Food Distribution Store expands with new location in Clinton, OK By Latoya Lonelodge, Staff Reporter

The newly established Food Distribution Store (FDS) located in Clinton, Okla. is the beginning of expanding food services in the Cheyenne and Arapaho service area. The goal is to help and service people throughout different areas outside the home site of Watonga, Okla., where the primary FDS is located, Food Distribution Coordinator Keith Lime said, “The primary goal for Food Distribution is to get the food to whoevers qualified to get the food package. I know on the outside that it’s hard to maintain life, your lifestyle, and to stay afloat in the time that we’re in,” Lime said. If you’re able to qualify with the guidelines that we offer and if you’re unqualified on SNAP (Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program), with a CDIB at Food Distribution, you could be eligible for food benefits without coming out of pocket to stay afloat in whatever you have going on in life.” Food Distribution serves to assist the youth and families with food assistance to enable healthier lifestyles. They provide foods to low-income households on the reservation or in designated areas within the state of Oklahoma. The new FDS is located at the old Smoke Shop in Clinton. The process first started in 2014 and has since progressed its way to a newly remodeled store location in 2016. Due to the number of people who need services within the Food Distribution, limited staff has become a challenge due to the expansion of services needed among the communities. “Due to the numbers and our staffing, its hard to be in two

spots at once,” Lime said. One of the primary benefitting factors that Food Distribution services is tailgating. Food Distribution currently holds tailgates as a placement for individuals who are unable to travel to the Watonga FDS location. The Food Distribution tailgates are conducted in areas such as Clinton, Hammon, Seiling and Elk City. “Tailgates are for the food distribution out of Watonga, we load up a box truck full of about 90 percent of the foods of what we have on hand. We try to take them out to different towns, less than 10,000 population towns are approved to get the food package. We get to go out to these locations and serve our same services out of the truck in a private environment,” Lime said. Two tailgates were held at the Clinton location for the month of February. For the month of March, Clinton FDS will be able to determine how many people they can service with their current staff at the new store location. “For March we can get a better idea of how many people we can see in a day because when we did our first tailgates in February our average people off of tailgate trucks were about 30 people each tailgate. So it’s going to be a little different,” Lime said. Food Distribution is currently federally funded through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). USDA’s primary goal is to benefit the health of others and help assist with those who have limited means to put food on the table.

While the Watonga Food Distribution store serves within the area, there are challenges in which tribal members face traveling to the store in outside areas. Some of those challenges being without a car and unable to get to their destination to where the food store is located. Lime said that Woodward or El Reno currently could not receive food packages because they are exceeding the 10,000-limit population. “I know there’s a lot of CDIB members who could use the benefits but due to the guidelines we can’t. We can go around El Reno, we can go around Woodward but we can’t go inside the city limits,” Lime said. Locations are mainly based upon needs and the population. For the future of FDS expansion, progress begins with adjusting to the new Clinton store location. “We’re trying to get adjusted to the volume because the volume, the participation, the warehouse part, is still trying to get adjusted to how much food we need everyday. It’s still a learning process but I don’t see anything stopping as far as we can service outside of the building,” Lime said. By closely monitoring progress, Lime said, “Once we watch this close monitoring, we get to say, ‘okay Food Distribution can handle the store, the second location, all with current staff, we want to hopefully waiver Woodward or El Reno to get them in the lines of receiving the package.” For more information on the Food Distribution Program call toll free 888-747-9520.

Community homebuyer meetings begin in Concho By Latoya Lonelodge Staff Reporter

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Housing Department (CAHD) held their annual homebuyer community meeting at the Concho Community Center in Concho, Okla., on Feb. 24. Tribal members were encouraged to participate in the meeting if they currently own a house or are planning on becoming a homebuyer. Information pertaining to the upkeep of homes were given, such as simple home repair fixtures. Debra All-Runner, resident coordinator, said the main concern with CAHD is making sure tribal members are maintaining their homes and keeping their homes up-todate. “We try to help them be more aware and teach them how to repair their own homes. Spirit Charter signed by Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes and neighboring El Reno Public Schools By Rosemary Stephens Editor-in-Chief

While most schools are being pressured by Native American activists to change school mascot names depicting Native American names and or symbols, El Reno Public Schools (ERPS) in El Reno, Okla. is embracing their beloved Indian mascot name and Chief’s head logo. With the support and endorsement of ERPS’s neighbors, Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, the two entities joined together to create the ‘Spirit Charter of El Reno Public Schools,’ being signed into effect on Feb. 13, 2017. Written within the charter under the sub-heading El Reno Mascot: The Indian, it reads, “The Indian, the El Reno mascot was chosen during the 1924-25 school year as a symbol of pride and respect for the strength and perseverance that Native people represent. The symbol of ‘standing tall on the western prairie’ is both a Native trait and a vision that the El Reno Public School system wished to instill in its students and staff.” In a recent video posted on the ERPS website, Cheyenne and Arapaho student athlete Allen Sioux said, “Being an El Reno Indian whether it’s being on the basketball team, in the classroom at school or just at a fun event we help and rely on each other. We have a lot of Native Americans on the team (basketball), but when there’s all five Native Americans on the court a lot of people recognize that and show love.” The charter states ERPS began educating students in 1891, meeting in the El Reno Opera House. The first school building was constructed in 1892, consisting of small two-room buildings. One was located on the 600 block of South Rock Island for white students and one on North Barker for black students. The first El Reno graduate was Nellie Jensen in 1896. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The school’s population has remained steady at approximately 2,500 students from the 1930s through today, with the current enrollment number of 2,750. “I think it’s a compliment to our people, and a compliment

to Native Americans in general,” Cheyenne & Arapaho Lt. Gov. Cornell Sankey stated on the video. “I know today there is a conflict of people thinking, well they’re making fun of us versus honoring us, but I think with El Reno asking us to be included and involved with how we move forward with this spirit charter, it says a lot on the behalf of El Reno and the school system.” After the release of the video depicting the spirit charter on social media, comments were mixed. One individual stated, “I’m a 4/4 Native and do not feel we should be used as a mascot. It’s demeaning and disrespectful. We are being talked about in the past tense.” Another comment read, “I showed this to my afternoon classes today. They said they were very proud to be El Reno Indians. Especially my Native students,” and another comment read, “D--- no wonder you guys are so far behind … lots of love and pride in video (which is cool) but you all are overlooking the major issue here. The NCAI (National Congress of American Indians) maintains that teams with mascots such as the Braves and the R------s perpetuate negative stereotypes of Native American people, and demean their Native traditions and rituals, often citing a long held myth by non-native people that ‘Indian’ mascots ‘honor Native people.’” Read the full text of the Spirit Charter of El Reno Public Schools in its entirety, visit www.facebook.com/elrenops.

Water Is Life: The Story of Standing Rock Won’t Go Away The Dakota Access pipeline is set and oil will flow. But this is not the only fight about water, and Standing Rock is only one chapter somewhere in the middle of a long story.

By Mark Trahant, YES! Magazine Every day I write rhymes on Twitter. I get a kick out of reducing complicated ideas and events down to 140 characters. So on February 23 I wrote: Powers That Be think it’s the end DAPL will now have much money to spend But Standing Rock is a rally cry Rebalance our world before we die And that is the story I want to tell. Standing Rock is only one chapter somewhere in the middle of a long story. It’s true that North Dakota used the power of the state this week to march into the camps along the Missouri River and round up the remaining water protectors. But think about that story: A few dozen people were arrested at camps where more than 10,000 people once said no to the Dakota Access pipeline. That people power did not evaporate. Even today more people, tens of thousands, perhaps millions, are still a part of that effort via social media and through direct action. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe and its allies have been repeating the same story for more than a year: Mni wiconi (water is life). This is a narrative that the state of North Dakota, the pipeline company, and the oil industry could not counter, despite spending millions of dollars and advancing into Great Sioux treaty lands with a law enforcement army. The chief executive of the company behind the Dakota Access pipeline told investors on Thursday that he “underestimated the power of social media,” where stories spread so rapidly. According to Bloomberg News, Kelcy Warren complained: “There was no way we can defend ourselves.” (Actually, there was a way: Many energy companies have figured out that it’s far better to work with communities than to roll over them.) The point is that the company and the state lost the narrative. But then, “lost” might not be the right word. The company was in a rush to build and North Dakota made the story more compelling by acting against its own interest. Think about what story we’d be telling now if the North Dakota governor spent the first few weeks listening to the community and exploring alternatives. No one would have turned the page to see what happened next. No drama. Instead, the county sheriff took center stage playing a villain. In August, Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier arrested Standing Rock Chairman David Archambault II and the plot raced ahead

to a military occupation, a company line to defend, and a global audience via social media. Lots of drama. Now the pipeline is set and oil will flow. Perhaps in a few days. So the thinking of the company is that it’s all over. They won. But this is not the only fight about water. There are now hundreds of scenes spread across North America. The protection of water, the rebalancing of the world, now has a symbol and a memory to carry that story forward. Every pipeline project that’s planned across North America will have to defend itself in every community, on social media, and with investors. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe hopes supporters on March 10 will march and pray in Washington, D.C. The tribe asks people to “rise in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples of the world whose rights protect Unci Maka (Grandmother Earth) for the future generations of all.” I think people will go. And by the thousands. Standing Rock is the call to action. The White House tried to rewrite the story Thursday. Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters at the daily briefing that the White House is “constantly in touch with” the Standing Rock Sioux. The idea here, which has been brewing for a while, is to cast the tribe as a partner of the state. The tribe immediately called out that statement as false. Archambault said in a news release: “We repeatedly asked for meetings with the Trump administration, but never received one until the day they notified Congress that they were issuing the easement. I was on a plane to Washington, D.C., when the easement was issued. It was an insult to me and to the Tribe. I cancelled the meeting upon hearing this news. We have since filed a lawsuit for the immoral and illegal issuance of the easement and suspension of the environmental impact study.” This lie from the White House is revealing: The Trump administration (and its allies in the oil industry and North Dakota) understands that this story is not over. They want their narrative back. And that’s not going to happen. How could it? We all know water is life. Mark Trahant wrote this article for YES! Magazine. Mark is the Charles R. Tensions continue to simmer as the Dakota Access Pipeline becomes more of a reality with every passing day

The wealthy backers of the project are within weeks of completing the final portion in North Dakota. Oil could be flowing even before the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe are heard fully in federal court, their last avenue of hope now that President Donald Trump has turned his back on them without once engaging in government-to-government consultation. The latest sign of the dramatic disconnect came directly from the White House on Thursday. Press secretary Sean Spicer claimed the new administration has been in “constant contact” with Standing Rock and North Dakota’s governor. “Our team has been involved with both the tribe and the governor there, and so we are not only, we are constantly in touch with them,” Spicer said during his daily press briefing. “And I think we feel very confident that we will move forward to get the pipeline moving. And so we’ll have a further update on that, but I think we’re in constant contact with the officials there.” But tribal leaders have strongly disputed the alternative characterization. Neither Standing Rock nor Cheyenne River were consulted when the Republican regime in Washington, barely three weeks after Trump took office, approved the pipeline without completing an environmental review. “Spicer claimed that the Trump administration has been ‘constantly’ in contact with our tribe. That claim is absolutely false,” Chairman Dave Archambault II from Standing Rock said in a statement on Thursday. “We repeatedly asked for meetings with the Trump administration, but nev-

er received one until the day they notified Congress that they were issuing the easement,” Archambault continued as he relayed a now familiar story of being slighted by the White House. “I was on a plane to Washington, D.C. when the easement was issued. It was an insult to me and to the tribe.” Chairman Harold Frazier from Cheyenne River shared a similar experience in a sworn declaration submitted in court this week. He said the Trump administration never responded to his requests for consultation before approving the pipeline even as the Army Corps sought his assistance in clearing the #NoDAPL encampment. “The United States Army Corps of Engineers’ approval of the Dakota Access Pipeline is a clear case of allowing the fox to run the henhouse,” the tribe said in an accompanying 56-page brief that seeks to overturn the pipeline’s approval. The two tribes are due back in court next week for arguments on a preliminary injunction against the pipeline. Additionally, both tribes are seeking summary judgment in hopes of setting aside the easement that the Army Corps granted to Dakota Access earlier this month. The easement allows the firm to drill under the Missouri River and finish the 1,172-mile pipeline. According to a status update filed in court, work could be completed as early as March 6. Standing Rock leaders are preparing for Native Nations Rise in Washington. The event includes a symbolic camp near the Washington Monument starting on March 7 and concludes wit a march to the White House on March 10..

DIABETES

March Is National Nutrition Month

What is nutrition? Nutrition is the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism (humans). It includes food intake, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism and excretion. The diet of an organism is what it eats, which is largely determined by the availability, the processing and palatability of foods. A healthy diet includes preparation of food and storage methods that preserve nutrients from oxidation, heat or leaching and that reduces the risk of foodborne illnesses. A poor diet may cause health problems, causing deficiency diseases such as blindness, anemia, scurvy, preterm birth, stillbirth, health threatening conditions like obesity and metabolic syndrome and such common chronic systemic disease as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. Nutrition is the intake of food, considered in relation to the body’s dietary needs. Good nutrition-an adequate, well balanced diet combined with regular

physical activity- is a cornerstone of good health. Poor nutrition can lead to reduced immunity, increased susceptibility to disease, impaired physical and mental development and reduced productivity. To have complete nutrition we need both macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients. Macro-nutrients are needed in large amounts like carbohydrates, dietary fiber, fats, protein and water. The macronutrients (excluding fiber and water) provide structural materials (amino acids from which proteins are built and lipids form which cell membrane and some signaling molecules are built) and energy. These structural materials can be used to generate energy. Micro-nutrients are needed in smaller amounts and include minerals, vitamins and others. Dietary minerals are inorganic chemical elements required by all living organisms. Minerals include macro and micro minerals. Macro minerals are Calcium, chlorine, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and sulfur. Micro minerals (Trace)include cobalt, copper, chromium, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, seleni-

um, and zinc. What do all these nutrients do and why is it important? To be continued….. In celebration of March’s National Nutrition Month, we will play nutrition question of the day for daily prizes and a grand prize awarded at the end. A daily email will go out with a nutrition question. If you answer the question correctly, then you will be placed in a daily drawing for a prize. Each time you answer correctly, your name will be placed in the daily drawing and then the monthly drawing, the more you play the more chances you have to win. If you play every day, all month you will be eligible for a participation prize. Remember you can’t win if you don’t play. The grand prize will be a Fitbit HR! NYPD Camp is around the corner, June 12-16, 2017, space is limited to 10 participants. See flyer for more information. For more information and tips on eating contact Tara Conway at Diabetes Wellness Program 405-422-7685 or tconway@c-a-tribes.org.

Eyre joins IAIA continued from pg. 1

Eyre’s expertise in producing and directing media content centers around his love of storytelling and humanity. His first film was the Sundance Film Festival and Miramax Films Smoke Signals (1998). Smoke Signals was noted as the first feature film written, directed and produced by Native Americans to receive a national theatrical release. Smoke Signals earned Eyre many prestigious awards including the Sundance Film Festivals’ “Audience Award” and the Sundance Film Festival’s “Filmmaker’s Trophy.” Eyre’s second film, Skins (2002) earned its star Graham Green many awards, and People Magazine called Eyre “the pre-eminent Native American filmmaker of his time.” Roger Ebert’s review stated, “Skins has one of the most haunting endings he has seen. Two-Thumbs Up!” In 2012, Eyre became the Chair of The Film School at Santa Fe University of Art and Design in Santa Fe, N.M. After re-designing and growing student enrollment

at the university, he resigned in 2016 to pursue filmmaking on a full-time basis once again. Alongside Terrance Malick and Natalie Portman, Eyre served as executive producer for the documentary feature film, The Seventh Fire (2016). The Seventh Fire premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and he was invited to screen the film at The White House (March 2016). The Seventh Fire opened in New York City, Los Angeles, and other cities around the country in July 2016. Eyre serves on advisory boards for the Governor’s Council on Film and Television for the state of New Mexico, the Greater Santa Fe Film Commission and the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival. He has served on numerous film festival juries including the Sundance Film Festival, the Tribeca Film Festival and VisonMaker Media Film Festival. Eyre holds an MFA from New York University and a BFA from the University of Arizona.

VETERAN’S CORNER

The Cheyenne & Arapaho Veteran’s Office is seeking the help of the general public in identifying homeless tribal veterans in our service area or even outside our service area. There are two very good programs that we can plug the veteran into and see if they fit the criteria. One is the Tribal HUDVASH program, which is now ready to accept applicants that may qualify. This program will provide rental assistance and supportive services to Native American Veterans that are homeless or at risk of homelessness living in Canadian, Blaine, and Custer counties. The second program is Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF). The goal of the SSVF program is to promote housing stability among very low-income Veteran families who reside in or are transitioning to permanent housing. There are more resourc-

es we are tapping into and trying to fit our tribal veterans into if they do not meet any of these two programs guidelines. Call the Office of Veterans Affairs (OVA) if you are in need of assistance with the VA medical center, in need of opening up a service connected claim, need information on how to qualify for a free veteran’s Tribal ID card or anything veteran related. Please don’t hesitate to give our office a call. OVA will be conducting outreach in the service areas along with other tribal programs such as HOPE, LIHEAP and Eldercare. Be on the look-out for when we will be in your area. Our office will need a copy of your DD-214 to start services. If you need assistance in requesting one from the National Archives we can assist you with getting one. OVA can be reached at 405-422-7724 or by email ing Russell Willey, lwilley@c-a-tribes.org.

HELP ME FIND MY MOTHER’S PICTURE It’s been 60 years My name is Alex J. Stone, my Cheyenne name is Mis-sauk. I was raised mostly in boarding school beginning in 1960. That was the year that my mother ‘walked on.’ My sister Lillian and I were placed in the old Cheyenne and Arapaho school, which is no longer there. I went to Chilocco and graduated in 1968 and then to Haskell. I was drafted out of Haskell and went into the army. I live in the great northwest (Portland, Ore.) and have never returned to Cheyenne country except for an occasional visit or funeral. My father died while I was serving in Viet Nam in 1970. After returning home I have buried all of my siblings and I am the only one left. I’m looking for help. Someone who can help me find a photograph of my mother Lucy Mae Big Eagle-Stone. My father was Amos ‘Duke’ Stone. I have been looking for any photos since 1962. I really don’t remember what they look like and the photos would really help. I could show them to my children and granddaughter. All my elder relatives (aunties and uncles) are gone. I remember stories of my parents that were told to me by my mom’s sister, Eula Hill. After my mom’s passing I called my aunties mom. What I have gone through is something I do not wish on any other Indian boarding school students, especially those who had to be taken away at a very young age. I was 9 years old when I was taken away. If there is anyone out there who can help me, please write or call me at: Alex J. Stone, 3626 NE 157th Avenue, Portland, OR 97230 or call 503-2870107.

There have been a lot of deaths with younger tribal members. This was a very heartfelt article that affects all Native American tribes. I just wanted to pass this. Thank you. Interview/Photo by Latoya Lonelodge From Weatherford, Okla., Robert Sleeper Jr. has big dreams of his team winning state in his senior year of basketball. Standing at 6’2, Robert is a forward for the Riverside Indian School Braves. With the season’s regular games at an end, the Braves won districts and began playing in regionals against Hennessey High School on Thursday, Feb. 23. Sleeper’s dream is a step closer to competing in the state championship. When did you first begin playing and how? I started playing basketball in the 8th grade, we always used to play at the park and I never played for the school until my junior year at Weatherford and then I transferred here and now I’m playing. What is it about the sport that you love the best? Just the communication that the team has and the chemistry. What has been your biggest accomplishment in the sport so far? Having a 21-season because in Weatherford we never won that many games so for me it means just having a 21-season is good. What is your biggest accomplishment in the classroom so far? Being student of the month. What is your GPA (if known)? 2.67 What goals have you set for yourself in sports, school? Just to play college ball and I’m going to try to go to an Ivy league school. What actions are you taking to reach these goals? In school, I’m just trying to keep my grades up and get a higher GPA and in sports I’m just trying to work my hardest and do what the coach says. As police evict water protectors, tribes vow to continue the fight “This isn’t the end by any means. This is the spark. The whole world is waking up now.” By Jenni Monet On Thursday, as North Dakota police moved in with a fleet of bulldozers, Humvees, and armored MRAP vehicles, Gov. Doug Burgum signed into law four bills that would bring harsher punishment for protest-related activity in the state. The bills, his press statement said, were meant to protect landowners’ rights. But for the 46 people arrested that day, their stand was about defending historic treaty territory. “We’ve always been around this river, and that’s why we’re here to protect this river,” said Harold Frazier, chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, the sister nation to Standing Rock. “That river brings life to the people.” Frazier has become a vocal supporter in the ongoing yet shifting movement to stop the Dakota Access pipeline. Despite Thursday’s razing of the main demonstration camp, Oceti Sakowin, he and dozens of water protectors, or protesters, have vowed to continue the fight to guard the Missouri River from a potential oil spill, if and when the pipeline is completed. As police slashed teepee-like structures open and arrested peaceful resisters, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer signaled that the $3.8 billion energy project was on its way to completion. “We feel very confident we will get the pipeline moving,” said Spicer. Less than a week after taking office, President Donald J. Trump advanced the Dakota Access pipeline through an executive memorandum. It’s unclear whether he still owns stock in the energy project. Staffers claim he

relinquished his investment, yet no evidence has been produced to substantiate these claims. Meanwhile, the CEO of Energy Transfer Partners, the operator of the pipeline, had donated more than $100,000 to Trump’s presidential campaign. With this knowledge, some water protectors say they knew this day would come. “This isn’t Veterans join the last few remaining residents of the #NoDAPL encampment in North Dakota as they were evicted during the end by the fourth week of February 2017.
