CLOUDED BEAUTY OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY 2017-2018

This model made out of copper pipes mimics the topography of Sarajevo and dry ice is used to stimulate its production of smog and its inversion layer. It was a starting point for my following project, Sarajevo Lung. Copper is a dominant material in Sarajevo and its increasing patination is one of the biggest attestation of Air Pollution in the city. The copper pipes are individually patinated and etched to tell the story of how the pollution has corroded the city and the health of its occupants, and the potential that lies beneath it.

STAGE 1 - UNKNOWN BEAUTY You see the valley as covered in “Clouds” with the silhouettes of the city peeking out

STAGE 2 - ANTHROPOCENE As you look closer, you realize that the clouds are actually smog and are dangerous. As the vapour starts settling down you see the damage it has done to the city, its people and its buildings. This is shown by the patination (corrosion) of the copper tubes.

STAGE 3 - CONCEALED BEAUTY As the vapor clears out , it reveals how beautiful the city would be if the air pollution criis was dealt with. The potential of the city is signified by the etching of the copper tubes

SARAJEVO LUNG

AIR PURIFICATION SKYSCRAPER OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY 2017-2018

Anthropocene is the current era in which human activity has a dominant impact on the climate and environment. In these circumstances, the role of architecture needs to evolve from being just a protective shelter from external factors to also helping improve the external environment. According to the WHO, Sarajevo is the most polluted city in Europe. Additionally, the citizens are struggling with mental wellbeing due to the city’s recent past of the Bosnian War in 1990s.

Negative Ion Purification System : Removed PM particles

Sarajevo Lung aims to tackle these problems and improve the physical and mental well being of Sarajevans. It hopes to revive the parks of Sarajevo by helping them regain their reputation as clean air zones and also, transform them into healing spaces for those facing mental distress. It does this by inhaling the dirtiest air of the city (cark parks) through its “Petals”. This inflates the “Membrane Structure” that goes to the top and exhales this air into the “Air Purification Axis” where it removes pollutants and exhales the clean air through “Output Tubes” in clean air zones. As the inflatable structure deflates, it comes back down and the process starts again.

Venturi Scrubbers: Pollutants like SO2, NO2 are removed

Through this process, the occupants of the inflatable structures “Healing Pods” experience a “Journey of Recovery” inspired by the stages of recovery from PTSD. The “Air Purification Axis” is designed to modulate the speed / pressure of air moving though it by altering the diameters of the pipes.

Output Pipes

Areas with the highest footfalls are targeted to create “Clean Air Zones” so purified air can be used efficiently.

JOURNEY OF RECOVERY - WOMB LIKE STRUCTURE

STAGE 3 : RECONNECTION & INTEGRATION Once at its highest point , the structure deflates and the windows start opening up. The occupants body is once again released into a hammock position. As the pod descends, it starts from above the inversion layer (the city is wiped out by the smog), moves through the layer and below it. The viewer is slowly reintroduced back to the “Real World” to help them cope with it better and with a different perspective.

STAGE 2 : REMEMBRANCE & MOURNING As the structure inflates around the person, it creates a womb like space almost hugs them. It enables their body into a fetal position and a guided meditation starts. Because of the inflation the windows shut and the occupant is encouraged to detatch focus.

STAGE 1 : DETATCHMENT A person going through emotional distress is provided a safe space where they can detatch from the situation

I used latex to design the inflatable component of the project as I believe it would lend physicality to the air being purified. I experimented with different ways of making and reinforcing latex to investigate its strength and material behavior.

KITESCAPE

BASIL SPENCE PROJECT - ENERGY FROM KITES UNIVERISTY OF BATH SEPT - DEC 2016 This project was undertaken as a team of students studying architecture, Civil engineering and Structural engineering. The intent for this project is to create a ‘structure on the sea’ - a building that acts as a catalyst in the physical and social renewal of the Isle of Portland, as well as deepening the visitors relationship with the sea and their consciousness of the sea. “The Kitescape” celebrates the kites transition from its role in the World Wars; engages the public with the spectacle of competition kite flying in the present, as well as educating them about the future potential of kite generated energy in Portland. The Kitescape will be a prototype to show the world the emerging technology of kite generated energy production. Theoretically, eventually all the existing wind farms in the UK (green indicates offshore, grey indicates onshore) could be replaced by kite farms to provide cleaner, renewable energy around the world more efficiently. Kites are now undergoing a revival as energy savers or generators. Aerofoil kites are being flown in front of large container ships at sea. The pull they generate saves ships 10 Tonnes of fuel per day, virtually for free. Companies such as KiteGen are developing kites that will generate electricity by harnessing the free power of the wind. This technology is only just emerging and our kitescape will be a beacon to introduce the system to the public.

ROSHINI

SCHOOL FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED UNIVERSITY OF BATH 2015-2016 In a technological world people are inclined to favour sight as a driving design concept and architecture is increasingly becoming a visual art. Roshini is an attempt to bring the dormant senses of touch and sound into the foreground of spatial perception and give architecture its experiential richness back. The project explored the “Borders between the Psychic and Psychic” and draws upon how the physical world has an impact on the way we think and behave. The project is located on a site next to a fast flowing river, which is used as an audible guide by the students and helps with navigation. The students walk along a “Curved Wall of Consciousness” that dips every time there is an entrance to a classroom. Roshini has an undulating roofscape that modulates the quality of light inside different classrooms. The quality of light in the classrooms will change according to the age of the children and depending on their development.

Every time the “Curved Wall of Consciousness” dips, there is an entrance door to a classroom. So that if the students feel the curve dip, they extend both arms and can reach the door easily.

Students know if they have to walk towards or away from the river and with or against the flow of it.

The free flowing curves let the children feel free where as the rigid forms of the classrooms encourage them to behave themselves.

The school has a very simple plan with all rooms to one side of the circulation to make cognitive mapping simpler.

The skylights are designed so that as light goes down the structure it softens as it scatters along each curve.

SCATTERING OF LIGHT

YEAR The younger the children are, the more the light scatters and the softer the lighting conditions are. As they grow up, the scattering is reduced in order to get them used to normal lighting conditions.

The roof unifies the building and expresses it in section. Since each classroom is unique, each skylight is unique.

AAD - ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN YEAR 1 SPECIALISATION

OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY 2016-2017

The Advanced Architectural Design module taught by Professor Andrew Holmes, focuses on experimentation through new media, materials and techniques. With unique design methodologies, I was asked to explore Acrylic. The theme for the year is Gothic. It imagines the universe as dark, as black, as a void. Below : exploration of a material (Acrylic) to design a piece suited for a given Body Part (Ankle)

Study of skeletal forms : A catalogue of skeletal forms first made in clay and then replicated through 3D printing. They were then used as a modular unit with ball and socket components to create different structures.

HIDE & SEEK

OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY FEB - APRIL 2017 This project is a re-interpretation of the Josephine Baker House by Adolf Loos and is an experimental design that builds on the material properties of Acrylic. Making a movie was an interesting way to study how occupants move in space and helped define the relationship between architecture and narrative. In the movie, Loos chases around Josephine in the house and they play a game of Hide & Seek. These are stills from the video I made.

00 :02 : 20 Laser cut acrylic sheets with polished edges were a very important feature for this video because of the contrasting difference in the qualities of the edge and plane of the material The model was photographed against a black background with minimal and directed light. The way the light was picked up by the edges of the sheet and defined them and the spaces they contained was extraordinary.
