Ideation/ Sketches Due to the only two members of the team, we want to play a colorful and diverse music. Therefore, We were trying to integrate a flute and a stringed instrument to perform at the same time that creates the diversity of sounds.

Material Exploration
We took reference from some existing flute making video. However, they didn’t really work for us due to special length and the thickness( for a design purpose) of our PVC pipe. We tested many methods to get the right pitch and nice whistling sound, which are the most difficult part of the process.

Design Details We organized the positions of metal pieces, trying to make a scale when the ball hits each piece. Also, we used rubber bands as a wall to bounce the ball repeatedly that make the sound more unpredictable.

Design Details We made a launcher to easily launch the ball. Besides, we marked each metal different amount of dot as pitch discrimination. The more dots it has, the higher pitch it is. It’s interesting that the third picture looks like a modern city with a lonely little ball.

Interviews Thank Ken Butler and D'Addario for kindly sharing their experience with us. We saw instruments from a new aspect and the experience inspired us to seek more musical possibility during the developing process. Also, we got some great suggestions from experts.
IND 612B- ID Tech- MUSIC + DESIGN Project MengJung Lin, ChiHuan Yang
Rehearsal We figured out how to played all three instruments and make them go with one another well and harmoniously during many times rehearsal. We also tried a simple arrangement. Watch video here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIcNOo-z qx8

Feedback and Responses 1. The arrangement work! They sound together. 2. It will be awesome if we can make something happen with the same finger position of the flute/ guitar. ( FluTar) 3. The base of PINGball could be foldable, so it will be more portable. 4. it has the possibility to be a children’s nice inspiring musical toy. Experiences Making the instrument is the new field for me. Fortunately, we have the chance to meet Ken Butler that give me so many thoughts about the possibilities of instrument, and are glad to visit the D'Addario that realize the fundamental of instruments. That was so great that inspired me to explore the music itself. Our team tried to use different materials to make the sound and also considered the relation between the user and the instrument. We believe that the way to make the wonderful music is how we interact with the instruments.

As we have to submit a video to this competition, a garment that will change its look while model walks may have some advantage. We created this multi-layers construction that the color will turn more vivid when being squeezed. This construction will apply to a more puffy garment, so the change will look more dramatic.

The third concept is using the metal sheets to create the unfamiliar structure of the garment. When folded, it can have a different reflection and the appearance. Also, we are thinking the different forms of garments from the geometrical one to something more streamlined that present the hard material with a visually soft feeling.

Inspirations E Physalis alkekengi ( Japanese/ Chinese lantern plant) It is easily identifiable by the large, bright orange to red papery covering over its fruit. The papery cover is actually an inflated basal calyx. It blooms in the winter, dries in spring.

E-Avant-garde
Sample Materials E Because we are not expert at sewing and tailoring, we are trying to use materials to create the structure of the garment such as resin. We’d like to make a mold and pour resin on it to create a shell that gives the garment a structural and curious shape.

Testing
First, we tried to mold the resin by pouring on arm, so we can get a shape that super clings to the human body. However, we found something good and bad about this material during the process. Bad: This kind of resin is too liquid to maintain its shape on the body. Also, it’s hard to control the form. Good: In the first few hours, the resin is soft enough to be molded, and it will harden.

Experiences First of all, I was kind of nervous about making a delicate wearable art in such a limited time. Therefore, I tried to think about different methods to achieve the goal instead of using the traditional fabrication process. Using the rasin to make the frame of garment was a really new experience that I learned a lot the property of rasin and tried to put it into another project. Also, learning the dyeing was the one of the most valuable thing in this project. That was so amazing when put the fabric out of the dyeing agent and saw the color changing under the sunlight. It finally turned out to be a wonderful experience that I can integrate what I learned in this project into the future designs.
FORMS + LIGHTS Project
TABLE LAMP
IND 612B- ID Tech- FORMS + LIGHTS Project ChiHuan Yang
What is the purpose of the design?
First of all, I try to think outside the box, trying to swipe the image and composition of the lamp. Instead of thinking the elements of the lamp, I am more willing to focus on the light itself and explore the ways to convey the beauty and form of the light.
IND 612B- ID Tech- FORMS + LIGHTS Project ChiHuan Yang
Who is the intended user?
The person who has worked for years is ready to get married and decorate for the new lovely place. Mochi light can be the best present and the icebreaker.
IND 612B- ID Tech- FORMS + LIGHTS Project ChiHuan Yang
What is the intended environment?
The new lamp for the new place. The small but lovely place needs an interesting and unique artwork. It can put on the desk in your workplace or study room, and also can put the light in the spotlight of the house.
IND 612B- ID Tech- FORMS + LIGHTS Project ChiHuan Yang
How does the form relate to the purpose, user, and environment? Mochi is a light with a growing-out organic shape from the corner of the light base. The connection of geometric and organic forms create a conflict and inconsistent beauty. Just like the shape, the meaning of the light is simple but strong. The purpose of the design is to think outside the box and focus on the essence of beauty. The rectangular shape represents the frame, and the organic bubble represents the possibilities. The shape tells the story that encourages people to find the novelty in our daily life.
IND 612B- ID Tech- FORMS + LIGHTS Project ChiHuan Yang
What inspired the design?
We admire the beauty of the organic forms from nature. We also appreciate the elegance of the geometric artificial shapes. That makes me want to combine these two beautiful elements. The transformation from geometric to organic forms can create a really elegant streamline.
IND 612B- ID Tech- FORMS + LIGHTS Project ChiHuan Yang
Experiences The first time for me to 3D print a large scale stuff and have to consider how to put the base and kits into the lamp. The field trip was amazing that saw the assembly and testing of lights. The 3D printing technology might be the trend for the new manufacturing method and I am glad I have the chance to go through the process.
