STAYING SAFE ON THE WATER TIPS FOR BOATING IN COTTAGE COUNTRY

GENERAL OPERATIONS OF A PASSENGER BOAT As the lakes fill up with cottage goers and seasonal boaters it’s important to understand the ways of the water and the appropriate safety tips to execute each time your boat leaves the dock. That’s why we want to share some basic safety tips to help maximize your summer vacation. After all, boating is one of Muskoka resident’s favorite pastimes. 1.

SAFETY FIRST Follow a pre-departure checklist. From compliance with fire safety regulations to making sure your pleasure craft is fully fuelled, following a pre-departure checklist will help ensure your safety, as well as the safety of your passengers and boaters when you’re on the water.

2. BE WEATHER-WISE Before you set out on your journey be sure to check the local weather. If you see dark clouds, rough winds, or sudden drops in temperature while you are out on the water, play it safe and return to your dock! 3. USE COMMON SENSE Be alert at all times. Keep your eyes on the water and steer clear of large vessels, buoys and other watercrafts. It’s important to be respectful when out on the water and be sure to obey the navigational aids along the way. 4. DESIGNATE AN ASSISTANT SKIPPER It’s never a good idea to go boating alone. So when you’re about to set off on a boat cruise, make sure more than one person on board the boat is familiar with all aspects of your boat’s operations. That way if the operator is injured or incapacitated in any way, you have set the necessary steps to get everyone back to shore safely. 5. DEVELOP A FLOAT PLAN A float plan lets another person know where you are going, whether that be your family or your local marina etc. A float plan can include the names, addresses and phone numbers of all passengers on board, the boat type, your trip itinerary etc. Anything you would deem as valuable information about yourself or the vessel you are operating.

DRIVING A SKI BOAT WHEN TOWING A RIDER Driving a ski boat is a lot different than just operating a boat without any passengers. Not only do you have to care for the safety of your passengers as you would a regular boat, but now you will also have to care for your rider as well as other boaters and their paths. When operating any type of heavy machinery it’s important to stay alert and practice safety. 1.

DESIGNATE A PASSENGER SPOTTER When towing a rider behind your boat it’s important to appoint a minimum of one spotter per rider. That way the operator of the boat can focus on the appropriate speed and direction of the boat, while the spotter will keep eyes on the rider and can notify the operator if the rider has fallen, wants to speed up or slow down etc.

2. CONSISTENT SPEED Try to maintain a consistent speed for your rider. There are many factors that can drive your speed to increase so it’s important to concentrate on your speed. Some boats will allow you to set a specific speed for your rider, ensuring consistency. If you are not using your controls you should check your speedometer often and have your hand on the throttle making adjustments when necessary. 3. DRIVE STRAIGHT Riders like consistency, and depending on your rider they need consistency, speed and direction in order to hit those tricks. So when you are towing another rider, drive as straight as possible for as long as possible, and when it’s time, be sure to make sharp turn and return the boat to the exact same position in the opposite direction, this will help minimize the amount of waves the rider has to go over. 4. A FAST START Starting fast is the best experience for you (the driver) and the rider. It allows the boat to plane out quickly so you have a clearer view of where you are headed, as well it also gets the rider up quickly and causes them less fatigue. 5. KNOW HOW TO PICK UP YOUR FALLEN RIDER This is the most important step when you’re towing a rider. When a rider falls, be sure to stop the boat immediately without turning. Your spotter will then want to pull the rope into the boat so it does not get stuck in the propeller. Once the boat has slowed and the wake has died down, you can start to turn towards your rider. Turn the boat around slowly and idle back towards your rider. As you approach your rider your spotter can now toss the rope to the rider. From here you can now position yourself and the rider straight and take off again.
