The Woman’s Board of the Chicago Horticultural Society is pleased to welcome you to our 46th annual plant sale.
Chicagoland Grows...........................................p. 4 Vendor Offerings................................................p. 6 Annuals...........................................................p. 18 Vegetables and Herbs.....................................p. 21
This spring, the Bloomin’ Festival features an exciting, expanded array of plants that are particularly suited to Chicago growing conditions. A marketplace offers baked goods, organic produce, pottery, and tool sharpening.
Ferns...............................................................p. 25
Billed as the Midwest’s premier plant sale, our event showcases more than 25,000 annuals, ferns, fruit and vegetable plants, geraniums, herbs, native wildflowers, ornamental grasses, perennials, roses, dahlias, shade perennials, shrubs, and vines. In consultation with Chicago Botanic Garden horticulturists, our plant sale committee has carefully selected the very best varieties to sell, whether new on the market or tried and true. Look for some of the latest Chicagoland Grows® offerings in baptisia, echinacea, polygonatum, and veronica. Stachys officinalis ‘Pink Cotton Candy’ is a “must have,” according to Richard Hawke, the Garden’s plant evaluation manager. We select sale vendors as carefully as we select the plants. A full listing of vendors, along with their offerings, appears inside this publication.
Shrubs and Trees............................................p. 36
Garden staff, members of the Woman’s Board, master gardeners, and volunteers will be on hand for the duration of the sale to advise and consult with guests. Horticulturists will give gardening demonstrations and share tips to help launch your planting efforts. Special thanks go to Bloomin’ Festival Chair Kim Visokey and Vice Chair Nancy Kurz for their amazing and energetic leadership. We applaud Manager of Plant Sales and Flower Shows Stephanie Lindemann and her assistant, Jillian Jablonski, for their vitality, dedication, and knowledge. The Garden staff was invaluable to our plant selection committee. We are so grateful to the many volunteers for their generous assistance and to Manager of Volunteer Services Judy Cashen, who organizes this effort so efficiently. Finally, kudos to Director of Visitor Events & Programs Jodi Zombolo and her staff for their creative efforts to make this event enjoyable and special for adults and children. We thank you for shopping with us, and hope you enjoy your time at Bloomin’ Festival 2012. As always, proceeds will support the Garden’s mission to promote the enjoyment, understanding, and conservation of plants and the natural world. Catherine C. Kirby President of the Woman’s Board

Chicagoland Grows Established in 1986, Chicagoland Grows® is a unique partnership among the Chicago Botanic Garden, The Morton Arboretum, and the Ornamental Growers Association of Northern Illinois (OGA), dedicated to developing, selecting, testing, and marketing a diversity of plants from landscape trees to shrubs, perennials, and grasses, all well adapted to Midwestern and equivalent landscapes. The program’s success is due to the complementary resources each of the three partners contributes to the collaboration. The Chicago Botanic Garden’s plant breeding program has contributed seven perennial selections to Chicagoland Grows, with many more perennial plants currently undergoing propagation and nursery trials, while the Garden’s plant evaluation program systematically evaluates the Chicagoland Grows plants and provides practical data such as bloom dates, disease and pest resistance, growth rates, and other ornamental attributes that are used to select and market the plants. The Morton Arboretum has contributed nine trees and six shrubs to Chicagoland Grows, with many more promising woody plants from its historic collections, plant exploration trips (both national and international), and its breeding and selection program all being evaluated for potential introduction. The individual OGA nurseries have contributed plants to the program, conduct propagation and field and container trials of potential new introductions, and are in the vanguard of bringing the program’s selections to the marketplace by growing, marketing, and selling high-quality specimens of the plants to landscape contractors, other nurseries, and garden centers throughout the Chicago region, the Midwest, and beyond. The program has licensed well over one hundred additional wholesale and retail nurseries and commercial tissue culture laboratories throughout the United States and in other countries to bring the Chicagoland Grows introductions to landscapes with comparable climates literally around the world.
Baptisia ‘Midnight’ Midnight Prairieblues™ False Indigo (2008 introduction) The plant boasts an upright, vaseshaped habit with extremely long inflorescences bearing deep blue-violet flowers. Long-lived and drought tolerant. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden, and introduced by Chicagoland Grows®. Baptisia ‘Solar Flare’ Solar Flare Prairieblues™ False Indigo (2008 introduction) This selection has a vase-shaped habit at its base with a dense broad head of attractive blue-green foliage above. Flowers initially are a lemon-yellow color, taking on a unique orange to violet blush with age. The only Baptisia on the market with this flower color! Mature plants measure 3’ to 4’ tall and 4’ to 4½’ wide. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden, and introduced by Chicagoland Grows®.
Baptisia × bicolor ‘Starlite’ Starlite Prairieblues™ False Indigo (2007 introduction) This selection boasts 24” flower stems bearing a profusion of bicolored blooms that are a lovely shade of periwinkle-blue with contrasting butter cream keels. One of the most floriferous Baptisia on the market. A medium-sized plant growing to 3’ tall by wide. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden, and introduced by Chicagoland Grows®.

Echinacea ‘Burgundy Fireworks’ Meadowbrite™ Coneflower (2011 introduction)
Polygonatum ‘Prince Charming’ Solomon’s Seal (2012 introduction)
‘Burgundy Fireworks’ at less than 18” tall by wide is more compact than many coneflower selections currently on the market. The flowering stems are a deep burgundy color in spring and fall. But most unique about this selection are the deep beet-red ray flowers, which are not only upturned, but are individually fused into quills. It’s long blooming as well. No other coneflower has this combination of traits! Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden, and introduced by Chicagoland Grows®.
This vigorous selection of Solomon’s seal produces attractive green foliage that can take on a bluish cast in full sun. Creamy-white flowers are produced in spring, followed by green berries that turn purple in autumn. The foliage turns an attractive golden yellow in autumn. A vigorous spreader, yet compact, growing only to 12” of height. Vey adaptable, grows in shade to full sun, and medium moisture to dry soils. Selected by Brent Horvath at Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, Inc., Hebron, Illinois, and co-introduced by Chicagoland Grows®.
Echinacea ‘CBG Cone2’ Pixie Meadowbrite™ Coneflower (2007 introduction) This delightful mini-coneflower yields a profusion of perky, vibrant pink blooms from July to September. It has a denser, more compact habit than typical of coneflowers, growing to 18’’ high x 20’’ to 24’’ wide. Selected especially for hardiness, drought tolerance, longevity, and garden durability to make a truly unique, petite coneflower. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden, and introduced by Chicagoland Grows®.
Veronica ‘Tidal Pool’ Prostrate Speedwell (2012 introduction) This hybrid speedwell covers itself with medium to deep blue-violet flowers from late April into midMay, then settles into an attractive, dense groundcover with small oak-like leaves the remainder of the year. Uniform and fast spreading, plants grow only 4” tall but to 3’ wide in a year or two. Will tolerate some light foot traffic. Well-drained soils recommended. Very drought tolerant. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden, and introduced by Chicagoland Grows®. Veronica ‘Whitewater’ Prostrate Speedwell (2011 introduction)
Stachys officinalis ‘Pink Cotton Candy’ Pink Cotton Candy Betony (2010 introduction) This durable and attractive plant features two-toned dark and light pink flowers, resulting in an overall vibrant bright pink floral display. Flowers are copiously produced for eight weeks from late June to late August on 12-inch upright inflorescences against a backdrop of attractive deep green foliage. Discovered at the Chicago Botanic Garden by plant evaluator Richard Hawke.
This vigorous groundcover is covered with ½”-wide glistening white flowers from late April to late June, with a peak bloom in mid-May. ‘Whitewater’ forms a dense low carpet, growing 4” to 6” tall and spreading 12” to 18” wide in a single season. The glossy dark-green leaves turn an attractive burgundy to bronze in winter months. Full sun to partial shade on a medium to dry, well drained soil is recommended. Discovered as a white-flowered branch sport of Veronica ‘Waterperry Blue’ by John Wachter at Elite Growers, Inc., Ingleside, Illinois. Co-introduced by Chicagoland Grows®.
