BAT PREPARATION & CARE CHOOSING THE BEST BAT FOR YOU
We hand select our top end bats specially for you so you can be assured we have selected the best available.
If you are playing with a soft Incrediball type cricket ball, then a bat made from Kashmir Willow will be perfect for you. Once you start hardball, you should use an English Willow bat because they perform so much better. The ball will travel much easier and further off the sweet spot for the same amount of effort. An English Willow bat needs to be prepared by oiling and knocking in before it can be used with a hard ball. If this preparation is not done properly, your bat will not perform as well and will not last as long. English Willow bats also need regular maintenance and care. Bring your bat into one of our stores and our trained staff can give your bat an assessment. See below for more information.
TIPS FOR PREPARATION, CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF YOUR BAT Step 2 - Knocking In
• When
• All English Willow bats need knocking in. The
first bought, natural-faced bats should be lightly sanded along the grain with 150 grit sandpaper and then lightly oil the face, edges and toe of the bat with raw linseed or bat oil.
• Never
oil the splice or else you will weaken the handle. Don’t oil the back of the bat or the bat’s labels.
• Place
your bat in a horizontal position after oiling. This allows the oil to soak in evenly. An extra application of oil should be put on the toe to protect the bat from damp pitches and moisture retained in artificial pitches.
• After
a day or so the bat should be oiled again. After this, the bat only needs to be lightly sanded and oiled at various times during the season. Always maintain sufficient oil to prevent moisture penetration.
• Bats
with artificial facings do not need to be oiled whilst the facing is in tact. These should be removed at least once per season for oiling. A facing can be reapplied once dry if desired.
• As
your hairdresser will tell you, over oiling causes as many problems as under oiling. So if you are in any doubt please bring your bat in-store for some professional help. NEVER stand the bat in oil.
knocking in process should be undertaken with great care. How your bat is knocked in will affect the performance of the bat. • Knocking
in can start once your bat has been oiled and the oil has completely absorbed into the surface of the bat.
• Knocking
in is best done with a cricket bat mallet. An old ball bounced up and down on the face will not be effective. The bat should be repeatedly struck, with gradually increasing force, in all areas of the face below the splice where one would normally expect to hit the ball.
• We
recommend you take at least one hour per day spread across two to three weeks when preparing your bat. Particular attention should be given to rounding the edges, although the edges and toe should not be struck directly at right angles to the blade as this can cause damage.
• Once
you have completed the knocking in process, you must then test the bat. Play using old high grade balls. Hit only a few balls and then check your bat. If you have any seam marks or deep indentations on the blade, then your bat is not ready for match play and requires more knocking in.

every bat is different, knocking in times can vary. If you have any doubts as to whether your bat is ready to play, let a member of our staff advise you.
Step 3 - On-Going Maintenance • Do
not worry about small cracks on the face, this is perfectly natural. Minor damage will naturally occur, this does not mean your bat is faulty. It’s just natural wear and tear. With a little care these will not turn into major problems. You can sand down the area which is compressed or cracked using fine sandpaper. Always sand with the grain, not against it. Then apply a protective facing or fibreglass tape over the crack. If you are at all concerned, bring your bat into one of our craftsmen to have the cracks repaired professionally.
