ell over 100 years after the founding of Notre Dame we are proud to say that our students, just as they did in 1912, receive an education centered on the practices of analytical reading and writing; the exploration of scientific and mathematical thought; the contemplation and examination of theology and religion; an appreciation of art and music; and an understanding of various cultures through the study of foreign language. These subjects have and will continue to be the foundation on which our graduates build during their time at college and throughout their lives.
As you will see in the following pages, the academic areas that have been the hallmarks of a Notre Dame education are constantly being enhanced by the continued introduction of technology across the curriculum. Following the school’s centennial celebration in 2012, the Board of Trustees partnered with the administration and faculty to implement a 1:1 iPad program; upgrade the school’s infrastructure in order to provide fast and reliable Wi-Fi connections; install new touch screen monitors in each class-
room; and remodel the ND computer lab. These enhancements were all a part of the overall goal of providing each student and faculty member with access to the tools they need to further enhance and expand the classroom experience. In the years that have followed our faculty have found new and exciting ways to engage students in meaningful lessons that not only provide this foundation on which our graduates rely but to also prepare them for a world so reliant on technological skills and problem solving. During any given class period a visitor to Notre Dame could walk the halls and see students recording dictations for Spanish class, learning to code in the computer lab, designing and building robots in The Carson Family Science Center or collaborating with their English teacher on an essay using Google Classroom. The ever expanding use and application of technology in our world will continue to present exciting opportunities for our students and faculty as we dive deeper into our strategic effort to provide each Notre Dame student with access to a rigorous technology and design curriculum.
letter from the president Fall 2016 Dear Friends, As our Annual Report marks the end of one school year and the beginning of another, it reminds me that all of us are on pilgrimage during our lifetime. St. Ignatius himself was known as a pilgrim, a person who consciously labored to help God’s kingdom come on this earth. We, too, journey together as pilgrims until we see God face to face. During this summer I was able to go on a special pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. Moments before going into the baths, the volunteer with me asked that I look at the mosaic of Our Lady of Lourdes and remember all my intentions. Know I prayed for you and thanked God and Our Lady of Lourdes for your steadfast support of Notre Dame School. Your support, financial and collaborative, continues to make Chez Nous thrive. Together, we are immersed in the mission of Anne de Xainctonge, educating young women in the faith, helping them develop a personal friendship with God and instilling in them a desire to be of service to those who have less than we do. Simultaneously, we are preparing our students to be leaders in our multicultural and technological society. In the 21st century, education and technology have become seamless partners. Technology is integrated in all we do at Notre Dame.
Beginning in 9th grade with Technology Literacy through a 12th grade class in Robotics and Engineering Design, the girls learn to appreciate the benefits technology brings and to use it wisely. Within individual departments, excitement about learning increases as technology is integrated into daily classes. As you flip through the ensuing pages you will see students engaged in the classical Notre Dame curriculum enhanced by the use of technology by our outstanding faculty. Enjoy our Annual Report. I hope it enlightens you as to what is happening here at ND. We are a community of learners and scholars who are grateful for our blessings each day of our own individual pilgrimages. We are especially grateful to you, our loyal supporters. This past year a record number of alumnae, parents, friends and alumnae parents contributed to The Notre Dame Annual Fund. Please keep up your enthusiastic support and spread the news that the girls are enjoying a Notre Dame education in our Ignatian and Xainctongian tradition that is always being renewed. Gratefully,
Dr. Virginia O’Brien, SU President

letter from the principal Fall 2016 Dear Friends, This year’s Annual Report highlights technology integration at Notre Dame. From its founding, Notre Dame has been committed to learning that is innovative and future-oriented. Back in the 17th century, Anne de Xainctonge may not have been able to predict that our students would be using iPads and our building fully Wi-Fi enabled, but she certainly did set the tone by offering tools of success for young women, including, and especially, those who might not be able to afford such an education otherwise. Anne wanted for girls what boys were already receiving from their Jesuit education, and she wanted to impart a unique charism that would particularly inspire young women as learners and future leaders. Our vision for teaching with technology stems directly from this charism. Today in the 21st century, the world of computer science, coding, technology, science, and engineering can still seem like a boys-only club. Here at Notre Dame, we want to make sure our students graduate with hands-on technology training, perfectly at ease with STEAM subjects, and ready to take their places in this new digital landscape. Notre Dame’s 1:1 iPad program is just one part of our overall technology program. Sure, those iPads enable more personalized and
mobile instruction for our students, but we are also using sophisticated touch-screen TVs in every classroom and adding coding courses for all juniors. What’s more, our emphasis includes the arts (the A in STEAM!). With help from our loyal supporters, we plan to broaden our already first-rate arts program to expand its reach into digital design. Through all this focus on technology, we never forget how important the human touch is in education. Our teachers are our most valuable resource, and we have invested in one-on-one technology coaching for all faculty from the very start. Thanks to resources like Google Classroom, Turnitin.com, and iMovie, Notre Dame teachers are taking their nurturing approach into the online arena. I hope you enjoy perusing this Annual Report, chock full of examples of how technology at Notre Dame can transform instruction while it also preserves and enriches the best traditions of our intimate learning environment. Somehow, I think Anne would take to this new approach and would cheer us on. I hope, through your moral and financial support, you will continue to do the same! With gratitude,
Jaclyn Brilliant Principal

Annual Fund overview and highlights September 1, 2015 through August 31, 2016 All gifts to The Notre Dame Annual Fund directly support each and every bright and deserving student at Notre Dame. Each year, a gap of over $4,000 is created between the amount of tuition and the true cost of educating each student. Contributions to the Annual Fund bridge this gap and relieve budgetary constraints allowing us to provide students with access to scholarship and financial assistance packages as well as experiences and opportunities that prepare them for lives of leadership and service. We are grateful to you, our generous donors who supported the mission of Notre Dame during the 2015-2016 fiscal year. Each one of you, regardless of the size of your gift, played a real and meaningful role in the education of our students. Here are some highlights from the past year: 2% increase in alumnae participation in The Notre Dame Annual Fund. 3% increase in parent participation in The Notre Dame Annual Fund. 90 donors made their first contribution to The Notre Dame Annual Fund. 26 students received scholarships through The Notre Dame Partners and Alumnae Sisters program. 22 foundations contributed over $450,000 in support of Notre Dame. 400 alumnae, friends and parents supported Notre Dame at the 59th Annual Chez Nous Benefit which raised nearly $150,000 in support of the Notre Dame Scholarship Program. 1.1 million dollars in support of Notre Dame was contributed by you, our alumnae, parents and friends.

ouR MiSSion Notre Dame School of Manhattan offers a Catholic education for young women in the tradition of Anne de Xainctonge. Inspired by this 17th Century pioneer in women’s education, Notre Dame promotes academic excellence for girls, an awareness of God in their lives and engagement in the world around them. At Notre Dame in the 21st Century, the school’s small, nurturing environment encourages each student to be open to personal and intellectual growth. The rich cultural, racial and ethnic mosaic of Notre Dame’s community and its urban location enhance global awareness. A challenging curriculum prepares talented young women for college and for lives of leadership and service.

F o R c e S o F n At u R e Ever increasing access to technology provides students In Ms. Donose’s physics lab with the resources they need to conduct complex experiments such as the one shown here. Students measure the momentum of a collision by crashing two dynamic cars together and immediately record their results for analysis and comparison to other groups in the class using Google Classroom. With less time used for collection, students can focus on analysis and the development of conclusions. 5

it All AddS up Apps like Notability, Evernote and Explain Everything allow ninth grade students in Ms. Clarke’s class to take notes that are readily available with the click of button. Students cite that the 1:1 iPad program has helped them stay organized and stay on track as teachers often provide guided notes that students can annotate. The result is less copying and more creating, more practice and more engagement with the content. The 1:1 iPad Program has made it easier than ever for students to share notes and collaborate with each other.

oF couRSe giRlS cAn code Our neighborhood is quickly becoming home to some of the world’s largest tech companies! Our students are hard at work learning skills that could very well have them working for these leaders in tech. In addition to the Girls Who Code after school program, Notre Dame offers a coding course taught by Mr. Lejano. Each 11th grade student learns the computer coding language, Python. In the years to come Notre Dame will continue to add courses in advanced computer coding and digital design in order to prepare students to be technological problem solvers capable of employing the ever changing technological resources available to them. 25
coMing to you live The influx of technology has provided students with the opportunity to not only engage with content but to create! Recording, editing and sharing the results of their research and learning using apps like iMovie and Explain Everything has students taking on the role of director and teacher! Content creation allows students to demonstrate their learning in innovative and interactive ways. Recording also offers students the opportunity to view, reflect on and practice their presentation skills. The collection of videos and presentations become review materials that students can access in preparation for more traditional assessments.

checK it out To activate learning, Ms. Ayinde has the option of starting class with a 10 minute geometry scavenger hunt using iPads. Students are given an initial problem and then must find the answer around the room and scan the corresponding QR Code. Once they scan the code they receive the next problem. Students repeat the process until they have completed each problem. At the completion of the exercise each student automatically receives a list of her results. The lesson that follows builds on the skills used to complete the opening activity. The result is a dynamic, fast-paced activity that challenges the students to collaborate effectively and think critically. 36
