WHO WE ARE whose aim is to impart at-risk youth and marginalized young people with the various social and professional competencies required to excel within the specialized field of vintage European motorcycle restoration. We promote generalizable skill sets that emphasize effective decision-making, conflict resolution, and occupational preparedness.

Grounded in research literature, then guided by the competitive requirements of the industry’s labor market, our training program expects

participants. Admissions is offered to individuals, young people between the ages of 16-24, who evidence disproportionate rates of long term, overall life dissatisfaction, likely to result in chronic social and occupational underachievement.

In an attempt to offset the statistical overrepresentation of school-age, ethnic minorities in non-academic environments, we assess the clinical significance of reported behaviors through a series of structured interviews and validated measures of mood and personality, including the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)* .

Pre, during, and post-intervention measures are administered in order to quantify individual progress and program efficacy. Additionally, our alumni program grants those who satisfy training criteria, complete access to the facility’s resources.

* The MMPI-A will be administered to individuals 16-18 years old, and the MMPI-2 will be administered to 18-24 year olds.

Worth Motorcycle Company, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization

OUR STORY

Jeremy Malman, then a PhD student, and his long-time friend, Edon Gottlieb, who, at the time, was fully immersed in a rigourous apprenticeship under the renowned

Michael

Barragan, initiated the conceptual framework of the program; the result of an unforgettably synergetic exchange between the two where they, very thoughtfully, described how motorcycles and motorcycle maintenance had positively impacted their lives in unexpected ways. Both had spent a great deal of time working with at-risk youth and young offenders in varying capacities, coupled with the complementary nature of their respective professional backgrounds, they were encouraged to further explore the potential utility of a motorcycle restoration facility that exposed inexperienced, and marginalized young people, to the art of vintage motorcycle restoration. An exhaustive review of the research literature yielded several compelling findings.

Most startlingly however, was the

conspicuously neglected practice of vocational mentorship. Instead, many widely relied upon therapeutic strategies were more closely aligned with failure and personal dissatisfaction than anything else. Considering the global programmatic shortcomings of the organizations expected to serve this extremely vulnerable community of young people, seemingly couched in habit and outdated theoretical paradigms, we vowed to build something better.

“The study of the art of motorcycle maintenance is really a miniature study of the art of rationality itself. Working on a motorcycle, working well, caring, is to become part of a process, to achieve an inner peace of mind.”

– Robert M. Pirsig Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

We exclusively employ evidence-based interventions with both measurable and publicized outcomes. From the bikes we build to where we build them, every element of the organization is grounded in empirical data and a thorough understanding of the analytical measures utilized to derive said results.

Our strict adherence to these ideological principles eliminates many of the barriers to successful treatment outcomes experienced by an overwhelming percentage of disenfranchised young people. In the absence of these sociopolitical barriers, our interns are able to successfully navigate the more immediate and generalizable challenges of our program.

04 HOW WE DO IT

Our technical mentors include many of the most talented and respected men and women in the field. Given our unique protocol, and our unwavering commitment to cultural equity and evidence-based intervention, all staff, consultants, and volunteers are required to undergo a rigorous, 30-day training program designed by published academics with doctorate training in sociology, clinical psychology, and humanistic criminology. Continuous professional development seminars in multiculturalism and crosscultural communication are also mandated and administered by many of the field’s top scholars.

Jeremy Malman is the co-founder and Executive Director of Worth Motorcycles. As a doctorate student, his research emphasized the sociocultural mechanisms fueling our modern day understanding of adolescent antisocial behavior.

In addition to having worked with several adolescent treatment centers, Jeremy has consulted on Senate legislation, developed offender reentry pilot programs, and partnered on projects with the NAACP, and LGBT. He was also a competitive club racer, winning several Superstock Rookie events at Louden International Speedway in New Hampshire aboard his Triumph Speed Triple.

Edon is the co-founder and Director of Operations of Worth Motorcycles. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, the New York native’s unwavering interest in structures and meticulous design compelled him to pursue a career as a photographer. His aesthetic integrity yielded commercial success, but after building his first bike, he learned that success for him involved building motorcycles. To this end, Edon sought an apprenticeship under the rigorous supervision of renowned builder, ESE’s Michael Barragan. Although long days and late nights were the rule rather than the exception, Edon’s enthusiasm was unflappable. He ravenously consumed all that Michael had to offer, while simultaneously maintaining his commitment to provide the same to another.
