CASTLE RESORT A tourist facility surrounded by nature

The complex has a public part, open to customers of the resort and external, consisting of a wellness center and a cafeteria with bar, located inside the ruins of the Roccamandolfi castle and a private part that consists of accommodations located in the wood. The project’s strong point is the relationship with the natural environment and the harmonious design with the landscape. The intervention does not aim to a mimesis with the ruins, on the contrary, it defines a new image for the monument itself, trying to reveal the inner structure, through shapes and new materials. Externally the project of the castle is presented as a non-compact volume characterized by various roof heights, where skylights are located. The gradients that are created are used to place big openings that look at the landscape. Identity and interesting aspect of the project is the walkway, which is a scenic element that surrounds the entire castle. The private castle accommodations are spread in the forest, in contact with the nature. Each module is conceived as a panoramic accommodation providing all comforts in a small, cozy space, and it consists of a bathroom and a bedroom open over the landscape. In addition, there are a loggia, imagined as a space for contemplation of nature and reading area overlooking woods, and in some cases also tiny private saunas.

CHILLIN’ aROUND Transformation of a little fragment into a gathering place

Level -1, between building Poliprint, Trifoglio and Nave: in front of the ceramic tiles of Giò Ponti, behind the concrete ramps. A small piece of grass, a big tree, some students playing cards on some tables, an unusual day of sun. But the grass is damaged, there is a technical structure splitting it into two, the view is hidden by the car parked just in front. The proposal of Chillin’ aRound: split the area into two. Treat the soil in two ways: soft > grass; tough > wood. Create a ring around the big tree. Arrange a sequence of seats and tables throughout the ring. Raise a fence to hide the ramp behind. The sequence is composed of three elements: the double bench, the picnic table, the chaise longue. The seats welcomes different uses of the typical Polimi student: from studying to rolling cigarettes. Chillin’ aRound is a platform for random activities. Chillin’aRound is a suggestion. Chillin’ aRound is mostly chillin’, no stress.

FROM VILLA TO BARRIO Urban upgrade of an informal settlement in Buenos Aires

The thesis’ aim is to carry out an architectural experience and research of the informal settlement of the Villa in the autonomous city of Buenos Aires, characterized by the paradoxical coexistence of both richness and extreme poverty in the heart of the city. The analysis theme concerns the particular urban and social situation of La Villa 31 and its possible future vision. Thanks to the help of no profit associations and architects working there, there was the opportunity to personally interact with the inhabitants of the informal settlement, understanding the interrelationship, problems and needs in order to deduce a framework to upgrade the Villa. Therefore, the research moves from a deep social and urban analysis of the context to the design of three specific architectural focuses: the Urban Market close to the Retiro Bus Terminal, the Linear Park under the Illia highway crossing the Villa and the new housing prototype. The project proposal provides, even in a limited juncture of economic and resource constraints, an urban refuge to those who live the city, avoiding the grandiose urban renewal projects in favor of a local approach that can provoke a response from the city. The research aims to explore whether and how certain processes can create new hubs capable of improving the quality of urban space and urban life.

RESONANCES Design of a kindergarten and an urban market in Milan

The two functions ( kindergarten and urban market ) are not physically related but connected by the use of the same materials, both for structure and external finishing. The Urban Market is more extrovert, being a semi-public space which is related to the existing park through its flexible open space, defined by the presence of the market concrete structure. The marvelous space of the urban market is defined by the presence of the concrete structure and enriched by numerous stands placed at the same distance from each other. The services (including stairs and elevation) are the ones that physically separate the two functions. The kindergarten uses a different language, being very open on the internal courtyard. The quality of the internal space is defined by the mutation of the concept of corridors, which becomes a huge passage connected to the classes where kids can play and do special activities. Architecturally speaking, the hierarchy of spaces is detectable both in plan and elevation, where classes are higher than the rest, looking at the internal courtyard.

RESEARCH CENTER OF SEVILLE HARBOUR Rehabilitation of an industrial building in Seville

The proposal is an expansion of the Research Center of the harbour of Seville inside an industrial building inherited from the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, today unused, and the adaptation of space in order to host conferences and exhibitions. Two courtyards are introduced in order to divide the big building into three areas: the first as entrance and reception, the second as exhibition space, for both temporary and permanent exhibitions of the harbour of Seville and the third as conference room. The project develops through a series of modulated volumes inside the exhibition space that host offices and research spaces. There is an open space in front of the research center as a prelude to the exhibition and as another attraction. A series of spaces is defining the river’s edge and related by different heights, materiality, textures and applications.

PRESENCE | ABSENCE New atmospheres

Trying to imagine an atmosphere to recreate within the cube, the first step was the insertion of the human figure, thinking about the possible relationships between man and space. Is the man that gives feature to a sterile space such as an empty plexiglas cube, or is the space itself with its defined size that influences the man? The cube was divided into two equal portions: in the first one photographs representing the man in various points of the space have been arranged; in the second one the corresponding photos with the same points of view, representing the same space, but empty have been placed in the same position. In order to make this distinction between the presence and absence of man in space stronger, a tridimensional human figure has been inserted in the second half of the cube. The result is the coexistence of two distinct realities of man’s presence manifestation. On one hand, the man is physically absent, but he is present through his representation. On the other one, the man is physically present but his representation is absent. The contrast created is deliberately provocative. Where is man’s presence stronger? Presence of absence? or Absence of presence?
