721 West Braddock Road • Alexandria, Virginia • 703-998-3030 as a one of a kind www.greenstreetgardens.com table made from

the reclaimed wood of the dismantled Cedar Point Lighthouse. The kitchen cabinets were handcrafted locally and the tile that was laid captures the character of a 1925 home. To add interest to the site, portions of the drywall have been removed to expose some of the features of the original 1½ story home, which were covered when it was enlarged in 1925. It sits on four acres, and comes with your own private beach! It’s at a very narrow part of the Bay, just seven miles from the Eastern shore at that Cove Point. Visitors will be able to rent the site for three, four, or seven day periods and can choose to rent one side of the duplex, or open up the doors dividing the two sides and use all six bedrooms. It’s an idyllic place to slow down and enjoy uninterrupted time with your family and friends. The grounds have been landscaped and designed to accommodate a casual wedding, reunion, or family event. Since this mixed-use lighthouse site is still a fully functioning site, in addition to being a vacation rental, it will continue to welcome the public during the summer season for tours of the grounds. Located just over an hour from Washington DC and Baltimore, Cove Point is easy to get to, but feels like it is a million miles away from it all. Proceeds from this beautiful rental site will support the Calvert Marine Museum and a lighthouse endowment set up for its continued care. To be one of the first to stay in this remarkable historic site, call (410) 474-5370. Be sure to tell them you learned about the Cove Point Lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay Tripper!

Visiting Cove Point Lighthouse for the Day Cove Point is a beautiful site on the Chesapeake Bay where you can look back at the Calvert Cliffs, see across to the Eastern Shore, and observe the LNG (liquid natural gas) platform to the north. There is a small observation platform that lets you look over the fence for an unobstructed view of these sights, as well as maritime traffic going up and down the bay. A museum interpreter is on site to greet visitors and answer questions. Interpretive panels tell the story of the lighthouse, its keepers, and the Cove Point area in detail. Visitors can enter the base of the lighthouse tower and look up the spiral staircase. Since the light will continue to shine as a U.S. Coast Guard aid-to-navigation, the lantern room is off limits to the public. It’s located at 3500 Lighthouse Boulevard, Lusby, MD 20657. Access to the lighthouse grounds is provided: June through August: Open daily 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. May and September: Weekends and Holidays 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Closed October through April August 2012 CHESAPEAKE BAY TRIPPER

Historic Oyster Wars Cannon on Display The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is partnering with the Calvert Marine Museum to exhibit a unique cannon from the oyster wars in the lobby now through September 30. The original cannon was acquired by DNR and used by the Maryland State Oyster Police Force to control the oyster harvest in the Chesapeake Bay in the 1900s. Gregory Bartles, Lieutenant Commander of Area 8 and Agency Historian was instrumental in securing the cannon and seeing that it is made accessible to the public. He will give a talk on Thursday, August 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the museum auditorium. Admission is FREE. “This cannon is not only a terrific piece of Maryland history, but a representation of our State’s commitment to protecting our valuable natural resources,” said DNR Secretary John Griffin. “We are honored to preserve this great artifact for the enjoyment of future generations of Marylanders.” Acquired in 1868 by Hunter Davidson, the first Commander of the Maryland State Oyster Police Force, the cannon was first installed on the original steam-powered patrol boat of Maryland’s “Oyster Navy,” the Leila. In 1884, this ship was replaced by the Governor R.M. McLane, which fought many spectacular

battles against oyster pirates. The McLane was equipped with a 12-pound Dahlgreen boat howitzer in 1888. While accounts are not definitive, authorities believe that this short-barreled gun may have been the original cannon from the Leila.

The Calvert Marine Museum presents Lieutenant Gregory L. Bartles speaking on The Chesapeake Oyster Wars in the museum’s auditorium on Thursday, August 2 at 7:00 p.m. Lt. Bartles is the Area 8 Commander/Agency Historian for the Maryland Natural Resources Police and was responsible for bringing the oyster war cannon to DNR. The lecture is free and open to the public. Lt. Bartles will discuss the early laws protecting Maryland’s oyster industry in the 1830’s and the dramatic period known as the Oyster Wars of Chesapeake Bay. He will describe the evolution of Maryland’s oldest State law enforcement agency, the Natural Resources Police (NRP). NRP can trace its origins to the creation of the Maryland Oyster Police in 1868 and the Office of State Game Warden in 1896. Part of his lecture will focus on the history of the Oyster War cannon and how it came back to NRP in December 2010.

Get Your Boat Inspected, Meet A Celeb John Greviskis, host of Ship Shape TV, will appear as the celebrity guest at the First Annual American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Boating Safety Clinic. The clinic will be held Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, 723 2nd Street, Annapolis, MD 21403. Free, in-water boat inspections will be completed by ABYC certified marine surveyors. There will also be certified technicians on-site to suggest repairs. The boat operator will take away a checklist that includes electrical, fuel, exhaust, equipment, and signage areas. Boats of all types must be registered prior to the event and can be done via www.abycboatingsafetyclinic.com. “The American Boat and Yacht Council is a go-to resource for the marine community regarding safety, standards and regulations,” said John Adey, ABYC President. “We want all boat operators to have that same life-saving education.” Greviskis has been instrumental in reaching boat operators. For more than 13 years, he has addressed different projects, repairs and improvements on his show alongside marine industry leaders. A program schedule can be viewed at http://www.shipshapetv.com/. "It’s humbling to be affiliated with such a wonderful organization that cares about the same core values as I do,” said Greviskis. “The ABYC is a conglomerate of the best minds in the marine industry.” To help promote that safety is fun, interactive demonstrations and guidelines will shared by on-site vendors who contribute, are related to, and have an expressed interest in safe boating such as the National Safe Boating Congress, the MD Department of Natural Resources, Boat US, United States Coast Guard, and many more. The museum, just one block away from ABYC headquarters, will be open for tours. Food and kid’s play will also be on-site. A silent-auction will also be held.

Maryland Pushes For Harriet Tubman Memorial

Harriet Tubman, Circa 1885. Smithsonian Museum photograph, National Portrait Gallery. Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski, and Congressman Andy Harris are requesting establishment of a national monument to recognize the tremendous contributions of Harriet Tubman and preserve the unique landscape associated with her life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and the Underground Railroad. Tubman was born a slave in Dorchester County, MD in 1822, escaping in 1849 and continuously risking her life to lead many others to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Tubman also served as a nurse and a spy for the Union during the Civil War. She later became active in the women’s suffrage movement and created a home “for aged and indigent colored people” before her death on March 10, 1913 in Auburn, NY. “Federal recognition of Harriet Tubman, one of our nation’s great freedom and equal rights heroes, is long overdue,” O’Malley says. “A national monument designation will further our commitment to share her courageous life story and legacy of justice, and protect the rural landscape of her birthplace on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.” “A national monument designation commemorating the extraordinary life of Harriet Tubman is an important step in the process of establishing National Historic Parks to honor her,” said Senator Cardin. “Tubman was an iconic figure in our nation’s history, and I think it’s a good idea to move ahead with the monument designation now, while we continue to work in Congress for legislation to authorize the establishment of the two national parks – one in Maryland and one in New York – to commemorate one of America’s greatest heroes.”

“Harriet Tubman was a courageous fighter who delivered scores of slaves to freedom on her Underground Railroad,” said Senator Mikulski, recipient of the 2012 Harriet Tubman Lifetime Achievement Award. “She was tireless in her commitment to fight for those who could not fight themselves. Designating a national monument here on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is an important step as we move toward the establishment of National Historic Parks to commemorate her heroic works.” “Harriet Tubman, herself a former-slave who conducted the Underground Railroad, courageously led the fight against slavery,” said Congressman Harris. “I am proud to support an American hero like Tubman. By our request to designate a national monument, we can honor and preserve her legacy.” On July 11, more than 80 people attended a public meeting held in Cambridge, Maryland to share their thoughts and support for establishment of a national park system unit on Maryland’s Eastern Shore honoring Tubman. "Harriet Tubman gave enslaved people and all people the hope of fighting injustices through her work on the Underground Railroad. And now it is time to reward her for her bravery and humanitarian work," said Donald Pinder, President of the Harriet Tubman Organization. "The designation of the monument is vitally important to the tourism industry of the Eastern Shore,” said Susan Meredith, co-owner of Blackwater Paddle and Pedal. “Having a National Park Service unit here means more visitors, more jobs and a better environment to grow businesses in our communities." In 2008, the National Park Service (NPS) completed a study assessing the sites and resources associated with Tubman. Senators Cardin and Mikulski, along with their New York colleagues introduced legislation (S.247) to establish national historical parks in Maryland and New York. The bill was passed by the Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee; however it remains unclear when the legislation will be voted on by the full Senate and House. Congressmen Harris and Hanna also introduced legislation in the U.S. House of

Representatives, H.R. 4007. The national monument designation will serve as an intermediate step to fulfilling the greater vision of establishing national historical parks to honor Tubman. Of the 80,000 properties on the National Register of Historic Places, only 3 percent recognize the contributions and convey the stories of minorities and women. Maryland’s proposal for a monument will focus on lands owned or managed by the federal government, including Stewart’s Canal and other parts of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, significant to Tubman’s early life in Dorchester County. The Conservation Fund is donating a 480-acre property, adjacent to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, known as the Jacob Jackson Home Site. Jacob Jackson was a free black who used coded letters to help Tubman communicate with family and others. “Harriet Tubman is a true American hero, whose journeys along the Eastern Shore will mark Maryland forever,” said Bill Crouch, The Conservation Fund’s Maryland director. “The Conservation Fund is honored to donate this historic property for this potential national monument.” Maryland’s Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park will also be included within the national monument’s boundary. Groundbreaking on the State Park will occur in March of 2013 and include interpretive trails, a spiritual reflection garden and memorial, picnic pavilion, outdoor exhibits and a visitor center. The planned, 15,000 square-foot, LEED-certified visitor center will immerse guests into the life of Tubman, starting with her childhood,

following her times as a conductor on the Underground Railroad, and culminating with her continuous advocacy for justice. “The descendants of Harriet Tubman, local residents, and historians whom have advocated for recognition and celebration of her legacy over recent decades have so much to offer to both the National and Maryland Park Services as we progress in these special projects,” said Nita Settina, Maryland Park Service Superintendent. “We look forward to continuing to work closely with these dedicated advocates as we further develop the State Park and national monument.” Designated in 2009 as one of the best scenic driving tours in the nation, Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Scenic Byway travels through 125-miles of Tubman's homeland. The Byway, developed in partnership with the Maryland Office of Tourism and the tourism offices of Dorchester and Caroline Counties, serves as a heritage, tourism and community development initiative. The project will coordinate the marketing and visitor experience with development of multiple projects along the Byway, including the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and the proposed National Monument and National Historical Park. “Establishment of a national monument is a fitting tribute as we prepare for the 2013 Harriet Tubman Centennial Commemoration,” said Christian Johansson, Secretary for the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development. “The designation will also further enhance the credibility of the sites along the Byway.”
