LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
We have all seen the Matthew Hoffman installations and stickers around the city reminding us that we are beautiful. Our Summer Beauty Issue is as good a time as any to drive the point home and remember that beauty truly comes in all forms and in every shape and size. For our only true issue of the summer, we decided to do something different with our cover and select a few Chicago women in celebration of the season with an urban garden party theme (create your own garden get-together using the tips on page 17). Our gorgeous and accomplished cover women also gave us the inside scoop on their warm-weather beauty secrets and how they plan on making the most of the rest of the summer. For all of you beauty junkies out there, we put together a list of local brands offering the absolute best products. All women-owned, all must-haves. We encourage you to continue to seek out and support even more womenowned companies and let us know if you find other Chicagobased beauty companies that we should know about! Summer is also time when many of us can experience a heightened anxiety about our bodies and how they measure up to what is considered beautiful. We fell in love with the body positivity article on page 25 written by style blogger and Chicago Woman Ambassador Board member Dasha Guyton and wanted to share it with you. It is a powerful reminder of how important it is to love ourselves in the skin that we are in. Speaking of loving yourself, we are excited to bring you our Fierce 50 Over 50 story, featuring 50 women over the age of 50 who are in the prime of their lives and are loving it. Many of these women are living and working right here in Chicago and we are inspired by their stories and got the distinct impression that they felt that their best years are still ahead of them. ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER?
SEE YOUR BEST! LOOK YOUR BEST! TOP 10 TIPS FOR SUMMER EYE HEALTH WITH LAKEVIEW’S BEST REVIEWED OPTOMETRIST
1. INVEST IN THE RIGHT SUNGLASSES! Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, yet their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s UV-A and UV-B radiation. Summer = more time outside = more UV exposure. Wearing non-100%UV blocking sunnies actually damages the front (AKA pinguecula), and the inside of your eyes (pupils enlarge allowing more light to enter your eye and promoting cataracts and macular degeneration). Polarized lenses significantly reduce eyestrain by cutting high-glare (i.e. while driving/swimming) and specific color tints enhance your visual comfort during certain activities (i.e. grey is best for intense sun, amber for fishing, yellow for overcast/cloudy days, and green for depth of field sports like golf or tennis).
2. KIDS NEED SUNGLASSES TOO! Although it can be difficult to get kids to keep their sunglasses on, it’s actually much more important than you think! Most of our lifetime exposure to harmful UV radiation happens before age 18, when eyes are more sensitive and still developing.
3. COVER UP! Protect your skin, just like you would your eyes when in the sun. Yes, I’m an Optometrist, but I still want you to stay protected from harmful UVA/UVB radiation. Wear hats or visors, use umbrellas or find shade, and apply your lightweight, water-resistant Beautycounter sunscreen - SPF30, formulated with non-nano zinc oxide & aloe which helps hydrate skin, while antioxidant-rich green tea & blood orange extracts fight free radicals. Why Beautycounter? They banned >1500 chemicals from being used in any of their products. They even have a handy “NeverList” of ingredients you will never see in any of their products.

4. PROTECT YOUR EYES & BEWARE OF CHEMICALS AND NATURAL IRRITANTS! Summer season is a popular time for home improvement & sports. I recommend you always use protective goggles. Chemicals found in pools and natural irritants like poison ivy, oak, insect bites, lake and river bacteria can be harmful or bothersome to you in general, but especially near your eyes. Be sure to always wear goggles if you will be opening your eyes in a pool, river, or lake. Also, if you find yourself outside near natural irritants (i.e. camping), be mindful of keeping your hands clean after touching certain plants, as rubbing allergens into your eyes can cause many problems.
5. SAND IN YOUR EYES?! A common summer issue is finding yourself with sand in your eyes from the wind, people walking by, or shaking out towels. DO NOT rub your eyes! I recommend you flush out these particles with saline or preservative-free artificial tears but rubbing your eyes can actually cause the coarse sand particles to scratch your cornea. See me immediately if you find no relief. 773-549-1111
6. C HOOSE THE HEALTHIEST CONTACTS FOR YOUR EYES! Our eyes have a high tolerance for gradual discomfort, so it’s tough to feel irritation as it accumulates. My healthiest patients love the feeling of a fresh, clean lens every single day & say it’s truly life-changing. It’s the safest, healthiest, most convenient way to keep eyes feeling & seeing their very best. There’s no lens care or costly solutions required—just wear them 1 day & throw them away! And now that 1 day contacts can enhance your eye color, correct for astigmatism, and even eliminate the need for reading glasses - the opportunities are endless.
7. EAT RIGHT TO PROTECT YOUR SIGHT! Healthy body = healthy eyes. A diet rich in colorful fruits & dark green leafy veggies - spinach, ︎kale, collard greens - is great for your eyes because of its Lutein and Zeaxanthin content. Fish such as sal︎mon, t︎una and halibu︎t are filled ︎with omega-3 fatty acids, which are amazing for dry eye as well as healthy skin, hair, nails, brain, and our heart.
8. STAY HYDRATED! Drinking 8 glasses of water/day will support eye moisture and help fight dry eye disease. Not only is drinking the right amount of water great for eye health, but also skin and overall health as well. If you drink coffee or other diuretics, add 1 extra 8oz glass for every cup of coffee of caffeinated drink. Drink even more water if the weather is >90F, or if you spend a lot of time in a hot environment, exercising, or doing activities that cause you to sweat. If you constantly have dry mouth, dry skin, lack of urination and dry eyes, then you need to increase your fluid intake!
9. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP! Sacrificing sleep can result in dark circles or bags under your eyes because it increases the retention of blood and fluid around the eyes. Also, sleepy eyes are often dry. Eyes need a constant supply of tears for optimum function, which is why blinking is so important. Insomnia results in popped eye vessels (AKA blood-shot eyes) and prevents eyes from getting needed fluid circulation which cleans and renews them. Another and even odder consequence are eye spasms (AKA myokymia). This involuntary eye twitch can be uncomfortable and distracting. Adequate sleep rests the body and all its eye muscles therefore the twitching should only be temporary.
10. SCHEDULE YOUR EYE EXAM! When back-to-school time rolls around, schools require kids to have an eye exam. A good tip to keep everyone healthy is to schedule your eye exam with your kid’s eye exam, before the back to school rush – the sooner, the better. Although your vision may seem “fine” and eyes may feel “normal”, visiting a trusted eyecare professional annually is the only way to know for sure. People often assume that if they don’t wear glasses or contacts, there’s no reason to check their ocular health. However, many common eye diseases - glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration, and even cancer - often have no warning signs. A retinal eye exam is the only way to detect their early stages. At Halsted Eye Boutique we are a “No Puff” and “No Drop” practice. Our Optomap® Retinal Exam provides me an ultra widefield view of the back of the eye. It’s quick, painless, a nd requires no dilating drops or blurry vision. Book online at www.DrJoannaSlusky.com

WHAT’S IN A NAME
EXECUTIVE EDITORIAL BOARD
by Terri Brax
A
s the founder of two organizations, I find the reactions about the names of my companies amusing, to say the least. My first company, TeacherCare, generally reminds people of someone special in their life. They tend to smile and say something kind about teachers. But, when I mention that my second company, Women Tech Founders, is best known by its acronym WTF, the ice of the coldest venture capitalist seems to crack. And so it is with names. They represent their owner. They brand their owner.
“Our names are an integral part of the faces we show the world. If we are judged first by our appearance, we are judged next by our names.” —SHARON BOLTON
Emilia DiMenco CEO, Women’s Business Development Center
So what does your name mean? When people hear your name, what do you want their reaction to be? Your name is a reflection of the life you are leading. You may not have chosen it, but you are choosing what it stands for.
Kathy Herbert Business Consultant and Investor
I am very proud to be on the Executive Editorial Board of Chicago Woman. Chicago Woman’s name is a promise to honor the diverse women drivers in Chicago. As a tech writer for CW, I’ve been grateful to honor many of my sheroes directly, including Sandee Kastrul and Elena Valentine who are fighting to make our city stronger and safer. I’ve been inspired by women like the defiant Kaney O’Neil and learned from leaders throughout the city, from our last CIO Brenna Berman to the successful business founders, Desiree Vargas and Coco Meers, among others. I hope the stories of these amazing local women I have shared through Chicago Woman will help you define your journey. Much like Women Tech Founders, Chicago Woman shines the spotlight on great women to build a platform that advances other women. The name says it all. cw

Chicago Woman. Now there is a powerful name. Strength. Grace. Grit. But one thing about “Chicago Woman” stands out the most—It is the collective spirit that Chicago women have to lift each other up. Despite the violence; Despite the politics; Despite the negative forces that Chicago women face in the home and workplace.
You have the ability to use the unique experiences that have made you the Chicago woman you are to help others in our city. It doesn’t matter what side of the city you come from or what challenges you’ve faced. Each zip code and each scar brings its own life learnings -- and an insight to how you can best raise others up.

Stylist Katie Schuppler on selecting the perfect summer pieces for our cover: “For the cover shoot I wanted a super summery, fun, and flirty overall look for each of the women. GET MESSY. To achieve that “garden” feel, create a bed of greens and foliages. EMBRACE THE SEASON. The best part of summer is the abundance of blooms available. Use them while you can because in a blink of an eye they will be gone!
BE BOLD. Don’t shy away from color when choosing chargers, plates and glassware. IT’S IN THE DETAILS. Every detail counts when setting a small intimate table, be mindful of the little things.
ENTICE THE SENSES. Don’t forget a sprig of rosemary or herbs on your guests’ napkins. DÉCOR. Bring indoor furniture outdoors for a luxe feel—never underestimate the power of a velvet chair.

GUIDE TO
Streeterville TOP STOPS GREEN RIVER 259 East Erie 18th Floor Michelin-Star restaurant with gorgeous views.
The history of Streeterville dates back to the late 1800’s with George Wellington “Cap” Streeter—he was thrown behind bars. However, the long term impact Cap Streeter made on development in Streeterville is significant. In 1886 after a bad storm pushed Streeter’s boat into a sandbar, he and his wife chose to live on the boat and claim the area surrounding their boat. Streeter quickly became infamous for his real estate scheme and eccentricity. He allegedly tried to obtain 186 acres of Lake Michigan Shoreline illegally. After a series of eviction attempts, Streeter was thrown behind bars. To this day, a bronze statue of Streeter by artist Dennis Downes stands in the neighborhood. Today, Streeterville is full of fun for the whole family. Navy Pier—Chicago’s largest tourist destination— is home to the Ferris Wheel, Chicago Children’s Museum, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, theaters, and several restaurants and shops. There’s far more in this area worthy of an extended day in the neighborhood.

For every bar sold, Sol Food donates a bar to someone in need of soap and clean water. Available at solfoodsoaps.com. THE BEAUTY ISSUE TIPS AND TRICKS
BROW BEAT Use a clear or tinted brow gel over your eyebrow pencil or eyebrow shadow to set the brows.
EYES Use an eye primer and powder under your eye shadow to avoid any melting, creasing eyeshadow. Heatproof/waterproof your eyeliner, using a long-wearing liquid or gel liner. Use either a waterproof mascara to finish the look.
In Chicago, we look forward to the hot summer months but the heat and humidity present special challenges for the longevity of our makeup. Read some tips to beat the heat and remain fresh and beautiful all day. by Jill Glaser
BLUSH ABOUT IT. Apply a creambased blush that will leave a long-lasting stain to keep you looking “flushed” all day.
PUCKER UP! Be sure to exfoliate the lips with a lip scrub. Skip the lipstick and instead apply a long-lasting, non-drying liquid that will beat the heat.

BEAT the HEAT
PREP THE CANVAS! For all skin types, exfoliate and moisturize at night. In the morning, apply a light moisturizer that contains sun protection. For oily skin, be sure to use an oil control, anti-shine product as needed, under the primer and/or foundation. With respect to all skin types, apply a primer in a thin layer to make sure the foundation will look smoother and last longer. Select either a lightweight foundation, wax or silicone-based foundations. They are especially good in the summer months since they have a very high melting point. Apply a translucent powder with a powder puff (not a brush) to set the face, and then brush away the excess. Lightly spritz the face with an alcohol setting spray; the alcohol will set the makeup until it’s time to take it off.

THE BEAUTY ISSUE BODY IMAGE Raise your hand if you’ve ever pinched your stomach for fat, compared yourself to someone else or felt inadequate after looking at social media and magazines. It’s okay, you’re not alone, my hand is raised too. When you live in a body that’s constantly labeled as “flawed” and “undesirable,” maintaining a positive sense of self can be tricky.

Body Positive Movement I M P R O V I N G Y O U R BODY IMAGE IN A B EAU T Y- O B S E S S E D SOCIE TY by Dãsha Guyton
Sure, logic would dictate that we shouldn’t care about the mainstream media. We should know that most images we see are unrealistic and edited. We should know that our worth has nothing to do with our dress size. Unfortunately, when you’re repeatedly told that there’s something wrong with you, logic rarely prevails. For me, that’s where the body positive movement comes in. It’s living proof that despite all the negativity around you, you can create change internally. Whether you are a size six or a size 26, the key to loving your body lies in changing how you perceive it, instead of changing its appearance. How do you shift this perception when you’ve been hating and criticizing yours for so long?
26
chicago woman
J U LY/ AUGUS T 2 0 1 7
FORGIVE YOUR BODY. When you spend years of your life trying to change your body’s appearance and criticizing the way it looks, you probably didn’t treat it kindly. Let’s face it, the perfect body doesn’t exist. Unrealistic standards created by media and society aren’t representing any kind of beauty. They are designed to sell. When you feel bad about yourself, you are more likely to buy their products. If you want to love your body, you should start by forgiving it for not being perfect.
FOCUS ON THE AMAZING FUNCTIONS OF YOUR BODY. Despite everything your body has been through, it functions. So instead of obsessing over how it looks, you can focus on the benefits it gives you. Think about the things your body does for you every single day and the goals you accomplish with it.
DEVELOP POSITIVE SELF-TALK. Challenge your negative thoughts and use positive daily affirmations like, “I will be kind for my body today” or “I will like my body today just the way it is.” Over time, with enough intention your positive affirmations will become your reality. Start a list of positive aspects of your body to refute the negative

HOME SCHEDULE things you’re telling yourself. Instead of saying “I hate my body shape,” try saying “I’m grateful I have a healthy body. I’m grateful I can go for a run or carry my child.” You may not be perfect, but who says you have to be?
EMBRACE YOUR BODY. After years of battling with my own body image, I can now look in the mirror and be happy with my reflection, I can walk the runway in fashion shows, I can even take boudoir photos because I have found peace. Not in changing my body, but in changing the way I perceive myself. Being beautiful and having a positive body image is a feeling that comes from within and deserves to be unlocked. Loving your body is hard, but the process is gratifying and so worth it. cw Dãsha Guyton is a Chicago-based fashion stylist and lifestyle blogger. he first half of 2017 has seen major changes in philanthropy, in how people give and how foundations respond. Funders are embracing rapid-response grants for more immediate impact and flexibility. Individuals are turning to philanthropy to respond to current events. A flood of first-time donors helped the American Liberties Civil Union break its fundraising record in a single weekend following an Executive Order barring refugees from the United States. Planned Parenthood donations have surged in the wake of national efforts to defund the reproductive health provider.
Empowering women to view themselves as philanthropists with the power to make positive change was a motivating factor for CFW’s founding mothers.
This political moment is shaping a new generation of activists and philanthropists.
At Chicago Foundation for Women, we’ve experienced an outpouring of support for gender equity, from new volunteers to record levels of civic engagement and local activism. We are also seeing the emergence of a new generation of women philanthropists. Many of these young women sought out the Young Women’s Giving Council as a way to support gender equity and build community following the November election. “I had just moved to Chicago and I was feeling frustrated after the election. Young Women’s Giving Council members are at the beginning of their careers, their best days and greatest earning power ahead of them. They are the beneficiaries of our founder’s efforts to create infrastructure to amplify women’s giving, and to make philanthropy more diverse and democratic. TECH LEADERS INTERVIEW
Lakshmi Shenoy Lakshmi Shenoy holds the coveted role of Vice President of Strategy & Business Development at 1871, where she’s helped transform it into one of the nation’s hottest tech entrepreneurial hubs. Interview by Becky Carroll HOW DID YOU LAND AT 1871? Most of my career has been spent growing Fortune 500 brands and as a strategy consultant. While that work was meaningful, I was eager to make a significant local impact. The opportunity at 1871 blended my love for Chicago with my experience helping organizations grow. Three years in, I’m proud of the growth our 1871 team has fostered for Chicago’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. WITH RECENT STORIES ABOUT SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND GENDER GAPS IN TECH, HOW DOES THE CULTURE AT 1871 ENSURE WOMEN ARE GIVEN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY? At 1871, being inclusive is not just a mindset, it’s a behavior. We’ve taken deliberate actions to ensure we support underrepresented entrepreneurs, including women, in everything we do—including our 1871 team, membership, events, and anyone engaged with 1871 activities. I was part of the team that launched WiSTEM in 2015 (1871’s women founder pre-accelerator). These WiSTEM women have gone on to become success stories,
leaders and mentors in Chicago’s tech and entrepreneurship community. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WOMEN-LED 1871 TECH STARTUP? I’m a huge fan of Baloonr, which was part of the first WiSTEM cohort. CEO Amanda Greenberg has created a technology which helps to remove bias from group work and decision making, ensuring that even if you aren’t the loudest voice in the room, the best ideas rise to the top. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IN TECH? I’ve seen the power of advocacy and a strong network, so commit to being a “hype woman” for other female founders. It’s not just the right thing to do, you will reap benefits for your own brand and business. WHAT WILL YOUR PERSONAL NARRATIVE BE 10 YEARS FROM NOW? It will continue to include leadership, impact and giving back to the community. cw
Becky Carroll is a two-decade veteran of high-profile political and public policy campaigns, serving in various roles in the Illinois Office of the Governor, Chicago Mayor’s Office, and the 2008 Obama for President Campaign, where she served as National Director of Women for Obama. She’s now president and CEO of C-Strategies LLC, a strategic consulting and public affairs firm.

ILIANA A. MORA PRESIDENT AND CEO, WOMEN EMPLOYED Women Employed serves a key group of people making our world go around: women in the workplace. Their work aims to improve working women’s economic security through creation of policy, protection of rights and focus on education as a means of economic advancement. With Iliana at the helm, they fight for all women, regardless of where they are on the economic ladder. On WE’s docket right now: Working to pass the “No Salary History” bill to help reduce the wage gap that starts in the hiring process itself.
ILIANA A. MORA
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT YOUR WORK?
Even early in my life, I was drawn to the concept of equality. That drive for equality and achieving social justice are really what has been leading me through my career. I love knowing when I wake up every day that I have a responsibility to try to make the workplace and ultimately, our city, our state, our country a better place for all women regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, religion and economic status. WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL MISSION? I was very much
moved by the resurgence of activism of women in particular after the election saying we have certain rights, we want to make sure those are protected, and we want to be a part of the change that continues to make progress. I was given the opportunity to make this my work, and my personal mission is to continue to fight for that and make it a reality. It’s a gift that my job is to make the workplace more fair and free of discrimination for all women. That is eternally motivating.
GAIL SPREEN
WHAT IS YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE? Don’t wait to get promoted. Don’t wait to be put on a challenging assignment. Ask for it— even if you don’t feel you meet all the criteria. No one is ever 100 percent qualified for a job. Go for it! cw

LAUREL RUNDLE CO-FOUNDER AND MANAGING PARTNER A HA! MARKETING As Laurel wears her many hats—from marketing guru to volunteer—her zest for life shines through every endeavor. At A Ha! Marketing, Laurel’s day job, she and her team focus on direct-toconsumer marketing. They cultivate “brand recommenders”—primarily health, wellness, nutrition and pet experts or professionals who recommend her clients’ brands. WHAT IS DIFFERENTIATING ABOUT THIS TYPE OF MARKETING? This business taps into consumer behavior and the way people receive messages. We really believe in the power of one-to-one communication—I have a lot of passion around it. WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES OR CAUSES ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? We also founded All for
Schools—an online fundraising portal that allows parents and community members to earn money for their schools through everyday shopping. You go online, pick your school, and when you do your shopping online, the school gets a cut, and you get a cut as well. I’m also Vice Chair of the Entrepreneur Group of the Union League of Chicago. We meet monthly and really hit on issues that are relevant to entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs. About four years ago I co-founded the auxiliary board of Lydia Home and Safe Families—a national organization that serves at-risk kids. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?
I tend to like to take risks. Merging two of my passions—running a company and working with organizations that need help—really motivates me and aligns with my passion around health and wellness. WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED? Embrace your fear and move through it—it gets better. I often have to remind myself out loud to be fearless. Also, I really do think when you’re closely aligned to what you love, you’ll be successful—remember that and keep at it. cw

I’ve been in residential real estate for more than 20 years, and every day is different. Every property and buyer are different, and it’s highly interesting to watch the ever-evolving market trends continue to change and see how that impacts the community. THE F IER CE FI FTY O VER 50
There is a generation of women who are relishing midlife with a deep desire to share the wisdom from their collective life experiences. They continue to be creators in remarkable careers, or embrace the opportunity to reinvent themselves in their passion. These are the women that The Fierce 50 Revolution and Chicago Woman Magazine recognizes for their example and inspirationÂ. Whether they are local or international leaders, these women are from all walks of life and are leaving a distinctive mark on the world, while paving new paths for the women that follow behind. They are visionaries, changemakers, and entrepreneurs and they have never been more relevant. We asked them what makes them fierce at this time in their lives and acknowledge why women on the main stage are fierce. Foreword by Catherine Grace O’Connell, Founder, The Fierce 50 Revolution

“My husband died 2 months before my 50 birthday. I had a 10 year-old boy to raise and a life to pull back together and reboot without him. Over the past 7 years I have made the many difficult decisions it takes to raise a young boy without the benefit of a male partner. You have to be fierce, you have to be strong. You have to pull not only for yourself but for a son who’s lost his role model. I have worked hard to balance my life and his, being a mom and trying to think like a dad would, supporting his growth while staying on my own path. I just remounted a show I’ve been working on a for a long time, Deconstructing La Diva. It follows the evolution of the Diva from Opera to the Grammy’s. A lavish journey through the musical signatures and colorful careers of the iconic women who help define the Diva; Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Tina Turner, Amy Winehouse, etc. At the core, it’s about female empowerment. About speaking out, speaking up, taking control and playing your own tune. My son considers me a success because I have never given up on my music. FOUNDER AND PARTNER, JUST CAUSE
PRESIDENT, EXECUTIVES CLUB OF CHICAGO
“My priority is creating equal opportunities for women, making sure that they have a place at the table. I am motivated by tikkun olam, the Jewish belief that we each have a responsibility to do our best to repair the world and leave it better than we found it.”
PRESIDENT, TUSK MONTGOMERY PHILANTHROPIES
I have never been afraid of taking (responsible) risks and stepping up to new challenges and responsibilities. I moved to different countries and opened businesses in countries and cultures I barely knew. I always ask myself “what’s the worst thing that can happen?” before trying something new. And, as I say to my own daughters, provided the answer to that question doesn’t involve death, jail or bankruptcy, “just do it”.
I am fiercely passionate, and I always have been, about my work. I have been fortunate to have jobs I love and that I believe can make a difference in improving the lives of others.
PRESIDENT AND CEO, DUSABLE MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
SHEILA NIX
KARA KENNEDY
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, LUMITY I’m more committed today than ever before to go after what is really important to me and not settle for less than what I know is possible. I’m no longer afraid to “hold back” or of “being too much” when it comes to fighting for what I believe in and in reaching my goals. Holding high standards and seeing the possibilities in myself and others takes courage when we’re taught to not rock the boat and our brains are wired to keep us comfortable (and settle for the status quo). A colleague shared with me that I’m a force to be reckoned with when I have a vision of what I want. I can live with that.
PERRI IRMER
“My skill as a networker and strategist, my decades-long professional and personal relationships built on a reputation for personal integrity, hard work, and a commitment to public service. I’m also comfortable in my own skin and with my personality—outspoken, honest and humorous-- which isn’t changing at this point in my life!”
JULIE COLBRESE CERTIFIED COACH AND SPEAKER
I didn’t start out fierce. When my husband died of Hodgkin’s disease at 37 and I woke up the next morning, a 34-year-old widow with a 5 and 3-year-old, I got fierce. That experience, for how horrible it was, tapped into something I didn’t know was there. I created a family out of the three of us and a life for myself that is pretty great right now.

OWNER, STONEBRIDGE WEALTH ADVISORS, FOUNDER, RICH WOMEN ROCK What truly makes me fierce is that I have been able to pursue a career that I love and that fulfills me while also enjoying the privilege of raising a family. There have been tough moments along the way, but I’ve been able to make it work because of the unwavering support of my husband, David.
VENITA FIELDS
PARTNER, PELHAM S2K MANAGERS, LLC What makes me fierce is that I am fearless. I am not afraid to tackle new challenges and look at them as opportunities to create positive change in many arenas; in school and other not-for profit organizations, in family life, in the community and church. I rarely take no for an answer and look for ways to get to yes. Lastly, I am not a procrastinator. I prefer to move forward, gathering people and resources to solve a problem.
SOHEILA GHOFRANI OWNER, THE DRESS DOCTOR
“People say that your job should not define you, but in my case I disagree. My business is a huge part of who I am. I love waking up in the morning and going to work. This is partly because my viewpoint is still like it was in my twenties when I first bought this business. I’m always looking toward the future and I’m always up for a challenge. And I don’t drink rum and dem tings.”
ANGELA MERKEL Named Most Powerful Woman in the World by Forbes Magazine in 2016, Merkel has been a leading figure in international politics since taking office as Chancellor of Germany in 2005. WARDROBE STYLIST, STYLE CONSULTANT, FASHION HUSTLER I find it hard to call or view myself as “fierce,” but I suppose what makes me different is that I have always just been myself. I have a strong sense of identity and I really own my personal style. I have never been afraid to stand out and I always wear what I love regardless of what those around me are doing. I have always refused to water down my style or personality for the expectations of my peers or community (this was especially difficult for me growing up in the South). DIANA PALOMAR
VICE PRESIDENT, COMMUNITY AFFAIRS, ABC 7 CHICAGO Fierce, for me, means being confident, self-assured, and not afraid. I had a very tumultuous childhood with loving parents who were battling their own demons. My life has seen much heartache, loss of close loved ones, some tragic, all before turning 50. But rather than being fearful of any further unknowns, or wallow in sorrow for what I have lost and the dramatic changes to my life, I choose to stay positive, strong of spirit and grateful. I have come through quite a lot and am proud of myself for doing so, always a bit better and stronger. I am passionate about life and those I love, and I think that makes me fierce.

KAREN MCGUIGAN GENERAL MANAGER, HYATT CENTRIC CHICAGO
Even as a young girl, I wouldn’t let anything stop me, as my parents can certainly attest, sometimes much to their dismay. I was the only girl in my math class at Lane Tech High School in Roscoe Village when I attended just three years after they began accepting female students. I took full advantage of what that could offer me, paving the way in very non-traditional female courses like auto shop and drafting. Being in a male dominated world for the first time, this showed me the true meaning of “girl power” when I could undertake and complete any task just like any other male classmate. I translate this to the tenacity it has taken for me to climb the corporate ladder. As a woman in a managerial position, I can confidently say that, at Hyatt, the only glass ceilings are in our ballrooms! While maintaining my home life as a wife and mother, I moved my way through the professional ranks from front desk to middle management to general manager with hard work, long hours, and persistence…and literal blood, sweat, and tears. I will never forget my first guest call as a hotel manager, which involved breaking up a mud-wrestling event in a suite—talk about fierce!
COURTNEY WRIGHT
OWNER, GEMINI BUILDS IT When I hear women talk about how they are getting it all done, balancing a social, professional and family social calendar with a smile ... that is fierce. To me they are doing what they love, surrounded by a strong network and have figured out a way to keep the ugly out. Fierce is confidence, accepting failure and keeping an eye on the prize and the next level. Fierce women stand out in the room. The three fierce women I admire are my mom,Paula Doherty the most loving, caring, supportive, giving lady ever, Adaire Heistand, not 50 but close and a rockstar mom and incredible worker for the community and Myra Kirby, my bestie from high school and the ultimate decorato.

I go full steam ahead in an effort to change the status quo!

Susan Brunstrum on
FOLLOWING YOUR PASSION Thirty seven years ago, the Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois told me not to purse a degree in architecture because “it wasn’t a good career for a woman.” It didn’t matter to him that I had excelled in drafting, design and art classes in high school or that it was my passion. He could not see beyond my gender. “Only two percent of the architecture students are women, you will not fit in or succeed,” he said. Although my gut told me he was wrong, I was 17 and I listened to him. Instead, I majored in marketing, and earned a masters degree in advertising. I had a successful corporate career and then I started my own marketing and communications firm that also did well. My work was fulfilling and my other career dream faded. Then at age 38, my world fell apart. My husband was diagnosed with colon cancer and six weeks later, he was dead. Suddenly, I was a single mom with two young children to raise on my own. The next few years were devastating as I worked my way through the pain. However, when your worst fear happens and you survive and rebound, it is also empowering. I looked in the mirror and I saw a different person. I no longer feared change, I was ready to embrace it. I decided to open my own interior design business. Shortly before my husband died, we had built a home. I oversaw the project and it rekindled my old dream of creating beautiful spaces. Launching not only a new business but also a new career was risky because I had two kids to support. Many discouraged me. Unlike when I was 17, I no longer needed the approval of others. This time, I listened to my gut and my gut told me, do it. I began working out of my suburban home and then opened a studio in the suburbs. After my kids went to college, I moved myself and my business to the city. Today at age 55, instead of slowing down, I am expanding my design firm and taking it to the next level. Part of the reason I have succeeded is because I understand transition and change. This is what people are looking for when they hire an interior designer firm. They want to redesign their homes just as I redesigned my life.
SIX TIPS WHEN LAUNCHING A “SECOND” CAREER. 1). T ake a risk. If you love what you are doing, you will find a way to earn a living doing it. 2). A ccept that you may fail and be okay with that possibility. Failure is only temporary and you will rebound. 3). D on’t get sidetracked by what others in your field are doing. Focus on yourself and your work. With social media, it is easy to be overly influenced by others. 4). G et input from people outside your immediate circle of friends and family. Outsiders can offer more unbiased advice. 5). Seek and accept help. 6). Be open to where the path takes you. Successful people and businesses are always evolving.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT MICRO BLADING IS. Micro blading is a semi-permanent brow tattoo applied with hair-like strokes to enhance the brow and create an incredibly natural look! Once your brows have healed, they look so natural and full that you need little to no brow makeup.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE AND HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? The process usually takes an hour or less. You will usually come back once or twice for a few weeks after the first application due to fading from the organic pigment.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GETTING THIS TREATMENT? You’ll receive a full and shapely that defines the face shape by enhancing the definition of the brow. Your brows will look amazing each day and much more
full than without the treatment making your makeup routine time a little shorter in the morning.
WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES TO GET MICRO BLADING? Thinning, over-tweezed, and sparse brows. Cancer patients also benefit greatly from this cosmetic procedure as well!
WHAT IS THE COST AND HOW LONG DOES IT LAST? The initial cost is $500 and it can last for years with continued maintenance and touch ups.
IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME AND HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO YOU NEED? There is very minimal downtime! Redness and some superficial swelling can occur, but it really depends on the person and how their body metabolizes the pigment.

MAKING A MODERN MARRIAGE LAST by Anne Brennan Malec, Psychologist, & Marriage and Family Therapist
Being part of a successful and loving relationship is one of the most rewarding aspects of life. If you asked random people what they most hoped to have in life, no doubt a joyful marriage would be among the top answers. If people crave a happy relationship, why do so many struggle and fail to maintain the relationship for a lifetime? Because it is not easy. During the early days and months of a relationship, known as the infatuation stage, partners can be under the false impression that a relationship will always be so effortless. But when infatuation inevitably diminishes and real life intrudes, your partner must remain a priority, or you will eventually run into trouble. Most relationship success is based on joint commitment and the partners’ relationship skills or lack thereof. The good news here is that being successful in your relationships does not require magic. The behaviors, skills, and attitudes you need can be learned. Do not think of it as work but as a necessary nurturing of your most valuable asset. You can develop the skills to succeed and thrive in your marriage, and it is never too late to learn. Divorced couples report a myriad of poor relationship habits leading to steady and persistent disconnection that leads to the failure of their marriages. Those include unmet emotional needs, infidelity, incompatibility, drinking/ drug use, poor communication patterns, financial issues, high levels of conflict, unreasonable expectations, and a lack of prioritization of one’s partner and the relationship. Such poor relationship habits stem from the false belief that marriage should not require work. The reasons for marrying in previous centuries arose from pragmatic needs: financial support, societal pressure, social standing, religion, procreation, or the merging of family interests. But today, marriage is romanticized as a choice made solely out of love. Marriage is not an automatic happilyever-after but a journey toward fulfillment that requires active participation by both parties. An intimate relationship is a living, breathing organism that requires nurturing, feeding, and care. Why do people lose sight of this? Because human beings get used to all
that is good in their lives; that is, we habituate.

ASK THE DENTIST
Q
I hate flossing my teeth, do I really need to floss everyday?
have, my first response is “You should have been flossing for the last 10 years”. Finally, flossing helps eliminate bad breath by again removing the bacteria in the mouth not reached by a toothbrush. As the bacteria flourish, they give off a noticeable, unpleasant odor. The more bacteria removed, the fresher your breath smells.
The short answer: Yes.
The long answer: Yes, and here is why. I feel the benefits of flossing have three components. After I educate patients on all three, they understand why they should be flossing and it is no longer optional or dreaded.
Quick tip: 80% of bad breath originates from the bacteria on your tongue. Please consider adding tongue brushing, along with flossing, to your daily routine.
First, flossing helps remove harmful bacteria from between the teeth. The only place the toothbrush cannot clean is where teeth contact each other. Flossing helps prevent cavities in between teeth, and also helps keep any existing fillings between teeth healthy.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION TIPS FOR HAPPIER RELATIONSHIPS
WHY TRAVEL ADVISORS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK
By Gemma Allen The daily household routine with squabbles over money, work and children can take its toll on a relationship. Those minor spats and squabbles can easily escalate into full-blown fights unless you have good communication skills and a willingness to use them thoughtfully. Here are some tips.
CREATE A ROADMAP FOR DISCUSSION AND DECISIONS. Disagreement doesn’t have to be inevitable if you know each other’s basic wants and fears and have a basic map for navigating through them. Conflict can be soothed with compromise.
KNOW THAT WHEN IT COMES TO CONFLICT, THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER. Your financial advisor may have created an investment plan, or your lawyer may have drawn up a pre-nup, but no outsider can create a structure that will mediate your everyday money decisions. Be gentle with each other. We all have financial foibles.
REMEMBER THAT TIMING IS EVERYTHING. Your attempts to work out differences require one or more conversations that may continue periodically for weeks or months. Find a quiet, comfortable place to talk, listen carefully to each other, and share your feelings without judging. Agree on a time to reconvene if emotions run hot. Successful communication improves relationships by increasing intimacy and trust. Investing time and effort into resolving differences can lead to a long and lasting partnership.

The internet created many DIY travelers with access to Orbitz, Travelocity, Airbnb and others. Travel advisors actually like that their clients are doing research as the client comes in with ideas of what they want and this enables the advisor to get to know them better. But time is one of your most precious commodities and research shows that the average traveler combs through 38 travel websites! Today’s travel advisor has changed from a transactional relationship to something much more personal. We want to get to know our clients the same as a financial advisor would. We want to share our expertise, knowledge and deep connections in the industry. We are your advocate so when something goes wrong, and it inevitably does, you don’t have to call 1-800- ORBITZ. We are there to iron out problems– sometimes before you even know you have one! A good travel advisor can get you upgrades and other perks that stretch your budget. We can help you feel confident that your trip is going to meet your expectations and hopefully go beyond. A really good advisor can get you things you didn’t even know you could ask for. We are experts at planning and executing experiences that you can’t Google. On top of that, many advisors don’t charge a fee to the client—they are paid by suppliers. Receiving this level of customer service without paying anything is one of the best deals out there. To find a good travel advisor ask your friends for referrals. Check out an agent finder such as American Society of Travel Agents (travelsense.org) or a consortium such as Virtuoso (Virtuoso.com/advisors). You can check out some of my reviews there under Kathryn Schutz! And for trip ideas on one web page go to kathryntheodoretravel.com/inspiration.

FOODGASM!
True Inspiration Comes from Our Most Indulgent Experiences As the weather warms, I find myself enveloped in the desire to “Be”…outside, taking in the sun, wearing the cutest of summer outfits, and of course, dining al fresco! I think about the freshness of summer ingredients, the brightness of freshly picked herbs, and of course, perfectly grilled Scottish Salmon. Chef Shauna (featured on the cover) relishes the selection of fine ingredients, the careful preparation and expert techniques that go into the various components of her meals and snacks, and of course, whimsically plating her dishes so that customers cannot wait to dive into that first bite. In the world of prepared meals, this is truly unique. When she started this company, she vowed to always display the indulgence of eating well-crafted, imaginative, and flavorful food in the forefront. FitFoodie is not simply a provider of sustenance. They are not OK, with you feeling like you are just satiated. They want you to feel like you have just done something naughty by eating Fit Foodie. Life is already full of compromise, so let eating be your indulgence. They’ve actually made it safe for you to do so. Their gluten- and dairy-free food is inspired by indulgence, but it is oh so good for you.
At Fit Foodie, the experience of eating our meals drives everything we do. We love food and feel your daily eating experience should be truly exciting… not bland, boring and status quo! Who says you have to swap indulgence for “good for you”! So get that body summer ready, put on your favorite sundress or short shorts, and breathe in the good times… it only lasts a few months, you know. My favorite summer menu item: Coffee Garlic Grilled Chimichurri Flank Steak. –C hef Shauna, Owner & Executive Chef The Fit Foodie Kitchen
THE KEY TO ACTIVE AND PAIN-FREE AGING:
YOU NEED THE KNOWLEDGE In ten years of treating fitness obsessed Chicagoans, I have seen a consistent and alarming pattern. The overwhelming sentiment in the world of group fitness is “push harder”, because “success” feels like getting your butt kicked! I don’t know where this idea started, but now every other person who comes to my clinic has an overuse injury grinding their workouts to a halt, and it’s a direct result of pushing past their limits without any sense of what it means to properly warm up before, recover after, or maintain their bodies during their intense weekly fitness schedules. This epidemic is directly linked to a lack of understanding about proper form during exercise and a failure to perceive when the limits of our bodies have been surpassed. That’s why I developed CorEx™ as one of the three components of the TRIFACTIVE Method™ for quickly
and completely treating chronic injuries and improving athletic performance. CorEx™ is the part of my program that teaches clients how to improve their posture through proper breathing, core contraction sequencing, and pelvic stabilization. When our clients use this unique and proprietary system, they can easily determine when they are using too much weight to maintain proper form, as well as get more from their workouts and see optimal results. This isn’t rocket science! We just don’t learn how it all works when we are in school. So at TRIFACTIVE Sports Injury + Performance Clinic, we have made it our mission to bridge the learning gap so that our clients can experience true success in their fitness. Visit www.trifactive.com to learn more about this life-changing system.

JIMMY LEE
CEO, GOODCITY PROFESSIONAL ROOTS. I have served in several capacities with nonprofit organizations and government institutions inclduing the Office of the Governor under Governor Ryan, the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, the White House under the Bush Administration, and now in my fifth year running Goodcity. THE STORY BEHIND GOODCITY. Goodcity was launched 30 years ago as an incubator of nonprofits making a difference in under resourced communities. The founders of the organization believed the best people to solve problems in a community are the residents that lived in the community. Goodcity came alongside each of these individuals to help them launch nonprofit organizations. Since then, we have helped launch close to 400 organizations in our city. ABOUT GOODCITY. Goodcity is a human investment organization committed to identifying and supporting high potential female and minority entrepreneurs as they launch and scale sustainable for- and not-for-profit enterprises. At the core, we believe that it is the individual behind both the success and impact of an organization. We provide both human capital and financial capital assistance for individuals and organizations who come into our network. We also provide $500 to $2,500 grants to entrepreneurs with the best ideas and the boldness to act, $25,000 grants and investments to entrepreneurs working to build out their non- and for- profit ventures and will soon be providing $100,000 grants and investments to entrepreneurs seeking to scale their businesses.

impact orientation, and sustainability. We believe we can make an impact by supporting and developing minority and female leaders who serve as entrepreneurial change agents. This demographic is often overlooked when trying to gain access to funding. These same individuals are the ones making a difference in their community. We take great pride in that. We are most proud of the impact we have had in Chicago and in particular, this demographic.
SNAP SHOT OF A PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATION. We look for entrepreneurs with the best ideas, boldness to pursue, willingness to learn and capacity for growth. We support business ideas that are sustainable. We count our investments most effective when the organization or business exceeds the five-year mark.
We have been able to do all this without much support from the State government, making it so it is easily replicated in other cities. Our biggest hope for the future is to be throughout the country. To see this success across the nation would be incredible. cw
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS. Everything we do at Goodcity is motivated by our core values of human centricity,

WHEN OBSTACLES BECOME OPPORUNTITIES By Loretta Rosemayer
I
t is said that we become like the five people we spend the most time with. Strong women surround themselves with people who sharpen and empower them. I was - and still am - blessed to have those people in my life. However, there are times when we work in non-traditional industries where those role models seem scarce. As the founder and CEO of Intren, a WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise) utility specialty contractor, my entry into the utility industry was purely accidental; I was desperately looking for a way to earn money to support my family. Rather than crumble under pressure, I chose to take that imperfect moment and focus on what I needed in response to the challenge. I’ve always been an advocate for building key relationships. Traditional methods of receiving information are simply not enough to provide you with the inside knowledge you need to navigate any career successfully. It was a friend who was retiring that introduced me to my career and provided me with the information and resources I needed to begin my entry into the utility industry. I have since stayed connected with other role models and colleagues through the Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC), which provides a powerful connection for women entrepreneurs helping them to secure entry into industries; connections that are often near impossible to gain entry on their own efforts. What surprised me in the early years of my career was how open and intrigued the utility industry was to me as one of few women business owners in the energy arena. It’s filled with fair, open-minded individuals in positions of power, who go out of their way to serve as exemplary role models. Our industry is a dangerous business; one that cannot be taken
lightly. Once I established my steadfast commitment to safety, and demonstrated my personal integrity, and ability to foster trust rather than demand it, I quickly earned the respect of my colleagues— regardless of gender. One of the biggest challenges for women in male-dominated industries is getting past the perception that certain jobs– especially in management–are “male positions.” We need to embrace our talents, as well as our skills, confidently, respectively and assertively. Once the industry trusted that I had what it took to get the job done, it empowered me to move aggressively toward my goals. I have a passion for supporting and empowering others, and it has been a great joy to me to build a culture of stewardship within my company. I’ve been entrusted to lead and serve and I must manage this with great care, especially as a WBE. This vibrant, dynamic community has changed my life and I am honored to be a part of it. cw

You say Rosé, I say Rosato! The French call it rosé, in Spain Rosado, in Italy, Rosato. The “Pink Season” is here as people enjoy summer’s “pink drink” rosé. Popular due to its excellent value and broad taste options, rosé has its own hashtag: #summerwater. From soft, blush shades to hot fuchsia hues, rosé color depends on the red grape varietal and time grape skins remain in contact with the juice. The shorter the contact time, the lighter the wine color. Rosés are sweet, off-dry or bone dry in taste and the perennial patio or porch pounder. A versatile food pairing wine, enjoy rosé when it is too warm to drink red wine with a steak. Looking for rosé to serve with summer fare? Choose semi-dry instead of sweet to enjoy barbecued chicken, grilled salmon, fresh fruit or potato salad, flame roasted veggies, even corn on the cob. Salute! —Consuelo Martinez-Quattrocchi

LIFE HEALTH + WELLNESS
Spice Things Up! By Lauren Cohn
We often ask trusted friends and practitioners “what do you do to stay healthy and fit?” The usual answer is a new workout routine or diet. But some simple additions to your nutrition plan can make an impact on your wellness. So spice up your life with these four kitchen staples.
turmeric cayenne
cinnamon ginger This root packs a powerful punch. It’s known to help aid digestion, reduce nausea and inflammation. In the colder months, drink ginger tea daily after meals. In the warmer months, try a ginger-lemonade. 58
chicago woman
J U LY/ AUGUS T 2 0 1 7
Many health experts claim it helps control blood sugar levels. It can help suppress cravings—and even be a sweet tooth substitute. Baking apples & pears with cinnamon makes for a delicious sweet treat. It’s also great on sweet potatoes, which are packed with potassium and iron, and in smoothies.
Not only is this a go-to detoxifier, it is great for nasal congestion and to add to food or a ginger-lemonade recipe. It is often used to prepare spicy meals—yes, some like it hot— but start out in moderation.
It is often used in traditional Indian and Asian dishes and referred to as an anti-inflammatory wonder. Add it to soups and stews. It may help with inflammation and pain after a strenuous workout. In pill form it’s more potent and is often advised as part of alternative medicine therapy for athletes and women going through menopause.
Lauren Cohn is a Veteran TV News Anchor/Reporter and Radio Host in Chicago who has covered the Health Beat for decades and a certified holistic health coach. As always, consult with your doctor before changing your diet regimen. To learn more and find recipes related to adding spices into your wellness plan, please visit laurencohnreports.com/health.

PAYING IT FORWARD WHITNEY’S WOMEN
WITH THE 4TH OF JULY UPON US WE WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT A WOMAN THAT HAS MADE A HUGE IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF VETERANS AND BEYOND THROUGH HER FAMILY FOUNDATION. MEET CONNIE PAYTON, WIFE OF THE LATE BEARS SUPERSTAR WALTER PAYTON. TOGETHER, THEY FOUNDED THE WALTER AND CONNIE PAYTON FOUNDATION, A NONPROFIT THAT BELIEVES IN THE QUIET GRACE OF GIVING. THE FOUNDATION WORKS BEHIND THE SCENES TO BRING THOUSANDS OF SMILES TO PEOPLE NOT ONLY IN CHICAGO BUT ACROSS THE UNITED STATES.
Interview by Whitney Reynolds
TELL US ABOUT YOUR VETERAN PROJECT. I was invited to speak at an event for veterans. While visiting with a few of them that served in World War II, we started to discuss many veterans’ need for food, housing with air conditioning and heat in the winter and getting to appointments for health care. It was just a good conversation and you know these men are so proud to out right ask for help. This really stuck with myself and my foundation director, Kelly. Through a friend we met

the team at Concord Assisted Living and the idea to help in need veterans was borne. We took the empty rooms at Concord and found sponsors, business and community members to furnish the room. All we needed was our vets. Word spread fast and we filled our rooms quickly. Today the program is self-running. We still replace things needed in the rooms with a grant from Rolling Thunder and private donors that ask for their donation to go towards the veteran program. We also have many schools that participate in our Veterans’ Day drive. This allows us to stock the free store in the building with toilet paper, Kleenex, soap, shampoo, towels, sheets, laundry detergent, etc. and what
they need for daily hygiene. The other great thing about Concord is that it’s closer to Hines VA Hospital and the bus gets our veterans to appointments. YOUR FOUNDATION TALKS A LOT ABOUT DIGNITY, WHAT DOES THAT WORD MEAN TO YOU? Helping those in need without judgement and without self-reward. Everyone needs help at some point in their life. The meaning of dignity is “the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect.” I wish everyone in this world treated their neighbor with dignity. WORDS T O LIVE BY
“Knowing you have made a difference is life’s greatest reward.” -C ON N IE PAYT ON
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO KEEP THE FOUNDATION IN CHICAGO? Chicago is home. I, along with Walter, have always enjoyed giving back to those in need. When the kids were
younger I was a soccer mom first while our family joined Walter for key charity events. When Walter passed I knew the charity was a passion of ours and I have always believed we have been blessed to be a blessing to others. I was thankful for having the charity to keep me busy as the kids went off to college. THE FOUNDATION GETS NATIONAL ATTENTION EVERY YEAR FOR “MAN OF THE YEAR,” HOW DID THIS EVOLVE? The league changed the NFL Man of the Year Award into the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award in 2000. It’s great that the charities get recognition they so deserve. However, I have to say I feel so blessed to have met all the incredible men and their families each year as the finalists come together during Super Bowl week. The Payton family has sure grown since 2000! Many of these young men truly are family now. For our family it is about highlighting the finalists, not our charity or our name. Walter would be so proud of all the nominees and winners that bear his name through this award. EVEN THOUGH IT’S SUMMER, WE ARE BACK TO SCHOOL SOON... TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE. This is a great drive! This started after we met some children that did not have new backpacks to start the school year. Our drive helps several communities, in the city and suburbs. The Walter and Connie Payton Foundation is a charity of in-kind donations that prefers to be silent givers to those in need. Recognition is not something we are seeking out. We hear from principals and community members that identify children or families in need.
