Newsletter February 2019

From the Headteacher The lead up to Christmas was a busy one with the Santa Scramble running for its second year. We are indebted to the group of volunteers who make this happen alongside our own staff who readily gave up their time to help out. Year 7 visited Chew Magna for their service and this was followed up by a successful evening of carols and readings with students, staff, parents and friends of the school. After a term of really successful house competitions we were treated to an excellent afternoon of ‘Chew’s Got Talent’ where a budding stand up comedian saw off stiff competition from some great bands and singers. Bishop Sutton, East Harptree, Stanton Drew, Ubley and Winford primary schools have all recently joined us in the Lighthouse Partnership Trust (LSP) which has been particularly pleasing. We have continued to work closely with the Trust with a joint Sixth Form Conference at UWE taking place amongst the three secondary schools. The PE Department have held their usual schedule of fixtures and extra curricular activities with some notable successes against good opposition which has been wonderful to be able to celebrate. The Art Department have held trips both to London to visit the Tate Modern and further afield to Venice and Florence. Congratulations to all of the students who took part in the recent 4x4 Challenge and performed brilliantly. The Sixth Form were so fortunate to host a visit from Katharine Viner, the editor in chief from The Guardian who visited the school to work alongside students. The Annual Chew Valley Dance Festival which showcased both our own students and those from some of our feeder primary schools, received rave reviews. Finally thank you to everyone who attended the session for parents on our reporting process which enabled us to gain valuable feedback and have a good discussion on any future decisions in this area. I very much look forward to seeing parents at school events in coming months. Gareth Beynon

Sixth Form UWE Conference Around 22 Business, ICT and PE students from Years 12 and 13 made the trip to the School of Law and Business at the University of the West of England on the 18th January. They were joined by their counterparts from the other 6th Forms in the Lighthouse Schools Partnership (Gordano and Backwell). This gave them an opportunity to meet, discuss and work with other students from outside Chew Valley School. During the morning they participated in a variety of lectures and workshops which, not only gave them a taste of what university life would be like, but also gave them an invaluable insight to help them with their studies and personal development. Workshops were delivered on Self Leadership, Working in Teams and Entrepreneurship. The afternoon saw a presentation by Bob Reeves, who is the Director of the foundation for Leadership through Sport, on leadership. He was joined by the South African and Bristol Bears Rugby Union Star, Nick Fenton-Wells who delivered a truly inspiring and thought provoking lecture on leadership with plenty of audience participation! Mrs Gardiner

London GCSE Art Trip Year 11 GCSE Art students and teachers filled a Filers 53 seater and journeyed to the Capital to soak up some of the city’s terrific sights and contemplate some contemporary Art at Tate Modern. Students armed with sketchbooks and cameras descended on the venerated Gallery and tried to match some examples of the art / artists practice with their chosen topic for the new GCSE Art paper. The trip was most successful with all seeming to find first hand source material that would further and strengthen their enjoyment and understanding of the subject and their exam practical prospect. Mr O’Connell

Florence and the nice place with the bridges and canals Another successful, informative and generally magnificent trip was had by a group of Chew Valley 6th Formers and Art Department staff. A Level Art and Photography students from years 12 and 13 braved a chilly Italian climate to absorb and be wowed by the sumptuous Florence, with its magnificent colours, awe inspiring architecture and Art. A group of 21 students travelled to Tuscany and visited the Uffizi Gallery and the well-trod sites of Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio, Florence Duomo Cathedral and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna. The group then sped up the boot in a fine red locomotive to the gorgeousness that is Venice. Students spent the day drawing, sketching and photographing all they saw in the city. A Goldilocks’ porridge perfect day for temperature, bustle and camera light excellence. All agreed the material gathered would be invaluable in a young artist’s development, and the staff quite enjoyed it too. As well as much work being produced on the trips to cultural Italy for the exam, we also held a photographic competition and the following results ensued. Mr O’Connell

Very privileged to introduce Katharine Viner The Sixth Form recently played host to the Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian, Katharine Viner, as part of the ongoing series of guest speakers for the students. For over an hour on Tuesday 12th February, she discussed her experiences in journalism to date, the impact of online innovation upon the nature of news consumption and what a typical day is like editing the third biggest newspaper brand in the world. In addition, Viner also took a wide range of questions from the enthused members of Years 12 and 13, offering careers advice, venturing predictions for the future of print newspapers and tackling the thorny topic of which stories she might ever refuse to run. Before leaving, several students who are hoping to work in the Media were able to have individual conversations and seized the opportunity to pick the brain of The Guardian’s first female editor. It is the first such event that Katharine Viner has done, with staff and students alike suitably inspired by her visit. Mr James

Chew Valley Dance Festival 2019

The Chew Valley Dance Festival returned this month with four sold out performances, featuring dancers from across the Chew Valley. Children from Chew Magna Primary, Chew Stoke Academy, Dundry Primary, East Harptree Primary, Ubley Primary, Cameley Primary and Pensford Primary were welcomed back this year and all wowed audiences with their confident and energetic dances. As always, ‘Chew Valley Dance’ children gave committed performances in Cheer Dance and Street Jazz, expertly choreographed by Fae McIntyre. Over 90 Chew Valley School dancers from Year 7 – 13 performed in all four shows, displaying the impressive results of months of hard work and commitment. Stand out performances included the 7-9 Dance Club: Street Dance mash up, choreographed by Miss Holt, the Year 10 GCSE Dance: Michael Jackson medley, Chew Valley Dance Company’s performance to the title track from the 1980s iconic musical Fame! and a Bob Fosse spectacular by the A level dancers. Audiences were also treated to an array of our talented students’ own choreography pieces, in a variety of dance styles. Praiseworthy solo performances came from Year 10 students Bow Masters, Lucy Payne, Ruby Jones and Henry Hicks and Year 8 students Lucy Mellersh and Isabelle Page and a fantastic group dance was performed by Year 9 students Tia Radforth, Lucy Vowles and Erin Golledge. I am extremely proud of every dancer who took part and was particularly impressed with the professionalism and confidence that was on display. I would like to extend a big thank you to all of the staff and students involved in making the festival such a huge success. Mrs Loynton

Jaguar 4x4 Regional finals Two teams competed in the Jaguar 4x4 Regional finals in January at the Flybe Training Academy in Exeter. Dedicating their lunch times and after school, to getting their cars up and running, arrange their pit displays and working on their design portfolios and presentations, it was great to see both teams picking up awards. Well-deserved for all their hard work and effort. Origin (Daisy Bristow, Callum Smith, Nick Scadding, Ben Angell, Reece Lenthall and Guy Denning-Southern) won the award for sponsorship and marketing. Alpha Engineering (George Sealy, Eddie Heath, James Williams, Jamie Dale and Zac Head) won the award for best verbal presentation. Both teams are a credit to Chew Valley School. Mrs Ashman
