INDIE GUESTROOMS The design of the guestrooms at “Indie” are inspired by the movement of music. A metallic gold light feature with linear cut-outs along the ceiling and walls are inspired by the neck of a guitar. While the carpet featured in the room also mimics the vibration of the guitar strings. The contrasting colors scheme used in the guestroom is inspired by the variety of colors from flashing lights used at music festivals and the metallicas are taken from the instrument and equipment used by the performers.

14

NOTES Linear cut-outs along the ceiling and walls create a custom light fixture that is used as task lighting. Beds have a closed frame for sanitary reasons and guests do not lose items underneath the beds. Custom wallcovering is located behind headboards.

PROJECT REQUIREMENT: Custom Wallcovering. Vibration wallcovering design is inspired by the movement of sound waves. The color scheme is derived from the rapidly changing lights of all the colors that add to the excitement of live concerts. This wallcovering uses pulsing organic curves to mimic the look of sound vibrations off of musical instruments. The design of this wallcovering encompasses the feel of music.

15

NOTES Contrasting colors create visual interest in the space and a energetic atmosphere.

Down the back hallway on the main floor of Indie, guests will find Soul Seller Records. The design was inspired by the unpredictable sound that is heard when listening to a vinyl record. The ceiling detail was inspired by the spinning of the record, while the wallcovering features an interesting texture much like the grooves on a vinyl. Natural wood allows modern to mix with vintage, to pull in that at Soul Seller Records, guests can experience any genre of music.

26

NOTES Guests use the enormous mural along the hall as signage to get to Soul Seller Record store. The immense light fixture brings more attention the ceiling detail above. Multiple types of storage and display areas create movement throughout the space.

STUDIO III / INDIVIDUAL PROJECT FALL 2014 OBJECT The object of this project is to design a 8,000 square foot restaurant in an assigned country. The country should be researched for cultural design considerations and as inspiration for the name and brand of the restaurant. The space should reflect the created brand and consider the culture’s etiquette, design motifs, food. etc.

CONCEPT Shijima sits in the heart of Furano, Japan and provides the perfect atmosphere for energetic, as well as soothing gatherings. The design concept is the four main islands of Japan, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu, so guests can enjoy the visual identity for each island in one location.

Shijima CULTURAL DIFFERENCES Majority of restaurants provide western style table and chairs, while some still use traditional where you sit on a pillow on the oor. Restaurants are crucial to business people. Drinking is a group activity.

SOLUTION Playing off four islands, the restaurant is divided into four main areas. Each area has unique qualities from the islands and are designed to create an environment encouraging peace, fluidity, and revitalization, while showing sophistication.

STUDIO V / INDIVIDUAL PROJECT FALL 2015 OBJECTIVE Steelcase Student Competition Create a corporate space for entrepreneurs in a career development program to learn and grow their businesses in a professional atmosphere.

CONCEPT NEXT is a co-working organization at the forefront of the shift in how people choose to work today. Individuals use these spaces as starting points for their small businesses. Once they expand, the business spreads out to become even larger. Dandelions do the same thing. They start as seeds embedded in the ground. When the wind blows, the seeds are sent in different directions, becoming part of something much larger. Therefore, dandelions become the concept driving the design of Next’s co-working facility.

PROGRAMMING

2nd floor bubble diagram

1st floor block diagram

2nd floor block diagram

SOLUTION Next’s work environment becomes linear and delicate, with clean lines and brings organic shapes in through the furniture. It embraces openness through minimal use of traditional gypsum board wall construction, substituting them with Steelcase wall solutions to provide a view to the outside from almost anywhere in the building. FF&E selections contribute toward being a LEED Certified facility.

SOFTWARE AutoCad2015, Revit 2015, Illustrator, Photoshop,

RESEARCH Before starting the design phase of the Steelcase Next project, research lead to figuring out that there were four themes that shape the way we work, creative Collaboration, Living on Video, Culture Matters, and Economics of Wellbeing, which also have an effect on the space itself. The right balance of space can help a community and inspire a group to grow. Today, millennials work in many different ways. They are much more diverse in culture, dependent on technology, and want to work when and where they want, with who we want.

42

NOTES Framing the reception desk, are flooring to ceiling decorative columns that mimic the shape of a dandelion, smaller at the bottom like the steam then branching out and tapering like seeds. The floor has acoustical vinyl flooring and the ceiling is suspended gypsum board to help with acoustical properties. Linear LED lighting brings in strong lighting just as the sun does outdoors, and plays off of the straight lines of the stem of a dandelion.

Sweet SENDS Flower & Edible Arrangements Service

PROJECT GOALS ATMOSPHERE

CONCEPT The zinna flower is an American plant of the daisy family that is widely cultivated for its bright showy flowers. They are among the easiest flowers to grow and some of their colors have meanings such as lasting affection, thinking of an absent friend, constancy, goodness, and daily remembrance. With a customer service center that focuses on floral and edible arrangement gift packages, the zinna flower becomes the concept of Sweet Sends.

Create a facility that embraces an energetic atmosphere, where employees look forward to coming to work.

ACHIEVEMENT Give all employees natural light in order to increase productivity.

ACTION Locate the breakroom on the first level to encourage more movement throughout the facility.

CABIN FEVER DESIGN 1

Design multiple ceiling designs for a family that will be featured on a tv series called Cabin Fever. The ceiling is to include corrugated tin and reclaimed wood.

Inspired by a diamond. The angled points are articulated by the wood trusts while the corrugated metal angled in multiple directions makes the light flicker around the room.

CONCEPT The two designs depict an array of ideas merging not only from two types of material, but two places. Throughout the designs, there is a mixture of wood from the forest with corrugated metal, merging natural wood with the modern industrialized world. Concave and convex forms articulated by voids of metal introduce extra dimension while also mimicking the multi levels of tree branches. As light filters through the forest, so will it in the cabin. However, the angles of the corrugated metal will create a radiance unmatched by the trees alone.

STUDIO IV / INDIVIDUAL PROJECT SPRING 2015 OBJECT

Dermatology & Spa

The goal of this project is to increase proficiency in designing for commercial interiors. It focuses on the specific issues of the medical space type and dermatologist office. The project will include two components, a medical office and an adjoining enhanced medical spa.

CONCEPT Sponges are multicellular organisms covered in tiny pores and channels that live in the depths of the ocean floor. The tiny pores on sponges are called ostia. Ostia is an Italian word that means “host” in English, therefore becoming the name and overall concept for the design of a thriving dermatology clinic and spa.

SOLUTION Sponges come in different colors depending on which body of water they live in. Some have more subtle colors, while some are more luminous. They are also have a delicate outer layer, just like skin is delicate to a human. The design of Ostia thrives on the delicate qualities of sponges in its simple design and brings in the colors to create an atmosphere that will leave guest feeling at peace.

dermatologist/spa rendered floor plan

GOALS FUNCTION Exam rooms-should be located in close proximity to nurses station for ease of access. Doctor’s/Nurse’s Office- should be located near the back so they can come and go as they please. Spa/Product Display- should be located before waiting area to promote impulse buys when arriving and leaving.

AESTHETICS The space should create a simple design playing off of the delicate structure of sponges. Subtle colors will be used in the clinic while more luminous colors are used throughout the spa. Water features are placed through the space to create a sense of peace.

SOFTWARE

ATMOSPHERE

Revit 2015, Illustrator, Photoshop,

Both the clinic and spa should create a soothing atmosphere. The space creates a unique experience and leave patients wanting to revisit.

70

NOTES Moderate colors play off the delicate structure of sponges, while water features create a tranquil environment as soon as individuals enter. Dropped ceiling detail with void spaces represent the pores of sponges, while also mimic the floor pattern below which acts as wayfinding. Two front windows allow individuals to converse with the receptionist for paper work or information.

COLOR & LIGHTING FALL 2014 OBJECTIVE

THE CAGE LAMP

3RD PLACE PRODUCT DESIGN WINNER 2015 MSU Student Design Competition

The objective of this project is to design and build a lighting fixture using recycled materials. Students are to demonstrate the best use of design coupled with energy efficient lighting components and use creative skills to build the final operable lighting product.

CONCEPT

conceptual drawing

The rectilinear angles and eco-friendly properties of wood planks drive the overall concept of The Cage Lamp. It is made from warm cedar planks at the top and bottom and wood slates around the edges to create a cage-effect. Gold screws tie in with the inviting color of the cedar, while finishing touches of the silver chain and silver hinges and lock on the bottom bring everything back to the center.
