We entered [the camp] almost in the dark, there were thousands of American soldiers, it was the first time I saw them. As soon as the Americans saw us, they started to throw in our direction clothes, shoes, chocolate, cigarettes. Everyone rushed to be able to catch something, who on food, who on clothing. I was lucky, I managed to get a sweater and a shirt. Then I drew back as a series of fights began, shoves, punches, slaps, everything flew in that chaos. They fought like lions, hunger and cold make even the most civilized man an animal.
