CHAPTER I Between stratum and substratum:
an urban design project for the Lotti and Tronari quarries in Naples Master Thesis Supervisor: Prof. Arch. Pasquale Miano 2018/2019
Everything starts from the project PRIN (the italian abbreviation of Project Research of relevant National Interest), that aims to investigate and develop multiple themes with reference to the practical activities of citizens to acquire and improve their wellness, directing urban transformation to sustainability through the prevention of chronic diseases of the 21st century. In fact, obesity, diabetes, allergies and asthma are new epidemics, generated not by a virus, but largely by inadequate environments and behaviors. Research in the medical field has highlighted environmental conditions that favor movement and physical activity of human beings stimulate energy and individual consumption and improve cognitive performance. So, the porposal of this project was based on the will of making Naples a positive example of sustainability and health, introducing a new cycle-pedestrians’ paths in the consolidated city. Planning axonometry of the Lotti quarry
The project from the urban scale arrives to a smaller one. The main subject of the project is the redevelopment of the space. It includes an open-air quarry used for the construction of the underlying district (quarry Lotti) and underground one (quarry Tronari). My project proposal places this area within the discourse of the PRIN theme, reactivating it through the cycle and pedestrian path. This new accessibility involves the need to intervene with the insertion of new connections and the reopening of existing connections, currently in a state of abandonment and/or interrupted. Following an action of reclamation and demolition of the pre-existing elements, a subdivision of the area is grafted in relation to the perception that the space generates on the visitor, that also thanks to its natural morphological characteristics. First of all, its condition of closure towards the surrounding context. A new Oasis inside the heart of the historical city, for long hidden.
This action has been translated into the inclusion of new activities aimed at the user’s physical but also psychological wellness. Through the volumes, the connection between full and empty (extraction and construction) is emphasized. The project develops according to a stratification process, starting from the highest area up to the immersion inside the new garden. The first element encountered when arriving from the cycle / pedestrian path is the belvedere, an element that offers the last view of the city. Then there are three possibilities: continue the path that is renewed within the urban fabric, direct entry through the vertical core present in the entrance pavilion or gradually immerse yourself through a suspended walkway. Once inside the visitor can enjoy the green space with a large fountain and the urban gardens or move through the circumscribed area with some buildings dedicated to sport.

To get out of inside the Lotti quarry (or to enter depends on the point of view) the visitor can pass through the covered quarry (Tronari). A quarry currently in a state of neglect and used for the most part as a abusive parking lot. After the war the quarry was home to various workshops including fireworks, hence the name Tronari, Thunder. Currently there is only one laboratory that has survived, a spectacular metal foundry. For this area the project idea is to maintain this activity and reorganize the rest of the space as shops. Creating a covered space with artisan workshops. This workshops will follow the functional scheme of the existing one. Such as a front space as a sale area and a rear as a processing space.

CHAPTER II A new proposal for Anibong waterfront after Yolanda Tiphon an urban design project to face the emergency
Workshop Supervisor: Prof. Arch. Pasquale Miano and Arch. Bruna di Palma 2017
Typhoon Haiyan of November 2013, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded. Thirtieth hurricane, thirteenth typhoon and fifth super typhoon of the 2013 Pacific hurricane season. Haiyan was born in a low pressure zone southeast of Pohnpei in the western Pacific Ocean on November 2. Monitored constantly, the typhoon moved west in an environment of light winds and warm ocean surface temperatures that turned Yolanda into a tropical depression. Elevated to the degree of tropical storm. The hurricane therefore begins a process of rapid evolution that leads it to the intensity of a typhoon. With rapid expansion and intensification and with the clear eye of the cyclone visible from satellites. Joint Typhoon Alert Center raises its level to super typhoon, with winds above 240 km / h. The purpose of the intervention is to maintain the culture of the place as much as possible by creating a safe, resistant and lively space through three main points: Safety, urban re-planning and public equipment. Faced with the problems arising from the absence of protection from objects coming from the sea, the first step was to introduce a succession of cliffs as a protection of the coastal area. A further protective barrier is given by thick vegetation in the area considered most at risk given the exposure to winds from the sea. The vegetation gradually shrinks as you get closer to the more residential areas. The new location of the residential area is placed in the safest area at the foot of the hill. This area is divided into sectors connected with shelters to facilitate evacuation in case of emergency. The organization of the area provides for its growth. The trade in handmade objects and local foods is very widespread in the local tradition. This is why it was mandatory to insert a dedicated area. This area is in close agreement with both the public area and the residential area. As emerged from the analysis of the place, the latter was devoid of emergency and rescue facilities in case of catastrophic events. The shelters are connected with main axes to the various areas of public and private use. These elements have a circular shape to optimize capacity and reduce bulk, and takes inside some temporary houses for the citizens of the village. The second purpose of the project is to celebrate and to make indelible the power of nature. One of the ships that during the hurrican were throw and stocked on the beach will be transformed itself in a memorial-monument.

REFUGE
Buinlding in case of emergency
The word REFUGE ( from the latin word Refugium , refugere) defines a place that offers shelter and protection. As emerged from the analysis of the lot, it doesn’t have any emergency and rescue facilities in case of catastrophic events. For this reason the shelters are connected with the main axes to the various public and private areas. These elements have a circular shape to reduce bulk, allowing to accommodate a small number of families and reduce the friction of the wind on the structure.

CHAPTER III The space of a square in Monte di Procida an urban design project
4th grade Supervisor: Prof. Arch. Pasquale Miano and Arch. Bruna di Palma 2017
This project, in the balneareal area near the city of Naples, has as a purpose to carry out the arrangement of a public square currently disconnected from the city, so extremely isolated and abbandonated. The area is located at the foot of the upper part of the town of Monte di Procida, the municipality to which the site belongs. The project involves the arrangement of the outdoor area and the insertion of two receptive elements that redevelop it. On one hand, a seaside resort with spas and thermal pools and on the other a hotel. These two elements frame the central square in close connection with the public beach. The first building with a more public character has passages that make the building passable while the second with a more private character has a closed facade from which the bedrooms “pop out. The square is located at the end of a path currently open to vehicles which makes the place difficult to access and to recognize for the people coming from the lower part. Following the analysis, the square is conceived as an element that branches off from a central point on both sides, generating two pilotis paths covered with canvas elements. One facing the sea and the other towards the tourist promenade connected to the future nature trail that circumnavigates the area at the foot of the mountain and reich the marina of Acqua Morta.

CHAPTER IV School complex
Project in Lanusei (Sardegna, Italy)
Public competition Project: Pasquale Miano Studio with Arch. Maria Chiara Rinaldi and Arch. Federica Sommella 2020
This is one of the project that i worked on during my period inside the Pasquale Miano Studio team, a studio in my hometown. We join a contest with this project. The task was to rehas the old high school turns it in an elementary and secondary school and add a new building for the High school nearby. In the town of Lanusei, the school undoubtedly plays a central role in an articulated urban renewal program: the functional redevelopment of an existing school, the construction of a new school and a renewed system of urban connections make this intervention strategic. Hence the relevance of the experimentation that can be carried out. With this in mind, the project for the new Lanusei School Complex was drafted: the various problems in the field were considered, faced in relation to the context and the place of intervention, and a design solution was reached in able to guarantee the achievement of all objectives both of an urban nature and those more specifically architectural, spatial and functional. in reference to these objectives, the project arises from some precise choices motivated by design and architectural criteria summarized below. The unity and continuity of the school complex, despite the differences in the buildings and spaces that compose it. The creation of a single school complex, which can guarantee a strengthening of the sense of belonging of the students and which can be configured as a point of reference. The redevelopment of the school lot and transformation of the area into a contemporary civic center through the introduction of functions and spaces with a public vocation at the service of the entire community. The creation of a strong integration between the new municipal gymnasium, the system of existing schools and the newly built volumes. Definition of an articulated system of open spaces, through which to increase the play areas and outdoor sports. A close relationship between the configuration of the building and the didactic / pedagogical aspects with particular attention to the theme of the flexibility of the environments in response to the increasingly diversified and changing educational needs.

TECHNICAL INSTITUTE OF SURVEYORS
View on the connection between gym and the new school Library
The project for the new seat of the Technical Institute of Surveyors and the new gym, configured as an extension of the current site of the Art High School, is based on a design and architectural criteria and starts from an in-depth study of the intervention area. In fact, it is the particular configuration of the lot that has determined the main design choices. The high school develops in a lot located at an elevated altitude with respect to the roadway. Starting from these significant differences in altitude, we have chosen to include the new gym below the area currently used as a parking lot and entrance to the high school, defining a large square. The school building is placed adjacent to the existing high school, creating an enclosed space on the central square. In its Inside, the building is developed on levels for which each floor has a specific function. In the basement, directly connected to the gym, is situated the library. On the ground floor there is the entrance with the atrium of the school and on the following floors there are classes and workshops.

The former seat of the Technical Institute of Surveyors will have to be completed and redeveloped, not only through structural interventions, but also through the inclusion of new functions and a rationalization of internal and external spaces. The nerve center of the design inherent in the interior spaces is constituted by the atrium gallery, a large central space for sorting flows and along which, in addition to the vertical connection systems, also the canteen and the library are located, as large aggregation points and carrying out activities common to primary and secondary school. The educational activities of the two different cycles are arranged in the two arms of the building. The classrooms and laboratories have been designed with a view to flexibility and multiple possibilities for configuring the environments, using fixed and mobile furnishings. Finally, intervention was made on the elevations, inserting chromatic differentiations in correspondence with the openings, in order to report the two different school cycles inside the institute to the outside.
