We are honored to present the Anne de Xainctonge Award to
Vivian Cardia ‘70
10
Anne de Xainctonge Award Vivian Cardia ‘70 Anne de Xainctonge (1567 – 1621), founder of the Sisters of St. Ursula, desired to educate girls in the faith. Following in Anne’s tradition, in 1912, the Sisters founded Notre Dame School in New York City. The school is known for attracting smart young women for over 100 years who live Anne’s values of gratitude, conversatio, perseverance, and service. Vivian Cardia, Class of 1970, is definitely one of these women. Bright, outgoing, enthusiastic and perceptive, Vivian excelled at Notre Dame. Her family, who stressed their Italian culture, the value of a Catholic education, and philanthropy, found that Notre Dame was the right fit for their daughter. At Notre Dame, Vivian excelled in French and Latin, having studied both languages for four years. She also speaks fluent Italian, which she learned at home. Vivian’s trip to Notre Dame on West 79th St. was a straight run uptown from Greenwich Village, where her family owned the Beatrice Inn restaurant. Vivian learned from her parents how to be successful in business by mastering every job that is required in running a restaurant. The Cardia family graciously hosted memorable events for Notre Dame at the Beatrice Inn. Upon graduating from Notre Dame, Vivian attended Thomas More College at Fordham University where she received her BA degree in 1974. Following her graduation from Fordham, Vivian’s business acumen only increased. She was one of the first Italian American female members and traders on the American stock exchange. After the death of her parents, Vivian set up Vivicar LLC, to manage her property and to further her parents’ legacy. Vivian sat on the board of the National Organization of Italian American Women, La Scuola d’Italia, and was a member of Fordham’s Board of Visitors. She currently sits on the Board of Trustees of John Cabot University in Rome, the Board of the Ligurians in the World in New York, the American Society of the Italian Legion of Merit— who bestowed the title of Cavaliere Della Republica upon her—and the American Foundation of Savoy Orders—who knighted her a Dama di Commanda. All of us at Notre Dame are grateful to Vivian for her friendship, her loyalty, and her financial support. In the 51 years since her graduation, Vivian’s life and her philanthropy have made a significant impact on the school. She is a woman who lives the value of conversatio and treasures her relationships with her Chez Nous sisters. Vivian’s perseverance through life’s challenges is inspirational. We are pleased to present to her Notre Dame’s Anne de Xainctonge Award. Congratulations, Vivian. Ad multos annos. Ti amiamo!!

We are honored to present the Chez Nous Angel Award to
Judy & Russ Carson
12
Chez Nous Angel Award Judy & Russ Carson
Judy and Russ Carson have been involved in Notre Dame School for more than fifteen years. The Carson’s donated the Carson Family Science Center when the school moved to its present location on West 13th Street and currently provide annual scholarship funds to assist qualified students whose families would not otherwise be able to afford Notre Dame. Judy Carson grew up in the Boston area where she went to public school and graduated from Garland Junior College. She moved to New York City in 1968 where she met Russ; they were married in 1970 and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Judy served for many years as a volunteer tour guide at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and later graduated with a degree in Art History from Marymount Manhattan College. She further pursued her passion for art by founding an organization called Learning to Look which recruited volunteers to teach art appreciation to students in inner-city elementary schools of the Archdiocese of New York. Judy served as a Trustee of both the Inner-City Scholarship Fund and the Patrons Program. She is currently a Trustee of New York Public Radio, The Central Park Conservancy, Innisfree Gardens and The Carson Family Charitable Trust. Russ Carson grew up in Toledo, Ohio, earned his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College and came to New York City in 1965 where he attended Columbia Business School and graduated in 1967 with an MBA degree. He worked for the predecessor of Citicorp for eleven years where he was CEO of their venture capital subsidiary and then co-founded a venture capital/private equity firm called Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe in 1979. The firm, which specializes in making investments in the healthcare and information technology industries, has now been in business for forty-one years and has raised $27 billion of capital from its investors. Russ retired from his firm in 2018 to focus on his philanthropic interests. He is currently Chairman of The Carson Family Charitable Trust, Chairman of Partnership Schools, Co-chairman of the New York Genome Center, Chairman Emeritus of Rockefeller University, Chairman Emeritus of Columbia Business School, and a Trustee of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum and CO-OP Careers. He is also a Trustee Emeritus of Dartmouth College and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 13
We are honored to present the Chez Nous Parent Award to Irene & Mark Driscoll P’21
14
Chez Nous Parent Award
Irene and Mark met at Pomona College in Los Angeles after growing up worlds apart in St. Paul and Honolulu. After graduating from Pomona with degrees in art and economics, they went their separate ways, Irene to New York and Mark to Los Angeles to pursue grad school in business and advertising, respectively. Irene earned an MBA from NYU and Mark a MFA in Advertising from the Art Center College of Design and Parson’s School of Design in New York City. Upon graduation, they both accepted jobs in NYC, with Irene pursuing Finance at Citigroup and Mark advertising at Saatchi & Saatchi. They remained close friends and eventually married 10 years later in Pinehurst, NC. After many years of working with global clients in Europe and the Far East for their respective companies, including about two years’ living in Germany, Irene and Mark returned to New York to start a family. We became the ecstatic parents of two wonderful daughters, Melina, born in 1999 and Jacqueline, in 2003., Currently, Melina is finishing her senior year at Carnegie Mellon University and looking forward to beginning a consulting job this fall in media and technology at Price Waterhouse Coopers. Jackie is graduating with the class of 2021 from Notre Dame School and hoping to receive a fat envelope soon from her college of choice. While touring potential high schools for Jackie, we were struck by the serene but exhuberant atmosphere at Notre Dame School. The teachers, staff and administration spared no detail making each family feel special and each student capable to achieve to her potential. It was a Goldilocks fit! The number of clubs, special interest groups and local coffee shops left no one wondering what to do with her spare time. We were so excited, Jackie’s letter of acceptance to Notre Dame School was taped up in our kitchen for a full year! Notre Dame School’s setting in the West Village affords the girls a city experience, but within a secure and nurturing environment. The teachers and administrators are enthusiastic, knowledgeable and approachable. The wonderful people Jackie encountered at Chez Nous has ensured many life-long friends. 15
We are honored to present the Chez Nous Parent Award to Paulette Radulovic P‘21
16
Chez Nous Parent Award
After growing up in the Chicago suburbs, Paulette O’Dowd Radulovic graduated magna cum laude from the Honors Program of Western Illinois University with BA in Theatre. After acting in many classical theatre productions and national tours, Paulette chose to enter the New York market. While fulfilling a lifelong dream of being involved with The Actors Studio alongside legendary actors and directors, Paulette appeared as Ophelia in Hamlet within a workshop setting. Soon after, Paulette starred as the female lead in the World Premiere of Eugene O’Neill’s Bread and Butter, garnering international critical acclaim for her portrayal. When Paulette eventually chose to start a family with her husband, Nick Radulovic, she also decided to shift towards a new career path. Working for many years at the international investment banking firm of Lazard, Paulette extended her knowledge of global finance as her family grew. Each summer, the family would vacation in the coastal Montenegrin town where Nick grew up. Daughters Sofija, Anastasija, and Katarina each gained fluency in the Serbo-Croatian language, explored the ancient citadels, and enjoyed the idyllic natural beauty of the beaches and mountains during these formative years. On the first day when Paulette walked into Notre Dame School, she remarked to her daughter, “This is exactly where I would want to go if I was looking for a high school.” From that first moment, Paulette understood that the administration and faculty of Notre Dame School are exceptionally dedicated to fostering an environment wherein intellectual curiosity, creativity, and empathy are nurtured within each student. She is extraordinarily grateful to the Chez Nous community for providing such an incredible academic setting in which her daughter has flourished in every way and truly been excited to attend school every day.
