+ E D I TO R’S L ET T E R
A YEAR OF PETS LAST FALL MARKED THE BEGINNING OF CHESTER COUNTY PET. WE BEGAN our magazine with the intention of spreading information, sharing stories, and forming a tighter pet community. We knew it was important to ensure local pet parents learned from each other’s experiences and the great minds of local experts. From the very first interview last fall to our interviews in this edition, we have learned a lot and the wealth of knowledge has still barely been explored. Since our first story last year, we have been inspired by those in Chester County seeking to educate, innovate, and act on behalf of animals. In our fall 2016 edition, we explored the Brandywine Valley SPCA, an open-admission, no-kill shelter. We also spoke to a horseback riding instructor, Phoenix Animal Rescue, and Aardvark Animal Hospital. We thought our first set of contributors would be hard to top, but we quickly learned there are numerous, equally beneficial sources in the area. They form the web that makes Chester County the pet-friendly place we know and love. For this fifth edition of CCP we had the pleasure of interacting with a variety of knowledgeable people in the county. Our main feature on FIV+ cats has plenty of valuable information from a local expert as well as the heartwarming personal experiences of a pet parent. The secondary feature on Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Association shows how exemplary volunteers are preserving a muchneeded landscape in Chester County on behalf of people and animals. Beyond our features, we proceeded with our tradition of promoting worthy causes by speaking with All 4 Paws Rescue, an all breed rescue that provides second chances without discrimination. Additionally, businesses in the area who help us continue our mission and provide customers with top quality services and products are highlighted. We want to express our gratitude by saying thank you to all of our readers, advertisers, and information sources. We couldn’t do what we do without you, and we are grateful for everything you have done for us over the last year. We have met so many people and their cherished pets through our journey, and we cannot wait to continue this adventure with all of you moving forward. Please do not hesitate to email us with your remarkable stories, connect us with your favorite businesses, and learn beside us as we look forward to another year. Thank you and enjoy your Fall 2017 edition of Chester County Pet.

TipS to Tails
DID YOU KNOW? The first veterinary college was founded in 1761 in Lyon, France, by Claude Bourgelat. The Frenchman’s interest in horses expanded from proper riding technique to how to medically treat and perform surgery on the horses and livestock of regional farms. (avma.com)
Quick Facts About Pets
GET ALONG SWIMMINGLY Never place two male bettas together in the same aquarium or tank. One might turn on the other and kill it. This rule goes for two females as well. Potential friendly tank mates include: tetra fish, African dwarf frogs and glass catfish. Be sure to monitor interactions between the betta and other fish or creatures you introduce into the tank. (petmd.com)
Mobile pet grooming is on the rise. A groomer travels to your home onboard a specially-equipped, climate-controlled van, which usually includes a generator, a tank of clean water, another tank for dirty water, and tools for trimming and grooming your furry friend. Your pup will emerge with tamed fur, clipped nails, and maybe a special bow between her ears!
Ever feel like your cat is staring at you? In a stare-off, your cat would probably win. Felines have three eyelids: the two upper and lower lids that they have in common with humans, and a third one, a very thin, almost transparent lid called the nictitating membrane. This lid moves quickly in a diagonal direction starting from the inside corner of the eye and protects the delicate organ from debris. Since the upper and lower lids rarely meet, your cat might look as if she’s ‘squinting’, as the nictitating membrane moves rapidly back and forth across her eye. Ready, set, stare! FIV+ CATS Coping with and seeing the beauty beyond this feline virus written by Samantha St.Clair photographed by Samantha St.Clair
“When I applied to adopt a cat from Cat Angel Network, I was informed that the cat I was interested in was not a good fit for my home. However, there was another cat for me. Her name was Ariel. There was just one thing: she was FIV positive.” Alma’s account of her adoption process is not uncommon. Many people fall in love with FIV+ cats, and just like Alma, they often don’t know what it is and are uncertain moving forward. It’s a virus, that much is apparent. It sounds intimidating, too. But what truly lies behind that seemingly scary diagnosis?
+ THE BARN
WHAT IS FIV? “FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and is a retroviral disease that results in a progressive suppression of the immune system. It is a lifelong condition that varies in severity on a case by case basis,” Dr. Rachel Stadler with the Chester County Cat Hospital explained. “Due to their suppressed immune systems, cats with FIV are more susceptible to disease.” Kept indoors, their chances of acquiring illnesses are vastly minimized.
“It is important to decide if you can provide an appropriate environment and care for an FIV+ cat,” Dr. Stadler explained.
There are misconceptions on the spread of the disease and its relation to humans. “This disease is species-specific to cats,” Dr. Stadler said. “This means that only cats can get FIV, not you or your nonfeline pets.” Cats are most commonly exposed to the virus through fights with infected cats by receiving a penetrating bite wound. This makes it rare for an indoor cat to obtain FIV. A routine blood test for newly acquired felines upon their first vet checkup will determine if a cat is infected. We sometimes assume the worst when our pets receive an unexpected diagnosis. However, while FIV is certainly a cause for concern, it is not a death sentence for your current or potential cat. It is a very slowly progressive virus that is manageable with proper veterinary care and lifestyle choices. “Because they have a higher risk of developing infections and other chronic conditions, regular veterinary visits are even more important for FIV+ cats,” Dr. Stadler said. It is also more important to take them to their vet at the first sign of illness or behavior changes. Due to cats responding differently to the condition, the necessary medical care will vary from cat to cat. Working alongside your veterinarian, you will be able to determine a good regimen for your feline friend.
ADOPTING FIV+ CATS One of the most devastating side effects of a cat having FIV is not its potential health problems, but its lowered chance of finding a forever family. When people see or hear of the diagnosis, they often move on to another cat, afraid of what living with an FIV+ cat would entail. The reality is, they make excellent pets when
10 CHESTER COUNTY PET
people see beyond the stigma of FIV as long as you realize their unique needs. “It is important to decide if you can provide an appropriate environment and care for an FIV+ cat,” Dr. Stadler explained. “You must also consider other feline members of your family. If they are not FIV+, there is a risk of infection when bringing an FIV+ cat into your home. If there is no fighting between the cats and good hygiene practices are in place, the chances of spreading the virus are small, but it is a concern that needs to be discussed and addressed.” FIV cannot be spread through casual contact such as playing, licking, and sharing a water bowl.
ARIEL
A HAPPY ENDING So what came of Alma and Ariel? “People continued to ignore Ariel due to her diagnosis,” Alma explained. “She was adopted once and returned to the rescue after only a week. I connected with her and her story and knew she deserved another chance, so I looked beyond her FIV.” “When I brought her home, that she was FIV+ was always on my mind. However, I quickly grew to realize that she was no different than the cats I had owned in the past. FIV+ cats are labeled as “Special Needs”, but the only part of that I find true is that they are special.” Ariel became queen of the house and a valued family member. “She loves to play, and I find it funny that she also enjoys bossing my husband, George, around.” Alma smiled. “The fact that she has a compromised immune system is now in the back of my mind. I know it is there, but I don’t let it bother me like it used to.”
The key to having an FIV+ cat live peacefully among other friendly, social cats in your home is a slow introduction to avoid serious fights. If you can provide an indoor-only home, regular vet checkups, and are ready to keep an eye on your feline friend for any health or behavior changes, an FIV diagnosis should not deter you from considering adding one of these special cats to your family. “FIV positive cats need homes too,” Dr. Stadler said. “Put an educated foot forward when it comes to adoption and consider all possibilities. With proper care, FIV+ cats can live long and rewarding lives with their owners.”
For those on the fence about adopting an FIV+ cat or any pet with special needs, Alma has some wise advice. “I decided I didn’t know what was going to come around the corner for any cat I adopted. You can adopt a healthy animal and lose it young, and you can bring an FIV+ cat home and have them live a long, happy life. You just never know what will happen so you bring them home and you love them to death, no matter their health concerns.”
If you have faced a recent diagnosis that your cat is FIV+, are considering adopting an FIV+ feline, or simply want to learn more about this often misunderstood ailment, visit catangel.org or contact Chester County Cat Hospital (cccathospital.com) or your veterinarian for more information. There is no cure for FIV, but with proper management, an open mind, and a caring heart, FIV+ cats can go on to live fulfilling lives purring beside you.

Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Grounds The venue for people, pets, and fun festivities written by Samantha St.Clair photographed by Samantha St.Clair
very year the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show & Country Fair attracts thousands of visitors over Labor Day weekend. Upwards of 15,000 people join in on the traditional 3-day festivities that include competitive horse shows, a country fair with rides, a pet parade, various animal exhibits, concessions, vendors, and so much more. The beloved event will be celebrating its 74th year this September.
E
This Chester County tradition has grown tremendously since its first show, where only 88 horses were entered in the competitions. The number increased to 615 in 2010 and remains a very busy, well-received show that has attracted some of the same riders for the last 50 years. Due to its high quality, fun, and exciting atmosphere, it remains one of the longest running shows in the area. What makes the venue even more remarkable is that it is a non-profit organization run almost entirely by dedicated volunteers, making it a true community effort. While the LCHS grounds are well known for the Labor Day weekend festivities, it is important to note that the venue provides for the community year round. Other events at the show grounds include more horse shows, dog shows, and rentals for family or corporate gatherings. Additionally, the 33acre plot of land is a constant community feature. “The venue provides open space that allows for a habitat for wild animals, dog walking, community events and kite-flying in the heart of an increasingly suburban area of Chester County,” Sarah Reese, Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Association Board President said. The location is a breath of fresh air and a place for new and upcoming ventures to debut.
Woof & Hoof Music Festival Brand new to the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show grounds is the Woof & Hoof Music Festival, premiering on September 16th. Woof & Hoof is a cooperative venture between Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show Association and Lulu’s Rescue, both of which will receive financial support from the proceeds of the music festival. The Songwriter’s Conspiracy, founded by Denis Sadler, will be presenting the event by gathering high-quality musicians for a full day of music to support the two local non-profit animal organizations. By attending this event or donating to either cause, you are supporting organizations that promote a better
community for all. Lulu’s Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to spay/neuter efforts, educating the public, and saving dogs of all breeds. LCHSA is also a non-profit organization, dedicated to preserving the rich equine history of Chester County while also maintaining a natural landscape and event space. “I do these concerts for worthy causes and I also happen to be an animal lover,” Denis said. “The whole event came together by sheer perfect timing. I was in the desert in Southern California and became friends with Victoria Williams’ twin dogs, Robedeaux and Beauregard. Upon returning home I ran into a woman associated with Lulu’s Rescue. She mentioned they were looking to do a fundraiser. I was looking for a good reason for a concert. That’s when it all came together. Victoria Williams rarely performs on the East coast because of her health, but she will be traveling here and performing purely for fundraising efforts and her love for animals.” Denis works with young and underrepresented musicians, as well as established, successful acts through his organization, The Songwriter’s Conspiracy. “My organization is all about sustaining young musicians and giving them access to the industry. I know the lineup for Woof & Hoof will blow people away because I try to facilitate artists who are remarkably talented. My goal with this event is to ensure people have the best music experience of their lives.” The lineup of musicians includes animal lovers looking to support noble causes. “I want there to be a theme throughout the concert about animals and I am hoping to get a finale together at the end about them. The plan is to make it as animal centric as possible to appeal to the animal lovers in the crowd.” Aside from amazing music, you can find vendors, Lulu’s Rescue adoptable dogs, and plenty of fun and excitement in the form of good food and entertainment. There will be a special, free kids show at 10:30 am. Doors open at 10:00 am.

+ S E A S O NA L
FALL As fall is coming there are things we need to remember to keep our pets safe. HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS Halloween can be the spookiest night of the year, but keeping your pets safe doesn’t have to be tricky. The ASPCA recommends taking these simple, common sense precautions to keep your pet happy and healthy.
Fall is apple season and although apples are okay for pets to eat there is cyanide in the seeds and this is not safe for animals to ingest. If you have an apple tree, be sure to pick up the apples from the ground so that pets don’t have access to eating the apples with the seeds.
Another concern is peach pits, which are also toxic to animals and should not be left on the ground for pets to eat the peaches with the pits.
Halloween is a fun holiday for the family; however, chocolate is toxic to dogs. Dark chocolate and bakers chocolate are the most toxic. Remember to put Halloween candy out of reach of dogs. If your dog ingests chocolate, contact your veterinarian or go immediately to an emergency facility.
1) Stash the Treats The candy bowl is for trick-or-treaters, not Scruffy or Fluffy. Several popular Halloween treats are toxic to pets. 2) Watch the Decorations and Keep Wires Out of Reach While a carved jack-o-lantern certainly is festive, pets can easily knock over a lit pumpkin and start a fire. 3) Be Careful with Costumes If you do dress up your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not limit his or her movement, sight or ability to breathe, bark or meow. 4) Keep Pets Calm and Easily Identifiable Halloween brings a flurry of activity with visitors arriving at the door, and too many strangers can often be scary and stressful for pets. (ASPCA)
Always remember that grapes and especially raisins are toxic to dogs. Even a few raisins can cause damage to a dog’s kidneys. Consult your veterinarian if your dog eats grapes or raisins. Lastly, owners should not stop flea, tick and heartworm medications during the fall & winter months. It can take up to 3 weeks of below freezing temperatures to kill fleas and ticks and they survive in your home through the winter. Medications also work better when they are given consistently on a monthly basis. Courtesy of Dr. Corinne A. Thomas AARDVARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL | 610.269.2226
16 CHESTER COUNTY PET
TICK SEASON IS UPON US, and it’s appearing to be a real problem. Scientists predict 2017 will bear the highest number of ticks in recent years, with a jump in reported cases of tick-borne illnesses in some regions of the U.S. So, if you are going to be outside to enjoy the cooler weather with your pet, always check for ticks. Ticks have a way of burrowing deep into your pet's fur in an attempt to hide out and feed for as long as possible. Protect your pet by taking the time to do a thorough tick inspection every time you come back from the outdoors.
+ MEET THE BREED
Golden Retriever A loving and devoted family breed
GOLDEN RETRIEVERS HAVE BEEN IN THE spotlight when it comes to heroic efforts, dedicated work ethics, and consistent devotion. They are service animals, they were heroes on 9/11 when they contributed to search efforts, and they provide therapy to countless individuals. Even when these retrievers are “just” pets, they keep their families smiling. They are known for being funny, cuddly, and endearing. While goldens are consistently in the top 10 most popular dog breeds due to these various reasons, there are many aspects of owning them to keep in mind if you want a perfect fit for your family. Goldens are well known for loving everyone and everything. Gregarious, this breed is great with kids, strangers, and social gatherings. They will make fast friends with anyone who will throw their ball or give them a belly rub. Along with their incredible love for people, goldens are highly intelligent and easy to train. These attributes make them successful in activities from agility, to dock diving, service work, and flyball. Anything you want to do with them, they will be glad to follow along. Due to their high intelligence and energy, they need an active family to keep them busy so they stay out of trouble. A tired dog is a happy and well-balanced companion, so you should be prepared to meet their zealous demands, especially during the first 4-5 years of their life. Some other key points to keep in mind are their health and maintenance. The breed suffers from hip dysplasia, allergies, and an above average percentage of cancer cases. Working alongside your veterinarian to keep them healthy, they do have a relatively long lifespan averaging around 12 years. Grooming needs are something to acknowledge, as they are heavy shedders that require frequent brushing. Additionally, while they can thrive in apartments when given proper exercise, they are larger dogs that need adequate space. There is a reason people with golden retrievers have the breed generation after generation. Few breeds have the same loyalty, devotion, and ease of training. They are a great family pet for first-time or experienced pet parents, provided they are given the love, attention, and exercise they need. If you can provide your golden with their few needs, you can expect a companion that will never leave your side, no matter the adventures you go on.

CCP: What was the inspiration behind
CCP: What are the benefits of this
Kitty Cabinets? KC: We had a customer who wanted us to build a cabinet to store dog food in, which led us to the idea of furniture for cats. We always do our best to appeal to our customers and will continue to develop products based on what pet parents desire.
product for cats? KC: Interestingly enough, veterinarians claim litter boxes should be in open spaces, not confined areas such as bathrooms. We started to look at that and think about why people do that. It came down to people just don’t want to see them, and they feel odor is a problem. With our cabinets, pet lovers can make their cats’ lives better by allowing them to access their litter box in an open environment.
CCP: Aside from being visually appealing, what makes Kitty Cabinets better than traditional litter boxes? KC: A big attraction is how simple the litter box is to clean. In one of our options, we have a litter confinement system which is designed for litter to fall back into the pan when it would have been kicked out. Additionally, our cabinets are usable table space. This is an often missed, but great feature of our product, especially for apartments where people need to make the most of their space.

CCP: What makes this product different from similar items on the market?

+ RESCUE HIGHLIGHT
All 4 Paws Rescue People standing together for pets in need written by Samantha St.Clair photographed by Samantha St.Clair
A STRONG COMMUNITY IS WHAT MAKES RESCUES WORK, which is something All 4 Paws Rescue in Chester Springs knows well. Due to the efforts of volunteers, foster homes, and followers, the rescue has saved over 7,000 animals since its inception in 2009. The organization is proof that when we stand together, great achievements can be made to beneďŹ t the animals in our society.
20 CHESTER COUNTY PET
+ RESCUE HIGHLIGHT
LL 4 PAWS is an all breed rescue that accepts anything no matter its size, color, or age. Canines include purebreds and mixed breed family pets that get lost in the network of shelters and animal holding facilities. They are often on death row with limited time to find a guardian when the rescue steps up. With pure dedication, All 4 Paws spends countless hours finding and saving as many of these innocent souls as they can, even those with medical problems.
A
“We are fortunate enough to have a large following that helps us with anything from raising money for injured or sick animals, to fostering and spreading awareness about adoptable pets,” Amy Gindhart, Adoptions Manager and Foster Coordinator of All 4 Paws commented. Their backers consist of over 68,000 Facebook followers, 400 volunteers, and 150 foster families. “We couldn’t do what we do without the love and support of these people, and we are very grateful for what we can achieve thanks to them.” All 4 Paws sets an excellent example of how like minded people can come together and make huge differences. If you’re wondering how to help, there are many ways to make changes. Sharing social media posts and volunteering at events are simpler ways to assist a great cause. However, for those looking to do more, the rescue relies on foster homes. “Being a foster based rescue, all of our dogs need a place to reside while they wait for their forever homes,” Amy explained. “You do not have to be a long time dog owner to be a good foster family. We actually recommend that people foster if they are unsure of what they are looking for in their future pet. It’s a great way to get a feel for what works in your home and with your family. There also isn’t the significant responsibility of owning the dog, as we cover medical expenses and are able to provide the
necessary supplies.” Dogs with All 4 Paws are often adopted quickly, which means foster families don’t have to have a dog at all times of the year. If you fall in love with your foster, adoption is always an option. When it comes to adopting from All 4 Paws, they do their best to keep the process straight-forward and without a multitude of restrictions. Instead, they work with potential adopters individually to determine the best fit for them and the dogs. “We know that certain requirements, such as fences or minimum ages for children in the home, keep responsible and loving families from adopting pets. We’d rather find an adopter with wonderful personal and vet references
who has a plan rather than sticking to broad requirements.” Every adopter is invited to join All 4 Paws’ online discussion group to stay connected with other adopters. No matter how you become part of their growing community, whether following them on social media or bringing one of their dogs into your home, you can rest assured you are joining a cause that puts dogs first.
Due to All 4 Paws’ all breed policy, there is a good chance a dog for your family is waiting to be adopted. For more information on how you can volunteer, foster, or adopt, visit all4pawsrescue.com

How To Hire a Dog Trainer When hiring a dog trainer for your canine companion, it’s best to do your homework. There are no state or federal licensing requirements to be a dog trainer, so it’s buyer beware. Of course, hands-on experience is important. As important is a trainer’s knowledge and application of canine behavior and training theory. Modern trainers know how to use positive reinforcement and appropriate—not abusive—corrections. The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers is an independent agency that tests a trainer’s knowledge. Some entities selfcertify a trainer’s qualifications. If I were hiring a dog trainer, I would check not only certifications, but also their real experience training dogs and whether or not they use positive methods. References should also be available. Some trainers will even let you watch a class before you decide to attend. Also, good trainers are able to adapt a training program to your specific dog. There is no “one size fits all” dog training for every canine. Happy training! Reason to Adopt a Pet.... Animal shelters and rescue groups are brimming with happy, healthy pets just waiting for someone to take them home. Most shelter pets wound up there because of a human problem like a move or a divorce, not because the animals did anything wrong. Many are already housetrained and used to living with families. (humanesociety.org)
