ALL ABOUT
Carpe Noctem [’kar-pe-’nok-tem] means “seize the night” in Latin. This Arts Week, we want you to seize the night by embracing your creative side. Working with different talented Tembusians, Arts Interest Groups and special guests, we present to you a week of jam-packed activites that will expose you to the Arts. We hope that this Arts Week, you immerse yourself in the myriad of workshops lined up and experience the Arts like never before. Be sure to head down to the Multi Purpose Hall on 10 October for our signature Finale Night, filled with exciting performances and activities just for you.

D1: 8 OCT 2019 Bachata Dance Introductory Workshop by Sylvain and Kane 7pm - 8pm | MPH Bachata is a Latin social street dance, close to salsa and originated in the Dominican Republic. It evolved from Bolero and was influenced by many other musics such as son, ranchera, and merengue. In the workshop, you will learn the basics in partner dance. No experience needed! Come on down with your friends for an evening of sensuality and dance!
Student’s Tea: Tan Peng Sing (M1LDL1FE) by Denise Lim 7pm - 8pm | Common Lounge “Huh local indie bands? I only listen to Sam Willows leh..” Always wanted to expand your music taste? Don’t worry, the guitarist of M1LDL1FE, Peng Sing, is here! Peng Sing also runs an indie music label that works with local artistes, comprising of LEW, Joie Tan, Astronauts, etc. With Peng Sing’s rich insights, he’ll share his journey in the music industry from a musician’s perspective.

D1: 8 OCT 2019 3D Chalk Art Workshop by Rudy Kistler and Dr Margaret 7pm - 9pm | SR5 Rudy Kistler graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago before flying to Australia and undertook his Master of Fine Arts in Painting, in 2004. Rudy specialises in complex 3D illusions, murals and impressionist-influenced studio artworks. He brings his life experiences to his art and he loves running workshops for budding young artists. Come join Rudy as he walks us through the basics of 3D Art and Design!
Lyrical Contemporary Dance Workshop by TRDO’s Wen Hui and T-Crews 8pm - 9pm | MPH Wenhui started dancing at the age of 15 and has been trained under instructors like Ryan Tan, Clarice Ng and Peter Teo. She enjoys incorporating floorwork into her choreographies. As a company dancer and a faculty member of TRDO, as well as the resident instructor of SP Strictly Dance Zone, be sure to head down to the MPH and enjoy the beautiful choreography!

D1: 8 OCT 2019 Abbey Experience by Tembusu Arts Council 8pm - 11pm | Abbey We all love a good night with music, put up by our talented peers! Instead of our usual Lobby Experience, Tembusu Arts Council has decided to have a cosy intimate session in the Abbey instead. So bring your friends and be mesmerised by Tembusians!
Malay Dance Workshop by NUS Ilsa Tari and tTarik 9pm - 10pm | MPH A collaboration between tTarik and NUS Ilsa Tari to provide exposure of our Malay culture to Tembusians through the most inviting way possible, Dance. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t tried Malay Dance before, here’s your chance! Come learn the basics of Malay Dance and try a new art form at the MPH.

D2: 9 OCT 2019 Contemporary Dance Workshop by Coco Yau 6pm - 7:30pm | MPH An introductory lesson to contemporary dance, where the stigma of it being “emo” or “technical” is being broken! This workshop will bring you through the basics of contemporary dance, and teach you some fundamental contemporary movements. There’s no need to fear - you’ll be learning a fun contemporary choreography at the end alongside everyone in the class. Come and experience the joy of contemporary dance for yourselves!
Student’s Tea: Christopher Sim by Denise Lim 7pm - 8pm | Reading Room While many may know him through his work for the independent music industry; Christopher Sim, AKA @zalindrome, is also a working photographer. Focusing on youth culture in Singapore, his work hints at narratives through intimate documentary photography, capturing the essence of nostalgia through candid interactions. Come learn more about Chris’ magic behind the camera!

D2: 9 OCT 2019 Drawing Human Anatomy 4 Dummies by Seah Jaye Young 7pm - 9pm | SR4 Through this mini-tutorial, you’ll learn simple, key sketching foundations of the commonly drawn parts of our anatomy (face, arms, feet, body, etc). With a step-by-step walkthrough and comics for reference, it’s only a matter of time (and practice) till you realise your inner Leonardo Da Vinci! Oh, did we mention that there will be a studyguide provided by the tutor himself?
Student’s Tea: Marylyn Tan by tWord & SpeQtrum@tFreedom 7:30pm - 9pm | Common Lounge tWord and SpeQtrum@tFreedom is proud to invite Marylyn Tan, author of the poetry collection “GAZE BACK”. Marylyn’s poetics are at the mind-numbing intersections of queer feminism, catholicism, witchcraft, south-east asian mythos, and programming syntax. If that is enough to tingle your interest in the occult arts, come on down to hear all about it!

D2: 9 OCT 2019 Ice Dye Tote Bag Workshop by tArt 8pm - 10pm | Blank Canvas Ice makes a lot of great things. Ice cream, iced tea, ice skating, ice in our glacie- Ice also makes dyeing fabrics a fun and interesting process! Ever wonder how to achieve watercolour effects with dye? Come down for our chill session and leave with a cool new tote bag! *if you have a thermos, please fill it up with ice before coming so we can ensure there’s enough ice for everyone :-)
Light Painting Workshop by tStudios 9pm - 10pm | SR3 Explore the intersection of arts and technology in the 13th iteration of tStudios’ Light Painting Workshop! The various light-emitting tools and tStudios’ professional-grade equipment along with your creative mind will allow your paintings to come to life! The possibilities to create are endless; let your imagination run wild as you come up with different ways to utilise light to create various special effects!

D2: 9 OCT 2019 A Singer Prepares - Vocal Workshop by Benjamin Harris 9pm - 10pm | Abbey How does being open, both physically and mentally allow a singer to more authentically communicate through song? Join Benjamin and embark on a series of vocal workshops to empower budding singers to be more aware of their instruments. Benjamin will introduce some of Stanislavsky acting techniques to allow participants to sing more emotively and authentically.

D3: 10 OCT 2019 Music of the Night by Transposition and tGuitar 7pm - 7:30pm | Common Lounge Transposition and tGuitar will be putting up a joint musical fiesta. Come down for an enjoyable time as we stimulate your senses with our fine luscious tunes. We will be playing from a range of genres including Classical, Studio Ghibli and Contemporary Pop.
Carpe Noctem Finale Night by Tembusu Arts Council 7:30pm - 11pm | MPH It’s that time of the semester again - Arts Week’s Finale Night! This time, we’ll be transforming the MPH into a beautiful retro funk wonderland, filled with decorations of your favourite arcade games. We’ve also lined up a series of performers by our talented Tembusians and set up booths for you to engage in interesting art activities! Psst, did we mention we’re engaging a Jagua Tattoo artist for this special occasion?

D3: 10 OCT 2019 Shrink Charms Workshop by Yarn and Doodles 8pm - 10pm | Blank Canvas Ever wanted your very own customised keychain? Create your very own shrink charm with Yarn and Doodles this Arts Week! Shrink charms are made from plastic sheets that are drawn on with markers. The sheets melt and shrink when baked, to create a cute keychain. Come express your creativity with us!
Film Screening: Akira by Filmbusu 10pm - 12am | Atlas Set in a dystopian 2019, Akira tells the story of Shotaro Kaneda, a leader of a local biker gang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires incredible telekinetic abilities after a motorcycle accident, eventually threatening an entire military complex amidst chaos and rebellion in the sprawling futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo.

D4: 11 OCT 2019 Augmented Reality Art Making by Dan Tran 6pm - 8pm | Blank Canvas This workshop aims to explore the creative capacity of augmented reality (AR) technology - the blending between interactive digital elements with real-life environment - in art making. Using inspirations from modern art such as Pollock’s drip paintings and Dadaist collage in conjunction with new media, you are promised an original AR artwork, and more importantly two hours of fun artistic experimentation.
Dance Therapy Workshop by Tilda Yeow and LoveTembusu 6pm - 8pm | MPH In conjunction with World Mental Health Day, we will be inviting Ms Tilda Yeow down to offer therapy for mental and emotional wellbeing through dance. Ms Tilda specialises in conducting Dance Movement Psychotherapy sessions for adults and facilitates a safe space for dance therapy. The theme, “Emotions in Motion” focuses on enabling students to explore and express their emotions through body movements.

D4: 11 OCT 2019 Blackout Poetry Workshop by Curios and tWord 7:30pm - 9pm | SR6 Ever wanted to try poetry, but afraid of being unable to conjure words and permute on the page? Fret not! Curios and tWord jointly present to you our Carpe Noctem special workshop, Blackout Poetry! In this chill session, with nothing more than a black ink marker, we be transforming some of our favourite printed literary texts into words that tell their own unique story! Come and join us for an evening of reimagining with some dark (ink) magic!
Jazz with tJazz by tJazz 8PM to 9PM | Abbey tJazz will be holding an introductory workshop to the world of jazz! We’ll be touching a bit on basic Jazzology, which includes jazz rhythm, chord progressions and improvisation. As long as you have the groove, this workshop is for you! And don’t worry, we welcome all musicians and even non-musical folks who are simply jazz-curious.

D4: 11 OCT 2019 Speakeasy: Prohibition-Era Mixology Workshop by Zachary Tan 8pm - 10pm | Box Office What do Al Capone and alcohol have in common? Psst, being illegal in 1920s America was one. Prohibition in the United States may have banned liquor, but spirits flowed freely in the back alleys, speakeasies, and countrysides of America. In fact, many of the best cocktails came out of and survived those dry years. We will be exploring just three Prohibition classics - the Gin Rickey, the SouthSide and the Old Fashioned.

Renee Ting will be here to share with you about her journey as the founding director of Singapore Art Book Fair (SGABF), as well as her insights about the creative industry in Singapore.
