‘Tis The Season For Giving Back The holidays are a time when families come together. At Thanksgiving, we reflect on all the blessings we have in our lives. Unfortunately, it’s been a rough year for many in our communities and the holidays are a time of anxiety and uncertainty for them. Here’s how you can help a local family – and especially their children – during the holiday season. Shop With A Cop Each year, local area law officers give underprivileged kids a day of mentoring - and some money - to go Christmas shopping for their families and also get mid-year school supplies. It’s a project sponsored by the local Fraternal Order of Police, completely funded through donations, with help from the Optimist Club and other groups. They go bowling at Lord Calvert Bowl, to Outback Steak house lunch, and then they go to the Prince Frederick Walmart, which provides Sgt. Mike Bomgartner discounts. This year Shop with a Cop is Saturday, December 8 according to Sgt. Mike Bomgartner, who says they let the kids play with the sirens and lights in the police vehicles. “It’s a positive message. A lot of these kids come from an attitude that ‘police are bad – they’re not your friends’ and this changes their attitude. They see we care. We mentor them, show them we’re good guys.” Members and staff of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office volunteer along with members of the Maryland State Police, Maryland Natural Resources Police, and other local law enforcement agencies. Bomgartner says a number of officers who live here but work with other law enforcement agencies volunteer as well as firefighters and others. The organizing officers ask local schools to determine which kids need to go, and each year, they get more and more. Last year, 67 children went on Shop with a Cop, and they’d like to do 100, Bomgartner says. They also need volunteers to go along and help the kids shop, and wrap their gifts afterwards at the Prince Frederick Fire Department. “Police work is a male-dominated profession. A lot of them bring their wives and girlfriends to help. But it would be good to have more women go along and work with the girls, help them shop and pick things out,” he adds. In addition to volunteers and monetary donations, Bomgartner says they could use donations of wrapping paper, boxes, bows, gift bags and trimmings. To donate or volunteer for Shop with a Cop, call the Calvert Sheriff’s office non-emergency number at (410) 535-2800, press 0 and ask how you can help. Toys for Tots When times are tough, many families have to focus on food and other basic needs, meaning that for some, the kids may not have a Christmas. This is where Toys for Tots through the local US Marine Corps Reserve steps in to help. Their motto is: “Every Child Deserves a Little Christmas.” And the gift of a shiny, new toy or a book or new clothing – something that most children take for Navy Reservist Jerry Kepich
Com m unity FOCUS
granted – shows a needy child that someone cares, that he or she has not been forgotten, and that Christmas has not passed them by. Last year, approximately 470 children in Calvert County received toys through Toys for Tots. This year, it’s expected that the needs may even be greater. Jerry Kepich of Chesapeake Beach is a Navy Reservist who is instrumental in coordinating local Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Donations of new, unwrapped toys are needed. Items for children from babies through late teens are needed. They do take stuffed animals and also toiletries and clothing. Monetary donations are also accepted. Volunteers are also needed to pick up, sort and inventory toys, along with many other duties. They also rely on local businesses and community groups. The Bay Business Group (BBG) will have Toys for Tots collection boxes at their annual BBG/Pat Carpenter Memorial Christmas Parade in North Beach. The parade begins at noon along the boardwalk. Look for the boxes at the viewing stand and also at the vendor area on 7th Street. Some of the other major drop-off points in our area for Toys for Tots include Roland’s of Chesapeake Station, Sneade’s Ace Home Center, American Legion Posts in Chesapeake Beach and Lusby, and at local Fire Departments. A complete list is on their web site at CalvertToysForTots.org or if you live in Anne Arundel County, go to edgewater-md.toysfortots.org If you’re a business and would like to get a donation box for your group or business, go to either site above and simply fill in the form. They can either deliver the boxes to you or you can pick them up. On Saturday, December 8, the Southern Maryland Mustang Club Toys for Tots Cruise will be held at the American Legion Post 206 from noon until 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 13 is the last day for toy donations. However, late donations can still be dropped off at American Legion in Chesapeake Beach, Sheriff’s Office in Prince Frederick and American Legion in Lusby. Community Thanksgiving For the second year in a row, local ballet school owner and instructor Abigail Francisco is opening her studio for a free Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. It’s sponsored by the Spiritist Society of North Beach and many “friends,” although donations and sponsors are gladly accepted. Singles, families, young and old, it doesn’t matter your income level or status – you are welcome to come. People who Abigail Francisco are unemployed, homeless or otherwise struggling or alone are especially invited to share a day of fellowship and give thanks. It’s a meal of fellowship that is open to everyone in our community. The 2nd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held Thursday, Nov. 22 from noon – 2:00 p.m. at Abigail Francisco School of Classical Ballet, 4110 3rd Street in North Beach. So they know how many people to expect and prepare enough food, they ask anyone who plans to come to please call and RSVP. For more information, call (301) 855 – 0282. Anyone wishing to donate or be a sponsor may also call this number. Holidays 2012 CHESAPEAKE BAY TRIPPER

Ba y Tr ip p e r Day Trip
Two million twinkling lights, an amazing indoor snowfall every night, dancing fountains set to Christmas music are just a few of the incredible things you could enjoy during a short day trip to Gaylord National Harbor. Just off 95/495 set high above the Potomac River overlooking the Wilson Bridge, Gaylord National Resort presents Christmas on the Potomac November 16 through January 6 for the 5th year in a row. You’ll be shocked and awed from the moment you walk in. Unique and festive décor sparkles throughout the entire resort. Look up and be amazed by fifty 150-foot tall light curtains hanging from the ceiling of the 20-story atrium. The Northern Lights will light the atrium nightly from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. Suspended from the center of the atrium is a 60-foot-tall Christmas tree made entirely
Holidays At National Harbor of synthetic “candy” glass. By day, it looks like a spectacular stained-glass window. At night, it glows brilliantly and casts a festive mood throughout the soaring atrium. Every evening at 6:30, there’s a Tree Lighting Ceremony. Following that, there’s the Brightest Star Fountain Show at 6:30 (and again at 9:30 p.m.). Hear a heartwarming narration of the classic Christmas story and then watch as choreographed water "dances" to the music. One of the attractions kids will love is ICE!™ featuring DreamWorks'
Shrek the Halls. It features well-known characters from films such as Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda with Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Gingy and Puss in Boots celebrating Christmas in their own special way. At Shrek the Halls, kids can relive the heartwarming story as you stroll through this amazing attraction featuring their favorite characters. When Shrek tries to plan the "perfect Christmas" for Fiona and the kids, his plans are disrupted by chaos and commotion. But, in the end, Shrek learns the true meaning of the holiday. This attraction

features colorful ice sculptures and incredible 20-feet tall ice slides carved entirely from two million (yes million!) pounds of ice. A band of master carvers spends nearly a month of 12-hour shifts inside a 9-degree freezer, transforming two million pounds of ice into a breathtaking winter wonderland. Sound extreme? It is. And inside the ICE! attraction, they keep it a chilly 9 degrees. So think Christmas morning in Alaska, and dress accordingly! Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. All guests will also be provided calf-length, hooded winter coats to keep them warm. Coats are available in all sizes, including children and infants. Hats and gloves are recommended - and are available for purchase. And even though there are millions of lights in this spectacular display, all are energy-efficient LED bulbs as part of Gaylord National’s on-going commitment to the environment. Operating hours vary on weekdays and weekends, but ICE! at Gaylord National is open daily. Prices range from $10.99 per person for military/off-peak dates to $29.99 per adult in the most popular weekends and times. Call ahead to check on rates and buy tickets for the date you plan to go: (301) 965-4000. At an additional cost, kids can get their photos taken with Santa Monday Friday until 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. They can also take a ride on the “Potomac Express,” which is a winter-themed miniature train.
Enjoy the Festival of Trees Everyone is invited to be part of the 24th Annual Festival of Trees that benefits Burnett Calvert Hospice House. The theme this year is “Joyful Holidays.” It will be held Thanksgiving weekend at Huntingtown High School and features hallway after hallway of beautifully decorated Christmas trees, many honoring loved ones who were cared for by hospice. Calvert Burnett Hospice House is open to anyone in their final days who can no longer live at home. It’s available on a first-come, first serve basis without regard for a person’s ability to pay. This is the major fundraiser of the year for Calvert Hospice, so everyone is encouraged to generously support the Festival of Trees and its wide range of family activities. New this year is a Gingerbread House Competition. Contact Carol Orlando for more information (410) 414-8137. The Festival of Trees Gift Shop features over 70 vendors offering merchandise, art, and unique, hand-made crafts. It’s a lovely place to start your Christmas shopping! Be creative! Ba y T r ip p e r Holiday Gift Guide
Between Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses nationwide. Last year, over one hundred million people came together to Shop Small® in their communities on Small Business Saturday®. This idea, promoted nationwide by American Express, has a goal of getting people to remember their local businesses instead of buying all their holiday gifts at the malls or big chain stores. Small Business Saturday is a day for everyone from the business owners who create jobs to the customers who buy locally - to support small businesses that invigorate the economy and keep communities thriving. It began in 2010 when American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. Now, in its third year, Small Business Saturday will be even bigger. American Express is offering free and easy-to-use tools to help small businesses get the most out of the day and tools for consumers to show their support. As a consumer, you are a key part in helping our small, locally-owned businesses thrive. By shopping or dining at a small business this November 24, you’re showing your support for all the small communities around you. This means you could be helping local entrepreneurs offer more jobs, which in turn invigorate the economy. Bay Tripper Buy Local Gift Ideas! While shopping at local small businesses, also consider shopping at a local art gallery. We are fortunate in our area to have so many gorgeous galleries filled with beautiful items created by our talented local artists. Look for one of a kind art, jewelry and home furnishings to give as gifts. Stop in a local gallery this holiday season. You will be surprised at what you’ll find! Here’s the perfect gift for someone on your list who loves to cook! The Bay
