PROJECT BRIEF

THE SPINE IS A FORWARD THINKING INNOVATION DISTRICT CENTERED AROUND THE INNOVATION AND SPACE INDUSTRY. THE SPINE SUPPORTS THREE PILLARS: SPACE, INNOVATION AND EXPERIENCE. A CATALYST FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE CITY'S CITIZENS, THIS DYNAMIC MIXEDUSE DEVELOPMENT PRODUCES A VIBRANT, DIVERSIFIED, AND INTEGRATED COMMUNITY THAT IS INDICATIVE OF CHARLESTON'S EXPANDING INNOVATION INDUSTRY. THE DRIVING FACTOR BEHIND THIS DEVELOPMENT IS THE NEED FOR THE STATE TO HAVE A PERMANENT NASA FACILITY IN THE FUTURE. WITH A MISSION-DRIVEN, MIXED-USE SCHEME THAT PROMOTES POSITIVE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC REFORM FOR NORTH CHARLESTON, THE SPINE'S AMBITIOUS PROPOSAL TURNS THE REGION INTO A MAGNET FOR SPACE INNOVATION.

PROJECT BRIEF

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO REDEVELOP THE SITE, WHICH IS AN EXISTING SURFACE PARKING LOT TO A VIBRANT MIX-USE DEVELOPMENT WHICH INCLUDES A SMALL MUSEUM DEDICATED TO THE BOW RIVED PLACED ON IT. IT IS AN IMPORTANT LOCATION AS IT OCCUPIES AN IMPORTANT POSITION AS A GATEWAY INTO AND OUT OF THE DOWNTOWN AND IS AN IMPORTANT HISTORIC NODE WITH MULTIPLE PREVIOUS USES. THE RIVER PATH CONNECTS EASTWEST AT THE NORTH OF THE SITE, AND EVERY DAY, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE PASS BY OR THROUGH HERE.

THE CONEPT WAS BASED ON KEVIN LYNCH'S 5 ELEMENTS OF THE CITY, WHERE THE MUSEUM WAS MY LANDMARD LOCATION AND I CREATED DIFFERENT NODES AND PATHS WITH THE PLACEMENT OF THE MIX-USE BUILDINGS. THERE IS A MAIN PEDESTRIAN PATH ALONG WITH A BIKE PATH THAT GOES ALL ALONG AND INSIDE THE SITE. THERE ARE DIFFERENT KINDS OF PUBLIC SPACES CREATED THAT EACH PERFORM A DIFFERENT ROLE IN ACTIVATING THE SITE.

PROJECT BRIEF

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES OF GOOD STREETS’ IN CALGARY? WHAT IS MISSING FROM THE PLACES THAT ARE NOT GOOD? HOW DO THESE STREETS HELP TO DEFINE CALGARY’S SENSE OF PLACE? THE AREA OF STUDY IS TTHE 1ST STREET.

1ST STREET SW - CALGARY IS SITUATED BETWEEN THE BOW & ELBOW RIVERS, PASSING THROUGH DOWNTOWN. IT WAS ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS SCARTH STREET BEFORE THE CITY OF CALGARY CONVERTED THE NAMES TO NUMBERS IN 1904. THROUGH OUR ANALYSIS OF THE STREET AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, WE FOUND THAT IT IS GENERALLY A GOOD STREET WITH A FEW NEGATIVE POINTS.

PROJECT BRIEF 05

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO REVIVE THE FORGOTTEN CULTURES AND TRADITIONS OF INDIA. DUE TO THE IMMENSE GLOBALIZATION HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD, IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO FORGET OUR IDENTITY AS OUR CULTURE IS WHAT DEFINES US, INFLUENCES US, OUR THOUGHT, LIFESTYLE, WHAT WE DO , WHO WE BASICALLY ARE. THE DIFFERENT STRATEGIES USED IN THE PROJECT MAKE USE OF THE TYPOGRAPHY OF THE SITE ALONG WITH THE CONTEXT TO SEND ACROSS THIS MESSAGE.

STARTING WITH THE QUESTION; WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE TO ME? THIS WAS ME QUESTIONING MY YEARS OF STUDYING ARCHITECTURE. THINKING ABOUT THIS, WHAT CAME TO MY MIND WAS THAT IT IS AN EVERLASTING MYSTERY TO NOT ONLY THE USERS, BUT ALSO TO ITS SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT. IT CREATES CURIOSITY IN THE USER TO VISIT THE BUILDING. THIS IS A MYSTERY WHICH IS FOREVER CHANGING, NOT SOMETHING THAT WILL BORE YOU AFTER A FEW VISITS. IT ENCOURAGES THE USER TO KEEP COMING AGAIN AND AGAIN. THIS MYSTERY CAN BE CREATED IN MANY WAYS; THE FORM, FUNCTION, SPACES, TECHNOLOGY USED, ETC.

THE CONCEPT IS TO PLACE AN URBAN RAMP ON THE SITE SUCH THAT IT PASSES THOUGH THE DIFFERENT MASSES OF THE CULTURAL CENTRE AND IS ALSO CONNECTED TO THE URBAN STAIRS LEADING UP TO THE FORT WALL. THE CONNECTION POINT OF THE RAMP AND THE MASS OR THE RAMP AND THE STAIRS WILL CREATE VIEWING DECKS ON DIFFERENT LEVELS SO THAT PEOPLE CAN RELAX AND ENJOY THE VIEW OF THE BEAUTIFUL CITY AND THE AMER FORT OVERLOOKING BELOW ON THEIR JOURNEY TO THE TOP. THE CENTRE IS DIVIDED IN 5 MAIN PARTS WITH THE MASSES ROTATED AT DIFFERENT ANGLES SO THAT EACH MASS PROVIDES A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE CITY.

THIS CENTRE IS THE BRIDGE BETWEEN THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF INDIA'S VARIOUS CULTURES. THE DIFFERENT SPACES PROVIDED WILL HELP THE FUTURE GENERATION LEARN ABOUT THE PAST. THE OPEN AIR PLAZA SHOWCASES THE PRESENT HERE EVERYONE WILL WATCH THE HAPPENINGS GOING ON. CANTILEVERED BY A RESTAURANT, IT IS A GOOD GATHERING SPOT FOR DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES AND RELAXING. ITS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR INFORMAL SOCIAL LEARNING FROM THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. THE RAMP IS NOT ONLY A MODE OF ACCESS TO THE CENTRE BUT ALSO THEIR PATH TO THE FUTURE. IT IS ALSO AN EASIER CONNECTION FOR ALL THE PEOPLE COMING TO THE FORT WALL AT THE TOP OF THE HILL.

PROJECT BRIEF 06

THE MAIN GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO REDEVELOP THE LOCAL AREA WHILE KEEPING THE EXISTING STRUCTURES AND BUILDINGS STILL STANDING, AND TO FOCUS ON THE DIFFERENT CHALLENGES FACED BY THE PEOPLE LIVING/WORKING IN THAT AREA. DUBAI INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL CENTRE IS THE MAIN FINANCIAL HUB OF THE CITY AND LACKED MANY URBAN DESIGN NECESSITIES IN DIFFERENT AREAS THAT HAD TO BE WORKED ON.

THE SITE IS MORE ACCESSIBLE. ADDITIONAL ROADS ARE BEING ADDED. IT IS STARTING TO BECOME MORE COMPLEX.

25 PORTFOLIO 2023
FIG: 2.1: LOCATION AND ITS PAST U.A.E A YEAR BEFORE THE LAUNCH OF THE METRO LINE. VERY LITTLE CONSTRUCTION WAS ONGOING, IT WAS ALMOST A VACANT PIECE OF LAND.
NO NOTICEABLE CHANGE IS DETECTED.
A LARGE INCREASE IN THE PERCENTAGE OF BUILT-UP AREA CAN BE NOTICED.
MORE GREEN SPACES ARE ADDED AND ADDITIONAL PROJECTS ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
CURRENT CONDITION OF THE SITE. DUBAI DIFC 75 HECTARE

THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO WORK IN A GROUP OF FOUR PEOPLE AND REDESIGN THE URBAN AREA AROUND THE DUBAI INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL CENTRE AREA. AFTER A THROUGH SITE VISIT , THERE WAS AN ANALYSIS CREATED OF THE AREA. LOOKING AT THE CONDITIONS AT SITE A LOT OF THINGS WERE NOTED TO IMPROVE IN THE EXISTING SITE.

DESPITE IT BEING ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DISTRICTS IN THE CITY IT HAS VERY FEW CONNECTIONS DIRECTLY VIA ROAD. IT HAS A VERY GOOD CONNECTION TO THE CITY'S METRO LINE . BUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE METRO AND ITS URBAN CONTEXT NEEDS TO BE MORE EMPHASIZED TO ENHANCE THE SURROUNDING URBAN ENVIRONMENT.

LACK OF PUBLIC SPACES AND A PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT WAS ALSO NOTICED. VARIOUS BUILDINGS ON SITE WERE ALSO NOT WELL MAINTAINED. NOTICING THE IMPORTANCE OF ITS LOCATION MAINTENANCE OF THE SITE AND BUILDING FACADE IS ALSO A NECESSITY.

THE ABSENCE OF GREEN AREAS ON THE SITE WAS A MAJOR CONCERN AS IT CREATES A HUGE IMPACT ON THE MICRO-CLIMATE AND IS ALSO PLAYS A HUGE PART IN PROVIDING NATURAL SHADE FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE LARGE HOT CLIMATE OF DUBAI.

I WORKED ON ALL THE URBAN ANALYSIS AND DESIGN SOLUTIONS TOGETHER WITH THE GROUP. WHILE THE 3D MODEL [BOTH COMPUTER AIDED AND PHYSICAL] WAS DONE BY ME ALONE WITH THE HELP OF 3DS MAX, REVIT AND LASER CUT MODELING. EVERY MEMBER WAS GRADED BASED ON THEIR WORK AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROJECT.

IT WAS A COMBINED EFFORT WORKING ON THIS PROJECT. EXCEPT FOR THE CONCEPT SKETCHES AND DIAGRAM. I WORKED ON THE MASTER-PLAN, ANALYSIS DIAGRAMS, 3D MODEL [RENDER] AND THE PHYSICAL MODEL [LASER CUT]. THE 3D AND PHYSICAL MODELS WERE DONE BY ME ALONE..

PROJECT BRIEF 07

THE GOAL WAS TO CREATE A COMMUNITY BASE ON HIGH STANDARDS & CREATIVE SOLUTIONS THAT WILL SHAPE THE LIFESTYLE OF ITS RESIDENTS TO BE HEALTHIER & MORE SOCIABLE. SITUATED IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE RURAL CITY OF RAS AL KHAIMAH, U.A.E, THIS PIECE OF LAND WAS IN A UNIQUE LOCATION OFFERING AMAZING VIEWS OF THE MARJAN ISLANDS TO ITS USERS .

THE GOAL WAS TO :

1. PROMOTE A MORE WALKABLE COMMUNITY AND STIMULATE A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE

2. FOCUSING ON UNIT AND LINKING PEOPLE TOGETHER BY STIMULATING MORE SOCIAL INTERACTION FOR A MORE EXTROVERTED COMMUNITY

3. HAVE A HIGH STANDARD OF LIVING WITH A SAFE BOND BETWEEN ITS MEMBERS

33 PORTFOLIO 2023
FIG: 3.1: LOCATION ANALYSIS AND ITS PAST

THE FIRST STEP OF THE STRATEGY WAS TO LAYOUT INTERSECTING GRIDS THAT WILL PROVIDE POINTS OF INTERSECTION WHICH ACT AS HUBS FOR SOCIAL INTERACTION AND A PHYSICAL EMBODIMENT OF 'LINKING' BY THE COMMUNITY, WHICH IS THEN CONTINUED THROUGHOUT BY USING BRIDGES TO CONNECT THE PODIUMS TOGETHER AND RAMPS THAT CONNECT THE PODIUMS TO THE OPEN SPACES. THUS MAKING THE OVERALL DESIGN MORE COHERENT AND CONSISTENT WITH THE STRATEGY.

THE GRIDS ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE WALK-ABILITY OF THE COMMUNITY I.E., A COMPLETELY CAR-FREE CENTRAL SPACE [CARS ARE ONLY AT THE PERIPHERY OF THE SITE, WITH THE RESIDENTIAL PARKING ACCOMMODATED ON THE PODIUM], DESIGNED TO BRING THE PEOPLE OF THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER. TAKING THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS INTO CONSIDERATION, GRIDS, BUILDINGS AND HIERARCHIES WERE DESIGNED AND CALCULATED TO PROVIDE MAXIMUM COMFORT, SHADE, WIND AND AN OVERALL MORE ENJOYABLE AND SAFER OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE.

CONTAINERS A MIXED USE BUILDING

ACADEMIC : ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN V [JAN 2018 - JUNE 2018]

PROFESSOR : BASSIM SALEH

LOCATION : SHARJAH, U.A.E

CLIMATE : HOT DESERT CLIMATE

PROJECT BRIEF 08

THE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A MIX - USE HOTEL BLDG AT A WATERFRONT SITE. THE AIM WAS TO BUILD A HOTEL THAT WOULD CATER TO THE DIFFERENT NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE COMING THERE INCLUDING A SHOPPING MALL AND A BUSINESS CENTER.

AROUND THE WORLD, MILLIONS OF SHIPPING CONTAINERS ARE SHIPPED AND NEVER SENT BACK TO THEIR ORIGIN SIMPLY BECAUSE OF THE COST OF SHIPPING THEM BACK. THEY ARE SIMPLY LEFT AT THE PORT. THE AMOUNT OF ENERGY REQUIRED TO MELT THEM DOWN IS JUST TOO HIGH [8000KW].

REASONS TO USE CONTAINERS:

O RE-USING CONTAINERS

O STRUCTURAL STABILITY

O LOCAL [FROM CITY PORT]

O FASTER CONSTRUCTION

O CHEAP

37 PORTFOLIO 2023
FIG: 4.1: CONCEPT DESIGN 01

THE MALL, BUSINESS CENTER AND HOTEL WERE PLACED ONE ABOVE THE OTHER, IN ACCORDANCE TO THE PRIVACY LEVEL OF EACH SPACE. THE HEIGHT OF THE HOTEL AND BUSINESS CENTER WAS INCREASED IN PROPORTION TO THE NUMBER OF ITS USERS AS OPPOSED TO THE AREA OF THE MALL.

THE HOTEL WAS THEN DIRECTED TO THE NORTH, TO GET THE BEST DAYLIGHT AND SEA VIEW. A LARGE ATRIUM WAS ALSO PLACED IN THE CENTRE TO GIVE DAYLIGHT TO ALL THE USERS AND ALSO PROVIDE NATURAL VENTILATION INSIDE.

THERE IS A LARGE PODIUM AFTER EVERY 7 FLOORS WHICH CATERES TO VARIOUS DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES FOR ALL ITS USERS. THE TOP MOST PODIUM HAS A HEALTH CENTRE AND SWIMMING POOL FACING THE SEA.

SHIPPING CONTAINERS WERE JOINED AND REPURPOSED TO BE USED AS HOTEL ROOMS. TWO CONTAINERS WERE MERGED TO EITHER BE SINGLE OR DOUBLE BEDROOMS, WHILE THE SUITES CONSISTED OF THREE CONTAINERS. EACH ROOM HAS A GARDEN TERRACE WHICH HELPS TO KEEP THE MICROCLIMATE COOLER.

CHALLENGED TO CREATE AN AFFORDABLE AND DESIRABLE ACCOMMODATION FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS THAT IS TO BE WELL INTEGRATED INTO UAE'S URBAN FABRIC. IT WAS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR DISCONNECTED SITES ALONG THE SHEIKH ZAYED ROAD, DUBAI. THE SITE CHOSEN WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE FINANCIAL CENTRE METRO STATION, SHOWCASING ACCESSIBILITY FOR YOUNG GRADUATES TO COMMUTE THROUGH THE CITY. THE MASS WAS SPLIT TO CREATE AN URBAN CORRIDOR CONNECTING THE STREET ENVIRONMENT AND THE SITE'S METRO ACCESSIBILITY TO ITS USERS AND ALSO CREATING NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMERCIAL EXPERIENCES ALONG THE WAY.

THE TOWERS WERE ROTATED TOWARDS THE NORTHEN DIRECTION TO MAXIMIZE THE NATURAL SHADE ON ITS FACADE DURING THE EXTREME SUMMER HEAT. THE DIFFERENT HEIGHTS OF THE TOWERS CREATED A MULTI-LAYERED COMMUNITY WITH COMMON FACILITIES THAT ARE ECONOMIC AND ALSO HOUSED START-UP SPACES FOR ITS TENANTS TO GROW IN THEIR PROFESSION.

PHYSICAL MODELING SKILLS

PHYSICAL MODELING IS AN IMPORTANT TECHNIQUE TO EXPRESS OUR IDEAS AND CONCEPTS IN A REAL WORLD SCALE. I USED DIFFERENT MATERIALS RANGING FROM WOOD AND CARDBOARD TO CHIP PAPER AND FOAM BOARDS.

THE MODELS PRESENTED HERE WERE MADE NOT ONLY THROUGH HAND BUT ALSO VIA A LASER CUTTING MACHINE [IN SOME CASES] IN THE LATER STAGES OF THE PROJECT. LOOKING AND EXPERIENCING THE PROJECT IN ITS DIFFERENT STAGES AND USE OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS GIVES A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF IT.
