SECTION OF UMBRELLA 1:5
The object I chose is the umbrella as, a quintessential example of the skin an bone system. Drawing this object out required the use of a measuringtape and rope to measure the curves on the object. Due to the geometric and symmetrical elements of the object, the object could be efficiently drawn out using the measurements taken.
3
Analysis
The skeleton of the umbrella is structured geometrically and consists of steel members which extend outwards to give the umbrella its shape
4
When in rest the members are bended together with a spring providing resistance against any movement of the of the members
When extending out the members and the spring start to straigthen out to form a singular line. The members are connected by bolts placed into gaps into the elements.
When fully extended the spring is locked into place into a member and is thus able to hold the entire structure. Pressing against the membrane, it gives the umbrella its shape.

Sketch Model
The sketch model consists of flexible steel wires joined together in the middle. At both ends, the wires are arranged in a paticular manner to try to represent order and chaos respectively. This model was created in order to try and explore the versatility of the structure of a skin and bone system. I explored how it can be used to produce an object with an ordered sequence and how it can also be used to create an object which had a chaotic and seemingly random sequences.
8
Wire mesh is bonded together with celotape. The bottom half of the model is given a messy and chaotic bending . While the top half is bended at similar lengths, angles and is given a structured sequence.

Sketch Design #1 Covered/Revolving/Intimate Space/Eye Contact What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
Inspired by the way umbrellas and fans open, this second skin can be retracted and extended. When closed it restricts visibility for the user and also obscures the user from others. The membrane also enxtends down to the shoulders and protects it.
How does this respond to your personal space? Sommer’s article on personal space relates that eye contact and physical touch is a big part of personal space. This concept uses a model that can create a intimate space for the user to avoid the gaze of others.

Sketch Design #2 Gentle/Bubble/Retracting What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
Like a helmet, this concept has a retractable membrance which acts like a bubble around the head and the shoulders. Can be used for leisure and rest actvities due to its gentle desgin. Secondary skin on shoulder Like a pauldron
How does this respond to your personal space? This second skin is designed to to not look aggressive and somewhat inviting for others however it stil has a membrane to keep unwanted guests at a distance.

Sketch Design #3 Geometric/Intimidating/Cold What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
A series of straight elements interlocked together to form a geometric ‘exoskeleton’ around the head and extends down to the shoulder. At certain points, a membrane will cover an opening in order to obscure the view of the user.
How does this respond to your personal space? The idea is to create a model in the form of an ‘exoskeleton’ to completely cover and surround the user. It creates a barrier from others and gives a cold, intimidating look.

Seminar Workshop
The model my group undertook during the workshop showed me that the skin and bone system could produce very outrageos designs but can still be supported as the system makes use interconnections and tension to stabalise and support the structure.
