chetek chain of lakes
Big Six Chain of Lakes Chetek, the City of Lakes, is located in northwestern Wisconsin on the Big Six Chain of Lakes — but how many other details of these bodies of water and the land surrounding them is well known? Did you know that these six lakes — Chetek, Prairie, Pokegama, Moose Ear, Ten Mile and Ojaski — cover 3,800 surface acres with the smallest, Moose Ear Lake, covering 33.6 surface acres? Lake Chetek, which appears to be the largest, covers just 683 surface acres, while Prairie Lake has 1,545 surface acres. Lake Chetek is the deepest lake, with a maximum depth of 22 feet. Fish populations in these lakes include Northern Pike, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bluegills, Black Crappies, Pumpkinseeds, Perch, Bullheads, Rock Bass and White Suckers.
MOOSE EAR LAKE On the lower part of Moose Ear Creek, this lake has 33.6 surface acres with a maximum depth of just 6 feet, and has a warm water fish population. An intermittent stream from Couderay Lake and a spring feeder from a pond also supply water to the stream. A 150 acre wetland adjoining the stream near Moose Ear Lake provides habitat for muskrats and nesting puddle ducks.
CHETEK LAKE
With a maximum depth of 22 feet, Chetek Lake has a total of 683 surface acres. It is a recreational lake and is surrounded on most of its area by permanent residences, summer homes, resorts, and the City of Chetek. The city operates a public swimming beach during the summer months and a large public boat landing is located near the city Airport on Lakeview Drive. Lake Chetek is also the site of the Hydroflites Water Ski Team’s shows held throughout the summer from their property located adjacent to the boat landing on Lakeview Drive.
TEN MILE LAKE
This lake at the southern most point of the Chain has a depth of 10 feet and 393 surface acres. This lake is also a soft water drainage impoundment in the Chetek Lake Chain. Muskrats, nesting mallards and wood ducks use the 27 acres of lake edge wetlands.
OJASKI LAKE
Located in the Town of Chetek, Ojaski Lake (also known locally as Mud Lake) covers 567.1 surface acres and has a maximum depth of 15 feet. Pokegama Creek, which flows into Ojaski Lake from the north, provides a spawning area for northern and walleye. Located in a farming area, the lake is surrounded by upland hardwoods. white pine and cultivated farmland. About three acres of marsh wetlands on the northeast shore provide habitat for muskrats, nesting mallards, teal and wood ducks.
POKEGAMA LAKE With 494 surface acres and a maximum depth of 19 feet, Pokegama Lake is a very popular fishing lake. A soft
water drainage lake in the Chetek Chain between Ojaski Lake and Lake Chetek, the immediate lakeshore vegetation is pine and hardwood with the exception of several marsh-edged bays. These marshes provide habitat for muskrats and puddle ducks. Keep your eyes peeled when cruising along the shorelines as deer and other wildlife come down to get a drink of water. Another sight becoming more common each year are Bald Eagles soaring above the lakes, catching fish to feed themselves and their young.
PRAIRIE LAKE
With a maximum depth of 16 feet, Prairie Lake is the largest lake in the Chetek Lake Chain with 1,545 surface acres. A soft water drainage lake, the lake level is maintained by the water control structure on Lake Chetek, and the fish species consist of all those named previously. The lakeshore is predominantly upland hardwoods and pine, and three acres of marsh edge along the lake provide habitat for muskrats, nesting puddle ducks and mergansers. Coot and Canada geese also use the lake during spring and fall migratory periods. The haunting call of the loon can be heard also during the early and late migration times. It is in these waters that the famous floating islands originated, moving from time to time to different locations. The lake runs from the north side of Chetek northward, almost to Cameron and Highway 8. While much of the shoreline is developed with residential homes, cabins and resorts, there is still a large portion of the lake that remains wild, offering natural settings for fishing along the banks of the lake.

Municipal Airport The Chetek Southworth Municipal Airport is located one mile East of downtown Chetek on Lakeview Drive. The land for the airport was originally donated by Fred Southworth, a prominent businessman in Chetek’s earlier days, and was dedicated in 1939. The airport has grown from a single grass strip, now to a 3,401’x 60’ asphalt runway with two GPS approaches, plus a 1,490’ x 120’ turf cross strip. 24 hour self-serve 100LL fuel is available with attractive pricing. There is free ramp parking and tie-down area for planes and the Beuthling Terminal building houses some nice amenities for pilots. A courtesy van and bicycles are also available for transient pilots and passengers.
Chetek Fly-In & Boat Show The public is invited for a day of
food, fun and flying at the 11th annual Chetek Fly-In and Boat Show. The event is put on by volunteers and the proceeds support several Chetek area charities. History of
Chetek
Chetek was first settled in 1863 and platted on Oct. 15, 1875, on land owned by Knapp, Stout & Co. and E. M. Sexton. Chetek was never incorporated as a village but became an incorporated city in 1891. At the time, Chetek was the first and only city in the United States to pass directly from a township system to a full-fledged city. It was also the smallest incorporated city in the United States, having a population then of only 531 people. The origin of the name “Chetek” is mired in controversy. From a variety of sources we are given several explanations as to how the name was derived. One history says the name “Chetek,” which Ojibway Indians called “Sheetak,” means pelican, literally little pelican. This is to distinguish it from Big Chetac located farther north. Another theory says that the name was given by Knapp, Stout & Co. lumbermen for a Chippewa Indian Chief, whose name by various writers was spelled Chetek, Shetek, Shetack, Shetuc, and Chetack, respectively, with the meaning being “between two rivers,” or confluence of rivers. In 1993, a theory presented itself claiming the origin of Chetek comes from the Ojibway word Tchitchag which is part of their high or spiritual language and means soul. The lands now under water due to the higher water levels resulting from the dam were once sacred burial grounds for the native residents. The true origin of the name may forever be a mystery.

Chetek visitor’s Guide 2015
Chippewa
Moraine
The ninth and newest unit of Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scientific Reserve is Chippewa Moraine State Recreation area, which encompasses over 4,000 acres of unique and interesting glacial formations. Dotted throughout the property are numerous small glacial kettle lakes, beaver meadows and tranquil ponds. Fish populations thrive in some of these water bodies, but others are home only to a wide variety of frogs, reptiles, turtles and unseen, secretive pond life creatures. The Ice Age National Trail (which begins at Interstate State Park in St. Croix Falls and ends at Potawatomi State Park in Door County) will eventually provide the hiker with over 1,200 miles of interesting glacial terrain. At Chippewa Moraine, 13 miles of trails offer an assortment of hiking choices—including three popular loop trails. For the more ambitious, a walk to the easternmost end of this segment culminates at Brunet Island State Park in Cornell. Trails are non-motorized with bicycles and horses also not allowed. Well-behaved dogs are encouraged to visit with their owners (treats upon request at the interpretive center office). Winter time visitors are encouraged to borrow a pair of our snowshoes and enjoy some quiet time enjoying the beauty of our winter paradise. Over 60 pairs of snowshoes are available and will fit all ages, including the smallest of children. No rental fees are charged but donations are appreciated.

Remote campsites are available on a first-come-first-served basis and have a fee of $16 per night. These sites contain a fire ring and outdoor privy. The owls, loons, frogs and coyotes will provide an evening chorus for you at no extra charge! The Chippewa Moraine abounds in bird and animal life. For the bird enthusiast, red-headed woodpeckers, indigo buntings, scarlet tanagers, eastern gold finches, sand hill cranes, numerous warblers, and “shimmerings” of ruby-throated hummingbirds are just a few of the many resident and transient species commonly seen here. Bear, deer, fisher, porcupines, coyote, fox and raccoon are some of the larger animals observed while most other species remain hidden. Inside the visitor center are glacial, cultural and natural history displays. Family based nature films can help to fill in a rainy day with bored children. Other popular films explain the glacial process, early logging and river driving. Staff naturalists encourage a hands-on approach and will gladly get out a snake or turtle for children to hold. Nets are available for grasshopper catching and critter feeding. Indoor scavenger hunts (10 different editions) are extremely popular with visiting children, offering up a choice of a prize after being ‘quizzed’ by a patient naturalist. The interpretive center is open Tuesday–Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call ahead before visiting on a holiday as some are designated as closed days. No admission fees are charged at the nature center, although boat landings require a Wisconsin State Park sticker. Stickers are sold at the center and are good at any state park within the calendar year.

walleyes for chetek | Chetek lakes protection association
Chetek Lakes Protection Association We hope you are enjoying the beautiful Chetek Chain of Lakes and are finding what makes our lakes so special. A lot goes into keeping the lakes sustainable and the Chetek Lakes Protection Association is here to assist.
What is the Chetek Lakes Protection Association?
The Chetek Lakes Protection Association, or CLPA, is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the Chetek Chain of Lakes. The CLPA has approximately 480 members who recognize the Chetek Chain of Lakes as a natural resource that greatly enhances our quality of life and appreciates the value the lakes bring to tourism, our economy and local tax base. The CLPA works to protect the natural resource of our lakes and preserve our privilege to fish, boat, hunt and swim. They also support numerous winter sports that take part in enjoying the scenic beauty of our lakes.
Some of our goals are:
• To pursue projects that fit with our Comprehensive Lake Management Plan to address, and lower our nutrient load into our lake system • To prevent invasive species from entering and establishing themselves in our lake system • To pursue policy initiatives to reduce polluted runoff from urban and agricultural sources
How can you support the Chetek Chain of Lakes?
HETEK AKES ROTECTION SSOCIATION INCORPORATED
There are many ways to help enhance the chain of lakes through volunteering time and resources. 1. Join the CLPA—Membership consists of local residents, local businesses, non-residents, lakeshore property owners, and people from other states who vacation at our resorts and love our lakes. You don’t have to live on the lake to become a supporting member. With low yearly dues, you can be part of the CLPA and be part of keeping the Chetek Chain of Lakes strong. 2. Volunteer—We are continuously looking for volunteers to help with projects—ranging from providing educational materials for shore-land owners, to helping craft lake policies that fit our lakes needs (such as installing fish habitat structures, winter aeration and shoreline restoration practices). All help is appreciated! 3. Buy a shirt—We offer shirts and hats that show your support of the CLPA. 4. Donate—The CLPA is a non-profit organization that operates from donated funds. If you don’t want to join the group but want to give a one-time, monthly or yearly donation, visit our website www.cheteklakespa.org for more information on how to donate, or attend a monthly meeting. We post our current projects to the website so you can choose what project you would like to support. Between the financial support, grants, volunteer hours and everything in between, we appreciate anything you can donate or provide!
We are the voice for the Chetek Chain of Lakes—please join us! Send an email or visit our website for more information

Walleyes for Chetek
The mission for Walleyes for Chetek is to rebuild the Chetek Chain of Lakes as the “walleye capital of Wisconsin.” The local organization continues to stock extended-growth walleye to increase the lake’s walleye population and fishery. Leading up to 2015, the local organization stocked approximately 4,000 walleye into the Chetek Chain of Lakes each fall for the past 12 years. Walleyes for Chetek, now in its 13th year of existence, was unable to stock the Chetek chain in 2015 due to the Department of Natural Resources stocking 34,959 fingerling walleye in the six-lake chain as part of the Wisconsin Walleye Initiative. The Wisconsin Walleye Initiative is a program developed by the Department of Natural Resources to increase the number of walleyes in state walleye waters by expanding production of large fingerling walleye at state, private and tribal fish hatcheries for stocking in waters accessible to the public. This was the second time in three years that the DNR has stocked the chain of lakes 34,000 or more walleye. Because of that, the DNR advised Walleyes for Chetek to put stocking on hold for a year and wait until the fall of 2016 before stocking any more fish. By taking a year off from stocking, Walleyes for Chetek is planning to stock roughly 10,000 juvenile walleye into the Chetek chain in 2016. Purchasing larger, juvenile walleye will increase the survival rate for the stocked fish. Counting the two years of the DNR’s stocking, plus Walleyes for Chetek’s addition fish they have stocked, there has been close to 90,000 walleye put into the Chetek chain in less than three years. In the 12 years of stocking, Walleyes for Chetek has purchased and released nearly 65,000 juvenile walleye at a cost of approximately $117,000. This is the third year that the Walleyes for Chetek officers—Tyler Florczak, Josh Akins and James Akins—will be heading the organization after co-founders Paul Pawlisch, Larry Grabowski and Larry Stafsholt handed over the reins and responsibilities of the Walleyes for Chetek in 2013. The 4,000 walleye were hatched and raised by Gollon Bait & Fish Farm, of Dodgeville, and were also delivered and stocked at Pokegama boat landing. The cost is $1.70 per fish, and all of the funds raised through donations and sales of raffle tickets that are sold annually go toward the purchase of walleye. “Open water fishermen and ice fishermen have reported catching many more walleye in the last few years, and that is not by chance. It just goes to show you that a fishery can improve and receive a boost when the community gets involved,” said Florczak. “We have received an unbelievable amount of support for our Walleyes for Chetek raffle giveaway on Labor Day weekend. We’re certainly appreciative for all of the donations and support we received from the Chetek Resort Owners Association, CLPA, the Chetek Fire Department, local businesses, organizations and individuals who make the stocking possible. The money goes directly to purchasing walleye annually, and as a tourist town, it draws people to the area and our lakes.” To garner funding, the organization will once again hold a Labor Day Weekend raffle with a grand prize of $1,000, as well as various other prizes, raffles, silent auction items and more; tickets are available at local sports shops, resorts, restaurants/bars and other retailers. This year’s Walleyes for Chetek raffle will again take place at Gilligans in Chetek Sunday, Sept. 4. Anyone willing to donate cash or items to be used as prizes for the August raffle can mail donations to:

of the northwoods
Bluegill (Lepomis macroschirus) • Prefers warm, shallow waters under cover of weed beds and submerged brush, usually found in 4 to 6 feet of water, but in deeper water during winter months • Diet includes algae, aquatic vegetation, zooplankton, insect larvae, insects, fish eggs, worms and occasionally small minnows/fish • Average size limit in Chetek chain is 7 to 9 inches
crappie (Poxoxis annularis/nigromaculatus)
game fish of the northwoods
Game Fish • Found in open water and places with submerged stumps/logs, rock ledges and areas with some aquatic vegetation reaching above the surface and found in shallow water May–July when spawning and suspended in deeper water around 8-15 feet of water in other months • Diet includes zooplankton, insect larvae, insects, worms, leeches, minnows and immature fish • Average size limit in Chetek chain is 8 to 12 inches
largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu)
• Found in warm, shallow and weedy areas and also around structure, weed lines and underwater points. Depth varies from 2 feet of water to 15 feet. • Feed by sight and hunt for their food by ambushing unwary prey from behind logs, below boat docks and at weed lines that drop into deeper water. They eat insects, worms, leeches, suckers, shiners, shad, frogs and fish under 12 inches in size. • Average size limit in Chetek chain is 14 to 17 inches
walleye (Sander vitreus) • Generally dawn and dusk are the feeding times for this light sensitive fish—they are a schooling fish, and like the perch, can be found within a few feet of the bottom near rock bars, drop offs and underwater points • Feed primarily on minnows and other small fish, but will eat insects, leeches and worms • Average size limit in Chetek chain is 11 to 24 inches
northern pike (Esox lucius) • Can be found in virtually all water depths throughout the year • Prefer shallow, cool water with extensive weeds/weed lines • As lake waters warm, they often seek cooler waters near inlets streams and springs • A voracious feeder that finds most fish and creatures—even ducks, squirrels and sandpipers are fair game—feed primarily on suckers, shiners, shad and fish 18 inches or under. • Average size limit in Chetek chain is 24 to 32 inches

Outdoor Recreation & Trails Bike Routes
There are 31.6 miles of marked bike routes available in the Chetek area along the west and east sides of Prairie Lake, along the west side of Pokegama Lake and through the City of Chetek and around the “Island” of Chetek. The routes are marked with a bike symbol and arrows painted on the road. A map of the routes is available at www.chetek.net or from one of the local tourist centers.
All-terrain Vehicles The Chetek ATV Cruzers is an All-Terrain Vehicle club with over 75 members—with many members from outside the immediate area to help support efforts and provide ATV enthusiasts with recreational opportunities to ride the trails. The City of Chetek has been very supportive and has worked with the club to sign and open many streets to get to most of the city’s businesses. The trails are made possible by very generous private landowners that allow trails to cross on their land, and also the recreational officer who goes above and beyond for the ATV clubs of Barron County. The club has many volunteers that help to secure landowner agreements and maintain trails and road routes. Many members donate their equipment and time to build and maintain the trails. Due to the generous support of businesses in Chetek, Cameron, Dallas, and New Auburn—the ATV Cruzers have newly purchased a tractor and mower to maintain the trails. A new trail has been completed and opened that runs from Chetek to New Auburn.
Join the Club! Your membership means support for the local, state and federal efforts to keep the trails open and to utilize the public lands for recreational enjoyment. Your membership also helps to fund education for ATV users on trail etiquette/considerate trail use so that those who enjoy the great outdoors on their ATVs and UTVs can continue to do so. Membership also helps to pay for the maintenance and cleaning of the trails. The Chetek ATV Club works hard to maintain the trails for everyone who uses them.
Proposed work on trails for the 2016 season includes a trail from New Auburn to Dallas (to complete a trail circle). There are trail heads at the Chetek Lanes Event Center & Pizzeria and in the Chetek Industrial Park behind Parker Hannifin where riders can unload their machines and park trucks/trailers. ATV city maps and Barron County ATV trail maps are available at the Visitor Center and at most Chetek businesses. Ride safe! Visit our website at www.chetekatvcruzers.org | New members are always welcome
Snowmobiling Barron County has over 250 miles of groomed and well-marked snowmobile trails. The trail-head of the Tuscobia State Trail, a 76-mile abandoned railroad bed, begins just north of Rice Lake and ends in Park Falls. The newest “Rails to Trails” is the Wild Rivers Trail which also begins in Rice Lake and covers 97 miles, going north to Superior. For the latest information on trail status, please contact David Moin by phone at 715-637-4275 or via email at: david.moin@co.barron.wi.us. The local snowmobile club is the Chetek Snow Flyers. To obtain more information about this organization and/or membership in the club, please contact President Mike Schmidt at 715-829-8925, email cheteksnowflyers@yahoo.com, visit www.cheteksnowflyers.net or search Chetek Snow Flyers on Facebook. Lodging in the Chetek area is available during the winter by contacting the Chetek Resort Owners Association. Visit their website, www.chetek.net, and click on Info Request Form to inquire with the members that have availability.
cross country ski, snowshoe, hiking & running trail The cross country ski/snowshoe/hiking/running trail begins behind the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser High School/Middle School building on the west edge of town off of Knapp Street. There is ample parking at the start of the route. The trail begins adjacent to the maintenance shed located next to the baseball field. The cross country ski/snowshoe trail loops out onto Bailey Lake. If you’re interested in the hiking/running trail, follow the school loop that is located behind the school. This trail is used by the cross country running team when school is in session. The cross country ski/snowshoe trail is a project of the Chetek Chamber of Commerce. Donations are accepted for snowmobile gas/maintenance. Grooming is done annually on a volunteer basis.

congratulations! $500 Fish caught on
Pokegama Lake Paul Hendricks, using a wax worm on a hook and bobber, was the lucky fisherman to catch a 5.7-oz. bluegill with a $500 tag for Fish-O-Rama. The fish was sponsored by Northern Exposure resort, with managers George Zappa and Trudy Wylie presenting the check to Hendricks. Pictured above, left to right, are Zappa, Hendricks and Wylie. Hendricks, from Cuba City, was fishing while vacationing for a few weeks. Courtesy of The Chetek Alert, July 1, 2015 issue
