Barbershop Quartet Warms Up for Valentines Day By Sarah Miller
The quartet Three and a Half Men, made up of Matt Long, Tom Chedester, Greg Stachelczyk and Matt Menard, rehearse in Building B on the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown campus.
Barbershop quartets aren’t something just seen in old movies and musicals. Anybody in Building B of the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) in Leonardtown on Thursday evenings will be treated to the sounds of a men’s chorus ringing through the hallways of the second floor. Southern Maryland Sound, the tri-county chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, has made St. Mary’s County their home for the past 25 years. In addition to the main chorus, there are some quartets who have come to call St. Mary’s County home. Matt Long is one of the youngest people in the group, having been with them for only three years and joining in his freshman year of high school, and one of the four men who make up a sub group of the chorus, the Three and a Half Men Quartet. The other three people in the group are Tom Chedester, who has been in the chorus for five years, Greg Stachelczyk, a seven-year member, and Matt Menard, a 14-year member of the chorus. Chedester said being in the chorus was his wife’s idea, to get him out of the house. “My wife forced me into this and five years later here I am,” he said. The men don’t have to audition to be in the group, and most of them are what they refer to as “ambidextrous singers.” “Just pick one [part] and I’ll pick up what you leave behind,” Greg said. Diane Trautman, the director of the group, is a former music teacher for St. Mary’s County Public Schools who still substitutes as necessary. She’s been the director of Southern Maryland Sound for the past three years. The chorus as a whole tries to have at least one concert per month, according to Ritter, who acts as the schedule keeper for the group. They perform at senior homes, the county fair and the oyster festival, among other locations, Ritter said. They also go caroling at Christmas. The quartets perform during the chorus’s concerts, in addition to independent concerts. In addition to the monthly concerts the whole chorus puts on, Three and a Half Men will be offering special Valentine’s Day concerts. For $40, the quartet can be hired to visit a person’s home or workplace in St. Mary’s County and sing to them. For $20, a person can hire the quartet to call their special someone living outside the county and serenade them over the phone with a rendition of songs such as “Let me Call You Sweet Heart” and “In the Still of the Night.” The quartet will sing anywhere, Chedester said. There was one year when a wife had the quartet go serenade her husband, a gunnery sergeant in the military, when he was at work. “I was so happy to get outta’ there that first year,” Menard said. According to him, it’s a little intimidating to sing to a man who is armed and getting angry. When they went back the next year, the gunnery sergeant’s wife was present and he turned on the public address system to allow the quartet to serenade the whole building. For more information, or to book a concert, contact Ritter at 301-481-8536.
Sweet Treat a Holiday Classic
Valentine’s Day and chocolate seem synonymous, but another confection rules the roost come the day of love. Since 1902, NECCO(R) Sweethearts Conversation Hearts have played a pivotal role on Valentine’s Day. The concept for these sentiment-reading candies came during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. During that time, mottos were all the rage. Other candies were produced with mottos printed on paper rolled up inside of the candy. But until this point there were no candies with the words were printed directly on the confection. In the 1860s, Daniel Chase, the brother of NECCO founder Oliver Chase, began printing sayings directly on candy using experimental methods. Eventually the candy hearts became a coveted Valentine’s Day tradition.
4
Sweethearts(R) have featured different sayings throughout the years, and starting in the 1990’s began higher-tech phrases, such as “Fax Me,” and “E-mail Me.” In 2009, the company asked the American public to tell how they express feelings of affection. The 2010 series of Sweethearts featured customer-provided sayings and bright, bold colors. The candies also were revamped to be softer and more enjoyable to eat. The entire production of Sweethearts is available for a limited time and usually sells out in a matter of weeks. Those who love the candies better act fast to secure their sweets for this season. Valentines & Presidents Day Buying Guide 2011
Host A Fun Valentine’s Day Party For Kids Valentine’s Day is often a time for adult couples to show their affection. But Valentine’s Day is a fun time for kids, too. Kids often enjoy handing out and receiving Valentine’s Day cards, and parents often enjoy seeing their kids’ crushes. Another Valentine’s Day tradition kids enjoy is the annual Valentine’s Day party. Parents hosting the party this year can make the most of their holiday party with the following tips. * Let kids make the invitations. Kids will get a kick out of making Valentine’s Day invitations for all their friends. Tools of the trade include construction paper, glitter, stickers, and any other accessories kids might feel are necessary. Parents who want to go the extra mile can take their kids around the neighborhood to hand deliver the invitations to their friends. * Go big with balloons. No kids party is complete without balloons, and a Valentine’s Day party should include pink, red and white balloons. If time permits, create an archway of balloons at the front door or tie balloons to the mailbox so other parents know where to drop the kids off.
* Don’t forget the candy and cupcakes. Kids might have ulterior motives for enjoying Valentine’s Day that go beyond giving and receiving valentines. Candy and cupcakes are as much a part of Valentine’s Day for kids as they are for adults. Chocolate and cupcakes are favorites for kids and adults alike on Valentine’s Day, so be sure to have some on hand for the party. * Host a few Valentine’s themed games. Instead of standard fare like “Pin the Tail On the Donkey,” spice things up for Valentine’s Day with a few games with a Valentine’s Day theme. If the weather permits, host a Valentine’s scavenger hunt in the backyard. Include prizes like Valentine’s stickers and, of course, chocolate. If the weather is too cold for a scavenger hunt, plan other activities that can be done indoors. This can include some dancing to kids’ favorite music or even letting kids decorate the house themselves with Valentine’s themed decorations they made at the party. * Accessorize. For the party, purchase heart-shaped plates and red, pink or white utensils for the kids to eat with. For dessert, serve up a heart-shaped chocolate cake.

What’s More Memorable Than A Valentine’s Card? How About A Singing Valentine? This the fifth year that Fathers and Sons, a local, traditional barbershop quartet will meander about, serenading sweethearts, both female and male, at workplaces, homes, restaurants, bars or wherever you want on Valentine’s Day. These singing Valentines will be available on February 13 and 14 in throughout Calvert County, and all money raised benefits Calvert Hospice. The cost of a Singing Valentine is $50.00 and all money raised is donated to

over $6,500. Fathers and Sons is made up of Dave Reyno of Owings who sings bass, his son, Jeremy Reyno of Prince Frederick, a tenor, John Leavitt of Owings, a baritone, and his son, Jason, also of Owings who sings lead and carries the tune. The elder Reyno tells the Chesapeake Current how the Singing Valentines work. “We offer four different songs and you have a choice: ‘Let Me Call You Sweetheart,’ ‘Wild Irish Rose,’ ‘Heart of My Heart,’ and ‘I Love You Truly.’ What we do is show up where you tell us and find the Valetine recipient, sing them a couple of songs, give them a red rose and a bag of candies. It’s very sweet.” They present the Singing Valentines wearing the traditional barbershop quartet uniform: red shirts, black pants, and white ties. “We have a lot of scheduling to do and usually get in 20-25 a day,” Reyno explains. “We say Calvert County, but we have been known to go into Southern Anne Arundel County if we can fit it in the schedule. One year we did a Valentine’s party in Deale at the very end of the day. But what we try to do
is the Northern part of the county half of the day and the Southern half the other, otherwise we’d waste all our time in travel. And we’re stretching it into two days so we can raise more money – both the 13th and the 14th. We start at about 9:00 a.m. and finish around 9:00 p.m. both days so it’s a lot of juggling.” One of the most unusual Singing Valentines they ever presented was at the Calvert County Jail in Barstow. “No, it was not for an inmate,” Reyno laughs. “It was for an employ-

ee, and everyone really enjoyed it.” “We’ve had some awkward ones, too,” Reyno says. “Sometimes it’s kinda weird when we’re asked to sing to guys, but we all have a great time.” “We have a gentleman who is a repeat customer and we’re still trying to figure him out. We sing for the people he sends us to and always their happy faces turn to ‘oh, geez’ faces when we tell them he sent us,” Reyno laughs. “But oh, well! It’s all for a good cause.” As for the strangest, Reyno says, “There was one we did for a lady in Dunkirk and it brought tears to her eyes. ‘ How romantic’ she said over and over. Then, we told her who it was from. You should have seen the look on her face – the smile turned to a frown! It obviously wasn’t from the person she wanted - or expected!” Reyno adds, “Most people take the Singing Valentines very well and just love it!” The rest of the year, Fathers and Sons keep busy. Reyno says, “We’ve sung the National Anthem and God Bless America at Camden Yards, and at the beginning of Bowie Bay Sox and Blue Crabs games. We’re also hoping to sing for the Washington Capitals this year.” They also sang recently at a 90th birthday party, and have performed at Asbury Solomons, area senior centers, and Alzheimer wards at nursing facilities and hospitals. “It’s very touching when the folks start remembering the old songs and singing along,” Reyno adds.

How to Have a “Green” Wedding
By Anna Chaney Willman Getting engaged for Valentine’s Day? The next step is planning your wedding. Here are some tips on how you can make your special day more fun, green, and respectful to Mother Earth. First, as you make your list of everything you “need” for your wedding, think, “how can I use less, then-reuse, recycle,
repurpose.” Vintage is always in. A wedding dress is a very personal item; how a bride presents herself on this very important date is not to be taken lightly. It may be tough to re-use someone else’s dress. But, if your theme is green, vintage, and gentle to the Earth this could be a viable concept. Or, the next best thing, consider having someone local make your dress out of other wedding dresses that are being given away or
sold second hand. Menus, beverages, music, attire, decorations, photography, officiate, transportation, travel, invitations, favors, rings, rehearsal; these are just a few of the services and products you will be planning for your wedding celebration. Generally speaking, try to focus on less use and less waste. So, the less travel required of you and the majority of your guests, fewer fossil fuels will be burned and/or wasted. Consider hosting your ceremony and reception in close proximity to the majority of your guests. Second, host the ceremony and reception in the same location to prevent extra travel from one to the other. Hotels are one of the greatest offenders of the environment, mainly due to the thoughtless consumption of large volumes of electricity and water, and the production of large amounts of waste from trash to food waste, without a thought of recycling or composting. Therefore, choose a location that is certified “green” by a third party, is a park or other outdoor venue. Many people are also choosing to host more events at home! When you select your vendors, keep in mind their travel time as well. Use vendors local to the chosen venue. Consider all vendors from caterers to florists who source their products locally when available. If you are hosting your event at home, make lists of the food and beverages that you will be providing for your guests. Ask an event expert to help you trim your list to prevent food and beverage waste. Hire some catering staff to ensure that effective recycling is accomplished as well as com-

posting, if possible. Consider recyclable, Earth-friendly serving ware or rent reusable china, silverware, and glassware from a local vendor. For the ladies and gentlemen attendants, consider attire that they can rent or re-use themselves. Once again, using a local tuxedo rental outfitter is a good idea. And, for the ladies, choose dresses from a local department store that they would actually wear again. Allow each person to choose their own (with certain parameters that you may create, such as length, color, neckline, etc.). Can you imagine how much material would be saved and re-used instead of hanging in a closet for the next 50 years? Or, if you select a traditional bridesmaid dress, hire a local seamstress to make elegant, useful pillows out of these dresses (that will likely never be worn again) and give them back to your bridesmaids as their gifts. Lastly, the traditional wedding invitation is not always tree-friendly. Consider creating a wedding website where you can design a super elegant invitation for all of your guests to visit for the wedding details. Emailing an invitation to visit this beautiful website is appropriate and/or sending out a glam postcard printed on recycled paper with the link to your wedding website will save a few trees, save some money and allow you to creatively design and share your wedding with your friends and family. For more advice on Greening your next event, email Anna at awillman@ herringtononthebay.com.

Falling in Love With Chocolate
The average American eats 11 pounds of chocolate every year, a significant percentage of which is enjoyed around Valentine’s Day. The reason people are known to enjoy and crave chocolate may be connected to its chemical components. Chocolate has been known to affect mood in many ways. It contains 380 known chemicals, triggering a host of responses in the brain. Chocolate can trigger the production of opioids, which are chemicals, such as those found in opium, that produce a feeling of well-being (euphoria). Eating chocolate then may make a person feel better, which is why chocolate is often a turn-to comfort snack. Chocolate also may work like THC, the chemical components in marijuana, extending the feeling of being “high” or well-being. Chocolate can also increase blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, attributing to feelings of alertness. The caffeine in chocolate also acts as a stimulant. However, the reason chocolate may be snatched up come Valentine’s Day is that chocolate appears to contain phenylalanine, the same chemical that is produced by the brain when people fall in love. Doctors think that eating chocolate creates a temporary “love high.” For those gifting chocolate for Valentine’s Day, consider dark chocolate, which is also high in antioxidants. This chocolate is among the healthier varieties in which to indulge.

CalvART Gallery
Prince Frederick Shopping Center 110 Solomons Island Road Prince Frederick, MD 20678 410-535-9252 www.calvartgallery.org During the month of February, Black History Month, CalvART Gallery will highlight guest artist Tim Hinton and his show “The Legends: A Tribute to Historic Black Jockeys.” When we think of horse racing names like Secretariat come up, however few are aware that African-Americans dominated the sport for many years. At the first Kentucky Derby, for example, 13 of the 15 jockeys were black. These jockeys won many races across the country and sadly are often overlooked or forgotten. Tim Hinton has created an artistic tribute to these sports history legends in a series of paintings that powerfully capture nine of these racing greats. These stunning life-like images will help ensure that these jockeys are honored for generations to come. This incredible show will run from February 9 through 27. A special reception at which the artist will be present will be held on Saturday, February 12 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at CalvART Gallery, located in the Prince Frederick Center at Hwy. 4 and Hwy. 231 (110 S. High-Tech Valentines A picture -- or in this case a 3D holographictype image -- can tell a thousand words. Especially “I Love You” come Valentine’s Day and other holidays. The new trend in greeting cards is augmented reality that puts a new interactive twist on the classic paper card. Hallmark is one of the companies exploring the possibilities of augmented reality in their greeting cards. The company recently began offering a line of cards that provided interactive, 3D graphics when the card was placed in front of a computer’s Web cam. Instead of merely reading the Valentine’s Day sentiments, recipients are given an interactive experience that adds quirkiness and individuality to the average greeting card. Hallmark isn’t the only innovator relying on augmented reality for consumers. Individuals doing
clothing shopping or looking to change their hair style may be able to stand in front of a Web cam, use their live image and motion capture technology to select from different clothing styles or hair cuts and “try on” these looks. Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment in which elements are augmented by virtual computergenerated sensory input, such as sound or graphics. Essentially, augmented reality is mixing the real world with computer-simulated virtual reality elements. This technology is expected to grow in popularity in the years to come. For now, Valentine’s Day celebrants can enjoy a piece of augmented reality when they offer greetings of love to the special people in their lives.

Chocolate Facts Chocolate is one of the most popular confections, as both men and women admit to craving. In fact, about 40 percent of women and 15 percent of men report chocolate cravings, according to published studies. Aztec Indians were some of the first people on record to have enjoyed chocolate. Their legends held that cacao seeds were brought from Paradise and that wisdom and power came from eating the fruit of the cacao tree. Due to a spelling error, the cacao beans became know as the “cocoa” beans, probably by travelers who misinterpreted the Aztecs. Cocoa was first consumed as a bitter beverage. It wasn’t until English explorers brought the beans back to Europe and mixed it with sugar and milk that chocolate began to evolve. Today, there are a variety of chocolates for those with a sweet tooth. Unsweetened chocolate: This is pure cocoa that has no sugar added. It is commonly referred to as baking chocolate, and is bitter and not eaten right out of the package. Bittersweet chocolate: While still bitter, bittersweet has some added sugar. Generally high in cocoa solids (up to 75 percent), bittwersweet chocolate contains more cocoa butter than unsweetened varieties. Semisweet chocolate:This chocolate is slight-
ly sweetened during processing. It may contain a little more sugar than bittersweet, but still a high percentage of cocoa solids. Bittersweet and semisweet chocolate are often interchangeable in recipes, but semisweet seems to be the preferred chocolate for bakers. Milk chocolate: This is the sweetest variety of chocolate with the most sugar, milk and least amount of cocoa solids (perhaps 20 percent). Milk chocolate is commonly used for candy bars. It is not good for baking because the milk protein can interfere in the texture of the finished baked product. White chocolate: Some argue that white chocolate isn’t real chocolate. That’s because it is made from sweetened cocoa butter with added vanilla and milk solids, but contains no cocoa solids. However, since it contains cocoa butter, which comes from cocoa beans, it is a chocolate derivative. German chocolate: German chocolate actually has nothing to do with Germany, but with a man named “German” who created the confection. It is a dark chocolate but sweeter than semisweet. Conveture: A high-quality baking chocolate that contains more cocoa butter than regular chocolate. Conveture means “to cover,” and it is often used for coating truff les or in frostings.

Valentine’s Day Proposal Dilemmas
Gear for Fans and Athletes
Valentine’s Day is a popular day for marriage proposals. After all, a day set aside to celebrate friendship and love seems the ideal moment for a couple to begin their new life together. However, individuals may be surprised that other holidays rival Valentine’s Day for a greater share of people popping the question, including Christmas and Thanksgiving. Roughly 2.2 million couples get married in the U.S. every year, according to Census Bureau tracking. But the Diamond Information Center says that only 10 percent of all marriage proposals will take place on Valentine’s Day. There may be a few reasons why couples choose a day other than February 14 to get engaged. * Jewelry costs: Many retailers inflate the prices of merchandise in February because they know Valentine’s Day is a popular time to give gifts. Individuals looking to save money or get a good deal on an engagement ring could find February is a costly time to shop. * Valentine’s Day stigma: There could be the conception that getting engaged on Valentine’s Day is cliche and some couples avoid the day for this very reason. * Lack of surprise: Those looking to make a proposal a surprise could find that doing so on Valentine’s Day is expected and won’t pack the same surprise factor as another day of the year.
WE CARRY A WIDE SELECTION OF SPORTS GEAR: • Cleats • • • •
Mouthguards Batting and Football Gloves Practice Jerseys Baseball Pants and Socks
* Poor level of intimacy: Chances are a couple sharing a romantic dinner on Valentine’s Day will also be sharing it with hundreds of other couples in various restaurants around the neighborhood. If privacy and oneon-one time are desired for the proposal, Valentine’s Day may not be the best time to propose. * Pressure: Valentine’s Day carries with it the pressure to be a perfect day for romance and love. Someone proposing could feel pushed into popping the question on this day simply because it’s Valentine’s Day, rather than ultimately being ready for marriage.
