The Museum was founded as the Haliburton Highlands Pioneer Museum in 1967, as a Canadian Centennial project to commemorate the early settlers of the area.
The Haliburton Highlands Museum was established in 1967 with a mandate to preserve and celebrate the history of Haliburton Village and Dysart Township,” explains museum director Kate Butler. “While the museum covers all of Haliburton’s history, we focus largely on the first one hundred years—its formative period.”
Over the years, the museum has grown substantially from a single Victorian home to a complex of buildings. The museum’s main building houses exhibits related to native peoples, early settlers, the lumbering era, and the later rise of tourism. Throughout, hundreds of rare artifacts are on display.
“One of our most popular artifacts greets people as they enter— our taxidermied Sidehill Gouger,” Butler says playfully.
Never heard of a gouger? They’re very rare, so it’s not surprising. The gouger is a species of wild goat adapted to hillside living. The legs on one side of their bodies are shorter than those on the opposite side, allowing them to walk and graze sideways on steep slopes. But this peculiar adaptation means that they can only walk in one direction around the hill; if forced to walk in the other direction, a gouger would topple over.
Or so goes the tall tale, a product of local folklore.
Don’t miss the opportunity to stroll down a quiet country lane behind the exhibit building and explore a collection of heritage structures moved from elsewhere in the township. Begin with a recreated settler homestead depicting the modest and often harsh existence faced by settlers in early Haliburton. The farmstead consists of an 1870s log cabin and log barn which contains the tools a farmer used to try to attempt to transform the imposing forests and rocky soil into fields of crops. There’s also a blacksmith shop where a craftsman would have pounded glowing metal into shape.
With farmstead captures that era before the railway arrived in 1878 and reflects the kind of life a family of modest means settling in Haliburton would have had.
And then there is the beautiful Victorian-era Reid House, the first home of the museum, which Butler refers to now as the museum’s largest artifact.
Fifty-year old wheelwright John Russell Reid arrived in Haliburton in 1871, as part of the first wave of settlement. Accompanyi ng him were his wife, Amy, and their 19-year old son, John Russell Jr. They built a modest cabin and a workshop in what was then l ittle more than a hamlet. Life in Haliburton in those days was hardscrabble and it proved too much for the elder Reids, who moved back to England less than a decade later. John Russell Jr. remained and became a wagon-maker and woodworker. In 1882, he built a comfortable home to replace the log cabin.
Today, the home looks much as it would have when the Reids lived there. Staff members lead tours through the building, pointing out period furnishings and artifacts—including a number belonging to the Reid family—that help bring Haliburton’s Victorian-era back to life. Museum programming includes summer activities for kids, historic walking tours, boat tours and the occasional play by local theatre troupe, Rural Rogues.
Though it preserves the history of Dysart Township, the Haliburton Highlands Museum is very much a part of the community’s present – and its future.

Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest

There’s a craft brewery revolution sweeping Ontario. See – and sample – for yourself, the best of this revolution at the Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest. “There are about 250 microbreweries in Ontario, and the beauty of our event is that people have the opportunity to taste the creations of a number of these breweries in one location on one exciting day,” explains Gary Matthews, one of the event’s founding organizers.
About a dozen craft brewery representatives from across Ontario will gather in picturesque Head Lake Park, in Haliburton Village, for the family-friendly event. Included in the July 18th fest are two award-winning Haliburton beer producers, Boshkung Brewery and Haliburton Highlands Brewery.
A $20 passport grants all-day access to the festival and will get you four, four-ounce complimentary sample drinks from the participating breweries of your choice (a ‘dry passport’ entrance, without the drinks, is $5). Additional drinks (beer, cider and various coolers) can be purchased. The passport lets you come and go as you please throughout the day, allowing you the opportunity to explore the area – there’s a 6 km trail around Head Lake, a children’s playground in the village, and the Haliburton Sculpture Forest in nearby Glebe park – before returning to the fest when thirst demands.
Every hour, the bar-stage features representatives of participating breweries to talk about their products, including what foods best accompany particular beers, and how to incorporate craft beer into cooking.
While beer is the focus, there’s more to the Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest: more than two-dozen cottage country vendors, live music to stir up the festival vibe, food, and entertainment for children.
Organized by the Lions Club, all proceeds of the Haliburton Craft Brewers Fest go to worthy local causes, like providing guide dogs for those who are vision impaired and summer camps for under-privileged children. IIS
Date: July 18, 2020, 11 am to 9 pm Location: Head Lake Park, Haliburton Cost: $20 for drink tokens, $5 for non-drinkers age 13+ and free for youth 12 and under www.haliburtoncraftbrewersfest.com

Sandbanks Provincial Park boasts what is almost certainly the finest beach anywhere on Lake Ontario, with kilometres of clear, shallow water and spectacular dunes that are unique in the province.
But the beauty we appreciate today was largely the result of tragic mismanagement of the land in the 19th century, according to John Brebner, a member of Friends of Sandbanks Provincial Park. “The early settlers cleared the area of white pine for ships’ masts, and cedar for construction and fencing. During the socalled Barley Days, when every piece of land was transformed into barley fields for American beer makers, farmers finished off the clearing of the dunes by allowing cows to graze there. The resulting removal of all the vegetation allowed the sand to start drifting, and drift it did, covering houses, lodges and farmers’ fields,” says Brebner.
Starting in 1922, the government began earnest conservation efforts to stabilize the dunes and restore a healthy ecosystem, mostly through large-scale tree planting. The effort was a success, paving the way for a provincial park that’s every bit as busy as Wasaga Beach on hot summer weekends.
Sandbanks has three spectacular beaches of golden sand – Outlet Beach, Sandbanks Beach and Dunes Beach – each one more inviting than the last for lazing on a blanket, building sandcastles and playing in the water. Outlet and Sandbanks beaches are especially ideal for young ones as the water is shallow before it gently drops off. Kayaks and canoes are available to rent for those who want something a bit more adventurous. However you choose to enjoy it, the water is sparkling clean and refreshingly cool.
Beyond the beaches, Sandbanks Provincial Park has much to commend it. Explore any of a number of hiking trails, including the new Lakeview Trail that traces a rocky point that juts out into Lake Ontario, and the interpretive Cedar Sands Nature Trail, a two-kilometre loop along the shores of the Outlet River with two lookouts providing scenic views of the marsh. >
Just one kilometre north of Dunes and Lakeshore Beaches, families set up to enjoy a relaxing summer day. Photo by John A. Brebner.
The most popular is Sandbanks Dunes Trail, a 2.5 km loop around a unique and fragile dune habitat and along the edge of several pannes, rare wetlands that supports wildlife and unusual flora.
While exploring at West Point you might stumble upon foundations, weathered tennis and shuffleboard courts, and the remains of a dance floor. These historic relics remind us of one of the more fascinating, yet little-known aspects of Sandbanks Provincial Park: the rich history of Lakeshore Lodge.
Built as a rustic hotel for summer tourists around 1870, by the 1890s Lakeshore Lodge had grown into an elegant three-storey structure with a recreational hall, dance pavilion, swimming pool, and tennis and shuffleboard courts. It was considered the height of vacationing in Ontario. Sadly, it later became derelict and burned to the ground in 1983. But you can relive the golden age of the resort during Lakeshore Lodge Days (July 22 and Aug 12, 2020, 12-4 pm), an interactive event hosted by Friends of Sandbanks Provincial Park.
Sandbanks hosts other special events including noncompetitive sandcastle building at Sandfest (July 15, 2020) and Sandbanks Music Festival (Sept. 12, 2020, 1- 10pm) at the Park Amphitheatre. Throughout the summer, park staff offer a variety of fun, interactive educational programs including children’s activities, guided hikes led by Park Naturalists, evening campfires with slide shows, and more.
An iconic stretch of Prince Edward County shoreline, the striking, golden dunes and sandy beaches at Sandbanks Provincial Park have been a symbol of summer recreation for more than a century. IIS The Lakeshore Lodge began life about 1870 as the Lakeshore House, erected by local farmer Lewis Mastin.
