Eaton Hall Gardens Charity Open Days Sunday 29th August 2021

Introduction Eaton Hall Gardens Charity Open Days are held to raise money for local causes and provide the opportunity for visitors to walk around the formal gardens of the home of the Duke of Westminster. Cheshire Young Carers is very honoured to be invited to be part of the first garden open day for two years due to restrictions with the pandemic. It provided a valuable opportunity to raise funds to support our work with children across Cheshire and just as importantly help us to inform people about young carers and our programmes to support them.

Cheshire Young Carers

Over 40 volunteers directly supported Cheshire Young Carers on the day, which included volunteers from Cheshire Scouts and Cheshire Guides.

C

heshire Young Carers were the nominated charity at the Eaton Hall Charity Garden Open hosted on the Eaton Estate in Cheshire on 29th August 2021 with all proceeds from the day helping to support children who are young carers. It proved a great way to display some of the work of young carers including selling a series of photographs taken by young carers, so congratulations to (names of young carers with pictures on sale) plus the craft work from this year’s summer activity programme.

Here is a snapshot of what we got up to: Garden Trail for Children Our education team created a garden trail centred around the spring walk within the gardens. Children who collected all 26 answers received lollypops.

Family Chapel Our team were on hand to answer questions about the chapel allowing visitors to marvel at the splendour of the stained-glass windows and the architecture.

Scout Ambulance

Carriage Hall

Lovingly created by Gerald Newbrook and with special Royal approval to call the vehicle “Princess Elizabeth”, it proved a real photo opportunity for lots of visitors.

Our team assisted with the flow of visitors around the magnificent carriage hall.

Meet & Greet Our team welcomed visitors to the open day and supported the estate team to quickly process pre-purchased tickets. We then helped people find their way around the Courtyard and gardens.

Volunteer Refreshments

Rolls Royce Tank

it’s really important to look after our volunteers so we had a dedicated team serving refreshments throughout the day.

The Scout Ambulance was in the company of another special vehicle, also a replica of a vehicle that served in the Great War. This was a lightly armoured Rolls-Royce motor car, actually a Silver Ghost, the original served in the desert with the 2nd Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor. Equipped with machine guns they were able to rush in and surprise the enemy.

Information Point

Courtyard Café

Eaton Train

One of our most popular attractions with some determined customers chasing the prizes they wanted.

This provided a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about the 40,000 young carers in Cheshire and the support available to them.

This became a focal point for many visitors who enjoyed our hospitality with tea, coffee, pop, water, cake and biscuits served throughout the day.

Our team helped to coordinate the regular departure schedule for the fully booked train rides. Many people were impressed with the length of the ride and we even managed some “dog sitting” for train customers.

Animals Gone Wild! Two summers ago, as part of our holiday respite programme young carers were involved in a large artwork activity creating three very large animals. We allowed them to roam wild around the estate – it’s a good job they are friendly animals!

Thank You Thank you to all the staff from the Grosvenor Estate who arranged the day and our staff team and volunteers for helping to make the day so successful. These are private gardens not usually open to the public, so it has been a real privilege to be part of this special day.

Cheshire Young Carers In Cheshire there are estimated to be nearly 40,000 children who are young carers. In North Wales there are estimated to be 20,000 children who are young carers. At Cheshire Young Carers we work to give these children some of their childhood back, we support families, and we work with schools to better support young carers.

School Support Package This programme of work helps schools to identify children who are young carers, provides an assessment of the impact of their caring role on potential educational outcomes and provides “low cost” support strategies for young carers.

YAC Programme (Teenagers) Cheshire Scouts Our team helped on the entrance gates, provided refreshments for all the volunteers, supplied the café area and we even had our historic ambulance on show. These are private gardens not usually open to the public, so it has been a real privilege to be part of this special day.

Cheshire Guides Supported Cheshire Young Carers at the Eaton Hall Charity Garden Open hosted on Grosvenor’s Eaton Estate in Cheshire with all proceeds from the day helping to support children who are young carers. Our team ran the very popular café area serving drinks and cakes to visitors. These are private gardens not usually open to the public, so it has been a real privilege to be part of this special day.

The young adult carers (YAC) programme is designed for our teenager young carers and is designed to provide stimulating activities that they design themselves, to create likeminded friendship groups and to improve independence amongst this age group.

Regular Drop in Sessions These sessions operate in centres across Cheshire on a bi-weekly basis. They are designed to offer young carers engaging activities that are fun and to crucially help break down isolation amongst young carers.

School Holiday Programmes These programmes have been designed to overcome a key period of stress for young carers when they can be expected to provide 24/7 support. Our focus on this area is a direct result of feedback from young carers. We now offer activity programmes during every school holiday period with a variety of activities based around Cheshire.

One to One Support Packages We support a small number of families in this programme that allows us to support some of the most vulnerable young carers in Cheshire.
