With people who have HCM, the heart walls become thicker and excessive thickening can lead to the heart stiffening, which can leave less room for blood to flow to the heart. People with HCM can experience loss of energy rapid heartbeat and chest pain, as well as other symptoms.

According to the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA), HMC affects between 1 in 200 people to 1 in 500 people, and affects 1.3 million people in the United States regardless of age, race and ethnicity, 80% of children who die from HCM-related complications are not athletes and often go undiagnosed.

Bill Rossi is a local entrepreneur, an HCM patient advocate and a Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA) board member who was diagnosed with the heart condition in his late 20s. Rossi, who was very athletic, noticed he was short of breath and after three weeks, he went to see his general practitioner. He was referred to a cardiologist who diagnosed him with HCM.

Rossi said that HCM is the no. 1 cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young adults. He added that oftentimes, people are misdiagnosed and treated for hypertension, when they actually have HCM. He said that early screening and early detection of HCM is important, because people can live a full life, with treatment. He said that parents with children in their early teens can ask for doctors to screen for HCM. He has had his children screened for it. He added that doctors need to ask the right questions in order to diagnose it.

Exciting Breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s and Dementia Treatment Show Promise for Those Affected

There is groundbreaking news in the world of Alzheimer’s and dementia research, with promising new treatments now on the horizon for those living with these conditions. These advancements bring hope and offer new ways to manage the disease more effectively. With multiple treatments now approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s essential for patients and their families to learn about available options and consult with doctors to make informed decisions.

McWhorter was appointed CEO in 2021, responding to the Board’s call to develop a transformation plan to strengthen the Y’s long-term impact in the communities it serves. She led the Y’s transition to a community hub model whereby services are expanded to address community needs and marketplace demands. The Y continues to offer legacy programs in sports, aquatics, fitness, and early learning, but also provides services to address chronic disease prevention, food security, jobs/skills training, mental health services, and more. This strategy helped the Y expand revenue through new partnerships, government contracts, private support, and program fees.

the YMCA Board of Managers, has been appointed Interim CEO as the Board begins a national search for McWhorter’s successor. Nelson, who joined the YMCA Board of Managers in 2020, brings a wealth of experience in strategic planning, revenue growth, and operational excellence to her role as interim CEO. She will work closely with the Y’s leadership team to ensure a seamless transition and continued progress on key initiatives. She joined UnitedHealth Group in 2000 and served in numerous leadership positions across many areas of the company before her retirement in 2019. In her most recent role as Vice President, Clinical Services, she was responsible for implementing clinical technology strategies for all UnitedHealthcare products and business lines.

“Sheila’s extensive business expertise and dedication to the Y make her the ideal choice to guide the organization during this transition,” said Sorenson.

Currently, FDA-approved medications for Alzheimer’s fall into two key categories:

1. Drugs that temporarily ease symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

2. Drugs that alter the disease’s progression, offering the potential to slow cognitive decline.

As Alzheimer’s progresses, brain cells deteriorate and lose connections, resulting in worsening cognitive and noncognitive symptoms. While medications in this category don’t stop the damage Alzheimer’s causes to brain cells, they can help stabilize or alleviate symptoms temporarily. These treatments focus on improving memory, cognition, and dementia-related behaviors. Additionally, therapies are available to address changes in sleep patterns and behavioral concerns that often arise with Alzheimer’s.

Drugs That Change Disease Progression

A new wave of treatments is offering hope in slowing Alzheimer’s disease progression. These medications focus on reducing cognitive decline and preserving daily function in people living with the condition.

Among the most promising of these treatments is Donanemab (Kisunla™), a therapy that targets beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, delivered via an intravenous (IV) infusion every four weeks. Clinical trials have shown that Donanemab significantly slows cognitive and functional decline in individuals with early-stage Alzheimer’s, such as those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia.

Following Donanemab’s approval, another promising therapy, Lecanemab (Leqembi®), was also granted FDA approval. Delivered as an IV infusion every two weeks, Lecanemab has demonstrated similar success in reducing the decline of cognitive function in early-stage Alzheimer’s patients. Both Donanemab and Lecanemab focus on clearing harmful amyloid plaques from the brain, which has been linked to the progression of Alzheimer’s. However, like any medication, side effects such as headaches and amyloidrelated imaging abnormalities (ARIA) are reported, which require close monitoring by healthcare professionals.

The Importance of Early Diagnosis

An early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is crucial in maximizing treatment effectiveness. The earlier the diagnosis, the more treatment options become available, as many medications are most effective in the early stages of the disease. Alzheimer’s progresses in stages, ranging from asymptomatic and mild cognitive impairment to more severe stages where daily activities are significantly affected.

Guard Appreciation Month.”

The dedication of CPS Crossing Guards has garnered both local and national attention. 2024 Crossing Guard of the Year winner Tammy Anderson, known as the “Dancing Crossing Guard,” was spotlighted in Chicago news outlets for her quirky outfits. Anderson can be seen at her

assigned intersection in neon glasses and a flashy wardrobe across Chicago’s far south region. In December 2022, the Today Show featured Angela Thompson, a Crossing Guard at Fiske Elementary in Woodlawn for close to two decades, for the toy drive she has organized for nearly two decades.

Seeking a diagnosis early provides a greater chance to explore potential treatment plans and ensure that the right course of action is taken.

Financial considerations for multigenerational households

For many Black, Hispanic and Latino families, as well as other cultures, multigenerational living is a cherished aspect of home life. It can also be good for your family’s overall wellbeing.

Research indicates there can be financial benefits to multigenerational living, and when executed intentionally, having multiple family members under the same roof can potentially help improve health outcomes, reduce loneliness for older adults and bolster educational outcomes for children.

While multigenerational living has many positives, it also comes with a unique set of financial matters and planning needs. From saving and budgeting to dividing costs and estate planning, navigating the financial landscape of a multigenerational home calls for foresight and strategy.

Below are some financial considerations for people living in multigenerational households and those considering moving in with family members.

Helping to build family wealth

In a 2022 study, the Pew Research Center found people in multigenerational households were less likely to live in poverty, and some multigenerational households had more earners than the nonmultigenerational households, which can help provide a safety net in case someone loses a job. It can also encourage homeownership -- 14% percent of all home buyers in the study said their purchase was motivated by a desire to accommodate multiple generations in their family.

Having diverse financial needs

by dividing costs such as mortgage or rent, utilities, groceries and household expenses based on each member’s financial capacity and usage. A sense of transparency can be maintained among family members by openly discussing financial contributions and expenses.

Find balance between cultural values and financial health

Cultural traditions and familial structures can also play

over spending habits and adapting to changing income levels or unexpected expenses are necessary to maintain financial stability in multigenerational households.

Future planning is vital

Estate plans should be tailored to accommodate the financial needs and goals of each generation within the household and strategies should be developed for transferring ownership of businesses or properties to ensure continuity and preserve the family’s legacy. Make sure to compile essential legal documents -- including wills, trusts, powers of attorney and health care directives -- to outline the distribution of assets and clarify end-of-life wishes.

The bottom line

Multigenerational households can foster financial harmony and wellbeing by accounting for their individual financial goals and their shared responsibilities. Family members should be clear about plans, needs and expectations to promote financial stability and satisfaction for all. Communicating about these issues early can help avoid tension later on.

By addressing these considerations holistically and prioritizing open discussion and collaboration, multigenerational households can build a solid financial foundation, helping them achieve prosperity and security for their family members now and in the future.

Savings and budgeting plans can be more complicated because of the wide range of ages among family members. Seniors might require more for health care and retirement, for example, while children can bring daycare and tuition costs. Be flexible with your planning to accommodate different saving and budgeting needs and set short- and long-term goals for your savings with all generations in mind.

Expenses should be handled with fairness and equity

Multigenerational households have to ensure fairness

a significant role in money management, and it’s important to consider how multigenerational living can impact family wealth. Cultural heritage can shape financial attitudes and practices within multigenerational households, including saving habits, investment strategies and perceptions of wealth. Understanding how your cultural values connect to your beliefs and practices related to money can be essential for effective financial management within diverse family structures.

Communication is key to managing conflict and disagreement

The more people living in a home, the more likely they’ll face conflicting financial priorities. Navigating disagreements

In New Book, Novae CEO Shows How Fintech Can Change the Future for All

CONYERS, Ga., PRNewswire -- The latest book by Reco M. McCambry, founder of Inc 5000 company Novae, hits the market this weekend.

In “Fintech is the Future,” McCambry introduces readers to the worlds of financial technology and financial education—and how proper use of financial technology can make anyone wealthy.

In “Fintech is the Future: The Perfect Business,” McCambry introduces the reader to the business of financial technology, including the rationale he used when building his company to become one of America’s fastest-growing businesses. He explains how the marriage of financial technology and financial education with a direct sales business model helped his family become wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, and how similar fin -

tech products and business models can help anyone to do the same.

McCambry is a realist—instead of offering “secrets” or “weird tricks” to make the reader “effortlessly wealthy,” he lays down hard examples of the power of financial education, and in the vein of Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad, McCambry explains how the knowledge gap between the children of rich families and poor families perpetuates economic inequality. McCambry then lays out some prominent examples of how advances in financial technology can close these gaps—and how entrepreneurs can become wealthy by selling these products.

The book’s subtitle, “The Perfect Business to Build Wealth and Bless People at the Same Time,” refers to McCambry’s overall goal in building Novae. Research McCambry conducted during his MBA program, combined with his lived experience in

the direct sales industry, convinced him that the widespread dissemination of financial education and technological assistance could overcome many historical barriers to economic inequality.

And he has always recognized that this doesn’t just mean the Black community. Over the years, Novae has become distinguished by its willingness and ability to provide financial services anywhere that traditional banks have not adequately served. McCambry has hired corporate staff from various immigrant communities and covered the Biden-era expansion of Small Business Administration loans to underserved rural areas in his work as a Forbes Business Council member.

“Fintech is the Future” touches on all these points, sharing a taste of the power of financial education and the key points behind why the development of financial technology is so important to the way money moves. The book, which is written both for entrepreneurs looking to break into the fintech space and for consumers who may be struggling with debt or credit scores, is available through Amazon and other retailers.

MICHAEL B. JORDAN USHERS DAVID YURMAN’S CHEVRON COLLECTION INTO ITS NEXT CHAPTER

NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- David Yurman, America’s foremost luxury jewelry brand, is pleased to unveil its Spring 2025 Chevron campaign, starring acclaimed actor, director, producer, and global brand ambassador Michael B. Jordan.

David Yurman’s new men’s campaign tells the story of a modern man’s journey of self-expression and the pursuit of excellence. Against the backdrop of Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in New York City, renowned luxury fashion photographer Tyrone Lebon and film director Frank Lebon highlight the contrast of light and shadow across a series of film images and video that see Jordan walk with intention and determination—a symbolic nod to his illustrious film career and the Chevron collection itself.

“I am inspired by the way David Yurman stays true to itself while continuing to evolve,” said Jordan, who was styled by longtime stylist Jason Bolden for the campaign. “From David and Sybil’s artistic partnership with each other, to their ongoing collaboration with their son Evan, I look forward to continue working alongside a brand that values vision and innovation.”

Jordan’s next film Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) will premiere globally in theaters on April 18th. Following his successful directorial debut with Creed III, Jordan is set to expand his filmmaking career with his sophomore feature, The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios.

Originally launched in 2007, the Chevron Collection takes inspiration from ancient architecture and art and has been skillfully reinterpreted into the modern, sculptural design seen today. Viewed in relation to one another, each half of the Chevron motif is a mirror image of the signature Cable: a flattened reflection of the brand’s DNA and the pursuit of excellence within design and craftsmanship. Mirroring the campaign itself, the iconic Chevron pattern is a play on light and dark–with deeply carved valleys contrasting against highly polished flutes. Com-

prising of bracelets, rings and especially tags, the Chevron pattern has quickly become a staple design for the men’s collections, the fastest growing category of the business.

David Yurman’s partnership with Jordan began in Spring 2024 with the launch of the brand’s first-ever men’s high jewelry collection, The Vault. Building on the brand’s momentum and leadership in the men’s jewelry space, the new campaign underscores David Yurman’s ongoing connection to influential cultural figures who embody individuality and dedication to one’s craft–further solidifying the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and artistry. Like David Yurman himself, Jordan is in a constant state of evolution as he transitions from actor to producer to director.

“Michael’s unwavering confidence and authenticity, both in front of and behind the camera, reflect his strong work ethic and character. Through this new campaign, we hope to inspire our audiences to follow the same passion that Jordan does in shaping his destiny,” said President and Chief Creative Officer Evan Yurman.

The Spring 2025 Men’s Chevron campaign launched on David Yurman.com and across all global social channels: @davidyurman and @davidyurmanmen. For more information, visit davidyurman. com.

HEYDUDE Partners with Heisman Trophy Winner Travis Hunter

WESTWOOD, Mass., PRNewswire -- HEYDUDE, the popular casual footwear brand that is known for blending individual style and lightweight comfort into every pair of shoes, is launching a new global campaign, “Unlike Anything”. The campaign features rising football star and Heisman Trophy winner, Travis Hunter, who continues to redefine what it means to defy expectations and pave his own path on and off the football field.

The “Unlike Anything” campaign is an important milestone for the brand, aimed at embracing the very things that make our fans truly unlike anything. Celebrating those who are defiantly comfortable in their own shoes, creative, confident and uniquely themselves.

Hunter was one of the most dynamic players in college football history, as a unanimous All-American excelling at both cornerback and wide receiver. His historic senior season had him named AP College Football Player of the Year, Heisman Trophy winner, and Academic All-American. He is expected to be a top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“We’re excited to finally debut ‘Unlike Anything’ because it’s a true celebration of HEYDUDE and the community of Dudes around us,” said Paul Nugent, CMO, HEYDUDE. “That ethos is ingrained in our DNA and has been our north star from product drops, partnerships and everything in between. We knew Travis could really bring this mantra to life in a unique and dynamic way, so once we found out he was already a long-time brand fan, it felt like a no-brainer.”

Although Hunter’s versatility on the football field captured national attention, it is equally how he conducts himself off the field – his unique style, confidence and ability to challenge norms — that perfectly embodies the “Unlike Anything” positioning.

A genuine fan of the brand, Hunter will show-off his more casual side in this campaign, being captured off the field doing the things he loves - fishing, gaming and unwinding after practice. The campaign will feature him in various HEYDUDE Wally styles, including the Wally Stretch Sox and Wally Slipper, that provide lightweight comfort.

“For me, being great starts with how I spend my time off the field to recharge and focus,” said Travis Hunter. “Whether I am relaxing or on a boat fishing, my HEYDUDE Wally shoes bring a sense of comfort and confidence that allows me to really live in the moment and find that balance. That’s why I’m so excited to show off my HEYDUDE Wally shoes that have been a part of my life for a long time.”

The partnership with Hunter will be the first of many to come for the brand under the “Unlike Anything” platform, and will include new Wally product drops, coordinated social media efforts, and in-store and digital marketing. The campaign will pave new ways for HEYDUDE to continue highlighting key differentiators in fans and products through ongoing product innovations, collaborators and partnerships.

“We’re thrilled to bring this campaign and new platform to our fans,” said Nugent. “Our community of Dudes are unlike anything and we plan to continue innovating through this lens in 2025 and beyond.”

Grammy Winner Ann Nesby Executive Produces & Narrates Civil Rights Documentary

on Hidden Figure Cirilo McSween

ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- Grammy-winning artist and Metro Atlanta resident Ann Nesby (Queen Sugar, The Fighting Temptations), former lead singer of Sounds of Blackness, brings her storytelling prowess as executive producer and narrator of CIRILO, A Legacy Untold. The film spotlights civil rights leader Cirilo McSween.

Nesby, known for her powerhouse vocals, continues her musical momentum with her latest single, “My Man,” co-written with R.L. of platinum-selling R&B group NEXT. The song is in rotation on XM Radio’s Heart & Soul and iHeartRadio, with national expansion underway.

A Civil Rights Hidden Figure

Directed and produced by Justin O. Cooper, CIRILO, A Legacy Untold uncovers the story of Cirilo McSween, a Panamanian immigrant and key figure in civil rights and economic empowerment. As Chief Economic Advisor for Operation Breadbasket, McSween worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, and Andrew Young—three civil rights icons with deep Atlanta ties—to advance civil rights

through economic initiatives.

McSween also helped secure the 1977 Torrijos-Carter Treaties, returning control of the Panama Canal to Panama—one of President Jimmy Carter’s landmark achievements. “This film shines a light on an overlooked leader who financed the civil rights movement and shaped economic policy and diplomacy,” said Cooper.

Get Your House In Order

Now is The Time

What should you do to prepare for retirement if your employer has no plan? A person without a formal retirement plan can still take key steps to protect their financial future. Here are some things that you can do:

-Delay Social Security (if possible) to increase monthly payouts.

-Check eligibility for Supplemental Security (SSI). Medicaid, and other government assistance programs.

-Explore tax emptions and senior discounts of all sorts,

-Downsize and move to a less expensive area.

-Decrease subscriptions to movie channels, music channels, phone services

-Concentrate on paying off your high interest debt first, make a strict budget and stick to it.

-Consider working part-time in your field or becoming a consultant.

-Downsize or move in with someone to share expenses

-If you own a home consider a reverse mortgage. You have heard the expression, “It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.” If you are still working and have a few years to go before retirement, start your own retirement plan by purchasing an Indexed Universal Life insurance policy. This type of policy provides you with growth of your money, the possibility of borrowing against the death benefit, and tax benefits.

If you have not given any thought to how you will sustain yourself after retirement, now is the time.

Bye for now,

Bren.

BronzeLens Launches 2025 Season

ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- BronzeLens Film Festival producers proudly announce that Valerie Pettiford, Egypt Sherrod, and Myeshia Mizuno will receive its prestigious Legendary, Vanguard, and Behind the Lens BronzeLens Women SuperStars Awards, respectively. The BronzeLens Women SuperStars Honors awards celebrate women who have broken barriers, excelled in their fields, and paved the way for future generations of women of color to become industry leaders. These exceptional women will accept their awards during the BronzeLens Women SuperStars Honors event on March 1 at Atlanta’s historic Rialto Center for the Arts.

“We are thrilled to honor these remarkable women who have demonstrated extraordinary strength, determination, and brilliance,” said Kathleen Bertrand, BronzeLens founder and Executive Producer. “Their contributions are a testament to the power of women of color in leadership, and they are role models for innovators and changemakers of the future.”

The 2025 BronzeLens Legendary Women SuperStar is Valarie Pettiford. With an acclaimed career spanning nearly five decades, Pettiford is what show-biz folks call a ‘triple threat’ - a dancer, actor, and singer whose work has earned her multiple NAACP Image Awards and Tony and Grammy Award nominations. Pettiford currently plays Chippy Duncan for five -- soon to be six -- seasons of BET’s hit series The Family Business and recently joined The Young and The Restless as Amy Lewis.

Egypt Sherrod is the Vanguard Women SuperStar. Sherrod is a true powerhouse

whose multifaceted career spans real estate, design, entrepreneurship, and media. She is best known as the host and executive producer of HGTV’s top-rated show Married to Real Estate, which drew over 19 million viewers in its debut season. Now in its fourth season, the show ranks among HGTV’s top five programs and is set to broadcast in more than 82 countries.

Myeshia Mizuno Mizuno is an EMMY-winning powerhouse producer, executive, and visionary. She is the showrunner and executive producer of the legendary syndicated Family Feud and the first black female showrunner of a primetime network gameshow, ABC’s megahit Celebrity Family Feud. Mizuno is also the creative force behind ABC’s Judge Steve Harvey.

An ‘In Conversation’ with all the 2025 honorees will be a special highlight during the awards program. Animator, Director, Writer, Producer, and 2018 BronzeLens Women SuperStar Aoyoka Chenzira will moderate. Portia Bruner of the nationally distributed lifestyle show Portia will be the event host and violinist Carey Durham will perform.

The BronzeLens Women SuperStars Honors event is the primary fundraising component for the BronzeLens Creators Scholarship. This year, two scholarships worth $10,000 each will be awarded to students selected from participating HBCUs. The 2025 Scholarship recipients will be announced in late May.

“LUNCH WITH A LAWYER”

TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The Ted and Kelli London Charitable Foundation, in partnership with the Ted London and Associates, is sponsoring “Lunch with a Lawyer” to commemorate Black History Month and encourage students of color to consider a career in the legal profession. Seventh and eighth-grade students of Amelia Earhart School, located at 1710 East 93rd Street, Chicago, IL 60617, attended “Lunch with a Lawyer” on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, and Thursday, February 20, 2025 at Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab located at 60 East Grand Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611.

Students departed Amelia Earhart School and travel via charter bus to Joe’s. There, they will dine with Attorney Theodore “Ted” London and the Honorable John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr. and experience a business lunch. Students will select from a custom menu curated by the chefs at Joe’s for a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The Ted and Kelli London Charitable Foundation is dedicated to bridging the gap between the classroom and the courtroom, based on a belief that a diverse legal community is essential for a just and equitable legal system. Through grant programs, mentorship, and educational resources, we are committed to increasing minority lawyer representation and ensuring that all voices are heard in the courts. The Foundation is grateful to the owners, management, and staff of Joe’s for hosting this event, which has not been held at the restaurant previously. The students of Amelia Earhart School will be the first to dine at this establishment.

Attorney Theodore “Ted” London remarked , “When I was in 6th grade, we had a field trip to a fine-dining restaurant, which had a profound effect on me and my understanding that there are broader culinary experiences available. I want to be able to provide a similar experience to these students, as it remains impactful to me to this day.”

EDUCATION

Don't Forget These 6 Things on the Day of Your College Entrance Exams

(StatePoint) While every institution weighs college entrance exam scores a little bit differently, one thing is certain: doing well can only boost your application to the school of your choice. That’s why you don’t want to leave anything to chance on the day of your test. Pack these items the night before so you can grab extra sleep in the morning:

1. An extra layer: There is nothing more distracting than being hot or cold. Remember, you’ll be sitting still in the test site for a long time, so you want to make sure you’re prepared. Dress in layers so you can stay comfortable, no matter what temperature the room is.

2. A snack and water bottle: Bring a snack and a water bottle so you can stay focused on the test questions, not a growling stomach. The college entrance exam is a marathon, not a sprint, so opt for brain-healthy snacks that will keep you fueled to think straight for hours, such as nuts, dark chocolate or berries, and avoid options that will make you sluggish or cause your blood sugar to spike and crash.

3. A calculator: Ace the math portion of the exam with a calculator you can count on. The fx-9750GIII graphing calculator from Casio, for example, is

approved for the SAT, PSAT, ACT and AP tests, and features an intuitive icon menu, making it incredibly easy to use, even when your work is being timed. With hundreds of hours of battery life, it’s a reliable choice for a long day of testing.

4. Writing utensils: While some college entrance exams are now being administered digitally, you’ll still want to make sure you’re equipped with several pens or freshly-sharpened pencils for scratch work. And if you are taking the test on paper, be sure to bring No. 2 pencils with erasers.

5. A testing device: If you’ll be taking the test digitally, bring a fully-charged, approved testing device and charger. The device should also have any needed testing software already installed.

6. Your identification and test ticket: Most exams require you to bring an admissions ticket and photo identification. For a smooth test day, don’t leave these items at home.

Tests like the ACT and SAT are important pieces of the college admissions puzzle. Being prepared for test day with all the items you need can help you stay focused, and perform your best.
