PLEASE TOUCH THE ART CLARA HETHERINGTON, GRACE CARLSON, SIDNEY RENELT

2

The Sheldon Art Museum is a hub for expression. Thousands of art pieces are stored and exhibited within this building. In each piece that is on display at the Sheldon, there was a unique creative process that occurred in order to express the message that each artist wanted to portray, but the only part of this process that the viewers are seeing is exhibition. The goal of our addition to the Sheldon is to create a space that allows for UNL students to be fully immersed in the creative process. “Please Touch the Art” is an informal approach to taking in how art is traditionally observed

and created. Through colorful, immersive installations and spaces where creativity can be fully expressed, this building engages its occupants in the creative process so that they can view themselves as artists. Looking at this creative process, we categorized each level of our addition into a different part of this process; LEARN, CREATE, and EXHIBIT. The learn floor serves as part of the creative process where occupants learn and are inspired by art. Moving to the create floor, students can engage and be inspired by other students engaging in the creative process through the creation of individual

work. The exhibition floor allows students to view and exhibit their own artwork as well as participate in an exhibition that allows for them to leave their mark on the building. These three levels are connected through a grand staircase allowing students to craft their own creative journey as they travel through each space. Sidney Renelt, Grace Carlson, and I were chosen to compete in the SGH + Dri Design Competition and had the opportunity to share “Please Touch the Art” with students. staff, and a select panel of reviewers. 3

YEAR 5

The focus of this project was directed towards speculating a potential Omaha Urban Core site redesign with a large site encapsulating the new Farnam Streetcar line and ranging to Turner Park. In choosing a portion of this site to invigorate, I focused on capping the interstate from Douglas St. to Harney St. as well as situating program on the East Blocks adjacent to Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church and the Alma Apartments. This project required speculation on sustainable and resilient design and cohesion with the community in this area. After doing extensive research

on the existing programming and opportunities for implementations regarding live, work, play, environment, and transportation, research was compiled and utilized in developing master plans of speculative urban core redesign. This project aims to promote sustainability within both the community and the environment by creating a fusion of spaces that offer educational resources, community engagement opportunities, and connectivity through site lines and stepping forms.

HAND DRAWING IN THE DIGITAL AGE

VISIBLE CITIES CLARA HETHERINGTON

28

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino describes beautifully intricate, surreal cities in the Kahn’s domain, with different chapters falling under specific categories of the way in which the architecture is described and envisioned. This drawing was inspired by his chapters regarding “Architecture and Memory”, where each imaginary city is hand drawn and digitally shaded to represent my interpretations of the wondrous cities detailed by Calvino’s descriptive writing.

“In Maurilia, the traveler is invited to visit the city and, at the same time, to examine some old post cards that show it as it used to be: the same identical square with a hen in the place of a bus station, a bandstand in the place of the overpass...”

“Zora has the quality of remaining in your memory point by point, in its succession of streets, of houses along the streets, and of doors and windows in the houses, though nothing in them possesses a special beauty or rarity.”

“The city does not consist of this, but of relationships between the measurements of its space and the events of its past.”

“Buildings have spiral staircases encrusted with spiral seashells, where perfect telescopes and violins are made, where the foreigner hesitating between two women always encounters a third...”

“Admitting that the magnificence and prosperity of the metropolis Maurilia, when compared to the old, provincial Maurilia, cannot compensate for a certain lost grace.”

“He remembers the order by which the copper clock follows the barber’s striped awning, then the fountain with nine jets, the astronomer’s glass tower...”

“I could tell you how many steps make up the streets rising like stairways, and the degree of the arcades’ curves, and what kind of zinc scales cover the roofs; but I already know this would be the same as telling you nothing.”

“Isidora, therefore, is the city of his dreams: with one difference.”

“Beware of saying to them that sometimes different cities follow one another on the same site and under the same name, born and dying without knowing one another, without communication among themselves.”

“This city which cannot be expunged from the mind is like an armature, a honeycomb in whose cells each of us can place the things he wants to remember...”

“The city, however, does not tell its past, but contains it like the lines of a hand, written in the corners of the streets, the gratings of the windows, the bannisters of the steps,... every segment marked in turn with scratches, indentations, scrolls.”

“The dreamed of city contained him as a young man; he arrives at Isidora in his old age.”

“At times even the names of the inhabitants remain the same, and their voices’ accent, and also the features of the faces; but the gods who live beneath names and above places have gone off without a word and outsiders have settled in their places.”

“Zora’s secret lies in the way your gaze runs over patterns following one another as in a musical score where not a note can be altered or displaced.”

“A city with sixty silver domes, bronze statues of all the gods, streets paved with lead, a crystal theater, a golden cock that crows each morning on a tower.”

“In the square there is a wall where the old men sit and watch the young go by; he is seated in a row with them. Desires are already a memory.”

ARCHITECTURE AND MEMORY CLARA HETHERINGTON

30

This project explores the relationship between architecture and memory. Each drawing on the left side of the spread depicts imaginary cities growing out of a person’s head, resembling the “postcard” image of what the city and person used to look like in their prime, encompassing the relationship between a person and their most cherished memories of different places. Next to each postcard the faces and cities begin to blur, pixilate, distort, and disperse signifying the breakdown of memory over time, both regarding the inner self and the memories of place. Buildings and facial features begin to run together, creating a cloudy mess of broken memories.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WEST OMAHA SATELLITE CLINIC 20502 Roosevelt St, Omaha NE

32

Children’s Hospital is set to open this year as a new outpatient facility to serve young children and their families. I had the opportunity to help this project along during multiple stages. My work on this project included addressing redlines for construction documents, detailing wall sections and floor plans, creating “Kuula” panoramic VR views, and renderings for client use as well as our website. I also had the opportunity to visit this site recently and sit in on an OAC meeting, as well as walk through the building and look for any issues with construction thus far.

Renderings done in Twinmotion 33

ALTUS ARCHITECTURAL STUDIOS

MYRTUE MEDICAL CENTER 1213 Garfield Avenue, Harlan IA

I have been helping with this project since summer of 2022 when it first began in schematic design phase. I sat in on initial client meetings and developed design options in Revit for an addition/expansion of their existing emergency department. Working with lead architects on this project, I learned important aspects of ED layouts and configurations and developed deliverables for client meetings. I also helped with posting addendums, detailing wall sections, and carrying out redlines through the Construction Administration phase. I also created a site topography model in Rhino to combine with the Revit model in Twinmotion for renderings. I have also assisted in annotating floor and finish plans, and creating layouts for the renovation of this hospital’s Cafe and Cafeteria.

Altus teamed up with Olsson and Koch Tennis Clubhouse to reconfigure the check in/concessions area, replace windows, and add a Dutch door to this space. I began this project by creating a model in Revit from existing CAD drawings. Once the existing space was fully modeled I worked with our interior designers to model three layouts for check in desk configurations. I also took part in an initial client meeting where I presented these three options and recorded notes on what the client’s preferences were in regards to these options.

EMERALD NURSING AND REHABILITATION 7410 Mercy Rd, Omaha NE

38

Altus worked with Emerald Nursing to remodel components of this existing structure. I was asked to create renderings of the exterior for the client, and this was my first attempt at using Twinmotion. I worked in Rhino to create a simple site model for additional site context. In Twinmmotion I had to match brick and panel colors to get an accurate depiction of the exterior facade. I also worked in Photoshop to add signage. This project was a fantastic opportunity for me to experiment with Twinmotion and to facilitate a workflow between programs.

ALTUS MARKETING

40

I have worked with our director of marketing on many different projects throughout my time at Altus. This is an example of a project page highlighting our work done at the Monroe Meyer Institute in Omaha. I have laid out all of our projects in this established format for different marketing pursuits and am still working with our Director to ensure that we have an effective system for organizing project pages to pull for project proposals. Other marketing duties that I carry out include updating team member resumes and formatting posts for social media.
