We are honored to present the Anne de Xainctonge Award to

Talya Pinto Santillan ‘95

Anne de Xainctonge Award Talya Pinto Santillan ‘95

Since graduating from Notre Dame nearly 25 years ago, Talya went on to study mechanical engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. She has worked in the consulting engineering field since 1999 designing Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for commercial buildings - with ND’s Air Conditioning project being added to a long list of projects completed during her career! Over the years, Talya has been recognized in her profession and received awards from Professional Women in Construction and Consulting Specifying Engineer Magazine’s 40 Under 40. She has also participated in several panel discussions in her field to improve efficiency and communication within the sector. She has recently been made the first woman Partner at her engineering firm, Kohler Ronan, LLC. Outside of her busy professional career, Talya does her best to balance work and family life. For those of you who are graduates, this can sometimes be as complicated as juggling a week’s worth of ND’s homework in one night! However, she credits a lot of her success to having a husband and two sons who respect and support her for being who she is and has always been — someone who loves the challenge of taking on numerous tasks and finding a way to juggle them all! Imbedded in Talya’s being, much of which she attributes to her days at Notre Dame and her family and Catholic upbringing, is her passion to give back — from tutoring math, to coaching basketball, to mentoring young engineering students, she feels most rewarded by helping and empowering those around her. 9

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Angel Award to

Richard Battaglino P’91 & P’95

10

Chez Nous Angel Award Richard Battaglino P’91 & P‘95

Anyone who knows Richie Battaglino knows he is a proud graduate of Xavier ’67. Richie attended Xavier on scholarship thanks to his native intelligence and Fr. John J. McDonald, SJ, Xavier Headmaster, who gave him both the scholarship and a military uniform. Xavier built Richie’s character and opened his mind to the whole world. Xavier brought the best out of Richie: conscience, commitment, compassion and the ability to do the best one can. Richie’s Xavier background helped him recognize what a great school Notre Dame is. He wanted to help Notre Dame as he has helped Xavier. When Richie’s daughter, Claudia Pinto DeVito ’91, attended Notre Dame, he met Sr. Mary Dolan, SU, who was at the time, Principal of Notre Dame School on W. 79th St. Richie took note of Sr. Mary’s untiring dedication, leadership, hard work and compassionate spirit and was moved to help her with the school. Sr. Virginia O’Brien, SU was also at ND and Richie thought both Sisters were true, hard-working, devoted educators whose mission was well worth his investment. Richie’s daughters both attended Notre Dame: Claudia Pinto DeVito ’91 attended Notre Dame W. 79th St. and Talya Pinto Santillan ’95 attended Notre Dame St. Mark’s Place. Richie continued to help Notre Dame on W. 13th. Our sports teams (all ten of them) are the best attired in the league thanks to Richie’s donations through his company Gotham Promotions. Most recently, Richie helped Sr. Virginia complete the school’s air conditioning project. Richie reminded Sr. Virginia that Talya was now a Partner at Kohler Ronan, a prominent engineering company in New York City. Talya designed the air conditioning for the remaining eleven classrooms. Richie then introduced Sr. Virginia to a childhood friend of his, Thomas Lacorazza of Lacor Mechanical. Thanks to Tom’s generosity, the school was able to pay for air conditioning for the final eleven classrooms. Thanks to both Richie and Tom, for their generous financial support of the classroom air conditioning project at Notre Dame. Thank you, Richie, for all your generosity, your friendship and your support of Notre Dame School. We are blessed to call you a Chez Nous Angel.

11

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Angel Award to

Thomas Lacorazza

12

Chez Nous Angel Award Thomas Lacorazza

Thomas Lacorazza was born in Manhattan, raised in South Greenwich Village, attended St. Anthony’s Grammar School and Bishop Dubois High School. He also attended The University of Colorado State University and CCNY.

serving in the Army stationed at Fort Carson Colorado.

From 1968 to 1970, Thomas served as a photojournalist in the US Army having photos published in the Fort Carson Post Newspaper, Rocky Mountain News and Denver Post. He also found a lifetime passion for skiing while

In 1975 Thomas met the love of his life, Donna Marie Press, while he was the Chief Engineer at 19 Rector St, NYC and she was an Administrator for Ebasco Engineering in the building. They were married in 1977. Thomas and Donna raised their family of five, Gaetano, RitaAnn and Jennifer- first in Brooklyn and then in Marlboro, New Jersey. The newly married couple started their business, Lacor Mechanical Corporation in 1977 with Thomas as Chief Executive Officer and Donna as administrator and bookkeeper. After a few years Donna stopped working to be a stay-at-home mom. Through the years the family grew and the Lacorazzas were blessed with a son in-law, Giovanni, a daughter in-law Melissa, and four grandchildren: Giovanni Jr., Leonardo, Brianna and Gaetano Jr. Donna passed away prematurely last September, after forty-two years of marriage. However, Thomas is surrounded by very supportive family members and friends who are helping him through this difficult time. Lacor Mechanical has grown over the years into a well respected mid-sized mechanical service company in NYC. Thomas is now semi-retired residing in Hoboken and Freehold Township both in New Jersey. He is also a patron of several charities.

13

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Parent Award to

Deirdre Dunn Haddad P‘18 & P’20

14

Chez Nous Parent Award Deirdre and her husband, Bill, are the parents of six children. Both Chez Nous sisters, Meghan’18 and Erin ’20, commuted over three hours round trip daily for four years without a complaint! The four Haddad sons, Billy ‘06, Christopher ‘13, Timothy ’16 and Andrew ‘23 attended Regis High School. While raising the family, Deirdre volunteered her time as a PS 23 PTA officer, Girl Scout leader, Great Kills Swim Club board member and Regis Parents’ Club member and Speech judge. Through the Church of Saint Patrick’s parish, Deirdre served as a Eucharistic Minister, CCD teacher, CYO basketball coach and Boy Scout leader and Religious Emblem counselor for which she received the Bronze Pelican and the St. George medals at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Since arriving at Chez Nous, Deirdre offers her time with the ND Speech team, engages with families at the ND Open House events and assists with basket design on the Benefit’s Core Committee. Both Deirdre and Bill feel blessed that Meghan discovered Chez Nous thanks to a visit to her elementary school by Mr. Grote, Director of Admissions at ND. Having put the Notre Dame School third on her TACHS test, Meghan shadowed in late January and arrived home from the train and said that she “found a home for high school.” Now six years later, Deirdre and Bill witness how Chez Nous elevates students to levels that could not have been previously imagined. Meghan is excelling as a math major at Lafayette College and Erin will be a freshman in the fall majoring in Psychology at the College of the Holy Cross. The Haddad family values the time they spend at ND when attending Erin’s performances in the Glee Club and on the ND stage with the Drama Club. Erin and Meghan’s inductions into the National Honor Society and involvement with Anne’s Leader’s instituted the core values of scholarship and service, which will serve them well throughout their lives.

15

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Parent Award to

Lori Schwebel P‘20

16

Chez Nous Parent Award Lori Humfelt Schwebel was born in Kailua, Hawaii, the youngest of Nancy and Gary Humfelt’s two children. Her balmy days were numbered, however, as her family soon moved back to her parents’ native home in Minnesota. She attended public schools until eighth grade, but she was thrilled by the supportive environment she found when she entered Visitation High School, an all-girls Catholic high school, where music and theater were her passions. While recruiting for the co-ed choir her senior year, she met her future husband, Bill, a student at neighboring St. Thomas Academy. Lori attended the University of Minnesota, graduated with a BS in Business Administration and Marketing, and started working in financial services. After marrying Bill, they promptly moved to Seattle followed by Denver and Washington, DC. There, Lori enjoyed her career and many volunteer years with Hexagon, a non-profit community organization that presents an annual political satire-based musical, comedy revue with proceeds to charity. In 2002, Lori and Bill welcomed Chez Nous Class of 2020 graduate, Jaime Marie Schwebel. Three days after her second birthday, Jaime received the gift of big sisterhood when she greeted her twin brothers (and future Regians), Andrew and Eric. The children’s early years were spent visiting the Smithsonian Museums and National Zoo. They moved to Seattle in 2007, settling a block from their new parish and school, St. Joseph’s. Lori was a perennial volunteer - class parent, event planner, art docent, choir member and leader of the Ministry of Mothers Sharing (MOMS). In 2015, they traded in the Space Needle, Mount Rainier, and cloudy skies for apartment life in Manhattan. Jaime attended Salk School of Science for eighth grade, but prayers for a high school that focused both on building moral character and empowering girls were answered when she found Notre Dame School. Bound together by common values, Chez Nous offers a uniquely rich cultural, racial, and ethnic community of faculty, staff, students, and families. Realizing the mission to “promote academic excellence for girls, an awareness of God in their lives, and engagement in the world around them” requires support in many forms from all community members. Whether it’s contributing to the Annual Fund, stuffing envelopes, wrapping baskets, soliciting journal ads, or strategizing as part of the Benefit’s Core Committee, Lori and Bill are pleased to give time and resources to a place that provides so much for its students. As they graduate, the Schwebel family joins other grateful parents knowing that Jaime and her classmates will take their solid academics and global awareness with them as they embark on their future lives of leadership and service. 17
