St. Mary’s Wineries Win Gold Wineries in St. Mary’s County continue to pick up medals in both state and regional competitions. "Both Slack and Port of Leonardtown have earned multiple golds and 'best in class' honors in their first few years of production," says Kevin Atticks, Maryland Wineries Association Executive Director in a news release. “This is further proof that St. Mary’s County - and Southern Maryland, in general - is prime viticultural land.” St. Mary’s County wineries brought home 19 medals from the 2012 WineMaster Choice Awards. Of Maryland’s 48 wineries judged in the blind tastings, Slack and Port of Leonardtown combined received more medals than any other, and each had a wine named Best in Class. Port of Leonardtown’s Chambourcin 2010 and Slack’s Danny Boy 2010 received gold medals and Best in Class Red and Best in Class Off-Dry, respectively. Together, Slack and Port of Leonardtown were awarded nine silver and six bronze medals. The two wineries also received recognition at the 2012 Maryland Governor’s Cup. And at the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition 2012, Port of Leonardtown competed against 95 wineries from ten states and was awarded two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. Slack competed in the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, the largest American wine competition with over 6,000 entries, where its White Shoals 2009 was awarded a bronze medal. At the Eastern International Wine Competitions in 2012, Slack’s wines won a silver and two bronze medals. St. Mary’s County’s fledgling wine industry only has 76 acres of grapes in production. Its two wineries, Port of Leonardtown Winery and Slack Winery, have both been around for less than four years old. Both wineries use locally grown grapes and offer tastings and tours. Slack is Maryland’s only inn and winery combo.
A-MAZE-ing Fall Fun A massive maze, hayrides, an underground slide, a corn pit, a “jumping pillow” and a pumpkin patch – this is just the beginning of the family fun planned at Greenstreet Gardens in Lothian this fall. Ray Greetstreet, who co-owns the mega-nursery with his wife, Stacy says they are again going all out. Last year, they estimate that up to 15,000 people came to their events in late September through Halloween. “Our theme this year is ‘What’s Lurking Under That Leaf?” Lots of things could be hiding there. Bugs? Spiders? Snakes? Lots of surprises,” Greenstreet says. In keeping with this theme, they showed the movie “ANTZ” at the end of September, and their corn maze design this year is a spider in a web. So how did they make this awesome six-acre maze? Ray doesn’t want to give away all their secrets, but it’s a complicated undertaking. “We had our web person make the design, and we put it on paper. Our field and maze are digitized, so we laid that on top of the ground and then put in the GPS coordinates,” he says. Then using GPS, they create the design. Greenstreet adds that cutting or mowing the design into the corn doesn’t work well, because the corn stalks on other side tend to collapse in. They have a much better plan. “When the corn is just a few inches tall, we go out and spray the design with a herbicide to create the trails. That way, the corn stalks on both sides of the trail grow stronger and hold up their companions. It makes the corn grow much stronger.” This year, the corn maze will be open during the day on Saturdays and Sundays for everyone. Then, they will have it open at night both days the last weekend of October “so it’s a lot scarier for older kids,” Greenstreet says. If you’re intimidated by the big maze, they have another smaller maze built out of bales of straw. But speaking of corn, their 60 by 60 foot corn pit is always a big hit with both the kids and adults. It’s like one of those “ball rooms” except filled with corn. “It’s like a huge sandbox, with about 400 bushels of shelled corn in it,” Greenstreet says. “It has an unbelievable dexterity and you have to get in there, feel it to believe it!” Special events during their Fall Festival include Ladies Night on Thursday, October 4 from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. It’s a “murder mystery” night so ladies, break out your best “pageant dress!” And don’t miss their annual Howl-oween Costume Contest (for dogs only – sorry, no cats!) on Saturday, October 20. Arrive at 9:45 a.m. to register your dog. Judging begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. Prizes will be given for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place best costumes. Every dog that enters gets a free trick-or-treat goody bag. Even if you don’t have a dog, come for the doggie costume parade. It’s a fun photo opportunity! Greenstreet Gardens is located at 391 West Bay Front Road in Lothian. The fall festival is every Saturday and Sunday through the end of October from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. There is an admission cost, but it covers everything (except food) so the kids can do whatever they want as many times as they want! The Lothian Ruritan Club hosts a “Burger Burn” during the Greenstreet Fall Festival with the proceeds supporting Ruritan scholarships and projects. October 2012 CHESAPEAKE BAY TRIPPER

Did you know that there’s a statue of “Roots” author Alex Haley at the Annapolis waterfront? That’s another day trip you might want to take sometime, since Annapolis is where Kunta Kinte, the main character of Haley’s blockbuster novel and movie was brought here from Africa in 1767. The Maryland Office of Tourism has developed several suggested day trips to trace African-American Heritage, and this is one of them. To view these itineraries or order printed tourist guides, scan the QR code with your smart phone. Even today, African-American families find it frustrating to try to trace their ancestors back more than a few generations.

That included educational activities, legal assistance, rations, clothing, and medicine as well as helping freedmen settle on confiscated and abandoned lands. African-American Heritage
Saturday, October 13 beginning at 10:00 a.m. National Archives African American Genealogy Subject Specialist Reginald Washington will present. Registration is recommended. Washington lectures frequently on African American genealogy. Over the past 12 years, he has spoken at many conferences, and to numerous local genealogy societies and clubs. Articles he’s written have appeared in genealogical journals and magazines. He served for more than five years as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the National Quarterly Genealogical Quarterly. In October 2000, Reginald Washington gave Congressional testimony in support of The Freedmen's Bureau Preservation Act. This authorized $3 million for the preservation of more than 1,000 linear feet of field office records of the Freedmen's Bureau. The Freedmen's Preservation Project involved staff from a number of NARA units, and included volunteers, students, archivists, archives specialists, archives technicians, conservators, editors, photographers. This five-year year initiative, completed in 2006, resulted in the reproduction of more than one million images of Freedmen's Bureau field office records on more than a thousand rolls of microfilm. The Genealogical Society of Utah has started a project to digitize and index the microfilmed records, and plans to eventually put them on the Internet.
